This weekend the NASCAR Winston Cup tour parades through the "Valley of the Sun" for the Checker Auto Parts / Dura Lube 500 from Phoenix International Raceway. The 1-mile oval, also known as a flat track with its 9 to 11 degree banking, offers some of the most competitive racing on the Winston Cup circuit.

Hosting Winston Cup races since 1985, only the late Davey Allison has been to victory lane more than once at this dessert oasis, winning back to back in 1991 and 1992. Other anomalies, besides the unusual shape of the track, are that the race has never been won from the pole, or even from the front row. But the winner has come from the third starting position twice, and winners have even started as far back as the 29th starting position, as Ricky Rudd did in 1995.

With Halloween just passing, expect the unexpected this weekend. Besides the nine drivers who have won at PIR previously, only Bill Elliott, Bobby Hamilton and Rusty Wallace have also sat on the pole for this event, possibly giving them an edge this weekend. Also look for Mark Martin to try to find his way to victory lane this weekend. Martin has finished in second place five times and is surely thinking that perhaps this is his year to visit the checkers.

Last year's winner Tony Stewart, looking to return to victory lane, finds PIR a one of a kind facility.

"Everybody calls it a flat track", Stewart said, "but to me one end is flat and one end has banking to it. It's a unique place because the radius of the corners are different on each end, the banking of the corners are different on each end, and then you have that neat dogleg on the backstretch which adds a lot of character to Phoenix."

John Andretti won the pole at Phoenix last year and currently holds the qualifying record of 132.714 mph with the effort. After an up and down season this year, Andretti is looking to break into the top 20 in points and was hopeful for another good run this weekend.

"This team proved some things at Rockingham", Andretti commented, "and now it's off to Phoenix - a track where we can run good. I won the pole last year and had a good run in the race. At the end things didn't turn out the way we wanted them to, but we will try to turn that around this weekend. We are focused on going forward and getting this Cheerios/STP Pontiac to the front of the pack. Breaking that track record wouldn't be bad either".

Bobby Labonte currently holds a commanding 201 point lead over Dale Earnhardt. With only three races remaining, a good finish this weekend by Labonte or a poor finish by Earnhardt would all but etch the trophy for Labonte in his hunt for his first Winston Cup championship. But if Labonte has bad luck, then everybody should buckle up for the southern swing through Homestead and Atlanta, because there might still be a challenge for the championship.
