Ward's calls out Ford's EcoBoost engines for their crummy fuel economy
With a name like EcoBoost, one might expect Ford's line of turbocharged engines to be somewhat, um, economical. In other words, replacing displacement with a turbocharger is supposed to deliver better fuel economy. Based on the experience time and time again of multiple Autoblog editors, your author included, this is simply not the case.

Now, Ward's is calling out the cruddy efficiency numbers of Ford's EcoBoost line of engines. The column dresses down not just the new 2.7-liter V6 of the 2015 F-150, but also the 2.3-liter of the Mustang, the 1.5-liter from the Fusion and the 3.2-liter PowerStroke diesel found in the Transit, while also explaining why just one Ford engine was named to Ward's 10 Best Engines list.

Dakar Day 4: Barreda and Al-Attiyah win
Nasser Al-Attiyah
After spending most of the stage hot on the heels of Marc Coma, Joan Barreda turned on the afterburners to overtake his closest rival in the final kilometers and clinch his second stage win this year. Even more importantly, the HRC rider holds a sizeable lead after just four days of racing. Much of the same for Nasser Al-Attiyah, who also made it two this year after a closely fought battle and expanded his lead.

Joan Barreda had a comfortable buffer in the general classification in Chilecito this morning, but it certainly did not dampen his appetite. The presence of Marc Coma, a fast veteran, in his sights put the Spaniard in the ideal position to set a blistering pace and put time into the rest of the field. With Barreda's fighting spirit, merely shadowing his KTM rival was never an option, and a late surge was enough to earn Joan a second stage win in the 2015 edition and deal Coma a severe blow. However, the four-time Dakar winner knows there is still lots of racing left and is set to fight back from the very next stage.

You can buy Mario Andretti's personal 2009 Corvette ZR1
With victory in the Indianapolis 500, a Formula 1 World Championship, a win in the Daytona 500 and too many other motorsports accomplishments to list, Mario Andretti stands among not just the greatest American racing drivers of all time, but the greatest drivers, full stop. Apparently, the champ is also a fan of speed when not on the track, because now there's a chance to own what is said to be his personal 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 with just 12,872 miles on the clock.

The eBay Motors auction page clearly shows Mario Andretti standing with the car, but the rest of the ad is admittedly short on details. The vehicle history report lists only one previous owner – ostensibly Andretti. The exterior is a handsome Blade Silver Metallic accompanied by a Dark Titanium leather interior. However, the seller keeps additional information to a minimum as well with the description simply stating, "This 2009 Chevy Corvette ZR1 is owned by Mario Andretti and has been garage kept all its life. It is fully loaded with all option on this car."

The future buyer will get a seriously great car along with some huge bragging rights at any party by touting its ownership history. We've reached out to the seller for more particulars and provenance, and will update this story if we hear back. In the meantime, the auction for this C6 ends on Thursday, January 8, and currently the reserve isn't met. The price sits at a hefty $68,100 as of this writing, with six bids registered. Autoblog

Racing in the DNA of new Mazda Indy Lights engine
Mazda's endurance racing DNA will intersect with Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires beginning in 2015.

The 2-liter, 4-cylinder turbo, dubbed the MZR-R and built in partnership with Advanced Engine Research, began its life in the American Le Mans Series as a lightweight solution for prototypes.

The MZR-R, with reliability and power as its core attributes, went on to race at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, powered the ALMS LMP champions in 2011 and won its class at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 2012.

"Mazda and AER partnered on our first sports car engine starting in December of 2006 with the intent of competing in the American Le Mans series and the European Le Mans series," Mazda Motorsports director John Doonan said. "The sports car engine, over time, went through several iterations, specifically on the reliability front, and we got to a point where it was making incredible power for incredible lengths of time.

Sonoma Raceway to host fourth John's March Against Stomach Cancer:
Sonoma Raceway will host the fourth John's March Against Stomach Cancer on Jan. 17 to support the battle against gastric cancer, one of the world's leading causes of cancer-related deaths.

The event is named in honor of John Cardinale, the raceway's longtime vice president of media and community relations, who passed away in 2013 after a two-year battle with the disease, becoming one of nearly 11,000 people who die from stomach cancer in the U.S. each year.

"To be able to come together to support the fight against this terrible disease and to celebrate the spirit of people we loved is a privilege for which I am truly grateful," said Sacramento's Kathy Black, who attended the 2014 event. "We hope to come together every year to take time to remember and honor those we love."

John's March offers a unique chance to raise funds for No Stomach For Cancer (www.nostomachforcancer.org) and enjoy a symbolic "march" around the raceway's 12-turn, 2.52-mile road course. John's March has raised more than $40,000 over the past three years and is the only major fundraiser for gastric cancer on the West Coast.

Dakar Day3: Walkner surprises, Terranova wins in cars again
Orlando Terranova
Being a debutant does not necessarily mean being slow. In any case, KTM Matthias Walkner gave a fine demonstration of speed to pick up his first stage victory on the Dakar in the Bikes category, whilst in the car category Orlando Terranova enjoyed his second success in two days.

After finishing eighth on his very first special on the Dakar, then 6th on the longest special of this year's edition between Villa Carlos Paz and San Juan, Matthias Walkner decided to take the quickest route to his first stage victory on the Dakar. The Austrian three times MX1-MX3 world champion was in the leading trio at CP2 before going into overdrive, leaving the discipline's specialists in his wake and writing the first entry on his roll of honor for the King of all rallies at the finish in Chilecito. This performance puts him definitively among the riders to keep an eye on, whilst Marc Coma is being closely watched by all his rivals. After losing more than ten minutes the previous day, the title holder staged a comeback, finishing only 40 seconds behind Walkner.

NASCAR White elephant: Banks asked to take it on the chin for $17.6M (Update)
UPDATE
Like every other money losing business, the NASCAR Hall of Fame 'White Elephant' should be shuttered and the building sold so the banks can recoup some of their losses.

The city of Charlotte has proposed making a one-time payment of $5 million to Bank of America and Wells Fargo on a construction loan for the NASCAR Hall of Fame - but the banks would be required to write off the rest of a $19.1 million loan.

In addition, NASCAR has agreed as part of the plan to waive $3.2 million in past royalties it was supposed to receive from the racing museum. The Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, which operates the city-owned hall, hasn't been able to pay NASCAR any royalties on ticket sales, merchandise, and food and beverages because the hall has been losing more than $1 million a year since it opened in 2010.

The proposal is part of a city plan to get out of about $22.8 million of NASCAR hall obligations. If the deal is approved, the hall would also be given a break from future payments owed to NASCAR.

Why NASCAR's confusing format is driving away fans
Count NASCAR's convoluted, idiotic playoff system amongst the litany of reasons for its declines over the last decade
First there were 10 contenders. Then 12. Then 12, but with possible wild cards. Now there's 16, but only four get a shot at the Sprint Cup. Sound confusing? Well, that's been the essence of NASCAR's Chase for the Cup format in its 11 seasons due to constant tinkering by NASCAR's brass.

After four major format changes since 2004, fans need a break. Besides, constantly changing the rules is a double-edged sword for the series which has watched both television audiences and the bums in grandstand seats shrink over the past few years.

Although the new playoff-style elimination round Chase may bring more drama to the championship as the series wanted, but it's also overly complex and has the potential to confuse and frustrate fans. Besides, it really didn't deliver anyway.

Yes, the 10 races in the Chase for the Cup averaged about 125,000 more viewers per race at 4.4-million, but that doesn't tell the real story.
