Germany to spend billions incentivizing electric car expansion
Whereas the USA government is not requiring charging stations be abundantly available like handicap parking (i.e. everywhere) Germany is expanding government installed fast-charging stations

Among European nations, Germany is one of the least active when it comes to policies promoting electric cars.

Even as the country's powerful auto industry has turned more attention to plug-in cars, government support for them has been largely limited to political speeches.

But now German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel apparently wants to put the government's money where its mouth is.

State officials approve Long Beach Grand Prix after compromise among business owners, race organizers
Long Beach Acquarium
Long Beach Aquarium
The fact that the Toyota Grand Prix will roar through Long Beach streets in April for the 42nd time is no surprise, but it took some long discussions, negotiations and compromises between city officials, the Grand Prix and the Aquarium of the Pacific to get approval from the California Coastal Commission to run the event this year.

Aquarium President and CEO Jerry Schubel, a longtime critic of the race's negative impact on the aquarium, told the commission last week that having to close the aquarium for the three race days, April 15-17 this year, results in a loss of about $300,000 annually.

Deep-learning supercomputers bring autonomous cars closer to reality
Driverless technology is developing at such a fast pace that self-driving cars are likely to hit the streets well before 2020.

The big carmakers already have most of what they need: adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping technology, collision avoidance and automatic lane changing. Armed with video cameras, radar and lidar (laser) sensing equipment, the automobile of the future is morphing into a peculiar beast.

And there’s new technology to make it smarter. At this month’s CES technology show in Las Vegas, chipmaker Nvidia launched the Drive PX 2 in-vehicle artificial intelligence platform for driverless operation.

Has NASCAR abandoned its core fanbase?
NASCAR attendance is down, but still strong
NASCAR attendance is down, but still strong
NASCAR has spent two decades trying to attract the casual fan, but have they permanently damaged their primary base in the process?

I wake up Saturday morning to find out here and everywhere about Tony Stewart confronting a fan at the Chili Bowl. All these stories come around to the same point, does it hurt the sport? The national sports media will say its a black eye having one of its top stars confronting a fan, that racers taking each other out on the track is an embarrassment to the sport. Yet when the Bengals and Steelers play the confrontations are just intensity and drive for the sport.

When NASCAR went through its explosive growth of the 90’s and early this century it was driven with large personality drivers and action on the track. Those things drove the excitement of its core fans, which helped attract a whole new audience to NASCAR races. The sport was on fire, a new network, FOX, had transformational coverage and spurred on the new fans with advertising during the almighty NFL season.

Formula 1's bosses are once again considering the possibility of bringing back mid-race refuelling to Formula 1 in the near future, FIA President Jean Todt has confirmed.

Last summer, bosses agreed to revive refuelling – banned from 2010 – as part of a major rules shake-up for the 2017 season, but the plan was quickly dropped after negative feedback.

However, Todt has revealed that it is now back on the agenda, brushing aside previous fears, and says it will be discussed during a meeting of the sport's Strategy Group in Geneva on Monday.

"We [will] re-address: is it right not to have refuelling?" Todt told Reuters.

Is the future of motorsports bleak?
A reader writes, Dear AR1, I read with interest your latest article that paints a fairly bleak picture for motorsports as a 'sport' unless we plan for it now. I think you are right. I know I won't pay a dime to watch a silent car race around a track controlled by a computer. The sport I love may soon be over. Dennis Solomon

Dear Dennis, We already saw a drop off in attendance when F1 cars, IndyCar and sportscars went to V6 engines muffled by turbochargers and other hybrid technologies.  Once they go completely silent and cars are all driverless, we're afraid driving will no longer be considered a sport and it will be lights out for motorsports unless we do something now. Picking up his fourth career preliminary night feature win, Bryan Clauson led non-stop in Friday's Vacuworx Global Qualifying Night to set the stage for Saturday's finale of the 30th annual Lucas Oil Chili Bowl Nationals presented by General Tire.

"My Golden Driller is lonely, I need to get him a friend," commented Clauson in his postrace interview. "I certainly feel like we have a car capable of winning just watching the first few nights. I wasn't quite as confident going into tonight. I felt like earlier in the week, we needed to get better. I told that to Rusty [Kunz]. We went 12th in the Race of Champions and that's a pretty good gauge."
