Formula 1 tire supplier Pirelli has been granted an extra wet-tire test ahead of the 2017 season, to assist its preparations, with the Ferrari-owned Fiorano set to stage it.

Several drivers questioned the performance of Pirelli's Full Wet compound following rain-hit races last season, most notably Ferrari pair Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen.

Pirelli's Motorsport Director, Paul Hembery, recently told GPUpdate.net that the company has been working hard on its Wet tire, amid the switch to a much wider profile for 2017.

You can spend a hefty amount of cash in a given month simply for the privilege of driving to and from work. Liberty Media has confirmed the appointment of Ross Brawn as Managing Director, Motor Sports, and Sean Bratches as Managing Director, Commercial Operations, following its acquisition of Formula 1.

Liberty confirmed it had completed its acquisition of Formula 1 on Monday, with Chase Carey installed as chief executive officer and Bernie Ecclestone made chairman emeritus.

Brawn, who enjoyed a successful career as technical chief with Benetton, Ferrari and his own eponymous outfit, has now been appointed to play a key role within Liberty's new structure, after acting as a consultant across the past few months.

Hooters has joined 12-time NASCAR Cup Series champions Hendrick Motorsports as a primary sponsor of driver Chase Elliott and the #24 Chevrolet SS team beginning in 2017. A casual dining establishment with a deep history in NASCAR, Hooters will be a two-race primary sponsor and full-season associate sponsor of the #24 team in both 2017 and 2018.

The Hooters Chevrolet SS will debut May 7 at Talladega Superspeedway and appear again during the Chase for the NASCAR Cup Nov. 12 at Phoenix International Raceway. Hooters has been a primary sponsor in more than 150 Cup-level races, notably as the full-season sponsor of 1992 premier series champion Alan Kulwicki.

WALLER, Texas -- Will Phillips joins AJ Foyt's ABC Supply Racing team as the team's technical director, replacing Don Halliday, who retired at the end of 2016.

Phillips will also be the race engineer of the No. 14 ABC Supply Chevrolet piloted by Carlos Munoz. Daniele Cucchiaroni returns as the race engineer of the team's other entry, the No. 4 ABC Supply Chevrolet with driver Conor Daly.

Hiring Phillips from KW Motorsport is the final piece to the puzzle which has been put in place as the team overhauls its operation in the off season. In addition to new drivers, the switch to Chevrolet power and aero kits, the AJ Foyt Racing has hired new personnel for the No. 4 ABC Supply Chevrolet team which will be based in Speedway, Ind. for most of the race season.

Seven years ago, Tequila Patron ESM arrived on the sports car racing scene in the American Le Mans Series, boasting its bold green and black liveries. Since 2010, the Florida based team has claimed victory nine times, earning an additional twenty podiums in professional competition. Today, Tequila Patron ESM has returned to full-time competition in the United States, entering two Nissan Onroak DPis in the Prototype class of the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship.

The 2017 race season begins this week at Daytona International Speedway for the 55th annual Rolex 24 at Daytona, where Tequila Patron ESM will debut its new liveries for the two machines. Both cars will be donned in a striking black, lime green, and chrome livery, complete with the Tequila Patron bottles, representing the eight year partnership between the premium tequila brand and Extreme Speed Motorsports. The bold green and chrome lines start at the nose of the Nissan machines, dynamically flowing with each piece of bodywork.

Formula 1 should scrap the use of blue flags in grands prix and restrict the awarding of penalties as that will improve the racing, according to Derek Warwick.

After lengthy discussions in driver briefings last year, the FIA clarified the use of blue flags following complaints faster cars were getting baulked in traffic.

There has also been a growing feeling there are too many penalties being handed out for on-track incidents.

Fox televising 23 hours of Rolex 24

Fox Sports, using a multitude of platforms including the broadcast network, will air 23 hours of the Rolex 24 At Daytona.

Fox originally planned to live stream the entire race on its Fox Sports Go app, but later decided to run most of the race on its two sports networks, Fox Sports 1 and FS2.

The FSG app is available in the Apple App Store and Google's Play Store.

The missing hour of TV coverage will be from 10 to 11 p.m. Saturday when Fox Sports 2 will carry post-fight coverage from an UFC event. FS1 has a Supercross race during that time slot.

Sebastian Vettel wins Nations Cup for Team Germany (6th Update)

With some confusion, the following drivers advanced to the finals: Kyle and Kurt Busch (NASCAR USA) and Sebastian Vettel (Germany) advanced to the finals, which was surprising because Kurt Busch definitely jumped the start in his final race against Alexander Rossi but was not penalized.

Nations Cup Champion Sebastian Vettel for Germany after defeating both Busch brothers is successive races. Vettel drove all races for Team Germany as Pascal Wehrlein was not allowed to race today on doctors orders after yesterday's accident. We will have a full report later. Next up is USA vs The World.

Brad Keselowski Racing Announces Driver Lineup NASCAR Truck Series
CONCORD, N.C. (Sunday, January 22) - Brad Keselowski Racing (BKR) announced its team lineup details for the 2017 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCWTS) season at the National Motorsports Press Association annual convention in Concord, N.C. 

Austin Cindric will pilot the No. 19 Draw-Tite Ford F-150 and Chase Briscoe, who was recently named as the first driver in the Ford Performance development program, joins the organization as the driver of the No. 29 Cooper Standard Ford F-150. Cindric and Briscoe will both compete on a full-time basis as they pursue the NCWTS championship for BKR. Doug Randolph, who has been atop the pit box at BKR since 2012, will serve as crew chief for Cindric, while two-time NCWTS championship-winning crew chief Mike Hillman Jr. will lead the effort for Briscoe.

Following his accident during yesterday’s Race Of Champions at Miami’s Marlins Park, German driver Pascal Wehrlein will take no part in today’s ROC Nations Cup as a precautionary measure on doctors' advice.

Wehrlein said: "I'm very sorry to withdraw from today’s ROC Nations Cup. I’d really like to race again and I feel fine, but the doctors have advised me to rest so of course I will take their advice. It’s no more than mild discomfort but my real priority for the coming year is my Formula 1 season. So while I'm sad to be missing out on all the action, I send my best wishes to my team-mate Sebastian Vettel and the rest of the competitors here in Miami and I wish them another exciting day’s racing."

NASCAR to announce 2017 changes on Monday
Monday at 6:00pm/et in the Charlotte Convention Center, NASCAR officials will announce format changes for the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series. Those changes could include such things as a new points system, awarding points for leading race segments, new qualifying procedures and perhaps running the Chase race at Charlotte Motor Speedway on the track's infield circuit.

Hyundai Motorsport’s chances of securing a maiden Rallye Monte-Carlo victory were cruelly ended on Saturday afternoon when Thierry Neuville, who had been in imperious form, damaged his car during the final stage of the day.
 
Neuville had further increased his impressive lead of the rally to 50 seconds heading into SS13 (Bayons-Breziers) but his Hyundai i20 Coupe WRC ran a bit wide at the exit of a slow corner. A resultant impact caused suspension damage that required Neuville and co-driver Nicolas Gilsoul to carry out lengthy repairs.

With a large and enthusiastic crowd in attendance, the 2017 Pioneer Pole Buildings Motorsports Race Car & Trade Show opened at 2:00 p.m., for the first day of a three-day run in the Greater Philadelphia Expo Center.

Stewart to drive Little 500 at Anderson
Tony Stewart said he was retiring from NASCAR, not from all forms of racing.

The two-time Brickyard 400 winner from Columbus native is scheduled to drive in the Pay Less Little 500 sprint car race at Anderson Motor Speedway on May 27, the night before the Indianapolis 500, according to a news release from Hoffman Auto Racing.

Marcus Ericsson has welcomed new team-mate Pascal Wehrlein to Sauber and believes that the "highly-rated" Mercedes protege will boost the Swiss squad.

Ericsson has been paired with Felipe Nasr at Sauber since the start of 2015 but the Brazilian has been replaced by Wehrlein, who competed for fellow backmarkers Manor last year.

Ericsson praised the caliber of Wehrlein and reckons he will have a positive influence on the outfit. 

"I think it's great news for me and Sauber," Ericsson told the official F1 website.

As reported earlier, NHTSA is closing its investigation of the fatal accident on Tesla Autopilot without finding any defect or issuing any recall. We now have access to the full report and there are some interesting key findings about the crash and Tesla's Autopilot in general.

For example, the agency reviewed data that indicates Tesla's crash rate was reduced by 40% after the Autopilot's Autosteer feature was introduced.

Autosteer is the main feature of the Autopilot system and it enables the vehicle to steer itself in certain conditions.

Stewart-Haas Racing will field four cars during the '17 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season, but the team has "not announced an anchor sponsor for the majority of races" for Clint Bowyer, who replaces Tony Stewart in the No. 14, according to Bob Pockrass of ESPN.com. Bowyer recently "stood in front of a Mobil 1-branded car" during an event at the Ford Performance Technical Center even though Mobil "just has a few races with Bowyer next season." Stewart: "We're still working, still looking for sponsors for the 14 car so feel free to bring whatever you've got." Pockrass notes Bowyer's car would "run without sponsorship, if necessary, or with the Haas Automation logos of team co-owner Gene Haas on the car." Even with Ford support, Stewart said that "sponsorship is vital." ESPN.com

Owen Wilson to serve as Grand Marshal for 59th Daytona 500
Owen Wilson will be the Grand Marshal for the 59th annual Daytona 500 Feb. 26 on FOX.

Wilson is also serving as the voice of the animated character Lightning McQueen in the upcoming movie “Cars 3” movie, so this is definitely a win-win situation for all parties.

A Detroit Grand Prix tradition of “Free Prix Day” on Friday of race weekend that began 35 years ago will continue in 2017 thanks to Comerica Bank. Chevrolet Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix officials announced today that Comerica Bank will return as the sponsor of Free Prix Day on Friday, June 2 as Detroit opens its doors to everyone for the first day of its three-day motorsports festival.

All fans will be able to enter the Raceway at Belle Isle Park and tour the paddock area, known as the “locker room of motorsports,” on Comerica Bank Free Prix Day at no cost.  This marks the fifth consecutive year that Comerica Bank has provided fans the opportunity to experience the Grand Prix venue free of charge on Friday of race weekend with complimentary access to Belle Isle Park. It also extends the Free Prix Day tradition that began with the first Grand Prix on the streets of Detroit back in 1982.

IMSA has confirmed the Balance of Performance for next weekend’s Rolex 24 at Daytona, with minimal changes having been made to the new-for-2017 Prototype class and wholesale adjustments for the GT Daytona contenders since the Roar Before the 24.

The sanctioning body issued the BoP to teams on Thursday evening, more than a day after a draft version was sent between manufacturers internally prior to official approval.

LAS VEGAS -- Volkswagen will offer the first embedded application of Amazon's Alexa voice service in a vehicle, as the growing focus on network-connected appliances and other home devices inspires collaborations between automakers and technical service providers.

While other automakers including Ford, BMW and Hyundai are introducing Alexa, their applications work only with via a smartphone app connected to the car's infotainment system.

VW says it is the first to have directly integrated the feature into the car's own system without an intermediary as interface.
