Latest Champ Car News and Commentary

So you wanna be a stock car driver?
 by Tim Wohlford

At the Michigan IRL race, each driver who was asked indicated that they were in contact with NASCAR Cup teams. Unfortunately, recent history shows that a move from pointy-nosed cars into NASCAR isn't a wise career choice. In fact, it might be a career-ending decision.  Juan Pablo Montoya stands a significant chance of being another pointy-nose driver who fails at NASCAR. Team Ganassi has only five wins to its credit and poor recent performance means Juan won't have a top ride by any means. More...

Tung aims to be Champ Car's first Chinese driver
 by Mark Cipolloni

Champ Car is going to race in China in 2007, but Champ Car is an unknown quantity in China so the race promoter doesn't have a lot to sell.  However, that could soon change if German F3 points leader Ho-Pin Tung is successful in getting Champ Car to give him a test drive.  Tung lives in Holland so he carries a Dutch citizenship, but he's also Chinese, which could make him a perfect fit for Champ Car's new races in Holland and China.   More....

Bourdais beats Tracy in Montreal shootout

Archrivals Sebastien Bourdais and Paul Tracy were 1-2 on the final green-white-checker restart of the rain delayed Montreal Grand Prix Champ Car race Monday, setting up what many were anticipating could be more possible wheel banging.  But Sebastien Bourdais prevailed to beat Tracy by 1.4-sec.  More....

Stephen King explains Wilson's novel Investors Club
 by Mark Cipolloni

Champ Car driver Justin Wilson got his real big break in racing when he was offered to drive in Formula One.  However, he was expected to bring money but he didn't have enough so he sold shares in himself to raise the funds in a novel concept.  I caught up with the head of Wilson's Investors Club, Stephen King in Montreal this past weekend to learn more about the club.  More....

Massa, Schumacher 1-2 in Turkey

A driving error surely cost Michael Schumacher pole position for Sunday's grand prix in Istanbul, but Ferrari teammate Felipe Massa picked up the pieces to score his first career pole.  Renault's Fernando Alonso qualified third.  More....

Champ Car President Steve Johnson announced today in Montreal that this will be the last year for the Champ Car World Series to race on the Gilles Villeneuve circuit in Montreal.  He also spoke about the status of some other  rumored happenings in the series. More....

Bourdais makes it look easy in qualifying

Series point leader Sebastien Bourdais survived a spin and contact with the Turn 4 wall to win the provisional pole position for Sunday's Montréal Grand Prix Champ Car race.  Bourdais was a comfortable 1/2 second up on defending race champion Oriol Servia and 9/10ths up on third place Bruno Junqueira.  More....

Looking ahead to Montreal
 by Rick Benjamin

Denver’s in the rear view mirror and Montreal awaits the Champ Car family this weekend….with all of us wondering how the series’ major rivalries will play out this time around. It seems to me after ten races in 2006 a new level of intensity is brewing in Champ Car. A couple of significant rivalries are blossoming, fueled by genuine dislike as well as tight competition. Friday in Denver, Colorado I caught up with American Champ Car driver AJ Allmendinger with the Forsythe Championship Racing team.  As the only American and the hottest driver in Champ Car right now, Allmendinger has seen his career make a 180-degree turn when he switched from RuSPORT to Forsythe six races ago.  Since then he has won four of six races and moved to 2nd in the point standings.  More...

Looking ahead to Denver
 by Rick Benjamin

Looking ahead to a visit to the Rockies, and another joust in the streets for the Champ Car World Series in Denver. The tenth event of 2006 will be Champ Car’s first since the violent wreck in Road America testing that has taken Cristiano da Matta out of the seat, perhaps permanently.  It’ll be a somber gathering of the Champ Car family this weekend, I’d guess, since Shorty is one of the series’ most popular drivers, and one of three past champions currently active. More.....

Tracy nips Bourdais in provisional qualifying

Forsythe Championship Racing Driver Paul Tracy waited until his final lap in qualifying to beat Newman/Haas driver Sebastien Bourdais by the slimmest of margins (0.004 sec) to win the provisional pole for the San Jose Grand Prix.  American AJ Allmendinger would have won the provisional pole but lost his fast lap by causing a red flag and ended up third.  Dan Clarke and Nelson Philippe rounded out the top-5. Observations from Champ Car's mid-summer grind
 by Rick Benjamin

Enjoying an evening in the air conditioned comfort of a Boeing 737, homeward-bound for a brief visit between Champ Car’s stops at the series’ two newest venues, Edmonton’s City Centre Airport and San Jose’s downtown street circuit. Air conditioning was much in demand over the weekend in Edmonton with ambient temperatures in the mid-90’s and track temps of more than 115. More.....

Looking ahead to Edmonton - Many storylines
 by Rick Benjamin
Midsummer in motorsports often means a calendar that’s overcrowded, airport lines that are overfull, and sleep patterns that are overstressed. But it’s also the time when championships are decided and driver and team futures are solidified. That’s the situation I find myself contemplating as we head to Edmonton for the second running of the West Edmonton Mall Champ Car Grand Prix this weekend. More

Champ Car Preview: Edmonton

When Forsythe Championship Racing’s A.J. Allmendinger appeared in Victory Lane in Portland, it was looked at as the feel-good story of the year. Less than a week after getting broomed out of his RuSPORT ride, Allmendinger hopped into a new car and rode it to the top of the podium. And while everyone discussed what a great story it was, nobody figured the 24-year-old was just getting started. More

On Saturday morning in Toronto, Canada I caught up with RuSPORT Champ Car driver Justin Wilson to get to know this tall British ex-F1 driver.  I was most curious to learn how he came to race in North America and whether he was happy with his decision to move his career over to this side of the Atlantic.
