Jimmie Johnson turned a lap of 175.063 mph in his Lowe's Chevrolet to earn the top spot for Sunday's third race in the Chase for the NEXTEL Cup at Kansas Motor Speedway. It was Johnson's third Bud Pole of the season and second straight after earning the top spot last week in Dover.
"I was really unhappy with my lap," Johnson said. "I thought we were in big trouble. One, I didn't think we had run that fast, then when I heard the time I didn't think we'd stay there."
"Maybe I am glad that it didn't drive well. I would have been 30th or something like that."
Ryan Newman had qualified outside the front row in the
ALLTEL Dodge, but the car was found to be too low in post-qualifying
inspection. Newman will start 43rd in Sunday's race.
The top five was rounded out by Matt Kenseth, Scott Riggs, Jeff Gordon and
Denny Hamlin.
“It was a good lap. Robbie [Reiser, crew chief] and Chip [Bolin, engineer]
and all these guys on the DeWalt team have been doing a great job, and made
some good adjustments for qualifying. We were just a little bit tight, but
that was a really good lap for us. We got a good draw, too, but that’ll be a
good spot to start for Sunday.”
Dale Earnhardt, Jr., Greg Biffle, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex, Jr. and Clint
Bowyer completed the first ten qualifiers.
Four drivers failed to qualify for Sunday's race: A.J. Allmendinger, Ward
Burton, Brian Vickers and Jon Wood.
Sunday's LifeLock 400 will take the green flag at 2 p.m. ET.
