Michael
Schumacher leads Ferrari sweep |
|
Michael Schumacher won a dramatic Malaysian Grand Prix after Ferrari's clever
tire strategy while the safety car was out stood him in good stead. A sudden downpour soon after the start saw the cars dive into the pits for wet
tires and the two Ferraris queued, one behind the other, for over a minute.
Both emerged on intermediate, rather than wet tires, and as the track dried stormed through the field to take a strong lead. The end of the race saw only 14 cars left on track with a top six of M Schumacher, Barrichello, Coulthard, Frentzen, R Schumacher, Hakkinen.

In the end, life goes on. I feel terrible for this man's family, but I won't be so naive to suggest this man "died doing what he loved". I plan on going to this year's Grand Prix in Indianapolis. If I get killed at the race, you can bet I didn't die a happy man. How can anybody say that? I'm just dead. Not happy, not sad, just dead. Could it be prevented? Sure, anything can be prevented with hindsight. That's what is happening now. Story

Speed
in F1, Don't muck with our sport
by
Glenn Anderson |
|
Folks, it's called racing. And it's dangerous. And no matter what series you follow, you know that there is always the possibility that someone could die. It's tragic when it happens, but it's part of the deal - and no amount of tinkering and mucking about with rules & regulations is ever going to take that away from the sport. If you can't deal with it, find another sport to follow. And please, Max, don't muck with my sport. Story

Marbles
- The Tony George Syndrome
by
Glenn Anderson |
|
In this article, Glenn Anderson takes us back to
the split between CART and the IRL, examines why it happened, and where we
are now. He then draws some parallels between what happened in the
Indy Car world and how, in many ways, it mimics what happened if F1 years
ago, and what may be about to happen in F1 again with the manufacturers
buying into the series. Story

Schumacher
wins Australian GP
by
Mark Cipolloni |
Defending
World Driving Champion, Michael Schumacher, has won the F1
season opener comfortably, leading all laps except when he
pitted. McLaren’s David Coulthard was second and Schumacher’s Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello third. BAR’s Olivier Panis, Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld and Jordan’s Heinz-Harald Frentzen rounded out the points-paying positions.
There were several accidents during the race, the most
frightening between Villeneuve and Ralf Schumacher. No drivers were injured
but a track marshal was struck by debris and died as a result of his injuries.

Schumacher takes pole in Australia |
|
Ferrari teammates Michael
Schumacher and Reuben's Barrichello will start 1-2 in
Australia ahead of Hakkinen, Frentzen and Ralf
Schumacher. Schumacher lapped the 3.295mi Albert Park circuit at 1:26.892/136.519mph, some 3.66sec faster
(the result of a ludicrous tire war) than last year’s pole time (1:30.556, Mika
Hakkinen) and 2.47sec faster than the previous all-time qualifying lap at Melbourne.
His Ferrari teammate, Rubens Barrichello, was second-fastest, .371 sec in arrears, with Hakkinen another .2sec slower.
Heinz-Harald Frentzen was fourth in the best-of-the-rest Jordan/Honda, ahead of Williams’ Ralf Schumacher. Hakkinen’s teammate David Coulthard, Frentzen’s teammate Jarno Trulli, BAR teammates Jacques Villeneuve and Olivier Panis and Sauber’s Nick Heidfeld completed the top 10.

tops in Australia, Schumacher crashes hard |
|
Ferrari Rubens Barrichello led both hour-long
Friday practice sessions in Melbourne, ending the day with a 1:28.965/133.339mph lap that smashed not only last year’s pole-position lap (1:30.556, Mika
Hakkinen) but the all-time fastest qualifying lap at Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit (1:29.369, Jacques Villeneuve,
1997). No doubt the tire war is responsible for this alarming
increase in speed already. The day ended with three-time and reigning World Champion Michael Schumacher
completely missing a corner and rolling his Ferrari twice in a horrific-looking accident.
He emerged unscathed. Practice

I'm totally getting away from myself, here, but what the
heck, the Formula One season hasn't started yet. I'm free to choose how and when I cook my meals. As of this current moment, my dish is the US Grand Prix. It's been awhile since I've taken out my pots and pans, so I must start slow. Indianapolis is the main course I have in mind. So allow me to stretch out and warm-up.

Senna
and Earnhardt - Rest in Peace
by
Steve Dean |

Everyone always says the good times go by in a flash. By the time we realize the fun we've had, it's over. It's one of life's cruel ironies. Perhaps it is a natural check and balance of life. Too much of a good thing throws everyday life into chaos. Maybe that is the logic--maybe, but to me, it seems rather cold.

A look back - 1977 Gran Premio d'Italia
at Monza
by David
Cipolloni
|
|
It was a typical hot and dusty Sunday in Monza, Italy for the start of the 48th Italian Grand Prix. Crowds of overzealous Italians, waving
"Forza Ferrari" flags, were lining the track and arguing with the gate workers to gain access to the paddock. The workers and their K-9's were able to keep the spirited fans in check. The race in Monza typically starts late in the day, a little after three o'clock. Although a late day qualifying charge by James Hunt on Saturday meant a McLaren was starting on the pole instead of a Ferrari, but Carlos Reutemann driving a Ferrari managed to nail down the number two spot, meaning the Italian fans were smelling blood. This is a big issue for CART. NASCAR has its issues too. Story
