Jimmie Johnson topped Friday's NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series Bud Pole qualifying session with a lap of 154.765 mph in the Lowe's Chevrolet to take pole position for Sunday's Dodge Dealers 400 at Dover International Speedway.
It was the defending NEXTEL Cup champ's second pole of the 2007 season and eleventh of his Cup career.
Rookie Juan Pablo Montoya will start outside the front row after turning a lap of 153.833 mph in the Texaco Havoline Dodge.
Denny Hamlin, Kurt Busch and June Dover race winner Martin Truex, Jr.
rounded out the top five.
Scott Riggs, Kevin Harvick, Bobby Labonte, Greg Biffle and Matt Kenseth
completed the first ten qualifiers.
"It's tough to say how important track position is going to
be," Johnson said. "The thing I'm most excited about is having the first pit
stall."
Johnson and Jeff Gordon both have 5,210 points, but Johnson's series-high
six victories give him the edge. Gordon has four.
Six of the Chase drivers will start in the top 10 of Sunday's race. Denny
Hamlin was third, Kurt Busch fourth, Martin Truex Jr. fifth, Kevin Harvick
was seventh and Matt Kenseth was 10th.
"We've got the 12 best guys in this sport, and there's six or seven right
now that all have momentum," Johnson said. "It's going to be a great battle
all the way to the end."
Sunday's Dodge Dealers 400 will take the green flag at 1:30 p.m. ET.
