IndyCar drivers head to big game as Verizon guests
Living in Indianapolis for eight years and watching the Indianapolis Colts, Simon Pagenaud has been schooled in the rudiments of American football.

Though the native of France doesn't have an opinion about "deflategate" or wouldn't dare diagram a play for third-and-goal from the 7-yard line, he's among the Verizon IndyCar Series drivers who will be guests of Verizon this weekend at Super Bowl XLIX at University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.

Team Penske teammates Helio Castroneves, Juan Pablo Montoya and Will Power, the reigning series champion, will also make the trip to watch the New England Patriots battle the Seattle Seahawks.

McLaren launches silver MP4-30 (Update) UPDATE
Side View
F1 technical adviser Dominic Harlow has launched many an F1 car in his time as an engineer for Jordan, Force India and Williams in his long career and here he runs the rule over the new McLaren, based on the photos issued today

The car features a 'Platypus' nose according to the new regulations, with the front wing pillars set very well back from the tip and choosing to make use of the surfaces rather than try to minimize the overhang.

The front suspension gives a visual impression of a long wheelbase but is fairly conventional. There are no separate roll hoop inlets, but instead a horizontal splitter sending air to the compressor and also to a cooler of some kind.

The radiator inlets are then probably slightly larger to compensate and the sculpted sidepod suggests careful management of the internal flows beneath. Nevertheless what was shown was likely to have been in quite a low cooling configuration.

Richard Petty: #9 is Chase Elliott's if he wants it
His father Bill Elliott in the #9 in 1985
On Wednesday, NASCAR Sprint Cup team owner Richard Petty said he's not "emotionally attached" to #9, which Marcos Ambrose carried at Richard Petty Motorsports and which Sam Hornish Jr. will carry this year. "We inherited that number [when Petty bought the remnants of the Ray Evernham/George Gillette team]," Petty said. "It doesn't mean anything to me, but it does to the sponsors we'd already signed for this year. If the kid wants it next year, though, that's fine with us."

"The kid" he refers to is Chase Elliott. His famous father carried number 9 for most of his career, getting 38 of his 44 victories and his championship with it. "Awesome Bill" carried 17 other numbers during his Sprint Cup career, most notably 11 with Junior Johnson, 21 with the Wood brothers and 94 with the team he created and owned late in his career. Chase Elliott will run five Cup races this year in #25 for Hendrick Motorsports. Don't be surprised if that number is 9 when the 2016 season opens in Daytona Beach. AutoWeek

Video: Time to Make History: McLaren-Honda MP4-30
It's been 22 years since McLaren and Honda last raced together, forming a near-unbeatable partnership that dominated Formula 1 in the 1980s and '90s. The racing landscape may have changed immeasurably since the days of Alain Prost and Ayrton Senna, but there are still clear links that bind the two manufacturers together.

Take a close look at the brand-new MP4-30 chassis - the car that will contest the 2015 FIA Formula 1 World Championship - and discover how Honda and McLaren's racing DNA links this car to one of its most illustrious forebears, 1991's McLaren-Honda MP4/6.

KV Racing supports Barnhart appointment
KV Racing Technology issued the following statements regarding the naming of Vice President of Competition Brian Barnhart as INDYCAR Race Director.

Sebastien Bourdais, driver of the No. 11 Team MISTIC E-Cigs and Team HYDROXYCUT – KVSH Racing Chevrolet/Dallara/Firestone entry:

"Following Beaux Barfield's departure from INDYCAR's race control, I think everybody was wondering who would take over. Yesterday, it was announced that Brian Barnhart will be back and I have to say, in my opinion, that it makes perfect sense and is the right decision. First, Brian knows the INDYCAR organization very well, having held several positions over the years. Second, he has worked with and knows all the teams and drivers. Third, he has a tremendous amount of experience at race control having served as the Race Director in the past and as part of the three-steward's panel during the 2014 season. Finally, as I often said, the Race Director's position is the worst job in the series because no matter what decision you make someone will always think you are wrong. That being said, Brian is a very sensible person. He is easy to talk to and never afraid to accept blame if things go wrong, which makes it great to work under his command. For all of the reasons above, I fully support the decision to make Brian the Race Director and welcome his return!"

NASCAR Hall of Famer David Pearson recovering from a mild stroke
David Pearson after winning the famous 1976 Daytona 500 over Richard Petty

The family of David Pearson said the Hall of Famer driver is recovering well from a mild stroke.

A family release issued Wednesday through NASCAR's communications department said Pearson suffered the stroke Dec. 9 "but is doing great and well on the road to recovery."

"The stroke affected his left side somewhat, but he is able to walk slowly, and his arm continues to get better with maneuverability," the statement said. "He has great grip with his left hand, so we are very much encouraged.

"He continues to have therapy on both his leg and arm and progresses each day. Today, he is 80% to 85% back to normal, and we expect a full recovery soon. Thanks to the NASCAR family and all of his fans and friends and for their support and concern."

Pearson, 80, has 105 victories in NASCAR's premier series, ranking second to Richard Petty on the all-time win list. The three-time champion was inducted in the second class of the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2011.

1901: The race that changed the world (Correction)
A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, My name is Todd Barthel, I am the great grand-nephew of Oliver Barthel, and I'd like to bring to your attention an error in your article "1901, The Race That Changed the World" dated Feb. 13, 2001.

In it, you referred to Oliver Barthel as Oliver "Otto" Barthel, suggesting his nickname was "Otto".

That is, in fact, in error.  Oliver Barthel was the youngest of three brothers; Theodore EA Barthel (my great grandfather) born 1874, Otto F Barthel born 1876, and Oliver E Barthel born 1877.  He was never referred to as Otto, as that was his older brother.

As the article is 14 years old, there's no harm in the error.  I just felt that, for your edification, you would like to know. Todd Barthel

Wood Brothers and Ryan Blaney expand their schedule
Ryan Blaney
The Wood Brothers (#21 Ford) went searching for a driver for 2015 and found Ryan Blaney and are expanding their schedule with the 21-year-old winner in Xfinity and Camping World Truck Series. Wood Brothers say their goal has been last five years to develop young drivers and Ryan Blaney was obvious choice to replace Trevor Bayne after he moved to a full-time Cup ride. They really want to get to 100 wins in their 65th anniversary season.

Team co-owner Eddie Wood says they will run 12 races with Motorcraft on board and have tentatively added six races to the schedule, as part of working with Team Penske. Those six races will be Darlington, Bristol, Chicagoland, the fall Charlotte race, Kentucky and New Hampshire. Penske sponsors PPG, Snap-On, and SKF will sponsor the car in those races. Wood says that the team's partnership with Team Penske is similar to what it was with Roush Fenway Racing - Penske does the body and chassis work and shares engineering data. Wood says that the #22 NXS pit crew will pit the #21 on race days WSB Radio Blog

IndyCar: Barnhart named INDYCAR Race Director
Anton's boy, Brian Barnhart back in charge of race control as IndyCar slowly migrates back to the IRL
INDIANAPOLIS - INDYCAR announced today that Vice President of Competition Brian Barnhart has been named Race Director and will lead the Verizon IndyCar Series' three-steward Race Control system in 2015. Barnhart was a key member of the INDYCAR Race Control system implemented in 2014 that stipulates all in-race penalties are decided by a two-thirds vote among the respective stewards officiating each event.

"We believe that based on his extensive experience in Race Control, combined with the three-steward system, Brian Barnhart is a good fit as INDYCAR Race Director," said Derrick Walker, INDYCAR President of Competition and Operations.

"The process allows the Race Director to focus on running the race, without the double-duty of reviewing multiple replays and simultaneously trying to make a call. In terms of determining penalties our process defines that a majority vote amongst the three stewards is required, which ensures a jury-like process. Last year we found that this was a fair system when making difficult judgment calls."

IMS delays apron that would benefit IndyCar's arch-enemy
IMS to bring back the apron so IndyCar can have bad accidents again
Seldom has an eight-foot-wide stretch of asphalt been so anticipated and yet so delayed.

But as preparations build for this summer's NASCAR race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, track officials have decided another year must pass without the apron, the proposed racing room below the white boundary line in each corner.

The reason: NASCAR officials want time to study the effects of changes made to the track. The Brickyard 400 is July 27.

IMS had planned to begin apron installation June 9, the day after its vintage car weekend, but NASCAR thought that was too late.

"They asked if we could postpone (the project) so they could test it," IMS president Doug Boles said Tuesday. "We said, 'That makes sense; we understand that."

Franzoni Tops USF2000 Palm Beach Test
Italian Victor Franzoni resides in Brazil

The official 2015 season is now underway for the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, as a number of teams and drivers rolled off their trailers for an official test day on the road course at Palm Beach International Raceway on Sunday, January 25.  Brazilian Victor Franzoni may have only just confirmed his return to Afterburner Autosport squad last week, but the series sophomore looked as though he'd never left the seat of his car as he topped two of the three sessions run on the 2.21-mile circuit on Sunday.  Afterburner's focus for the test was simply to get Victor re-acclimated with his #17 entry, ahead of the Cooper Tire Winterfest that is set to kick off the pre-season at NOLA Motorsports Park and Barber Motorsports Park in late February.  The team ran through system checks and gave Franzoni the opportunity to the shake off the winter cobwebs.

NASCAR Media Tour: JGR News and Notes, Toyota Racing, Part 2
The JGR driver lineup
(Editor's note: Here is part 2 of the drivers from Joe Gibbs Racing meeting with the media earlier today. For part 1, see here.)

What will Carl Edwards bring to Joe Gibbs Racing?

"I think one thing it definitely does is brings a lot of resources to our race team.  Any time you can bring in a fourth sponsor and driver, you're bringing in extra revenue and that allows us to hire more people, spend more money on R&D and things like that that are really important for a team's success.  I think you've seen that in years past every time that Kyle (Busch) has come onto the team, and I've seen it with each Cup driver that's come in here, it brought a level of talent that's made everyone else raise the level of their game.  There's tracks that Carl (Edwards) is good at that none of the rest of us three are that good at, so we'll be picking his brain on those types of race tracks and it's going to work hand-in-hand, vice versa.  I think he's just going to be that extra element that puts our team in that tier you're talking about battling for a championship every year."

NASCAR Media Tour: JGR News and Notes -- Toyota Racing, Part 1
Joe Gibbs Racing will boast quite a formidable drivers' lineup in 2015
(Editor's note: Joe Gibbs Racing drivers Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Matt Kenseth and Carl Edwards met the media today in Charlotte. Here is the first part of the transcript)

KYLE BUSCH, No. 18 M&M's Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

How strange is the off-season without testing?

"This off-season has been a little bit strange without the on-track NASCAR-type testing that we're all accustomed to whether it's Charlotte or going to Vegas or doing a west coast swing-type thing or even going to Daytona for preseason testing.  Not being able to be in a car at all is different and the first time we get back in it will be practice for the Shootout here in a few weeks."

Brasilia opening race ticket sales brisk
Ticket sales for the inaugural Brasilia Indy 300 continue at a brisk pace, with five of the 10 grandstands at the Aut¢dromo Internacional Nelson Piquet circuit sold out for the March 8 Verizon IndyCar Series season opener.

Tony Kanaan, who this past weekend added a Rolex 24 At Daytona victory to his list of racing accomplishments in the U.S. and his native Brazil, said he's already counting the days until the No. 10 NTT DATA car hits the fresh pavement of the 3.403-mile, 12-turn circuit.

A major capital improvement project under the direction of Terracap - the state - and federally-owned district development agency of Brasilia – at the permanent road course that opened in 1974 includes reconfiguring some corners to increase the racing excitement for spectators and challenge for drivers. It is progressing as scheduled.

Kyle Busch tired of being confused with brother Kurt
Busch Brothers
Kyle Busch said Monday he has not gotten involved in his older brother's personal issues and is disappointed he has been mistaken for Kurt in coverage of assault allegations against the 2004 NASCAR champion. #41-Kurt Busch spent four days over the last two months in a Delaware courtroom as part of a hearing regarding an ex-girlfriend's request for a no-contact order. Patricia Driscoll alleged Busch assaulted her in September during an argument at Dover International Speedway.

"Haven't spoken to him, don't know nothing; trying to stay away from it all and let him handle his business," Kyle Busch said. But he's been dragged into it as the case drew national attention earlier this month when Kurt Busch testified he believes Driscoll is a trained assassin. In several instances, Kyle has been wrongly identified as his brother.

"I have worked together with (Hamilton Jr.) in the 1990s, and he is so much fun to work with," said team owner Roger Carter. Kyle Busch says Toyota teams are "idiots"
Kyle Busch calls Toyota team owners idiots
Kyle Busch admits he's frustrated that Toyota partners Joe Gibbs Racing and Michael Waltrip Racing do not work as closely together as other teams do.

Busch felt the same way after last year and says he hasn't seen any improvement between the teams with the season-opening Daytona 500 less than a month away.

"I'm very vocal about it because I feel like we're idiots by not continuing to work in the right direction in order to put our companies together and do the right things for Toyota and for all of us collectively," Busch said Monday during the NASCAR Sprint Cup media tour. "It just makes me mad every day they say that nothing has progressed.

IMSA's self-inflicted media wounds
The challenges in elevating the status of sports car racing in America are enormous. I've been around long enough to remember the 1970s when IMSA was bolstered by John Bishop's leadership, a small but largely solid staff, the support of Bill France Sr., and the terrific backing of R.J. Reynolds' sports marketing group and Camel's title sponsorship. There was some excellent racing and some good times, too.

I predicted the first year of the combined ALMS/Grand-Am series would be difficult and it certainly was. Whatever goodwill was created by unifying sports car racing quickly fell to self-inflicted wounds, including inept officiating and a variety of organizational errors. Season two of the Tudor watches (not even remotely bringing an RJR-esque effort to the task)-entitled series opened last weekend with the Rolex 24 at Daytona International Speedway, won by Scott Dixon, Kyle Larson, Tony Kanaan and Jamie McMurray.
