U.S. regulator closes Tesla death probe; no evidence of defects WASHINGTON -- U.S. regulators said on Thursday they found no evidence of any defects in Tesla electric cars after investigating the death of a man whose Model S collided with a truck while he was using its Autopilot system, the first known fatality involving semi-autonomous driving software.
The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said in a report it will not seek a vehicle recall after conducting a six-month investigation. The crash drew enormous attention and raised questions about the safety of systems that can perform driving tasks for long stretches with little or no human intervention.

Tony Stewart talked about racing Le Mans, Rolex 24 this year
Tony Stewart said Wednesday that he had discussions about driving in both the Rolex 24 at Daytona and the 24 Hours of Le Mans this year, but both deals failed to materialize.
Still, Stewart told FOXSports.com that he could compete in more than 80 races this season, mostly in sprint cars and late models, although if the right opportunity came up, he'd be open to running sports cars, too.
"I had some interesting conversations about running Le Mans and running the Rolex and both of those opportunities in a three-day period fell through," said Stewart. "And both of them were a second car in an organization that they decided they weren't going to run a second car.

From the initial design through to final production, the process of creating and constructing a new Formula One car is a hugely complex task. And this year, more than most, the mission is even more involved. With 2017’s cars undergoing a radical rethink there are fewer elements than normal that can crossover from previous designs to the new generation of quicker, more aggressive looking F1 machines.
George Russell Joins Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport Junior Driver Program
2016 proved a breakthrough year for the Mercedes-AMG Petronas Motorsport Junior Program. Pascal Wehrlein shone in his first Formula One season with Manor Racing, posting a string of impressive qualifying performances to reach Q2 five times - in addition to clinching only the second ever points scoring finish for the team at the Austrian Grand Prix. Esteban Ocon joined Pascal at Manor from the Belgian Grand Prix through the remainder of the year - showing his class to adapt quickly from his first experience of tin-top racing in the DTM to a half-season in an F1 cockpit.
Jean Argetsinger hosts racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart at the opening of the International Motor Racing Research Center in Watkins Glen, N.Y., in June 1999. Argetsinger, who died Monday, was a founder of the IMRRC
Jean Argetsinger, the matriarch of early American road racing and a leader in the creation of the International Motor Racing Research Center, died Monday, Jan. 16.
Argetsinger was a true partner to her late husband, Cameron R. Argetsinger, who is credited with the re-birth of road racing in the United States after World War II. In establishing Watkins Glen as one of the most important racing venues in the world, Jean Argetsinger was at the forefront in hospitality, publicity and community involvement.
Jean was predeceased by Cameron in 2008. She died at her home in Burdett, N.Y. She was 97.
Calling hours will be Friday, Jan. 20, from 3-6 p.m. at Vedder & Scott Funeral Home, Montour Falls, N.Y. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Mary’s of the Lake Catholic Church in Watkins Glen at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 21.
Argetsinger was a founder of the IMRRC. She served on the IMRRC Governing Council from its inception.
"Jean Argetsinger and I collaborated on so many motorsports and other community projects through the years," John Saunders, president of the International Speedway Corp., said Wednesday.
"Perhaps our most rewarding was the creation and development of a lasting legacy to recognize the 50th anniversary of racing at the Glen in 1998, the International Motor Racing Research Center. Nearly 20 years later, IMRRC excels as a global repository of motorsports history for generations to experience," Saunders said.

IndyCars won't have a 'Halo' anytime soon (Update)
IndyCar has no plans to implement a Halo device anytime soon. They think they want a windscreen but that will make the cars look hideous. Of course IndyCar has run the hideous Dallara for years and only now, in 2018 are they going to attempt to make it look better with a new bodykit, only to ruin it with a windscreen.
UPDATE "I think IndyCar, from the stuff I've seen, is going in a different direction, probably more of a screen implementation with some pretty trick materials," Scott Dixon told Motorsport.com.
"I think 2018 is kind of the goal right now, and they were talking about possibly running simulations at the end of '17 to see how it works. I know that they're gearing up to try.
"I think there's areas where safety can be achieved quite quickly, and then there's areas that take a lot more thought. It's easy to apply things but not totally understand the consequences of what could happen in different scenarios.
"Something that's going to push a pretty large safety item forward has to be managed quite well and understood fully before it can just be thrown out there."
Stewart happy with Ford. Of course he is, they gave him big $$ to switch
The move from Chevrolet to Ford during the offseason was more than just an undertaking of putting new body panels on the cars for Stewart-Haas Racing. As part of the switch, SHR now solely relies on building its own chassis (the car frame) instead of getting chassis from Hendrick Motorsports. That change by itself meant adding people to the payroll and a lot more work to get ready for 2017. Team co-owner Tony Stewart seems pleased with how his team has converted to a new fleet of cars.
Speaking at the Ford Performance racing support center, Stewart said Wednesday he feels confident his team has been organized well enough to make the switch without losing a beat. SHR doesn't build engines. It will move from Hendrick engines to Ford supplier Roush Yates Engines. Stewart said he felt the transition so far was smoother than he thought it would be when the team made the decision to change, a decision it did not take lightly considering Stewart's long relationship with General Motors and the quality cars and engines SHR had in winning the 2011 title with Stewart and the 2014 title with Kevin Harvick.

These latest lawsuits are unrelated to a previous class action suit brought against FCA and Cummins over NOx emissions in 2007 to 2012 Ram models.

Hyundai, Kia plan $3.1 billion U.S. investment, consider new plant
The elite rich Libtards can't stand this turnaround before Trump is even in office. They want America to outsource jobs overseas to slave labor countries and put Americans out of work so they can line their pockets with more profits
Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp. said they will spend $3.1 billion in the U.S. in the next five years, joining other vehicle manufacturers in announcing investment plans amid threats from President-elect Donald Trump of higher levies on auto imports from Mexico.
The planned U.S. investment by South Korea’s two largest automakers is nearly 50 percent more than the $2.1 billion they spent in the previous five-year period, Hyundai Motor President Chung Jin-haeng told reporters in Seoul on Tuesday. The group is considering building a new factory in the U.S. and may produce Hyundai’s upscale Genesis vehicles and a U.S.-specific SUV in the country, said the executive, who also oversees the strategic planning for Kia.

NC lawmakers seek permanent race car exemption from EPA anti-pollution standards
NASCAR plans to keep it's signature sound forever - no electric cars for them
After a scare last year among auto racing fans that the federal Environmental Protection Agency might enforce a new anti-pollution regulation affecting the industry, some North Carolina Republicans in Congress want a new law to protect the sport. Western North Carolina congressman U.S. Rep. Patrick McHenry filed a bill this week that would permanently block the EPA from regulating modified engines frequently used in amateur car racing.
McHenry's proposed legislation would amend the Clean Air Act to make race cars exempt from federal emissions standards on vehicles.

AR1.com has said for 20 years that Bill France Jr. and Bernie Ecclestone played Tony George like a fiddle and got him to break up CART and destroy IndyCar racing
1995 IndyCar champion and '97 Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve has said that the media and fan attention that followed Nigel Mansell from Formula 1 to CART Indy car racing in 1993 "annoyed" Bernie Ecclestone.
Speaking on stage at Autosport International in the Birmingham, UK, Villeneuve reminisced about his switch from Japanese Formula 3 racing to Formula Atlantic in America in 1993, and said initially he thought he might remain in U.S. open-wheel racing because it was booming.
However, he believes that Formula 1 leader Bernie Ecclestone played a role in Tony George splitting from CART Indy car to form the rival Indy Racing League. CART went bankrupt and its assets were bought by Champ Car, which finally reunified with the IRL to form IndyCar in 2008.
Villeneuve, who finished third in Atlantics in '93, before graduating to Indy cars in '94, and winning the Indy 500 and CART title in '95, said: "At that point I was thinking it would be great to make it to F1, but perhaps the rest of my career would be in the States. Remember that's when Nigel Mansell went to Indy car, and Indy car was starting to be bigger and bigger and bigger, and the viewership was starting to get super-strong.
Revised PWC Points Structure for 2017 Pirelli World Challenge has revised the points structure for both the drivers’ and teams’ championships, as part of its integration with USAC as the championship’s new sanctioning body.
The sprint race championship has eliminated the SCCA-based points system in favor of a more simplified format, awarding the top-20 finishers with points, ranging from 25 points for a win, 23 for 2nd, 21 for 3rd, and decreasing to 1 point for 20th position.
Bonus points for pole position and fastest lap in Race 1 in each class will also remain, but at a single point each, instead of the previous 7 points.
