Newey: Vettel 'will bring things to Ferrari we rather he didn't'
Adrian Newey admits four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel will take Red Bull secrets with him having moved to Ferrari ahead of the 2015 season.

Vettel has left the team with which he won all four of his drivers' championships to replace Fernando Alonso at Ferrari, with the latter moving to McLaren. Newey says he understands the motivation behind Vettel's switch – despite Red Bull being the only team other than Mercedes to win a race in 2014 – but is also aware that Vettel's level of intelligence will see him able to transfer knowledge from one team to the other.

Dakar Day 8: Quintanilla wins, Coma takes control
Quintanilla

Although he was unlucky on his first two participations on the Dakar, fortune today smiled on Pablo Quintanilla. The Chilean won his first special stage and climbs onto the provisional podium in the general standings, a classification dominated by Marc Coma, who boasts a solid lead on his favorite rally and who is more than ever the favorite to succeed himself.

Pablo Quintanilla's career probably changed dimension today between Uyuni and Iquique. From a quick and consistent outsider since the start of the rally, the Chilean has taken on the status of stage winner and pretender for final victory on the Dakar.

Under CART, in the sports heyday, Champ Car/IndyCars used to go this fast but not now.  On February 14, 2014, the Hennessey Venom GT set a new world speed record for 2-seat sports cars by reaching a top speed of 270.49 mph - just watch how fast it reaches that speed.  Amazing.

First Gear Project Takes The Checkered Flag
This past summer, AutoRacing1 did an article on Guy Cosmo's unique crowdfunding idea, First Gear Project. Sadly, Cosmo announced over the weekend that FGP has been discontinued. Below, is a statement from the team at First Gear Project.

Just over a year ago we set out to create an open, independent crowdfunding platform to bring grassroots support and a new, creative business model to the motorsports industry. The result was First Gear Project - Crowdfunding dedicated to the Automotive & Motorsports Industries.  In our first few months we drew great interest from racers and racing enthusiasts and, as intended, helped some ambitious and brave project creators successfully fund their endeavors through FGP.  We are truly grateful for the wonderful community that rallied around us and are inspired by the incredible show of support that derived from this platform.

Indy Lights: Harvey returns to SPM for 2015
Jack Harvey enters 2015 as one of the favorites to win the Indy Lights championship
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- British driver Jack Harvey will return to Schmidt Peterson Motorsports (SPM) for his second year in Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires in 2015.

Harvey, 21, collected four wins, four poles and 10 podiums in the 2014 Indy Lights season to tie in driver points with Gabby Chaves, but Chaves walked away as the champion thanks to one more second-place finish than Harvey. After the narrow miss, Harvey and SPM will set out again to pursue the team's eighth Indy Lights title, this time in the new Dallara IL-15 chassis.

The Racing Steps Foundation (RSF), a not-for-profit organization that finances talented British drivers in their racing careers, returns as Harvey's sponsor.

Rain Slows Final Day Of Roar Before The Rolex 24 Testing
Starworks Motorsport waited until the closing minutes of Sunday's final Roar Before the Rolex 24 weekend at Daytona International Speedway to make a headline. With the track nearly dry following scattered showers throughout the day, the team bolted a set of slick tires on the No. 7 Dinan/Riley and sent out veteran Formula One star Rubens Barrichello – who promptly posted the fastest lap of the day by nearly five miles per hour.

Barrichello lapped the 3.56-mile circuit in 1:47.230 (119.519 mph). While he admits the lap was a fluke, the 11-time Formula One winner feels the team made major strides in preparation for the 2015 TUDOR United SportsCar Championship season-opening Rolex 24 At Daytona on Jan. 24-25.

Dakar Day 8: Yazeed Al-Rajhi gets his first stage win
Yazeed Al-Rajhi has been impressive since the start of his maiden Dakar, but he had to wait until the eighth stage to claim his first win in the toughest rally raid in the world. This prestigious triumph confirms the talent of the Saudi driver, still very much in the running for overall glory.

Yazeed Al-Rajhi, who won the Rally of Egypt ahead of current leader Nasser Al-Attiyah, is not an unfamiliar name among fans of the sport. However, the Saudi tackled the challenge of his maiden Dakar humbly, with his sights set on a top 10 finish. What is for sure is that he did not expect to claim his first win at the end of the first stage of the prestigious stage through the jaw-dropping Salar de Uyuni. Al-Rajhi has become more than just a new Dakar stage winner, taking on a new dimension today by moving up to within 18 minutes of Al-Attiyah in the general classification and keeping his chances open to win the Dakar in his first attempt.

Porsche Le Mans artist Wolinski killed in Charlie Hebdo atrocity
Georges Wolinski

The energetic start to the year was tempered by terrible events in France: the cold-blooded murder of seventeen people who were going about their business in a supposedly civilized society. The Parisian tragedies reminded us that free speech never comes cheap, and sent that message soaring above small minds trapped in earthly semantics.

One legendary character lost in the Charlie Hebdo atrocity was Georges Wolinski, a French cartoonist famous for his satire, but also with some Porsche connections. Wolinski decorated the 993 GT2 of Herve Poulain and Team Elf Haberthur Racing for the 1998 Le Mans in the greatest tradition of Poulain's first art cars: the BMW CSLs of the 1970s.

Gary Paffett: new super license system flawed
BIRMINGHAM, England (Reuters) - Formula One's new points-based super licence system for 2016 is flawed and needs a rethink, according to former McLaren test driver and 2005 German Touring Car (DTM) champion Gary Paffett.

The 33-year-old Briton told Reuters at the Autosport International show on Saturday that the governing FIA was wrong to ignore the DTM in a list of recognised feeder series.

The FIA has announced that from next year new applicants must be over 18 and to have acquired at least 40 qualifying points from other series in the last three years to obtain the mandatory licence.

The move would, if applied this year, have kept out Toro Rosso's 17-year-old Dutch rookie Max Verstappen and others with limited experience or success.

Daly eyes full-time IndyCar return
Since Tony George destroyed the sport by splitting it, and with it most of its commercial value, talented drivers like Conor Daly have to find ways to buy their ride. The ride-buying cancer is destroying the sport.

Conor Daly has revealed that he is chasing a full-time ride in the Verizon IndyCar Series for 2015 after spending the past four years on the ladder to F1 in Europe.

The American had hoped that racing in GP3 and GP2 would open doors to the top flight but instead, like a lot of F1 hopefuls, he remains frustrated. Having raced at the 2013 Indianapolis 500, however, he is keen to turn his attention back to the United States.

"Right now, we are working as hard as possible to get me in an IndyCar for the 2015 season," Daly confirmed, "Everyone told me growing up and going through the Mazda Road to Indy that it would be a huge addition to my career if I went to Europe. I think it was a great decision because it is the toughest environment in the world to develop as a driver. You go up against the best, and force yourself to learn and focus at a higher level. Now I can't wait for an opportunity to use this experience competing at the top level of the sport - IndyCar.

"Without a doubt, I am now prepared to take advantage of an IndyCar opportunity. I feel like I have an extremely solid base of experience to move forward with a team at a high level. A GP2 car is similar to an IndyCar performance-wise on road courses, [but] I love ovals and have won on them in the past - and I've got an Indy 500 under my belt. All I need is that opportunity!"

Daly admits that there are times he questions the decision to move to Europe – he was leading the 2011 Indy Lights championship at the time - but does not diminish the experience he gained from it.

"I ask myself this question a lot actually," he smiled, "After seeing Josef Newgarden enter his fourth year in IndyCar, making a living and doing such a great job, it makes me wonder whether I made the right choice. However, I don't like to live in the past, I am always looking forward. No matter what, I am proud of what I accomplished in Europe and am ready to move forward with my career whatever direction that may take me.

"I think the perception [that Europe is the best training ground] has changed slightly due to the economy and the lack of team sponsorship these days. The pure opportunities, meaning chances given to drivers without a price tag attached are appearing less and less. However, I think I gained some respect from IndyCar teams after competing over there for several years, so hopefully that will turn into something over the next few weeks."

While he would consider a return to sportscar racing following a one-off appearance at Daytona last season, Daly insists that IndyCar remains his main focus for the coming season.

"At the moment, I have been 100 per cent focused on IndyCar and have not had time to pursue a sportscar drive, although I would jump at the chance if offered an opportunity," he noted, "I just hope IndyCar teams see the importance of having a constant flow of new talent coming into the sport. It will be extremely important to have a next generation of young drivers get a chance to show what they can do and generate interest for new young fans. There is nothing I would like more than to have the American flag on the IndyCar podium - with donut smoke still lingering in the air!" crash.net
