Team Pelfrey Signs Spencer Pigot
Spencer Pigot
After winning both the drivers’ championship and the coveted teams’ championship – for the second successive year – during a stellar 2012 campaign, Team Pelfrey today laid out its plan for continued success by confirming that rising American star Spencer Pigot will spearhead its attack on this year’s Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires.

The signing represents a natural progression for Pigot, who caught the eye of team owner Dale Pelfrey during his initial season of professional racing in 2011 and served as a Team Pelfrey Development Driver last year. The 19-year-old from Orlando, Fla., finished a close second in the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, winning eight of the 14 races while driving for Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing. He also co-drove with AR1.com staff to a dominant win in the 2012 St. Petersburg GP media go-kart race.  To say the AR1.com team smoked the competition was an understatement. More ...

Jeremy Mayfield: ‘I’m very encouraged’ about racing again  Former NASCAR driver Jeremy Mayfield says his call to a radio show to talk to NASCAR CEO Brian France was what he hopes is his first step forward to being reinstated in the sport.

Mayfield, who sat down for an interview with the Record Wednesday, also denies, as some reports have implied, that he called to confront France. He said he was not angry or confrontational and was sincere when he asked France what it would take to be reinstated in NASCAR.

On Tuesday night, France was appearing on Motor Racing Network’s NASCAR Live show. Mayfield got a text message from his wife, Shana, telling him France was on the show. Mayfield made the decision to call the show, figuring there was little chance he would be put through. Shana was with him at Wednesday’s Record interview. More ...

Dakar Day 6: Lopez wins in his own country, bittersweet victory for Al Attiyah  With a third stage victory on the Dakar 2013, Francisco Lopez (nickname Chaleco) provided a worthy celebration of the rally's arrival in his native Chile and moved into position behind the French trio of Pain, Despres and Casteu in the bike standings. In the car category, Nasser Al Attiyah won his 17th special stage and gained on Stephane Peterhansel, but, as team manager, this was tempered as his teammate Carlos Sainz was forced to drop out of the race.

The Dakar has well and truly arrived in Chile! Although the riders and drivers already crossed the border yesterday evening from Peru on the way to the bivouac in Arica, they undertook their first special stage this year on Chilean soil. This is the sort of alert that sets the national idol's senses buzzing. On home soil, even before reaching the Atacama Desert, Chaleco triumphed on the special stage sending a warning signal about his intentions for the rally's finish in his home capital… in a dozen days! Austin racetrack gets ‘fiscal cliff’ tax break  Circuit of the Americas, the new racetrack in Southeast Austin, could benefit from a tax break extended in the recent “fiscal cliff” negotiations.

A provision that detractors have nicknamed the “NASCAR loophole” allows auto race tracks to accelerate their depreciation schedule and possibly pay lower federal taxes as a result. The recent legislation extends the benefit to tracks placed in service after Dec. 31, 2011. The Austin circuit held its first auto race, the United States Formula One Grand Prix, in November.

“We are pleased with the extension of the tax provision which applies to the motorsports industry,” circuit spokeswoman Ali Putnam said. “This provision allows racetrack facilities to receive a small tax benefit through accelerated depreciation. The extender permits a quicker depreciation of capital asset investments in seven years, as opposed to a longer period, for motorsports facilities.” More ...

Homologation serves as INDYCAR's engine check system
IZOD IndyCar Series engine development director Trevor Knowles will visit Honda Performance Development in California and Ilmor Engineering (Chevrolet's partner) in the UK over the next 10 days to oversee the second year of engine homologation.

Homologation? The etymology is Greek; "homologate" is derived from homologeo (to agree). Basically, it's granting approval or confirming the meeting of standards, and - as it refers to the series - the sealing of mandated components for the 2.2-liter, turbocharged V-6 engines.

The parts and complementary technical drawings (listed below) will be used as references - a check system for engine manufacturer competition - during spot checking of engine teardowns.
