Still recovering from a knee injury, Bill Elliott struggled on crutches, slowly hobbling to his car on Dover's pit road. Once lifted into the cockpit, however, Elliott was all business, finishing with a respectable 19th position. His finishing position was not at all indicative of how well he raced all day.
Starting from seventh, Elliott spent most of the day in the top five, even taking the lead late in the race after some great work by his pit crew got him out in front at lap 252. Sporting a special McDonalds McFlurry paint scheme for the event, his next pit stop would put a freeze on the prospects of a good finish. A problem with a loose lug nut cost the team valuable time and track position.
"We just didn't get the left rear (tire) tight there at the end", lamented Elliott. "I was a little bit loose there after the last caution with about 130 to go or 40 to go, and I was about to give out. I think it's taken the wind out of my sails."
Elliot was obviously exhausted after the event, both physically, from the knee injury, and mentally, from the problem in the pits.
