Hamilton hails Mercedes' determination (to steal talent)
Hamilton says Mercedes determined.  Determined to poach?
Lewis Hamilton says the 'incredible determination' of his new Mercedes team spurred him through the winter after his first meeting with his 2013 crew (see rumors page, does he really mean Mercedes is not good enough and they now will do whatever it takes to steal top talent from other teams?).

Hamilton was speaking during an interview at his first official Mercedes engagement on Monday, when he toured the Mercedes-Benz museum in Stuttgart.

"To be back and to know I'm part of the Mercedes world is a real privilege. I'm so grateful to be welcomed into the team and really excited," said the former McLaren driver. More ...

Glock: F1 isn't a sport

An evidently-frustrated Timo Glock has described Formula 1 as being "nothing to do with sport" following his departure from Marussia.

The 30-year-old's exit from the team - and, in all likelihood, F1 - was confirmed early on Monday morning in a press release which made abundantly clear that Glock had lost his seat due to finances rather than form as Marussia sought to retain their place on the grid.

"The ongoing challenges facing the industry mean that we have had to take steps to secure our long-term future," confirmed team boss John Booth as he starkly attributed the divorce to "tough economic conditions". More ...

2013: Celebrating 50 Years of McLaren
McLaren M7C (1969) sits alongside the 12C Spider
When a 27-year-old Bruce McLaren penned those words in 1964, his new company, Bruce McLaren Motor Racing Ltd, was less than a year old.

In those days, Bruce’s vision was shared by fewer than half a dozen loyal souls, who slogged across the world to race his self-made cars. Nowadays, the McLaren Group employs more than 2000 people, all of whom still share Bruce’s ideals of combining sportsmanship with solid engineering practice and cutting-edge technical expertise.

McLaren M7C (1969) sits alongside the 12C Spider
On September 2nd 2013, the McLaren Group will celebrate its 50th anniversary.

If we were to follow Bruce’s words to the letter, there’d be little time for recollection, but on the eve of our half-century there’s surely time for the briefest of breaths and the opportunity to take a look behind us at the sweeping vista built up in the indelible shadow of our founder:

  • Our Formula 1 team has become a global household name; since our arrival in the sport, at the 1966 Monaco Grand Prix, we have won more races (182) than any other constructor, started from pole position 155 times and scored 151 fastest laps. In 2012, we achieved the fastest-ever time for a Formula 1 pitstop (2.31s at Hockenheim), recorded our 58th consecutive points-scoring finish, an all-time record, and have now led more than 10,000 racing laps.
  • The exploits of our greatest world champions will always bring F1 to life: Emerson Fittipaldi ignited the passion of his native Brazil; James Hunt created as many headlines on the front pages as on the back; Niki Lauda and Alain Prost turned sport to science; the burning intensity of Ayrton Senna will live on for ever, while Mika Hakkinen and Lewis Hamilton will always be remembered for their raw speed and fearless aggression.
  • Our legacy in North American sportscar racing is writ equally large: in the heyday of the mighty CanAm series, we steamrollered the opposition, lifting five successive championship trophies (1967-1971) and winning an incredible 43 races in our iconic, thundering V8-engined sportscars.
  • We went to the Indy 500 for the first time in 1970, returning with greater strength until we won the USA’s most famous motor race in 1974 with Johnny Rutherford. We repeated the feat with Rutherford in 1976, too.
  • Today, every single car in Formula 1, the IndyCar Series and NASCAR relies upon McLaren Electronics’ standardized ECUs to control their engines and feed data back to the garage.
  • Introduced back in 1993, the McLaren F1 road car has lost none of its unique appeal and is still considered by many to be automotive world’s definitive supercar. To this day, it remains the fastest naturally aspirated production car in the world. In GTR racing guise, it won the 24 Hours of Le Mans, also scooping third, fourth and fifth places on its debut in 1995.
  • The next roadcar project was with German manufacturer Mercedes-Benz, and saw the successful build of the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, which became the best-selling carbon-based car ever.
  • Since its launch in 2010, McLaren Automotive has developed into a world-class road car manufacturer, successfully developing and building the 12C and the 12C Spider high performance sports cars. Both models exploit our unparalleled understanding of carbon fiber and electronic driver systems to create a groundbreaking product of unequalled weight, strength, performance and drivability.
  • In a return to our sportscar roots, the debut of the 12C GT3 was an unqualified success, scoring 19 victories on its competitive debut in 2012. In September, as Vodafone McLaren Mercedes crossed the flag to win in Monza, McLaren’s GT cars also took top spot at races in British, French and Spanish championships – an incredible achievement.
  • Fittingly, this year, McLaren Automotive stands poised to open its 50th global dealership ahead of the worldwide launch of the P1™ – our newest model and a machine that’s set to rewrite the definition of the modern supercar.
  • Away from the track, McLaren leads the world in the application of Formula 1 technology and expertise to other industries. McLaren Applied Technologies helped British cyclists, rowers, sailors and canoeists win 15 gold medals last summer. We worked alongside Specialized to design Mark Cavendish’s world championship-winning S-Works Venge bicycle. Working with Birmingham Children’s hospital, we have improved the monitoring of sick children in intensive care. McLaren has also designed systems to help the Bay Area Rapid Transit railway in San Francisco to run more efficiently and to reduce the CO2 emissions from plane movements at airports.

It’s all a long way from that small south London lock-up back in 1963. But Bruce wouldn’t wish for us to merely look backwards without looking forwards, too.

Accordingly, echoes of our past will reverberate throughout a series of unique events and celebrations to be held across our anniversary year.

From the McLaren 50 logos we’ll proudly sport on our team shirts, through our specially commissioned heritage video features, to the launch of our new MP4-28 Formula 1 car with Jenson Button and Sergio Perez on January 31st, every lap, every corner, every mile and every road we take will be an opportunity to revel in McLaren’s present while recalling our 50-year past.

Ron Dennis CBE, executive chairman, McLaren Group and McLaren Automotive, said: “McLaren’s history is long and storied, but McLaren’s legacy is harder to define – and that’s because it’s still being vividly written every day by the dedicated men and women who work at the McLaren Technology Centre.

“Bruce McLaren wrote the beginning of the story, and the legend is going to continue for many years to come. I’m only a chapter, not the book, and I want other people to come in and write their own chapters as time goes by.

“This is a book that’s still being written, and that, perhaps, is the greatest legacy of McLaren.”

Please join us via www.mclaren.com to share the path of this journey. It’ll be fun and it’ll be fast.

Somewhere up there, we hope Bruce is smiling down on us, still gunning that throttle…

Andretti criticizes Toronto doubleheader  Andretti Autosport Owner Michael Andretti feels the new doubleheader format slated for Toronto's IndyCar event in July has the "potential to be hugely taxing on everyone involved, from drivers to tire changers, not to mention his team owner’s wallet,” according to Jeff Pappone of the GLOBE & MAIL.

Andretti said, “Definitely going to be a challenge no question about it. It’s putting a big, big demand on the drivers, in my opinion, and the teams in a lot of ways, the guys that go over the (pit) wall and stuff. So, I can’t say I’m a huge fan of it.” More ...

Audi to compete with two R18 e-tron quattro cars at Sebring
Audi R-18 e-tron
March 16, 2013 will mark the end of an era as the world’s highest-caliber sports cars are running at the tradition-steeped Sebring 12 Hours for the last time. Before the Le Mans prototypes of the LMP1 class are no longer permitted at this event from 2014 on, Audi is coming full circle in Florida. In 1999, the first LMP sports car of the brand celebrated its debut on the former airfield - and now two prototypes emblazoned with the four rings will arguably be competing there for the last time.

"We’re in for a very emotional race weekend on which we’ll be taking the fans along on a journey into our past," says Head of Audi Motorsport Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich. "Sebring is where Audi’s sports car era that has been so successful began. We expect that with two current hybrid models we’ll be battling for overall victory at the 12-hour race for the last time this year. At the same time, on the fringes of the race, the fans can look forward to seeing four other race cars and several race drivers who made history at Sebring with Audi." More ...

Alonso takes double win on ice
Alonso's car control was impressive
The sky lit up with fireworks to salute the double win for Fernando Alonso on the ice lake at Campiglio at the end of a go-kart race between the Scuderia Ferrari drivers and the Ducati Team riders. The event also featured the appearance of a Ferrari FF in the role of Safety Car. Starting alongside his teammate Felipe Massa, Alonso soon found himself at the back of the pack after a spin, but he fought his way up through the field to take the win in the first leg.

He won the second leg too, in a race where the grid was based on the reverse order of the previous race result. It took the Spaniard just a handful of laps to work his way up into the lead, thus finishing first overall, ahead of Massa and Giancarlo Fisichella.

Earlier in the day, the Ferrari men took part in the traditional ski race, where winner in the drivers’ category was Giancarlo Fisichella who finished ahead of Felipe and Dudu Massa. The curtain came down on another unforgettable Wrooom event with a farewell party.

Risi Ferrari returns to American Le Mans Series

North America’s most successful Ferrari GT team, Risi Competizione, is returning to competition after a hiatus in 2012.  The Houston, Texas-based team will enter one Ferrari 458 Italia GT in the GT class of the 2013 American Le Mans Series.

LVMS opening superspeedway for NASCAR testing March 7  Las Vegas Motor Speedway has set aside one day for NASCAR Sprint Cup teams to test at the 1.5-mile superspeedway in preparation for the Kobalt Tools 400 on Thursday, March 7. The test session will be free and open to the public. NASCAR's announcement last week that it would allow all NASCAR Sprint Cup racing organizations to have four tests (not including Daytona) prompted speedway officials to open up the dates on the speedway's calendar.

"Before the testing ban was implemented, every major race team used Las Vegas as a key test heading into the season," said LVMS president Chris Powell. "There are a lot of tracks very similar to Las Vegas, so between the favorable January weather and the amount of data that can be collected by testing here, we hope many of the teams will choose to test in Las Vegas prior to the start of the season." NASCAR prohibited testing at tracks hosting Sprint Cup events following the 2008 season. Up until 2008, NASCAR test sessions at LVMS routinely drew 30 drivers or more for the two-day test sessions. MIAMI, FL – January 15, 2013 – 2012 Trans Am, Champion Simon Gregg returns to defend his championship title against familiar series regulars like Amy Ruman and Tony Ave, the 2011 Trans Am Series Champion. Other entrants are returning for a full season as well as new teams and drivers competing for the first time.

NASCAR using new laser device for inspection  Along with the development of the Gen-6 race car has been the development of the inspection process. The newest development now in place is the use of a laser device which measures "40 different positions". The device, while similar to a process used in the Formula One series, is massive steps ahead. "There is no other system like this used in any other form of racing," exclaimed John Darby, Managing Director of Competition and the Director of Sprint Cup Series. The race teams have known of the impending inspection change for close to six months. The media, and those who will visit the garage area during the races are getting a first look.  See more and a video of the inspection process at RPM2Night

Q&A with Robin Pemberton on Cup Car testing  NASCAR’s vice president of competition, Robin Pemberton, took some time during the recent test at Daytona to address some of the issues.

Q. Two hundred miles per hour, is that OK for Speedweeks? If it gets over that significantly, is that problematic for you guys?

Pemberton: No. We're in the ballpark. We know the teams will go back and they'll work, they'll bring a little bit better this, better that. So we feel comfortable with that. The race track is coming to us a little bit. Speeds will fluctuate a lot. They'll be better on new tires. It will drop off as it goes. But we're right in the ballpark. We don't foresee any changes. The formalization of those terms was made known to the teams late Wednesday night in a technical bulletin that was distributed by Dallara. Speed.com

Carbon Fiber hoods and decklids in short supply
Trevor Bayne
Teams are scrambling as they try to build cars for the 2013 season, with the words “hood” and “decklid” making crew chiefs cringe.

NASCAR decided late last year that it would switch to carbon fiber hoods and decklids for the new car. Each manufacturer is producing its hoods through a vendor (it is considered a piece that must come from the manufacturer) while NASCAR decided that all decklids — the only piece of the bodies that are the same for each manufacturer — must come from the same source. Panther Racing co-owner seeks Super Bowl title game berth
Jim Harbaugh
As a co-owner and founding partner of Panther Racing, Jim Harbaugh has come close to winning the Indianapolis 500 with the team's four second-place finishes in the past five years. On Jan. 20, the San Francisco 49ers head coach will take his team into Atlanta for a showdown with the Falcons in hopes of getting his first chance at a Super Bowl victory.

It marks the second consecutive season Harbaugh has led the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game, where last year they missed a Super Bowl berth in a 20-17 loss to the New York Giants.

Harbaugh, who met team co-owner John Barnes during his playing days with the Indianapolis Colts while on a visit to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, is a lifelong IndyCar racing fan. After helping form the team Harbaugh worked on the pit crew during IndyCar Series races and was an integral member of the team in its early years. More ...

"We’re still dialing it in. You hear some teams say, ‘give us more down force,’ and other teams saying, ‘take off more.’ All I know is every oval we had last year was a handful, which is how it should be. Dakar Stage 12: Status quo  On a 12th special stage bike category leader Cyril Despres picked up his 4th stage victory on the Dakar and his first since 2011. In the general standings, Despres and Faria are solidly in the first two places ahead of “Chaleco” Lopez. The situation is almost identical in the car category, where Stephane Peterhansel is focused on protecting his lead. Despite a small scare after grinding to a halt in the dunes, the Frenchman has a comfortable lead in the general on completion of the special won by Nani Roma.

Despres and Faria control the general, Verhoeven takes advantage… Cyril Despres, third to start the day's special, decided to protect his team-mate Ruben Faria against the attacks of Chaleco Lopez who is always a threat on home soil. As a result, the general standings leader preferred to hold back a little and leave opening the tracks to his rivals, less skilled in navigation. The outcome was a more moderate pace to the race. This strategy paid off perfectly, because at the finishing line, Ruben Faria, tenth to start today, having quickly caught up with the stage leaders, achieved the second best time of the day, 1'38 behind Frans Verhoeven. The Dutchman, 12th to start, took advantage of clear tracks to really hit the gas, picking up his first victory on the Dakar 2013. Behind him, in spite of a painful shoulder following yesterday's fall, Spaniard Joan Barreda put in the day's 3rd best time, 16” in front of Alain Duclos, an excellent 4th on his Sherco. More ...

Speaking at Ferrari's Wrooom media event at Madonna di Campiglio in Italy on Wednesday, team principal Stefano Domenicali reckoned having two top talents like Alonso and Vettel would not necessarily be a good thing. More ...

Massa resurgence 'won't shake Alonso'  Ferrari has no concerns that Felipe Massa's resurgent form in Formula 1 will create tension with Fernando Alonso.

Massa's form contributed to Ferrari taking the bold decision to deliberately hand him a grid penalty at the United States Grand Prix to try and help move Alonso on to the cleaner side of the grid.

If Massa can carry his strong performances into 2013, then Ferrari could find itself facing similar tough strategic calls. But this does not concern its team principal Stefano Domenicali. More ...
