We’ve reached the quarter pole of the 2014 Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. The caution is currently out with a tire carcass in the infield section. Memo Rojas currently leads in the #01 Ganassi Ford, but will be pitting soon, and likely making way for NASCAR driver Jamie McMurray.

Max Angelleli has been turning fast times in the Wayne Taylor Racing #10 Corvette and currently sits second.  IndyCar driver Justin Wilson is third in the #60 Michael Shank Racing with Curb/Agajanian Ford Eco Boost

Grand marshal David Hobbs lauds union of sports car series
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- "No downside."

That's how former driver David Hobbs, grand marshal for the 52nd Rolex 24 At Daytona, views the merger that produced the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.

"I think now that we've got the two factions together again in sports car racing, we could be entering another golden era of racing here; I really do," Hobbs said of the merger that united the GRAND-AM Rolex Series and the American Le Mans Series under the IMSA sanction. "As you can see, there's a heck of a lot of cars out there and a heck of a lot of drivers who obviously want to take part in it.

"So I really think it heralds a new era in sports car racing, which it needs. It really does, because sports car racing was languishing a little bit, and I think it will be great for it."

Rolex 24 Hour 2.5 Standings
We’re closing in on the end of hour 2 in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. Joao Barbosa has cycled back to the lead in the #5 Acton Express Corvette. Again, Barbosa is on a different pit sequence, and we expect him to pit soon.  When the off-sequence cars do pit, Scott Dixon will once again inherit the lead.

While Dixon has been strong, the #01 driven by Scott Pruett has struggled. On his most recent pit stop, Pruett left the pits before the Ganassi team had secured the left rear wheel on the car. One of the crewmen was hit and brought to the ground but uninjured. Pruett served a stop and hold penalty for the unsafe release.

Rolex 24 Hour 1 Update
We’re approaching the end of the first hour in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. By virtue of an early out-of-sequence pit stop Joao Barbosa leads in the #5 Action Express Racing Corvette. Brendon Hartley in the #78 Starworks Riley Dinan is about 8 seconds behind Barbosa, about a half-second ahead of Ozz Negri in the #60 Michael Shank Racing with Curb/Agajanian Riley DP Ford EcoBoost. Like Barbosa, Hartley and Negri pitted early.

When the leaders pit, we expect 2013 IndyCar Series Champion Scott Dixon to inherit the lead in the #02 Chip Ganassi Racing Riley DP Ford EcoBoost. Dixon was able to jump early race leader Alex Gurney by pitting a lap later than the #99 machine.

Confident Montezemolo says "Now is time to win"
Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo says he has confidence his team can end their six-year wait for a championship in 2014.

“I’m confident because we have a strong team,” said Montezemolo following the launch of the team’s new car, the F14 T. “They think that we have all the ingredients to be a success.”

Kimi Raikkonen has replaced Felipe Massa in the team’s line-up this year and Montezemolo said Ferrari have “two very strong drivers” for the new season.

Ferrari unveils shovel nose 2014 car
(GMM)  Ferrari on Saturday became the next team to unveil its 2014 car, launching the fan-named F14-T online.

The characteristically red car, but with extra black in its livery for the new V6-powered season, features an unique take on the FIA's new aerodynamic limitations, and is a departure from the 'anteater' noses seen so far.

Ferrari's nose is a dramatic shape, wide and low, and it will be driven by Fernando Alonso as usual, but also team returnee and 2007 world champion, Kimi Raikkonen.

And with former five-time Ferrari title winner Michael Schumacher currently seriously ill in hospital, Spaniard Alonso drew a parallel with the great German's breakthrough in 2000, and his own fifth consecutive season in red.

"I'm in the fifth year now so hopefully I can repeat some of the success that he had," said Alonso. See AR1.com feature article for photos and more.

Dodge not planning return to NASCAR anytime soon
It's the question all Dodge stock-car fans want to know: When will the manufacturer return to NASCAR? Not in 2014, that's for sure. While Dodge continues to discuss stock-car racing, according to Ralph Gilles, president and CEO of SRT Brand and Motorsports, Chrysler Group LLC, "the timing isn't right." But Gilles is well aware that stock-car enthusiasts miss the Dodge brand in NASCAR's garages” so never say never. "We haven't forgotten about NASCAR," Gilles told FOX Sports on Friday.

"We have a lot of pressure on our capital right now. The Dodge brand has a new chief (Timothy Kuniskis, president and CEO of Dodge Brand), right? He's an enthusiast. He owns a Charger himself, it's his daily drive. He has an older one and a new one. He gets it. He understands. But timing is everything. To get back in the sport is not an insignificant investment. It's something that we've said no to. This year is out of the question, but the future, anything could happen. The fans want us back, so we'll see." FoxSports

Barfield working as race strategist at Rolex 24
“Hey, what are you doing here?” Alex Tagliani addresses Beaux Barfield as he passes by in the Daytona International Speedway paddock.

More than a dozen IndyCar Series and Mazda Road to Indy drivers are competing in the 52nd Rolex 24 At Daytona, and the IndyCar Series race director also is involved as the race strategist for the NGT Motorsport team in the GTD class.

“It’s a great opportunity to get back on the competitor side,” he said. “It’s already made me better in terms of officiating because it’s allowed me, in this environment, to look at the rules from a completely different perspective. That balance of getting back on the competitor side, staying current and relevant will help my officiating.”

Fans decide 2014 Ferrari F1 car name
The car with which Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen will fly the Scuderia Ferrari flag in this year’s Formula 1 World Championship will be called the F14 T. Prancing Horse fans from around the globe chose the name in a ballot that’s run on line from 15 January to midnight last night.

“It’s nice to know the name of the car has been chosen by our fans,” Stefano Domenicali told www.ferrari.com. “The amazing number of votes shows just how popular Ferrari has always been and this will be, as always, a further impetus for us to do well this year!”

There was a total of 1,123,741 votes and the winning margin was just 19,104 or 1.7%, after a very close fight with F166 Turbo. The other three names on the list fared less well: third was F14 Scuderia (18.8%), followed by F14 Maranello (12.3%) and F616 (4.8%.)

Rolex 24 GTD class pole winner, others penalized (Update) UPDATE
Christopher Haase is smiling again
After winning the GTD pole in Thursdays qualifying in the No. 48 Paul Miller Racing Audi R8 LMS, Christopher Haases time was disallowed in post-qualifying inspection. After review by IMSA supervisory officials, however, the post-qualifying infraction penalty was rescinded on Friday morning, putting the Audi back on the pole.

"We were not as much concerned about the pole as our interpretation of the rule, team owner Paul Miller said. Qualifying position is not very important in a 24-hour race. We were concerned about the rule that was in dispute, and were very upset with the way it was initially handled. Westbrook Leads Final Rolex 24 Practice
Westbrook, driving the blue No. 90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette DP
Local race fans will have no problem finding a car to cheer for in Saturdays 52nd Rolex 24 At Daytona. After qualifying second on Thursday, Spirit of Daytona Racing driver Richard Westbrook was fastest in Fridays final practice before the debut of the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship and the Tequila Patrn North American Endurance Cup.

Westbrook ran a lap of 1:39.256 (129.121 mph) in the No. 90 Corvette DP to lead the one-hour session. He will be joined racing for the Daytona Beach-based team by Michael Valiante and Mike Rockenfeller for Saturdays race that begins at 2:10 p.m. ET.

Its nice knowing that we have the pace to be contenders under our right foot, Westbrook said. Weve had a real nice build up for the Rolex 24. The car is fast and comfortable to drive. This is the first time Ive been at the Rolex 24 in a DP where I can say I have a chance to fight for the win. Weve got the pace. Now, we have to stay out of trouble and give ourselves a chance. Well give it a go.

Sage Karam aiming for drive in Ganassi IndyCar
Indy Lights champion Sage Karam
Indy Lights champion Sage Karam isn't sure where this weekend's Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona will lead him, but he's willing and ready to find out.

Karam has joined Chip Ganassi Racing for the season-opening race of the Tudor United SportsCar Championship at Daytona International Speedway with no guarantees that he'll ever drive another Chip Ganassi car. But he might, and that's good enough for him.

“We're talking about doing some more races,” said Karam, who is scheduled to hop in the No. 01 Telcel-sponsored car led by sports car regulars Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas with help from NASCAR driver Jamie McMurray. “We might do the Indy 500 or maybe a couple of other races. We'll see.”

Jamie McMurray
Jamie McMurray has a knack for coming up big in big-time events. So he has that going for him this weekend in the Rolex 24 At Daytona, as he tries to become only the third driver to win that event and the Daytona 500.

The other two: Mario Andretti and A.J. Foyt.

"Couple good names," McMurray said before adding that he also had a chance to establish a record that would be his alone.

"Nobody's won those two races plus the Brickyard 400."

Lotus E22 with forked nose
(GMM)  The world of F1 is now in full 2014 mode, as two more new cars saw the light of day on Friday.

Force India and Williams had already released images of their new 'anteater'-nosed single seaters, and now the 'nostril'-nosed silver and black McLaren MP4-29 has been launched online.

And, perhaps in retaliation for apparently poaching its boss Eric Boullier, Lotus rained on McLaren's launch parade by simultaneously releasing the first photo of its new E22, which will not be officially revealed until Bahrain next month.

Double File Restarts Coming To ARCA
Officials from the Automobile Racing Club of America have announced the adoption of a revised “double file restart” procedure for the ARCA Racing Series presented by Menards 2014 season. The new rule will be in effect starting with the Lucas Oil 200 presented by MAVTV American Real at Daytona International Speedway Feb. 15.

Here’s how it will work: Following a caution period and pitting cycle, series officials will verify the running order and position cars in proper order. When the starter gives the “one lap to go,” signal, cars will line up in two columns for all restarts in the “double file” format after they cross the start/finish line, unless otherwise directed by ARCA officials. The leader will have the choice of which lane he or she will restart. Previously, ARCA’s double file restart placed lead-lap cars in the outside lane and all lap-down cars in the inside lane with no lane choice for the leader.
