Richard Childress Racing driver Clint Bowyer turned a lap of 130.412 mph in his Jack Daniel's Chevrolet to earn the sophomore's second career Bud Pole for the Sylvania 300 at New Hampshire International Speedway.
"It was a good lap," Bowyer said. "We were fast all day, and I'm really excited about our car."
Martin Truex, Jr., Kurt Busch, Jimmie Johnson and Ryan
Newman rounded out the top five.
“Damn that Bowyer, I am going to tackle him when he comes in here,” Truex
said after missing the top spot with a 130.255 mph run.
Elliott Sadler, Tony Stewart, defending Sylvania 300 winner Kevin Harvick,
Greg Biffle and Dave Blaney, who was the fastest among the drivers required
to qualify on time, completed the top ten qualifiers.
Sam Hornish Jr., who we don't rate because all his IRL wins came in 100% throttle
racing, failed to qualify for his first NEXTEL Cup race after posting the
45th fastest lap at 126.631 mph. Hornish joined Dale Jarrett, Jeremy
Mayfield, Michael Waltrip, Kevin Lepage and John Andretti that failed to
qualify.
Andretti had turned the 26th fastest time in the session, but was
disqualified when his car failed post-qualifying inspection.
