Corvette Racing Tops GTLM Charts On Final Day of ‘Roar’ Testing
No. 4 Corvette fastest in GTLM
Corvette Racing posted the two quickest times in Sunday’s third and final day of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship Roar Before The Rolex 24, with the No. 4 Corvette Racing Chevrolet Corvette C7.R driven by Oliver Gavin leading the way at 1:45.915 (121.003 mph).

However, the final practice session was indicative of the variety of the factory-backed competition in the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship GT Le Mans (GTLM) class. An SRT Viper GTS-R led the session, followed by a Porsche 911 RSR and a Corvette C7.R – with an Aston Martin Vantage not far behind.

Jonathan Bomarito led the class with a lap of 1:46.496 (120.343 mph) in the No. 93 Pennzoil Ultra entry from SRT Motorsports. Patrick Long was second quickest in the No. 912 Porsche North America machine at 1:46.779 (120.024 mph), followed by Antonio Garcia in the No. 3 Corvette Racing C7.R, 1:46.783 (120.019 mph). Westbrook Fastest on Final Day of Roar Before The Rolex 24
Westbrook in the No. 90 Corvette DP
Spirit of Daytona Racing left the November TUDOR United SportsCar Championship open test at  Daytona International Speedway with a torn-up race car.

The team returned to Daytona for the Roar Before the Rolex 24 with a brand-new race car and took the honors of running the fastest lap on Sunday, the final day of the three-day test session. Richard Westbrook – who avoided injury in the November incident – led the Prototype (P) competitors with a lap of 1:39.748 (128.484 mph) in the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP he co-drives with Michael Valiante and Mike Rockenfeller.

“We’re really happy with the test, especially after the accident here in November,” Westbrook said. “That was the worst possible start for our 2014 campaign. Ironically, it’s helped turn everything around. Now, we’ve got a brand new car, the guys are on top of it, and I’ve got two great teammates. It’s still early, but we had a fantastic, trouble-free test and a nice car. Daytona is a fantastic place to drive when you have a nice car. More ...

The economics of NASCAR  Stick and ball sports have attracted most of the attention in the growing academic literature on the economics of sports. Less attention has been paid to motorsports, even though spectator attendance at automobile racing events matches or exceeds that of most other sporting events.

This paper examines the sanctioning of motorsports in the U.S. by NASCAR and explores how the business model of this sanctioning body is distinguished from other sports. The economic incentive for contract compatibility between NASCAR and the tracks is explained and an economic rationale is provided for the generous contracts NASCAR has with downstream tracks.

A statistical analysis of the uncertainty of outcomes for NASCAR and other professional sports provides a rationale for the growing popularity of stock car racing. This paper gives you an idea of how NASCAR has been so good about building relationships in sport. The contrast to IndyCar is very telling. Download PDF

For Ganassi, a season of tragedy, triumph
Chip Ganassi
Chip Ganassi said it took all his emotional strength and mental toughness to gather the broken pieces of his IndyCar Series program amid the personal tragedy of losing his father last summer. Floyd Ganassi played an integral role in the success of Chip Ganassi Racing, an open-wheel program that has amassed 10 driver championships and four Indianapolis 500 victories.

The elder Ganassi offered encouragement before a middle-of-the-road NASCAR operation thrust itself into the spotlight in 2010 by sweeping stock car racing's most prestigious events: the Daytona 500 and Brickyard 400.

More important, Floyd Ganassi was the embodiment of his son's will to win. So as tempting as it was to take a step back from his Sprint Cup and IndyCar programs, Chip Ganassi remained focused on putting together a successful 2014 campaign. More ...

Dakar Rally set to begin
The drivers and riders participating in the Dakar spent three days going through the technical and administrative scrutineering in Rosario's City Center, which is also home to the biggest casino in South America. All bets are off regarding who will emerge victorious from among the 431 vehicles (174 motorcycles, 40 quads, 147 cars and 70 trucks) cleared to start the first stage tomorrow morning.

Minis blowing away the competition have become a common sight at the Dakar, especially with Stéphane Peterhansel's victories in the last two editions. In 2014, the aura of shock and awe that surrounds Team X-raid was already palpable in the scrutineering venue. With 12 cars, 11 of them Minis, the host advancing towards the stands seems mind-bogglingly strong. In terms of manpower, the team is running a 150-person operation… and that is without even counting the 24 drivers and co-drivers who will jump into their cars tomorrow morning. More ...

2013 IndyCar vs. NASCAR prize money  Below is a table of prize money awarded in IndyCar this year. Interesting to note, Carlos Munoz was third overall in prize money finishing second at Indy. He earned more than twice what James Hinchcliffe, who won three races, did.

In terms of driver prizes, there was a total of $15,610,165 awarded. $12,020,065 was from Indy 500!

While there is the Leader Circle, the questions has to be asked: how can IMS/IndyCar expect anyone to take the rest of the series seriously with such a disproportionate amount of money awarded for one race. Yes, it is the biggest race, but it seems they deliberately want it so big that it outweighs the importance of the remainder of the series.  Like we said, the Hulman George family wants to keep the IndyCar series small (hence why races remain on NBC Sports Network) so the series can never again threaten their bread and butter, the Indy 500.  As long as they sell a lot of tickets for the Indy 500, that's all that matters. I almost red-flagged race - Whiting
Charlie Whiting
Formula 1 race director Charlie Whiting has revealed that the British Grand Prix was close to being red-flagged, with four drivers suffering left-rear tire failures.

Whiting, who deployed the Safety Car following the third tire-related incident involving Jean-Eric Vergne, argued that alongside the danger to drivers, marshals were being put under increasing risk as they attempted to clear away the mass of debris.

"It was quite close to being red-flagged; it did occur to me to do that," said Whiting. "To clear up all the debris was putting marshals at risk, and it is not satisfactory. We haven't seen a failure like this before – and that is what has been addressed. So we need to analyze it very carefully to see if we are able to establish the cause."

Whiting said it is "too early to draw conclusions" as to the cause of the issues, but reckons tires that did not fail could provide vital clues for sole tire supplier Pirelli. More ...

Race Track tax break to expire  Every year, there are a raft of "temporary" tax breaks, credits, and deductions that expire on Dec. 31. Lawmakers usually plan on extending them. But they don't always get to it on time. This year, Congress let about 55 different tax breaks expire on Dec. 31. In theory, Congress could still extend these (retroactively) for 2014. One such tax break was: A tax break to help NASCAR build racetracks. This tax break allowed anyone who builds a racetrack to receive a small tax benefit through accelerated depreciation. (It was called the "NASCAR loophole," but it doesn't just help NASCAR.) Supporters claimed the break is necessary so that NASCAR can compete on a level playing field with other theme parks. But it's gone now, unless Congress decides to extend. Cost to extend: About $50 million per year.

The 23-year-old Briton, who was runner-up in the LMP2 class in last year's World Endurance Championship, will take part in this weekend's official Daytona test with the team. He is scheduled to contest the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship opener on Jan. 25-26 in its ORECA-Nissan 03 alongside team regulars Klaus Graf and Lucas Luhr.

Brundle, whose father Martin won Daytona with Jaguar in 1988, said: "I'm here at the test [which begins tomorrow, Friday] with Muscle Milk and the plan is for me to do the race, so it is a great way to start 2014.

"The whole thing is down the input of Nissan [with which Brundle has links going back to 2012] and Darren Cox [the manufacturer's global motorsport boss], so I have to say thanks to them for getting me this great opportunity. The Muscle Milk entry is one of six LMP2 machines that will go up against 10 uprated Daytona Prototypes and the solo DeltaWing in IMSA's Prototype class.

The announcement is a result of the series' ownership group listening to competitor feedback throughout the 2013 season and at the State of the Series Meeting held at the SEMA Show back in November 2013.

The TCA class, an evolution of the current TCB class, places an emphasis on maintaining cost effectiveness while providing an easy avenue to entry into professional racing. Performance modifications are limited to stock sealed motors and stock transmissions, limited suspension modifications, StopTech front brakes and stock bodywork with no composites. Examples of eligible cars include the Honda Civic Si, Mazda MX-5, Ford Focus, and Scion FR-S.

The series has reduced entry fees for the TCB class in 2014 by 13% and the class rules remain stable with the addition of rewards weight to further balance competition. TC class rules remain stable for 2014. More ...

I know what Michael Schumacher is going through  Michael Schumacher can heal. I hope and believe that he’ll make a full recovery and that he will do so at astonishing speed. Right now, the biggest concern is the epidural hematoma he has suffered. An epidural hematoma is basically bleeding and swelling in the brain. The swelling of the brain can be fatal, but there are a few aspects of Schumacher’s horrific accident that improve his chances:
  • He was injured while skiing in cool, ambient conditions, which help to reduce cranial pressure.
  • He was found quickly and promptly airlifted to the hospital.
  • The surgeons quickly assessed the problem and performed surgery to stop the building pressure.

This is also why the doctors have continued to induce the coma—most likely with the drug Propofol—that Schumacher had already fallen into, and why he is being kept in a state of hypothermia. The coma and a lower body temperature help minimize brain activity, which consequently helps to prevent further swelling and to stabilize the patient. Michael, by the way, probably won’t remember any of the accident. More ...

MSR Announces Another Partnership  Taskala, Ohio (2 January 2014) – Building on a program that was first established in 2013, Roberts Service Group has committed to a marketing partnership with Michael Shank Racing for the 2014 IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.

Roberts Service Group will be the title sponsor for the “Roberts Service Group FNA Show” on FM 95.5 The Game (Listeners can stream online: http://www.955thegameonline.com) with hosts Matt Finkes and Archie Madness live from Daytona International Speedway on January 24-25.

Roberts Service Group has over three decades of experience serving the Columbus area market, providing a range of services that include emergency power management, lighting, fiber optic network systems, and facility management. With an eye on long term sustainability and emerging technologies, Roberts also manages a range of green initiatives including solar and photovoltaic systems design.

Set to broadcast from Daytona International Speedway on Friday, January 24, and then again ahead of the race start on Saturday, January 25, the “Roberts Service Group FNA Show” will feature an on-the-ground broadcast that is expected to include appearances from a wide range of participants on hand for the huge series kick-off event.

“We are so excited to be able to continue to support Michael Shank Racing,” said Beth Butler, President, Roberts Service Group. “Working with the team last year, we had a great event at Mid-Ohio, bringing out our clients, some potential customers, and our employees.  It was great to work with another Columbus area business and it went very well. With the schedule changing for 2014, we wanted to find a smart way to continue to be involved with the team and Mike (Shank) made a concerted effort to look for a sponsorship package that would work for us.  Backing the radio show is a great fit, and we are honored to be partners with this team.”

Finkes, who is a former The Ohio State University and National Football League player, will be making his first-ever visit to the Rolex 24 as he and Roberts Service Group FNA Show co-host Madness prepare to bring live updates to Michael Shank Racing’s home market in the lead up to the big season-opening race.

As part of the expanded partnership, the No. 60 Michael Shank Racing Ford EcoBoost/Riley will  also carry branding from Roberts Services Group through the 12-race season.

“When we found out that Mid-Ohio was not part of the schedule for this year, we went to work to find a new way for Roberts to be involved with the team and create a productive way for them to invest their marketing dollars, so I’m really happy to have them with us not only at Daytona, but also all year long,” said team owner Mike Shank.

“Launching this TUDOR Championship has created incredible interest from a commercial point of view and that is probably one of the most exciting parts of this entire transition. As busy as my guys have been getting ready for the race, we’ve been working flat out on finalizing our partnership plans for next year so I am really optimistic about what is ahead of us.”

Michael Shank Racing, which has also been a long-time fixture in the Columbus area market, recently announced the return of John Pew and Ozz Negri to drive the No. 60 Ford EcoBoost/Riley combination as the sport takes a dramatic turn into the future with a new, merged championship and the first-ever race of the TUDOR Championship with the Rolex 24 At Daytona as the team looks to add another win in the huge race as the group accomplished in 2012.

Former championship-winning race driver turned team owner, Shank has continued to add to his list of talents with an emerging series of appearances on the radio as part of the Rocky Fork-sponsored radio show on 95.5 the Fan in the Columbus area. Those Tuesday morning appearances helped to spur this new opportunity.

“It is a fun show to listen to and everyone does their homework and really knows what they are talking about so to have the show broadcast from the race itself is going to be really cool,” said Butler. “They draw people into the sport and Mike (Shank) never stops promoting the races. Mike (Shank), Marybeth (Shank), and the entire team are the best. Their commitment to each other, to the team, and to the series is a powerful thing.  We share in the belief that success comes with dedication and a drive to be the best.  We were there at Daytona for the record run, and that was a great example of this team making strides as a company to be better, to go faster, and to do a better job and that is how we approach a lot of what we do with our customers.”

The inaugural TUDOR Championship opens with the 52nd Rolex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 25-26, 2014.
