Ryan Dalziel
Ryan Dalziel
The Florida-based DragonSpeed team today confirmed details of its plans to contest the 2015 Blancpain Endurance Series (BES) - becoming the first US team to join the world's premier GT3 endurance championship - alongside its four-car Pirelli World Challenge (PWC) effort in North America.

The five-race BES (organizer SRO also runs a seven-round sprint championship) will visit the current or former F1 circuits at Monza (3h), Silverstone (3h), Paul Ricard (1000km), Spa Francorchamps (24h), and Nurburgring (3h). The team will operate from a state-of-the-art facility in Switzerland at the Octane 126 Ferrari sales and service center near Zurich airport.

As previously announced, DragonSpeed will run the same Ferrari 458 GT3 used in PWC last season, resettled to European GT3 specification by chief engineer Mark Schomann, recognized as a leading Ferrari GT racing expert from his years with the Risi, Krohn, and RAM teams. The 458 itself is an established pacesetter in global GT3 competition and especially suited to the European tracks. The car's first outing will be the BES pre-season test at Paul Ricard in the south of France on 11-12 March.

NASCAR spotters find similar role in Rolex 24 much more challenging
NASCAR is NASCAR and sports cars are sports cars – and never the two shall meet, right?

But at the upcoming Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway, that demarcation line is getting more blurry than ever.

Two of the best spotters in NASCAR will be lending their eyes and (hopefully) calming voices on the team radio in this year's Rolex 24.

No quit in them: Future looks promising for Wood Brothers
One of the new alliances that came about during the offseason was the Wood Brothers striking a deal with Team Penske. The famous No. 21 will be piloted by Ryan Blaney and his crew chief will be Jeremy Bullins.

Unfortunately, Roush Fenway Racing, which the Woods were previously aligned with all those years, has been struggling of late, so I think this is a very positive move for the Wood Brothers.

Rico Abreu wins the Chili Bowl
TULSA, Okla. (January 17, 2015) Saturday night at the Chili Bowl was one for the record books, as California's Rico Abreu raced to his first triumph in the finale of the 29th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Midget Nationals presented by General Tire, delivering car owner, Keith Kunz, his first Golden Driller since 2002.

"I just tried to stay as patient as I could. You know the race is a not a long race, but it is a long race. For a few laps I just kind of got after it just to see where we were at and I hung with him [Bryan Clauson] pretty good," commented Abreu about his pass for the lead. "I don't know how hard he was racing, but when the time was right I pulled the trigger and gave him a slide job and was waiting for him to slide me back. We dragged raced each other into three and I came out with the lead."

Dan Andersen has brought Indy Lights back from brink
Dan Andersen - the best thing to happen to IndyCar in years.  Now if he would just buy IndyCar too.
Less than two years ago, many people in the IndyCar Series paddock thought the U.S. open-wheel circuit's primary feeder series - Indy Lights - was on death's doorstep.

"It was a serious situation," said Derek Daly, a racing analyst for WISH-TV Channel 8 and former race driver. "That's where many of the IndyCar's stars were spawned, and it looked like that stream was drying up."

Enter Dan Andersen, a New Jersey native who made a fortune in construction and manufacturing. He had three things IndyCar was desperately seeking in someone to revive Indy Lights: a strong background in motorsports, lots of cash and other resources, and a deep commitment to developing young race car drivers.

Kurt Busch has no comment on legal issues
Inside the Panic Switch Army retail trailer in one corner of the Chili Bowl souvenir area, Kurt Busch was at rest Saturday. It has been a long January. On the way to a NASCAR/Goodyear tire test scheduled Monday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Busch dropped in on the Chili Bowl Friday and Saturday to get a taste of the country's No. 1 Midget racing event - and to sell a few T-shirts.

Busch had spent two days this week in Kent County (Del.) Family Court, where he and others testified in hearings about a protection order filed against Busch by Patricia Driscoll, his former girlfriend.

Stewart expects at least one more leg surgery
The long recovery process from a broken leg suffered in a dirt-track race in August 2013 continues for Tony Stewart. He had a fourth surgery last month, and a fifth - and, he hopes, final - operation is scheduled after the 2015 Sprint Cup season to remove the titanium rod that supports the right leg. "The leg isn't bad," he said.

"I was out here (working at the track [at the Chili Bowl]) on it for 12 hours Monday and didn't have a problem. That's a long day for anybody on their feet. I'm in pain, but I'm walking back and forth, so it's not terrible. The last surgery wasn't that bad. I feel better at this time this year than at the same time last year. I'm much further along. Video: World of Outlaws took to the legendary high banks of the Bristol Motor Speedway in 2001 (Update) UPDATE Long-time racing fans may remember that Bristol Motor Speedway was once covered in dirt for a pair of World of Outlaw events back in 2001 and 2002. And while the races proved to be successful, track executive Kevin Triplett says he does not currently foresee a scenario where dirt could return to the speedway over the next several years.

Taking fan questions on the first episode of the official #AskBristol podcast, Triplett (the Vice President of Public Affairs) admitted that the conversion could take place but it would take a special series of circumstances.

"We never say never," Triplett said. "We've learned working for Bruton Smith that 'never' is a word that doesn't get used a lot. With that said, we would have to do a lot in order to do that again — for several reasons."

Olbermann showing His True Colors after attacking NASCAR and its fans
Keith Olbermann rips NASCAR
Keith Olbermann is back in the spotlight today, after launching a series of unprovoked attacks on NASCAR, its competitors and fans.

The host of the creatively named late-night program Olbermann on ESPN2 and Canada's TSN2 has long been known for caustic commentary, an intolerance for views other than his own and a propensity for placing himself at the center of every storm.

Olbermann is a sports fan, but no fan of NASCAR. Earlier this week, he took aim at the sport once again (see video), delivering an on-air commentary on the Kurt Busch/Patricia Driscoll court case that mocked both parties and compared them to the Brad Pitt/Angelina Jolie spy movie, "Mr. and Mrs. Smith." He made additional comments on social media, mistakenly identifying Kyle Busch as the subject of Driscoll's abuse allegations (rather than older brother Kurt), then referring to Driscoll as Kurt Busch's wife, rather than his ex-girlfriend.

The 27-year-old SMP-backed driver, who finished 16th in his first season of IndyCar competition with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports, will not return to the open-wheel ranks, with SMP Racing team principal Sergey Zlobin citing economical issues due to the recent collapse of the Russian economy in an interview with Web site, sportbox.ru.

However, the team’s sports car efforts will continue in 2015, as the Russian squad looks to defend its LMP2 World Championship with a pair of brand-new BR01 prototypes, alongside an expected single-car Ferrari F458 Italia entry in GTE-Am.

How is an F1 team structured?
You probably know Christian Horner dates a Spice Girl. But what does Red Bull's Team Principal do when he's actually working? AR1's Brian Carroccio has the answers.
In light of our recent two-part series (Part 1, Part 2) outlining the corporate and governance structure of Formula One, we have been asked how a Formula One race team is organized. And as you might suspect from our previous articles, similar to many things in Formula One, how exactly an F1 team is structured is well, complicated.

Hopefully, we can provide a few answers. And although we've decided to place this particular item on the Hot News page, go ahead and consider this part 3 of the series.

To begin, it should be made clear that no two teams’ structures, whether corporate or race operational, are totally alike. Keep in mind, that teams such as Red Bull, Scuderia Ferrari and Mercedes AMG Petronas are simply auxiliaries of multi-national, multi-billion dollar conglomerations. Even McLaren and to a lesser extent Williams are part of larger corporations, albeit not to the level of the ones mentioned above.

Although men such as Force-India owner Vijay Mallya and Sauber’s Peter Sauber are extraordinarily wealthy individuals, they are essentially privateer owners. Yes, this fundamental difference cannot be emphasized enough: Mercedes, Ferrari and Red Bull are auxiliaries of corporate behemoths; Force-India and Sauber are owned by really rich guys.

Target ceases operations in Canada
Scott Dixon leads teammate Tony Kanaan last year in Toronto.
(Editor's note: This USA Today article talks about retail superstore and longtime IndyCar sponsor Target's failed foray into Canada. It appears that Target's struggles are similar to other American retail giants in The Great White North.)

Target has company when it comes to its Canadian troubles.

Target's Thursday announcement of defeat in Canada may be one of the largest retreats from the country by a U.S. retailer, impacting 133 stores and more than 17,000 employees. But the news follows other major U.S. chains that have had trouble across the northern border and abroad.

• Best Buy announced in January 2013 the closure of 15 Canadian stores and a 5% workforce cut as part of an effort to re-tool its business. In November 2011, it had pulled out the United Kingdom, closing 11 stores.

FIA allows Honda to join engine 'unfreeze'
(GMM) Honda has been granted some engine development freedom for 2015.

The Japanese manufacturer had argued to the FIA that being left out of 2014 suppliers Mercedes, Renault and Ferrari's 'unfreeze' loophole was unfair.

F1's governing body originally believed Honda should have to stick to the strict February 28 homologation deadline, as it had been free to prepare its turbo V6 throughout last year and the forthcoming winter period while its 2015 rivals had been locked into the so-called 'freeze'.

Musk dangles track, car plant in wooing Texas lawmakers
Tesla Motors Inc. CEO Elon Musk urged Texas lawmakers on Thursday to ease restrictions on sales of the company's electric luxury cars as he floated the prospect of locating a new car factory or a test facility for his "hyperloop" mass transit concept in the state.

Texas is one of several states that have barred, or strictly limited, Tesla's ability to sell cars directly to consumers through company-owned stores.

Owners of franchised car dealerships in several states have lobbied to block Tesla's direct sales operations on grounds that they violate laws designed to protect auto retail franchises from competition from auto manufacturers.

Ferrari behind schedule on 2015 car design
Ferrari won't be winning many races in 2015
Ferrari admits it started late on the design of its 2015 car but thinks the lifting of the engine homologation deadline gives it a chance to make up lost ground this season.

It recently emerged the FIA had not written a homologation deadline date into the 2015 regulations, meaning Ferrari, Mercedes and Renault can bring updates to their power units over the course of the season via a token system. Ferrari president Sergio Marchionne called this an "early victory" for the team as it was technical director James Allison who pushed for the loophole.

GT racing is garnering serious interest from auto makers these days.
This Toronto Star article by Steph Wallcraft talks about how money is flowing into GT racing series these days. We've seen this in the Pirelli World Challenge, which has enjoyed momentum in recent years and we're likewise seeing this in the Tudor GLTM and GTD categories.

AutoRacing1 has also illustrated the point Steph made previously: more than ever need direct relevance between racing cars and road cars. Sanctioning bodies that understand this, and can best devise a formula that provides this direct relevance along with a compelling show for spectators will not only benefit their series, but the industry as a whole.

During this year's NASCAR coverage, for example, Fox Sports plans to program highlights, commentary, photographs and behind-the-scenes information on its NASCAR Facebook pages.

"You go where the people are," Fox Sports President Eric Shanks said at an industry conference last month. "It's naïve to think that you can wave a magic wand and that there's going to appear a second screen that's more powerful than Facebook."

Could Kurt Busch allegations be true?
Patricia Driscoll
NASCAR driver Kurt Busch has been a news topic for the last few months, and for all the wrong reasons. This week he was in a courtroom in Delaware at a hearing stemming from an alleged domestic incident. The original incident made headlines late last year when allegations of domestic assault surfaced between Busch and his former girlfriend Patricia Driscoll. The incident occurred while NASCAR was at Dover International Speedway during the weekend of Sept. 26-28. Driscoll, filed for a court order of protection alleging that Busch was verbally abusive and that he wished he "had a gun so he could kill himself."

As a result of the incident Driscoll has asked that Busch,36, be evaluated by a psychiatrist and that he stay away from her and her son and that a protective order be issued. The hearing for that protective order wrapped up Tuesday and the testimony can only be considered bizarre. Among the allegations from Busch, given under oath, was that Driscoll a trained assassin and that she, among other things, in the inspiration for one of the female characters in a major motion picture about the assassination of Osama Bin Laden.

2015 race deal not done yet - Hockenheim
Nurburgring has decided to let Hockenheim lose their shirt on an F1 race rather than them.
(GMM)  Hockenheim's circuit boss has warned that a deal to host the German grand prix this year has not yet been reached.

F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone said on Thursday that, amid the Nurburgring's ongoing ownership uncertainty, the track will not host the race next year as scheduled.

"It is going to be at Hockenheim (instead)," he told Reuters, "we're in the middle of doing something with them.

"We've got a contract in place, we just have to amend the years of the contract.  It was alternating with Nurburgring so we'll just take that out," Ecclestone added.

Castroneves hoping to win Indy, Detroit again
Castroneves leads Hunter-Reay late in last year's Indy 500 but at the flag Hunter-Reay was in front
If not signing autographs for fans, he is cracking jokes, smiling and posing for photos with anyone who asks.

Brazilian-born Helio Castroneves is a magnet, a three-time Indy 500 winner and veteran of Team Penske, an athlete who knows the value of good public relations.

He also dances like Fred Astaire - well, I'm exaggerating slightly, but he partnered with Julianne Hough to win the fifth season of "Dancing With the Stars."

Thursday, he was at the North American International Auto Show at Cobo Center to meet fans, shake hands with sponsors and promote the May 29-31 Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.

French F1 Supplier Renault Links Up With Ilmor Engineering
French F1 supplier Renault is "linking up with an engine specialist" based in Northampton, U.K., according to John Murray Brown of the FINANCIAL TIMES. Ilmor Engineering said on Wednesday that it was "restricted by confidentiality agreements from commenting on the collaboration." But Red Bull, one of the teams that used the Renault engine last season, "has confirmed the link-up."

It will give Renault access to Ilmor co-Founder Mario Illien, a long-time F1 engine designer. The link-up means that this season, "of the four engine suppliers to the sport, three of them -- Renault, Mercedes and Honda" -- will now be tapping into U.K. "engineering expertise when the checkered flag comes down on the opening race."

The one engine supplier not linked to the U.K. is Ferrari. Motorsport Industry Association CEO Chris Aylett said, "If you're in engines and more specifically F1 engines, it would appear that Northampton is the place to be." Aylett estimates revenues from U.K. motorsport are growing about 10-15% a year and the sector is worth $13.7B to the economy. FT

Dixon said turns 1 and 10 are long straight areas, which is conducive to passing.

"It's a great opportunity for passing," said Scott Dixon. "It's quite bumpy, which makes different characteristics to the car and how you tune it. For drivers, it makes it quite interesting."

AJ Foyt 80 on Friday and feeling it
Super Tex
Super Tex turns 80 on Friday, and he feels it.

A.J. Foyt said he's lost 50 pounds since burning in his upper chest Nov. 7 led to triple bypass heart surgery and an extended hospitalization due to lung complications. He slept through 10 days prior to Thanksgiving and only recently shed the walker confining him to short distances.

For a racing hero accustomed to traveling fast, it's been a painfully slow ride.

"I'm going crazy," Foyt said. "I've got nurses that come two times a day, and I can't hardly eat because nothing tastes good; it all tastes (bad) I guess because of all the antibiotics they've been pumping in my stomach."

Probe By Spanish Courts into 2012 Valencia F1 Race Continues (Update) UPDATE
Valencia
Spain's Prosecutor's Office believes it should be the Valencia Superior Court Justice that admits the charge against Francisco Camps, a former president of the Valencia region, "for his management of the Valencia F1 race" in '12 due to "strong criminal indications," according to the EFE.

The Prosecutor's Office's Valencia delegation wrote in a letter that "from related proven facts, supported by due diligence, there appear indications of possible criminal actions that implicate Camps."

On Dec. 19, Spain's Prosecutor's Office began an investigation into "alleged corruption and embezzlement in the awarding of contracts" to hold the '12 F1 race in Valencia. The letter from the Prosecutor's Office said, "The only person from the Valencia government that negotiated and decided on this subject was Francisco Camps." EFE

NASCAR explains new pit road technology
NASCAR officials will no longer be standing alongside crewmen to police pit stops in 2015, but that doesn't mean the sanctioning body won't be watching what takes place. A new, technologically driven system that incorporates the use of 45 cameras will feed video of every stop made by every team to a central location, where eight officials will log pertinent information and report any violations. How will it work?

Chiquita closing headquarters at NASCAR Hall of Fame
Chiquita Brands International is closing its Charlotte headquarters barely more than three years after deciding to move here, the company said Wednesday. Chiquita employs about 320 office workers uptown. Chiquita was acquired earlier this month for about $681 million by two Brazilian companies, who took the banana-and-salads firm private after a bruising takeover fight.

The move out of Charlotte will help streamline Chiquita's business and move its employees closer to suppliers and customers, Chiquita said in its message to employees. The company was lured to Charlotte from Cincinnati in 2011 with the promise of $22 million worth of state and local incentives. Chiquita moved into the NASCAR Plaza office tower, putting its iconic blue and yellow logo atop the building. The company has agreed to refund the city and county $1 million worth of the incentives money. Charlotte Observer

Nurburgring loses 2015 German grand prix
Nurburgring latest in long list of circuits that cannot afford F1
(GMM)  The Nurburgring has lost its round of the 2015 world championship, Germany's Bild newspaper reported on Thursday.

The fabled circuit was due to host the German grand prix this year, after Hockenheim staged it in 2014.

Until now, the two German circuits have annually alternated a single race allocation on the calendar.

But media reports earlier on Thursday said Hockenheim will in fact host the race for a second season in succession.

Q & A with Amlin Aguri's Antonio Felix da Costa
Antonio Felix da Costa, here in his F3 days, scored an opportunistic win in this past weekend's Buenos Aires ePrix
Antonio Felix da Costa may have missed the opening round of the year in Beijing but it hasn’t taken long for him to make an impact. The Amlin Aguri driver sealed his first Formula E victory in an action-packed race in Buenos Aires and we caught up with him to get his thoughts…

Congratulations on the win in Buenos Aires, talk us through the race from your perspective…

“Before the race weekend even, I felt like we made a really big step forward after the test day in Uruguay. We really improved a lot but it was the same for everybody as you could see with the laptimes being so close in qualifying. I felt really good going into the session but I didn’t want to risk too much and pushed for what was in the end a decent lap, which was only half-a-second from pole. In previous qualifying sessions it has been over a second! We ended up starting P9 but for this reason I think from now on we will see much more competitive qualifying and racing.

Hunter-Reay collects keepsake of '500' victory
The Baby Borg trophy Ryan Hunter-Reay and team owner Michael Andretti received for the 2014 Indy 500 win is so small it's an embarrassment to the sport. The Indy 500 is the biggest race in the world and that's the biggest trophy they give out? Brian France must laugh when he sees that.

Ryan Hunter-Reay envisioned the perfect location for his "Baby Borg" before winning the 98th Indianapolis 500 Mile Race in May 2014. Preparation always has been key for the 34-year-old Verizon IndyCar Series driver from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., who earned the series drivers' title in 2012.

"It's (going) front and center on a shelf by itself in my office at home. That and the championship trophy go together, but the Indy 500 is the one I'm most proud of," said Hunter-Reay, who was presented the BorgWarner Championship Driver's Trophy by BorgWarner CEO James Verrier during a dinner Jan. 14 as part of the Automotive News World Congress.

Also, Andretti Autosport team owner Michael Andretti was presented his third BorgWarner Championship Team Owner's Trophy. He also won in 2005 (Dan Wheldon) and 2007 (Dario Franchitti).

Andretti's third Owner's Trophy 'really special'
It's too much to ask of Michael Andretti to select which of the three Indianapolis 500 Mile Race victories as a team owner is his favorite. Each is special in its own right.

Andretti was presented his most recent BorgWarner Championship Team Owner's Trophy by BorgWarner CEO James Verrier during a dinner at the annual Automotive News World Congress. He also won in 2005 (Dan Wheldon) and 2007 (Dario Franchitti) under the Andretti Green Racing banner.

"These are special moments and this one is really special in what we were able to do with Ryan, who did such a fantastic job in the race," Andretti said. "Then it was the first one we won as Andretti Autosport and the way we won it. Those last six laps were some of the most exciting in Indianapolis 500 history."

Google battles lawsuit by Max Mosley over sex party images
Max Mosley
Google Inc. sought on Wednesday to block a lawsuit filed against it by former FIA boss Max Mosley in the High Court in London over access through its search engine to images of the former motor racing chief taking part in a sex party.

Google wants to avoid a legal obligation to monitor and limit the flow of data on the Internet. Mosley, who was present in court, argues the firm is breaching his fundamental right to privacy by allowing users to access the pictures.

The images were first published in 2008 by Rupert Murdoch's now-defunct News of the World, which said they showed a Nazi-themed orgy -- an incendiary story, as Mosley's father Oswald Mosley was a British fascist politician in the 1930s.
