Following the 2015 death of racer Justin Wilson, there's been much talk about implementing cockpit protection in IndyCar. This parallels F1's push towards halo cockpits, which were initially set to debut in 2017 but was pushed back to 2018. Now, IndyCar's talk is turning into serious consideration.
Motorsport.com reports that IndyCar organizers are actively researching the implementation of cockpit protection in the Dallara DW12 chassis used across the series. This was revealed at a trade show by Bill Pappas, IndyCar's head of competition and race engineering.

Alfonso Celis Jr Returns to Fortec Motorsports for 2017 World Series Formula V8 3.5
Alfonso Celis Jr is returning to Fortec Motorsports Ltd to race in the 2017 World Series Formula V8 3.5 competition.
Born in Mexico City in 1996, Celis Jr started karting in 2009 and made his debut in single-seaters in 2011 taking part in the LATAM Challenge Series with Megaracing. In 2012 Celis made the move to Europe and switched to the Formula BMW Talent Cup.
The young Mexican then signed with Fortec Motorsports for the 2013 Formula Renault 2.0 NEC season. He achieved eleven point-scoring finishes, including a podium in the closing race of the season at Zandvoort, finishing fourteenth in the overall series standings. During the 2013 season Celis Jr also competed in one-off entries to British Formula 3 and FIA European Formula 3 championships at Nurburgring and Zandvoort respectively with #TeamFortec.

ALLENTOWN, PA Ryan Flores of Cornelius, N.C., swept the (Three Quarter) TQ Midget Indoor Racing Weekend features inside the Allentown (PA) PPL Center by outrunning upstart Tommy Catalano and hard charging Jimmy Blewett to win the main event Saturday night for the second straight night.
"I got together with Erick (Rudolph) in the middle of the race on a restart and all of the sudden he (Tommy Catalano) is there making it three wide and taking the lead," Flores said.
"He was good, but I could see he was running at his limit. Next thing, he spun and I was able to pass him."
Court documents indicate Tony Stewart has tentatively withdrawn an appeal of a ruling that determined Axis Insurance Company does not have to cover legal costs and claims by the family of Kevin Ward Jr. against the three-time NASCAR Cup Series champion.
A federal judge ruled in July that Stewart's policy did not cover the Empire Super Sprints, the series Stewart was racing Aug. 9, 2014, when Stewart's car struck and killed Ward at Canandaigua (N.Y.) Motorsports Park.
McDowell and Parrott return to Leavine Family Racing in 2017
Leavine Family Racing (LFR) announced the return of veteran NASCAR driver Michael McDowell for the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season. McDowell will once again pilot the #95 Chevy and is signed on to be the primary driver for LFR in all 36 races next season, making the team Chase eligible for the first time since its inception in 2011.
Additionally, LFR is excited to welcome back championship winning NASCAR crew chief Todd Parrott for the 2017 season. Parrott, who took on the crew chief responsibilities for the team full-time in October of the 2016 season with only seven races remaining, led the #95 to earn six Top-25 finishes.
Mansfield returning to dirt track roots MANSFIELD,OH. — The long history of racing in Mansfield Ohio is deep, rich and dates back to 1959 when the original track (Mansfield Raceway) first opened as a 3/8 mile dirt track. It was converted to an asphalt track in 1999, renamed (Mansfield Motorsports Speedway) and has remained asphalt ever since. The speedway saw its pinnacle moments from 2004-2008 where it held NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series events and drew standing room only crowds of over 20,000 in attendance.
Despite rolling with five kilometers remaining of today’s competitive section (Stage 4) between San Salvador de Jujuy, Argentina, and Tupiza, Bolivia, Carlos Sainz and his co-driver Lucas Cruz succeeded in reaching this evening’s overnight bivouac. However, following the technical team’s evaluation of the amount work that would have been necessary to repair the car, it was judged that the mechanics would be unable to complete the job in the allotted time. Carl Jensen, a profound racer and vintage racing event official for Road America, passed away on January 5. He was 74.
"Everyone is deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Carl Jensen, he was family to us, a member of a long-standing kinship amongst racers and promoters throughout the country," said Road America President and General Manager, George Bruggenthies. Ford, America's truck leader, is celebrating a major milestone as F-Series now reigns as the top-selling truck in the country for 40 consecutive years and best-selling vehicle for 35 years.
Ford has now sold more than 26 million F-Series trucks since January 1977. Think of it like this: That many trucks could circle the globe more than three times, or, lined up bumper-to-bumper, would span 90,000-plus miles.
Ford truck leadership was established with the sixth-generation of F-Series for the 1977 model year, a time when 8-track tapes, disco and bell bottoms were the rage. The company was riding a sales wave – based on an all-new F-150 light-duty pickup featuring an improved 351-series V8 engine, standard front disc brakes, and an extended SuperCab offering.

Ginetta has today (4 January 2017) announced they will be a LMP1 chassis manufacturer for the 2018 FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC). The announcement comes on the back of the announcement of Automobile Club de l’Ouest’s (ACO) new 2017 LMP1 rules.
Ginetta has a longstanding relationship with the ACO, having been the founding manufacturer of the hugely successful LMP3 class in 2015. Despite their contemporaneous LMP2 chassis bid being unsuccessful, the Ginetta design team has remained a powerful force in prototypes, moving toward P1 spec having released the powerful G57 in 2016. Atlanta Motor Speedway will be repaved after 2017 NASCAR weekend

Twenty years after it was last resurfaced, Atlanta Motor Speedway's historic racing surface is scheduled to be repaved this spring, following the March 3-5 NASCAR Weekend triple-header. Work is scheduled to begin in late March with an expected completion in mid-April.
The current asphalt at AMS is the second-oldest racing surface on the entire NASCAR Cup Series circuit, and officials credit its longevity to a combination of the mild Georgia winters and a meticulous maintenance program over its entire two-decade lifetime.
Green Savoree Racing Promotions Announces New Marketing and Communications Team
Green Savoree Racing Promotions (GSRP), led by Kim Green and Kevin Savoree, announced today the appointment of three individuals to its newly-formed marketing and communications department. The goal will be to elevate the promotion, content generation, and fan interaction surrounding its four major motorsports and event properties which include Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, Honda Indy Toronto, Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, and The Mid-Ohio School.

The two-car Mazda Prototype team has confirmed the driver lineup that will compete in the top category of the 2017 IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship. For the third consecutive season, the drivers for the full 10-race championship season are Jonathan Bomarito, Tom Long, Joel Miller and Tristan Nunez. For the season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona, Verizon IndyCar Series drivers James Hinchcliffe and Spencer Pigot will join the driver lineup in the all-new Mazda RT24-P race cars under the new Daytona Prototype international (DPi) rules.

NASCAR Driver Kevin Harvick Joining Fox As Analyst For Eight Races
Fox Sports today will announce that NASCAR driver Kevin Harvick will call eight combined national series races for Fox this season as a guest analyst, as the 41-year-old driver starts to eye his post-racing career.
Harvick will call five Xfinity and three Camping World Truck Series races, including the Xfinity Series season opener at Daytona on Saturday, Feb. 25.
This will be the third season that Fox brings Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers into the booth, and Fox says it will soon announce other participating drivers in addition to Harvick.
