Jeremy Mayfield claimed his first ever Bud Pole at Dover Downs International Speedway with a qualifying speed of 159.872 mph. Just missing the track record of 159.964 mph, set last year by Rusty Wallace, Mayfield will start his Pegasus from the point in the MBNA.com 400 scheduled for Sunday afternoon. It is Mayfield's third Bud Pole of the season and the fifth Winston Cup pole of his career. Mayfield has started in the top 10 for the last four races at Dover, but a bit of advice from teammate Rusty Wallace may have been the bit of magic Mayfield needed to claim the top spot. "He was the one that told us he got loose in qualifying and that a lot of other guys did," Mayfield said. "If he hadn't told us that, we probably wouldn't have made a last-minute air pressure adjustment. That certainly helped us." It has been a feast or famine year for Mayfield. He led the June race at Dover for 49 laps before engine problems ended the day early, relinquishing him to a 37th place finish. "It's the story of the year. It's been an up and down year for us. We just keep fighting back every time we get down to come back to the top. We were good in practice," reflected Mayfield. "So we loosened our car up with air pressure. Any time you get a Winston Cup pole, your car has to be perfect and that's what we were today."
