Montoya retakes the lead in the 01 Ganassi BMW
The seven-hour mark in the Rolex 24 at Daytona saw a fierce battle for the overall lead in the race’s 51st running. Juan Pablo Montoya regained the race lead in his No. 01 TELMEX/Target Chip Ganassi Racing BMW/Riley by getting around Starworks’ Ryan Dalziel in a run past the start-finish line with 17 hours left.

Dalziel in the No. 2 Ford/Riley had been holding off Montoya for a number of laps after the race’s third full-course caution. The duo led a group of seven Daytona Prototypes that were within 9.819 seconds. Max Angelelli ran third for Velocity Motorsports and the No. 10 Corvette DP. More ...

Open Wheel Racing's plaque  As Formula One and IndyCar adapt to the global economic crisis, really good drivers sometimes get replaced by a ‘pay driver,’ as funding in the sport becomes ever more crucial.

‘Pay drivers’ are hardly a new phenomenon in the sport. Three times World Champion Niki Lauda took out a bank loan to secure his first drives in F1.

The Pay Driver term is more frequently attributed to drivers who lack ability but bring huge funding to a team, i.e. they buy their ride to live the jet-set life. The reality is that most pay drivers do possess the ability required to drive at the top level and be competitive.  But the perception, and sometimes the reality is that a more talented driver may be overlooked. Panoz ready for ALMS and Grand-Am merger
Don Panoz
The merger of Grand-Am Road Racing and the American Le Mans Series will bring new drivers and classes to the Rolex 24 At Daytona next year.

Those changes are still a ways out, but astute race fans might notice a new face at Daytona International Speedway this year. Entrepreneur and ALMS founder Don Panoz — a former-competitor-turned-cozy-partner of Grand-Am — will be a Rolex regular starting this year.

"I came (to the Rolex) in '98 and (entered a car as an owner), but I hadn't been back since because we (at ALMS) were competitors (with Grand-Am)," said Panoz, who founded a company that invented the nicotine patch. "But, now that the merger has progressed, I'll be here more." More ...

Danica Danica Danica  UPDATE An AP article all about Danica Danica Danica.  NASCAR is fast moving from being a sport where the best athletes/drivers get all the PR, and into a Hollywood gossip mill. "Thanks a lot, Ricky," Clint Bowyer said sarcastically. "I'm down here enjoying the sunny weather in Daytona, at my first 24-hour race, and what do I get asked? About Ricky and Danica."

When NASCAR kicks off its 2013 racing season at Daytona International Speedway next month, Dan Pierce and a group of friends will get together to watch the race as they have every year since 1995.

But Pierce, UNC Asheville professor and NASCAR historian, worries some of the magic might be gone from the track. He said he and his friends spend less time with motorsports than they used to.

“I don’t sense the passion about it anymore,” said Pierce.  And Danica, Danica, Danica is a big part of that. More ...

Hamilton doesn't expect Mercedes to be a winner on Day 1
Lewis Hamilton at Brackley
Lewis Hamilton says that he will need to be ‘patient and realistic’ at Mercedes this season, and not to expect too much too soon.

Hamilton, who visited the Mercedes factory in Brackley this week, says, "I think it’s important to be patient and realistic," he said. "You’ve got to remember that the way F1 has gone over the years, with the car evolving each year and how long it takes to find one second throughout the season - and knowing that Mercedes were 1.1 seconds behind in Brazil - that it’s going to be very difficult for them to gain two seconds in three months. CSX teams up with Front Row Motorsports  CSX Transportation is teaming up with Front Row Motorsports and driver David Ragan to remind NASCAR fans to "Play it Safe" around railroad tracks. CSX will serve as a primary sponsor of Ragan's No. 34 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series entry at Richmond International Raceway on April 27, as a major associate in five additional events - Daytona (Feb. 24), Michigan (June 16), Watkins Glen (Aug. 11), Chicagoland (Sept. 15) and Talladega (Oct. 20) - and be featured on Ragan's No. 34 car throughout the entire 2013 season.

Ragan, a seasoned safety messaging spokesperson, is happy to be pairing up with CSX at Front Row Motorsports. "It's important for all of us to be safe around railroad crossings and tracks. Far too many incidents occur each year simply because people don't recognize the danger associated with taking unnecessary changes around railroads," Ragan said. Hennessey Venom GT breaks acceleration record  The world's fastest production car to reach 300 kilometers per hour from a standing start was dreamed and built just outside Houston.

The Hennessey Venom GT set a Guinness World Record for reaching 300 kph (186 mph) in 13.63 seconds, besting the Swedish-made Koenigsegg Agera R by almost a full second. To understand the gravity of those numbers, consider that the average family sedan needs seven or eight seconds to hit 60 mph. A Porsche 911 Turbo S, one of the world's hardest-accelerating sports cars save for a $2 million Bugatti Veyron, reaches 127 mph in about 11 seconds. More ...

ISC reports dip in still huge profits  International Speedway Corp. saw a year-over-year decline in both its 2012 fourth-quarter and full-year earnings and revenues, but the narrowing of the revenue decline for its core business operations to less than 1 percent has company officials encouraged.

IndyCar race director reviews 2013 IndyCar rules changes - Q and A
Barfield
IndyCar race director Beaux Barfield spoke to Curt Cavin and his radio show co-host, Kevin Lee, about some of the changes coming to the sport in 2013. The following is a transcript from WFNI-1070 AM in Indianapolis.

Question: You've tweaked qualifying on road courses and short ovals. Will those changes be for all such events, with a shorter first segment [10 minutes instead of 15]?

Barfield: Yes. It's a little bit different for the doubleheaders and I'd have to get out my rulebook to actually consult that but ultimately for the Fast Six qualifying format which will apply to the doubleheaders on Friday and all other road and street courses, we made those changes to the timing to put a premium on track time. There's obviously times that we waved the green flag to start a session and it might be three or four minutes before the first car even goes on track. So there's obviously some strategy to going later so the cars are out there when the track is rubbered up and there's the most grip and they can go the fastest. So we decided to back-fill that and chop the first five minutes out. Once we wave the green flag all cars should be heading straight out on track. More ...

F1 costs Victorians $35m each year  UPDATE #3 Mark Fogarty reported Victoria's annual fee to stage the race "is in the middle range" of what F1 races cost governments and promoters around the world. Dale Jr. unsponsored for 13 races  NASCAR's most popular driver will enter the 2013 season with 13 unsponsored races. But team owner Rick Hendrick doesn't seem concerned that Dale Earnhardt Jr.'s #88 has open inventory. Hendrick said there has been plenty of interest from sponsors and that he is more concerned with finding a match that will work beyond 2013.

"We've got a lot of good opportunities," Hendrick said during Wednesday's stop of the Sprint Media Tour. "The way we're positioned, the car is covered until the end of the summer. I don't have a deadline for a deal. I'm not looking at a timeline. I'm looking at the right deal." Hendrick said he was close on two or three deals, but "we haven't put any line in the sand."

It was announced last year that National Guard would be on Earnhardt's car for 20 races in 2013. Diet Mountain Dew was contracted for 16 races in 2012 with PepsiCo having the sponsorship rights for 20 races. ESPN

Pirelli promises a "revolution" in F1 tires
Pirelli is hosting a press conference at its base in Milan this morning, laying out plans for the 2013 season and it is claiming a half second a lap improvement in performance over 2012.

And the company president said that Pirelli intends to renew the contract with F1 after it expires in December and that he is “confident” it will happen.

In Formula 1 it promises “a revolution” with tires featuring new softer compounds and constructions which will suffer more thermal degradation than last years’, forcing the teams to make two stops as a minimum and “increasing the overtaking opportunities and so helping to provide an even better show”.

Pirelli claims that the softer compounds will mean that performance is improved by 0.5s per lap, while from a strategy point of view the gap between the two compounds selected for each round will be at least half a second, in order to widen the race strategy options and speed differentials at various stages of the race. Bruton Smith Wants End to Start-and-Park  Bruton Smith, chairman of Speedway Motorsports, Inc. told media attending the NASCAR Sprint Media Tour hosted by Charlotte Motor Speedway that he would like to see an end to start-and-park racing, a term that refers to race teams that run only a few laps of a race in order to collect a portion of the purse, but pull off the track before causing too much wear and tear on their equipment, thereby saving on the expense of running a full race.

"Start-and-park should not be a part of what we do," he said. "I think it's derogatory toward our sport. I'm going to try my best and I hope you'll join me to see if NASCAR can do something about this. It certainly isn't adding anything to our sport, and it certainly takes away."

He then asked media in the room to use their influence to put an end to the practice. Smith's other appeal was to encourage NASCAR to reduce the top speeds of the race cars, which he argued would make the racing safer but also create more excitement for the fans because the drivers will make moves with more confidence.

Proposed IndyCar schedule spot on  Dear Brian at AR1.com, I was reading your article regarding the Indy Car schedule and couldn’t agree more. I don’t know how Indy Car expects to build the brand,  if they drop off the face of the earth for 6 months of the year. That’s an eternity in our short attention span society. As long time Indy car/ motorsports fan, one such group that figured this out has been the AMA supercross/ motocross series over the last several years. Speed/NBC & CBS have picked up several events over the last four years or so. But its promoter group was much quicker to respond to schedule changes to help promote the series. The series starts the first weekend in January and ends the first week of September.  Hopefully you have some clout with the folks at Indy Car, and they would take your tentative schedule under advisement for next season.
