Brett Moffitt Joins GMS Racing For 2019 Truck Series season
Brett Moffitt

Just a day after parting company with former truck series championship-winning driver Johnny Sauter, GMS Racing announced they're filling their recent driver vacancy with another former champion - hiring defending NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series champion Brett Moffitt as driver of the team's No. 24 Chevrolet.

Moffitt, who beat out Sauter, Justin Haley and Noah Gragson for the 2018 truck series title, had been without a ride after parting ways with Hattori Racing Enterprises after the season due to a lack of sponsorship. But with a title in his back pocket and six series wins last season, it was a foregone conclusion that Moffitt would stay unemployed for long.

Moffitt, who has been a journeyman driver most of his career, has made starts in all three of NASCAR's major touring series since making his first start in the Xfinity Series in 2012. His stint with GMS Racing will mark his third team in four years in the truck series.

Indy 500 to remain blacked out in Indy
Mark Miles and Doug Boles do not give a darn about the other IndyCar race promoters
Mark Miles and Doug Boles do not give a darn about the other IndyCar race promoters
IndyCar's new partnership with NBC for the '19 season "won’t change that fans in Indianapolis will have to be at the Indy 500 to see it live."

IndyCar CEO Mark Miles said the long-standing policy of blacking out the race on local TV "hasn’t changed" and the series is "not really re-evaluating that." INDIANAPOLIS STAR,

Editor's Note: Why aren't the other IndyCar races blacked out in their local markets so those promoters can also sell more tickets to cover their costs? Why? Because the 'family' only cares about their race (the 500) and the clear message to other race promoters - tough luck.

NHRA growing while others shrinking

While NASCAR, IndyCar and even F1 are seeing a shrinking of their markets and TV ratings, NHRA is bucking the trend and growing.

“The NHRA has really bucked the motorsports trend in a big way,” said Dave Moroknek, president and owner of MainGate Inc., Indiana based manufacturer and seller of licensed products in sports and other sectors. “They’re on a great trajectory.”

Year-over-year NHRA merchandise sales are up “a strong double-digit percentage,” Moroknek told IBJ, whose company handles merchandise sales for the series. And e-commerce sales are up 25 percent.

Overall attendance at the series’ in 2018 was up 10 percent, according to the NHRA. TV ratings were up 9 percent, with ratings for Sunday elimination broadcasts up 16 percent, according to New York-based Nielsen Media Research. And social media following is up 70 percent, according to the series.

“They’ve put all the pieces in the right place to build a foundation for growth,” Moroknek said.
