Fan Force United Asks Fans To Choose Livery
Having recently announced their return to the Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires series for 2014 with Mazda Road To Indy veteran Scott Anderson, Fan Force United aims to begin reconnecting to their fan base with a fun, fan-focused outreach.

With the first of a number of fan-focused initiatives that Fan Force United will be implementing for the 2014 racing season, the team is giving racing fans the opportunity to vote on three different proposed liveries for their 2014 Indy Lights car.  To participate is as easy as 1-2-3.  Simply go to www.fanforceunited.com, scroll to the bottom of the page, and indicate if you “love” or “hate” the three liveries.  This crowd-sourced team decision was introduced during the Rolex 24 at Daytona, which is typically considered to be the kick-off of the racing season.

Tony Stewart cleared to return at Daytona (Update) UPDATE STEWART ON HIS RECOVERY – “It just keeps getting better and better each week. I got a great therapist here in Charlotte. He’s working me out hard, not making it easy by any means, but it’s not supposed to be easy. It’s supposed to be difficult, it’s supposed to be challenging, but I’m really, really happy with the progress. I feel like it, and he feels like that we’re over the hard part – over the hump – and that doesn’t mean the intensity level goes down with the therapy and the work we do, but at the same time, we’re making great progress. We’ll judge it Sunday to Sunday and if you had to put it on a chart – it’s a straight line going uphill. There are days I feel better than others; and then there are some days that I can’t explain that I don’t feel as good. Over the average of the week, it just keeps getting better.”

Former F1 Team Boss Eddie Jordan's $40m Super Yacht Nears Completion
Dock where yacht is being built
Former F1 team boss Eddie Jordan will soon have the keys to a brand new $40m super yacht.

Jordan has been waiting two years for the Sunseeker vessel after construction started in Poole, Dorset, in 2012.

The vessel is so named because it measures 155 feet, the largest vessel Sunseeker has ever constructed.

On board the luxury four-deck yacht will be a nightclub, a lower deck day-room, and there will be a 'beach club' stern and panoramic viewing platforms down the side, giving guests a front-row seat for the Grand Prix at Monaco.

NASCAR drivers shut out in Rolex 24
After more than 2,400 miles and 23 1/2 hours of racing, the most prestigious North American sports car race came down to eight minutes and a final five-lap sprint. The first race of the unified United SportsCar Championship-the NASCAR-owned and IMSA-sanctioned series born from the merger between American Le Mans and Grand-AM - ended with a NASCAR flair. A late, full-course caution swallowed Joao Barbosa's 13-seccond lead and gave Max Angelelli a last-ditch chance to win the Rolex 24 at Daytona. Barbosa never gave him a chance, pulling away on the restart with 8:23 to race Sunday to give Action Express Racing its second victory in four years. Co-driver Sebastien Bourdais won the Rolex for the first time, while Christian Fittipaldi won for the second time.

Ford was shut out in its debut of its new EcoBoost engine. The #01 car of Chip Ganassi Racing team [including Jamie McMurray] wasn't able to defend its race win because of a series of problems that plagued the car starting very early in the race. Ganassi's #02 entry [including Kyle Larson] was taken out of contention when it developed a flat rear tire while Scott Dixon was running second with roughly five hours remaining. IndyCar drivers dominated the event. Associated Press

NASCAR team owner prepares for murky F1 approval process
Gene Haas
Gene Haas has written a $5,000 check to the FIA for an "expression of interest" in a Formula One team, and another $125,000 installment is due Feb. 10.

That's virtually all Haas is certain about as his bid to join the global motor sports series navigates a murky approval process and seemed to take a hit last week when Formula One chieftain Bernie Ecclestone doubted its likelihood.

"He said he didn't think we would qualify," Haas said Monday during the NASCAR Sprint Media Tour, whose opening stop featured the Sprint Cup team co-owned by Haas and Tony Stewart. "That's a little bit of a letdown. I respect the man, and it's a very difficult sport, the highest echelon of racing in the world. They want teams that compete and stay for 10 years.

Carpenter earns Pat O'Connor Award
Ed and Heather celebrating Carpenter's 2013 Indianapolis 500 pole run
IndyCar Series team owner/driver Ed Carpenter received the Pat O'Connor Award from the Hoosier Auto Racing Fans during its annual banquet Jan. 26.

Presented for the first time in 1968, the Pat O'Connor Award is voted on by the executive board of HARF and presented to a Midwest driver who "lives up to the spirit and the ideals on which this award is based." When the criteria for this award was being formed, HARF members said they would look for such things as devotion, cooperation and constant effort to make auto racing the sport of which they are all proud.

O'Connor, born in North Vernon, Ind., suffered fatal injuries in the 1958 Indianapolis 500 Mile Race. He was 29 years old. O'Connor started from the pole the previous May at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The 1956 USAC champion was inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 1995.

IndyCar News and Notes

Justin Wilson returns to DCR for 2014
Below is an IndyCar News and Notes from AR1's Brian Carroccio.

Had it been Andretti, Penske or Ganassi my response would be different.

But presuming the reports and rumors are true, and Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing did attempt to buy out Justin Wilson’s contract from Dale Coyne Racing, Coyne (presuming DC actually returned Bobby Rahal’s phone calls) was absolutely right to say no. Wilson, of course, announced last week, he would be back with DCR in 2014.

Nissan unveils revolutionary ZEOD petrol engine for LeMans
Per liter the engine is more powerful than an F1 engine
Nissan will not only break new ground with the unique electric power plant aboard the Nissan ZEOD RC at Le Mans this year, but the accompanying internal combustion engine is set to revolutionize standards of performance and efficiency.

The Nissan ZEOD RC will become the first entry at Le Mans to complete a lap of the Circuit de la Sarthe under nothing but electric power in June. A single lap of each stint (a fuel “stint” lasts approximately one hour) will be electric powered, then the new Nissan DIG-T R 1.5 liter three-cylinder turbo engine will take over.

The incredibly small engine weighs only 40 kilograms (88 pounds) but produces an astonishing 400 horsepower (pictured right with Nismo President, Shoichi Miyatani). The base engine is only 500mm tall x 400mm long x 200mm wide (19.68” x 15.74” x 7.78”). While the engine is technically too heavy to take as carry-on luggage on a plane – it would easily fit inside the luggage guides seen at major airports around the world.

Football still king, auto racing 4th (Update) UPDATE Pro football is the most popular sport in America for at least the 30th straight year. That's according to a survey taken this month by the Harris Poll, which has been asking adult fans, ages 18 and over, about their favorite sport since 1985. In 2014, 35 percent of fans call the NFL their favorite sport, followed by Major League Baseball (14 percent), college football (11 percent), auto racing (7 percent), the NBA (6 percent), the NHL (5 percent) and college basketball (3 percent). In 1985, the first year the poll was taken, the NFL bested MLB by just one percentage point (24 to 23 percent), but since then interest in baseball has fallen while the NFL has experienced a huge rise in popularity. Nine percent fewer fans call baseball their favorite sport over the 30-year span, the biggest drop of any sport. The polling numbers suggest that the sport hasn't been able to recover from a popularity standpoint from 1994, when a strike forced the cancellation of the World Series. One other significant drop was in professional golf. Throughout Tiger Woods' pro career, which began in 1996, no less four percent of the U.S. adult population called golf their favorite sport. But since 2010, the first year after Woods' extramarital affair scandal, only two percent of Americans have called it their favorite sport. ESPN.com

The decision has been made to reverse the decision by the race director, rescind the penalty against the No. 555 Level 5 Motorsports Ferrari 458 Italia team, and reinstate drivers Scott Tucker, Bill Sweedler, Townsend Bell, Jeff Segal and Alessandro Pier Giuidi as the GT Daytona class winners.

We regret the confusion following the race, and appreciate the patience by our fans, drivers, teams and the media so we could properly review and subsequently report this decision.

Bourdais keeps IndyCar driver win streak alive at Daytona
Sebastien Bourdais
Sebastien Bourdais has won endurance races  such as the Spa 24 Hours, sports car races like the inaugural Brickyard Grand Prix, V8 Supercar races, and 31 Indy car races.

Adding the Rolex 24 At Daytona overall victory to his hall of fame resume Jan. 26 was personally satisfying.

Bourdais continued the streak of IndyCar Series drivers to win the twice-around-the-clock race to four consecutive years. Bourdais, who turns 35 on Feb. 28, teamed with Joao Barbosa and Christian Fittipaldi as the Action Express Racing Corvette Prototype held off a restart challenge by the Wayne Taylor Racing car following a full-course caution with eight minutes left to win by 1.461 seconds.

Rolex 24 Hour 23: Action Express Corvette leads Taylor Corvette
We’re coming upon the final hour of the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. Sebastien Bourdais continues to lead in the #5 Action Express Corvette. Jordan Taylor is second in the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette about 11 seconds back, but has been losing ground to Bourdais during the recent stint. John Martin remains third in the #9 Action Express Corvette in third-place, as the Corvette 1-2-3 continues.

Scott Dixon has taken over in the #02 Chip Ganassi Racing Ford EcoBoost, but remains one lap behind in fourth place. Also, the sister Ganassi #01 has taken another trip to the garage, in what has been a trouble-filled race for the defending winners. The #01 is 45 laps down.

Rolex 24, Hour 22: Bourdais and Action Express Out Front
We’re nearing the 22-hour mark in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. A caution has come out after the #7 PC driven by Kyle Marcelli caught fire on the backstretch. Marcelli is out of the car, and seems to be fine.

By virtue of a Jordan Taylor pit stop, Sebastien Bourdais has inherited the lead driving #5 Action Express. Taylor is second in the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette 46 seconds behind Bourdais. John Martin has the #9 Action Express Corvette in third-place, as the Corvette 1-2-3 continues.

Tony Kanaan, driver of the #02 Chip Ganassi Racing Ford EcoBoost, remains one lap behind in fourth place. We imagine Scott Dixon will take over soon, as Kanaan has been at the while about three stints now. Remember, Dixon was quite fast in the early going, and if the #02 can get its lap back, Dixon will be a factor in the closing stages

Rolex 24 Hour 21: #10 Still in Front
We’ve hit the 21-hour mark in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. Jordan Taylor has taken over for brother Ricky in the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette, and currently leads second-place John Martin in the #9 Action Express Corvette by less than a second.

Shortly after getting in the #10, the younger Taylor had something of a nerve-wracking moment as he went off course to avoid a spinning PC car in front of him. The Wayne Taylor team called him, cleaned the grill and sent him back out. It is expected that Max Angelleli will take over for Jordan for the final stint.

Rolex 24 Hour 20: Battle for lead with 4 hours to go
The No. 4 Corvette is chasing down the leading GTLM Porsche 911 RSR
Courtesy of IMSA
We’ve hit the 20-hour mark in the Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona. The class of the field currently is Ricky Taylor in the #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette. Taylor holds a 14-second advantage over John Martin in the #9 Action Express Corvette.  Martin’s teammate Christian Fittipaldi is less than a second behind in the #5 sister car.

Overall, it’s probably safe to say, the race for the overall win is down to six cars. The three mentioned above are the only cars on the lead lap. Three prototypes are currently one lap off the pace. Tony Kanaan is currently piloting the #02 Chip Ganassi Racing Ford in fourth place. The #6  Muscle Milk Nissan Oreca is quietly putting together a strong race, and sits fifth with Alexander Brundle currently behind the wheel. Michael Valiante has the #90 Spirit of Daytona Corvette in sixth.

With his teammates now officially retired from the event, Porsche North America’s Richard Lietz continues to lead in GTLM in the No. 911 Porsche 911 RSR. He has a 10.7-second lead over Corvette Racing’s Oliver Gavin in the No. 4 Corvette C7R, with BMW Team RLL teammates Graham Rahal (No. 56) and Andy Priaulx (No. 55) third and fourth, one lap down.

Rolex 24 Hour 18: Only two cars left on lead lap
The No. 9 Action Express Corvette leads with 6-hours to go

Racing resumed following the 12th caution period at 7:32 a.m. As racing resumed, the second place No. 5 Action Express Corvette DP of Joao Barbosa was called for a stop-plus-70-second penalty for avoidable contact.

Twenty minutes later, the second-place No. 02 Target/Telcel Ford EcoBoost/Riley of Scott Dixon cut a right-rear tire in the infield, resulting in a slow trip for the two miles back to the pits, dropping the car to fifth.
