2018 F1 season finale The Yas Marina Circuit is a showplace, and it should be considering it is widely believed to be the most expensive Formula One track ever built, with some estimates topping $1 billion. It was a huge disappointment for Verstappen who was fastest in all three practice sessions. Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Raikkonen will start on row 3.

The 4.304-kilometer (2.674-mile), 17-turn circuit has hosted Formula One since 1963, but in preparation for Formula One’s return in 2015 after a 22-year hiatus, it was completely revamped. Barely nips Vettel and Raikkonen On his very last lap, Mercedes ace Lewis Hamilton turned a lap of 1m32.237s to beat his championship rival Sebastian Vettel by just 0.061s and the 2nd Ferrari of Kimi Raikkonen by just 0.070s. But Vettel gets a 3-place grid penalty for ignoring a red flag in Friday practice and will start 5th. Valtteri Bottas was 4th but will move up to 3rd on the grid ahead of the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo and the Force India of Esteban Ocon.

Featured this week: Supporting the Race from Afar The Japanese Grand Prix marks the fifth to last event in the 2018 FIA Formula One World Championship, and fifth-place Haas F1 Team is eyeing Sunday’s race at the 5.807-kilometer (3.608-mile), 18-turn Suzuka Circuit as a strong opportunity to take fourth place in the constructors’ standings before heading home for the United States Grand Prix at Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The layout of Suzuka is a figure-eight, and it is the only track in Formula One with such a configuration.

Bottas beats Hamilton with Vettel third Defending Russian GP winner Valtteri Bottas turned a new track record to win pole for the first time in 2018. Bottas' lap of 1m31.387s was too much for teammate Lewis Hamilton who made a mistake in turn 7 on his final lap and came up 0.145s short, but still it was an easy all-Mercedes front row. The Ferrari row was led by Sebastien Vettel 0.556s behind while him teammate Kimi Raikkonen was 0.850s back.

How Mercedes keeps team members fit With 21 races, the 2018 season is one of the longest Formula One seasons ever. This year's calendar has also featured the first ever triple-header in F1 history. Such a long season can make it quite challenging for teams to keep energy levels up and fight fatigue. Therefore, teams do a lot to keep their members fit and healthy. Energy levels depend on a number of different factors and the importance of those factors varies from person to person.

The fact that the Halo unbolts from the car, so it can be replaced if damaged, means that except for Texas, Iowa, Gateway and Pocono, which have fairly high banking, the Halo can be used by IndyCar at 75% of its venues, and the windscreen at the 4 remaining venues.

Why braking is so important for the Italian GP Monza is famous for its high-speed nature, with its long straights and only a limited number of corners. This makes every turn – and every time the drivers hit the brakes – even more important. Monza is a relatively fast track, so the drivers have to slow down their cars from very high speeds. Additionally, they will be running the lowest downforce configuration of the year, which makes braking at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza even more tricky.

Max Verstappen and Kevin Magnussen rounded out the top-5 while Lewis Hamilton's car broke in Q1 and will start 14th.
Breaks Hamilton's dominance at Silverstone The best race of the year so far, ended with a win for Scuderia Ferrari, which sees Sebastian Vettel increase his lead by 7 points to 8 in the Drivers’ championship and the Ferrari team extend its advantage by 10 points to 20 in the Constructors’. While Vettel grabbed the lead at the start from polesitter Lewis Hamilton, the race was far from over and it came down to a battle royale over the last 7 laps with Vettel passing Valtteri Bottas for the lead and then holding off Lewis Hamilton and Kimi Raikkonen for the win.
0.098s separates top-3 Lewis Hamilton won his 4th consecutive British GP pole by beating Sebastian Vettel's Ferrari by just 0.044s setting up an all front row for the two titans of F1 on Sunday. Vettel set a new lap record and then Hamilton beat him with a time of 1m25.892s while Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen also came close to take third just 0.098s behind the Mercedes. Valtteri Bottas will start 4th in the 2nd Mercedes while Max Verstappen rounded out the top-5 for Red Bull.

The 5.891-kilometer (3.660-mile), 18-turn track that is roughly a two- hour drive from London is one of the series’ fastest venues, with an average speed of around 230 kph (143 mph). It is the third longest track on the Formula One schedule, and the majority of its layout is comprised of medium- and high-speed corners, allowing drivers to run at full-throttle for 70 percent of their lap.

Holds off Ferraris to win Austrian GP Max Verstappen nursed blistering tires all the way to the finish in his Red Bull to win the Austrian GP ahead of the closing Ferraris of Kimi Raikkonen and Sebastian Vettel. The two Mercedes are usually very reliable but after running 1-2 at the start both the cars of Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton fell out with mechanical issues giving Vettel a 1-point lead in the points over Hamilton. Mercedes lock out front row for Austrian GP The car is 99% in F1 and the driver 1% and that was no more evident in qualifying for the Austrian GP Saturday as the two Aldo Costa Mercedes qualified with near identical times. Valtteri Bottas put up a track record time of 1m03.130s to nip his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton by just 0.019s for an all Mercedes front row. The 2nd row is the Ferrari row but they are far behind - Sebastian Vettel third (0.334s back) and Kimi Raikkonen fourth (0.530s back) - a big gap on such a short lap time track.

Easily holds off Max Verstappen after Vettel blows it Lewis Hamilton drove his Mercedes to an easy 7-second win over Red Bull's Max Verstappen to win the French GP after Sebastian Vettel tangled with the 2nd Mercedes of Valtteri Bottas in Turn 1 at the start damaging his front win and giving Bottas a flat left rear. Kimi Raikkonen finished third while Daniel Ricciardo and Vettel's Ferrari rounded out the top-5.
Hamilton over Bottas in French GP qualifying As predicted, the new Mercedes engine had too much power for Ferrari to overcome and Lewis Hamilton has won the pole for the French GP at Paul Ricard with a time of 1m30.029s to beat his teammate Valtteri Bottas by 0.118s. Sebastian Vettel was almost 4/10ths back for Ferrari in third while the Red Bulls of Max Verstappen and Daniel Ricciardo rounded out the top-5. The biggest surprise was Charles Leclerc grabbing 8th for Sauber Ferrari/Alfa Romeo.
Mercedes and Force India This weekend marks the return of the French Grand Prix at Paul Ricard, a circuit that has changed considerably since Formula One last raced there in 1990. F1 teams don't find themselves heading to all-new venues very often. Esteban Ocon: "It's been my dream for years to be racing in front of my home crowd and now I will finally experience the fantastic feeling of a home Grand Prix. When the race was announced, it was the best news from the whole of last year and I’m really looking forward to it."
Leaves Renault with crumbs Aston Martin Red Bull Racing is proud to announce that it has reached an agreement with Honda Motor Co Ltd to race with the Japanese manufacturer’s power units for the 2019 and 2020 Formula 1 seasons. Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner said: “This multi-year agreement with Honda signals the start of an exciting new phase in Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s efforts to compete not just for grand prix wins but for what is always our goal – championship titles."

Hamilton wins easily over Bottas Ferrari had an advantage the first few races, but then Aldo Costa made improvements to the Mercedes and in the Spanish GP Sunday the Mercedes duo buried the Ferraris. Lewis Hamilton led all the way from pole (except for pitstops) to win for the 2nd race in a row and extend his point lead to 17 over Sebastian Vettel. Valtteri Bottas brought the 2nd Mercedes home 2nd and Max Verstappen was third ahead of Vettel after Ferrari blew another strategic pitstop call.

Sometimes it’s better to be lucky than good and that was the case for Lewis Hamilton who won the exciting Azerbaijan GP after his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas blew a tire with two laps to go and Sebastian Vettel blew it by locking up going for the lead after the final restart. Kimi Raikkonen came home 2nd behind Hamilton as he had nothing for the Mercedes driver at the end.
Sebastian Vettel put his Ferrari on pole for the third straight F1 race in a row Saturday afternoon in qualifying for the Azerbaijan GP. The Mercedes of Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas will start 2nd and 3rd after Kimi Raikkonen, who was on a front row lap, did a tank-slapper exiting the final turn coming onto the crucial long front straight, and ended up sixth.

Red Bull gamble allows Ricciardo to win Chinese GP

A Red Bull strategy gamble worked to perfection for Daniel Ricciardo and propelled him to victory in Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix as the Australian Formula 1 driver charged from sixth place with 20 laps to go to grab the race win. Red Bull rolled the dice on a mid-race Safety Car and pitting both drivers for a second time to give them fresher tires than the rival Mercedes and Ferrari drivers.
Just one week after the Bahrain lock-out, Scuderia Ferrari once again qualified both cars on the front row as Sebastian Vettel beat Kimi Raikkonen by a mere 0.087 seconds in the qualifying session for the 2018 Chinese Grand Prix. Vettel’s pole was his 52nd in F1, his fourth in China, and Ferrari’s first in Shanghai since 2004 – the inaugural event. Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton were off the pace in third and fourth.
Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel had to use all his skill to nurse his soft tires from lap 18 to lap 57 and hold off a charging Valtteri Bottas on better tires to win the Bahrain GP for the 2nd year in a row. It was Vettel's 49th F1 win in his 200th start and has now won the first two F1 races of the year. Lewis Hamilton came home third after starting 9th and Pierre Gasly was 4th in the Toro Rosso Honda, a fantastic result.
Sebastian Vettel dug deep on his final run to nip his Ferrari teammate Kimi Raikkonen by 0.143s to win pole for the Bahrain GP, a race he has won the last two years. Vettel was the only driver to lap in the 1m27s bracket. Valtteri Bottas will start third for Mercedes and although his teammate Lewis Hamilton was 4th quick, he will start 9th with his 5 grid penalty. Starting 4th will be Daniel Ricciardo's Red Bull while Pierre Gasly will start 5th in the minnow team Toro Rosso Honda.
Bahrain will be another challenging weekend, although the challenges will be of a completely different nature. The race in the desert is tricky because the conditions change drastically between sessions. FP1 and FP3 take place in the heat of the day whereas Qualifying and the race itself take place after sunset so it's much cooler. That makes it extremely difficult to find the right set-up with the car. Bahrain is also a power-sensitive race with the long straights. We saw in Melbourne that the Ferraris in particular were very quick, so it is expected it to be a close battle.

There was no way Ferrari was going to defeat the Aldo Costa designed Mercedes without a little luck. That luck came by way of a virtual safety car that allowed Sebastian Vettel to steal a victory from Lewis Hamilton in the 2018 Formula 1 season-opening Australian Grand Prix. We told you there was no way anyone will beat an Aldo Costa designed car, and it’s clear now they won’t in 2018 once again. In fact the gap has widened even more. Lewis Hamilton buried the opposition in winning pole position for the 2018 Formula 1 season-opening Australian Grand Prix, and it would have been an all-Mercedes front row if his Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas didn’t crash out of qualifying.
Sparks flew in Melbourne on Friday – and not just on the race track. In the FIA press conference Ferrari’s Maurizio Arrivabene and Red Bull’s Christian Horner were at odds over a supposed gentlemen’s agreement the teams had in place about the recruitment of F1 personnel.

On the final day of F1 preseason testing, Kimi Raikkonen came within a tenth of a second of teammate Sebastian Vettel's unofficial lap record on Friday using the hyper-soft tires, while Fernando Alonso’s McLaren Renault once again came back on the flatbed. Alonso managed just seven laps before grinding to a halt on the escape road on the right-hand side of the track before Turn 7 and causing a red flag. Sebastian Vettel stole the show the penultimate day of Formula 1 pre-season testing in Barcelona, blitzing the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya track record as Ferrari turned up the wick. Vettel completed a number of fast hypersoft tire runs towards the end of the morning session, recording a fastest lap time of 1:17.182 to comfortably record the best time of pre-season testing so far and finish over one second clear of the field.
Sebastian Vettel obliterated the unofficial lap record at Barcelona on Thursday morning of Formula 1 pre-season testing. The Ferrari driver used hypersoft tires for the first time just before lunch break on a qualifying simulation to log the first sub-1m18s lap of the pre-season, a 1m17.953s, and then proceeded to lower it to a 1m17.644s, a 1m17.279s and finally a 1m17.182s on consecutive laps. Daniel Ricciardo broke the 10-year track record at Circuit de Catalunya for Red Bull to top the times on the second day of the second Formula 1 pre-season test while McLaren missed almost seven hours of track time. Sebastian Vettel led Ferrari to the top of the timesheets on the opening day of the second Formula 1 pre-season test in Barcelona as McLaren completed fewer laps than any other team, suffering three on-track stoppages. Despite finishing one second off Lewis Hamilton's fastest lap from the opening week of testing, Vettel focused mainly on long runs behind the wheel of the Ferrari SF71H, completing 171 laps - over 2.5 race distances.
With warmer and hotter conditions greeting the F1 paddock at the start of the second test compared to last week’s maiden test which was hampered by snow and cold weather Sebastian Vettel topped Valtteri Bottas on the opening morning of the second Formula 1 pre-season test at Circuit de Catalunya. Weather did not cooperate in Barcelona, Spain this past week where F1 teams carried out a 4-day test with their new cars for 2018. The teams had to fight fog, rain, snow and near freezing temperatures all week long but still managed to squeeze in a fair amount of laps over the four days. The goal of the first test was to make sure the car ran without issues and to work out any major bugs. Lewis Hamilton gave us a glimpse of how unbeatable the new Aldo Costa designed Mercedes will be when he laid down a lap on Thursday over 1-second faster than 2nd quick man Stoffel Vandoorne on tires 4 levels harder. After taking to the track for the first time last week in its one-off 'Disruptobull' livery for a filming day at Silverstone, Aston Martin Red Bull Racing’s 2018 challenger, the RB14, today returned to its familiar racing color scheme as testing for the new Formula 1 season got underway on a cold and overcast Monday at Circuit de Barcelona – Catalina.

Force India unveiled its 2018 Formula 1 car an hour before the start of pre-season testing. The new VJM11 has a pink livery for sponsor BWT - although there is now more white on the nosecone, engine cover and rear wing and around the cockpit. Development driver Nikita Mazepin will drive Monday while regular drivers Esteban Ocon and Sergio Perez will then take turns in the car later in the week.
The highly anticipated first collaboration between Scuderia Toro Rosso and Honda, the STR13, was unveiled this morning, just before the first day of pre-season testing got underway at the Barcelona-Catalunya Circuit. McLaren today revealed its much-anticipated new Formula 1 car. The striking MCL33 will contest the 2018 FIA Formula 1 World Championship, and marks the first time in McLaren’s 52-year history that it has run a car powered by Renault engines. The car will race in a stunning new livery that draws its inspiration directly from the team’s iconic papaya orange and blue color scheme that McLaren first raced in Formula 1 50 years ago.
The British media likes to fawn over Adrian Newey, but in fact Aldo Costa designed cars have won as many F1 World Driving titles (ten) as Newey and the two are tied for the most in history. However, Costa has 12 constructor championships under his belt, and this is tops in F1.
Ferrari has unveiled its latest grand prix racing car, the SF71H, ahead of the 2018 Formula 1 season and its design is a lot like the new Mercedes - a longer wheelbase this year, like the Mercedes and a much narrower car, especially at the back. The sidepods are especially aggressive and it remains to be seen whether Ferrari has caught and passed Mercedes in performance.

Max Verstappen is looking forward to getting back into the Red Bull Racing F1 cockpit this season after a frustrating 2017 ended with him finishing sixth overall. The Dutchman suffered seven retirements last season, but believes he can use a relaxing off season to make a charge at his first drivers' title in 2018. Using specially-created tools, fans could see a stunning hologram projection of the car and spin it through 360 degrees to see its brand-new lines and new black and yellow livery.
The Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team has launched its new challenger, the C37, ahead of the 2018 Formula 1 championship. The C37 looks different to last year’s C36 – on one hand, this is due to the new technical regulations, and on the other hand, because of the team’s new technical approach.

Williams Martini Racing has revealed a first look of its 2018 Formula One challenger, the Williams Mercedes FW41, at the team’s season launch in London this evening. The FW41 looks significantly different to its predecessor, the FW40, following input from the team’s Chief Technical Officer, Paddy Lowe, and Head of Aerodynamics, Dirk de Beer, who were both appointed at the beginning of last year, to join forces with Chief Designer Ed Wood.
Haas F1 Team’s 2018 challenger in the FIA Formula One World Championship, the VF-18, made its official debut today via the organization’s social media platforms and website. The VF-18 is an evolution of the team’s second car, the VF-17, which carried Haas F1 Team to an eighth-place finish in the 2017 constructors standings. Forty-seven points were scored by the VF-17 during Haas F1 Team’s sophomore season, 18 points more than the total earned in the organization’s debut season in 2016.

Back-to-back eighth-place finishes in the constructors standings of the FIA Formula One World Championship has earned Haas F1 Team respect in the paddock. In its 2016 debut, the American team outperformed the factory Renault team (ninth), Sauber (10th) and Manor (11th) and then bettered McLaren (ninth) and Sauber (10th) as the Formula One grid shrank to 10 teams in 2017. Gene Haas, founder and chairman of Haas F1 Team, does not expect to be an 8th place team much longer.
Few racing cars are restored forty years later by the very people that built it in the first place, but that’s exactly what’s happened to the little-known Connew F1 car, which will be on display at Race Retro, powered by Motor Sport, held 23-25 February at Stoneleigh Park, Warwickshire. The car, featuring in the Motor Sport Hall of Fame Live, was built in a time when F1 was possible for those with big ambitions and small budgets, and not just a pipe dream. Peter Connew was a designer at Team Surtees who decided to build his very own F1 car and in 1970 set out to do just that.
