Newey sees Red Bull Racing falling further behind in 2016
Adrian Newey (R) and son Harrison
Adrian Newey (R) and son Harrison

Red Bull Racing’s mastermind behind the quadruple winning constructor and drivers’ titles is this weekend in India supporting his son Harrison who competes in the final race of the MRF Challenge. Adrian Newey stepped back from his frontline Formula One design duties in Milton Keynes to pursue ‘other projects’ from the beginning of 2015.

Newey believes Formula One has fundamentally changed since the introduction of the V6 hybrid turbo engines and the change means it is nigh on impossible for his Red Bull Racing team to compete at the front. He believes the proper balance between engine, chassis and driver contribution to performance has been lost in Formula One.

Rolex 24 Flashback: The Gathering of the Clans: Andretti vs. Unser in '91
1991 Rolex 24
The Andrettis, led by Michael Andretti (left), faced off against the Unsers, led by Al Unser Jr., in the 1991 Rolex 24.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Like many of the best ideas, this one came about in a bar.

But having a great idea and successfully pulling it off can be two very different things. Especially when the plan involves getting the foremost names from two great U.S. motorsport dynasties, the Andrettis and the Unsers, to race against each other in a sports car superteam at one of the world's biggest endurance races, the 1991 Rolex 24 at Daytona.
Yeah, good luck on that one…

The architect of this ambitious program was Jochen Dauer, racer, entrant and font of good ideas. (Just three years later, his Dauer Porsche 962 “road car” would win the 24 Hours of Le Mans in the hands of the Porsche factory.)

DeltaWing and DHX to shrink electric vehicle motors without compromising power

The DHX Falcon, at front, produces 80 hp and is equivalent to the typical automotive electric motor shown behind, yet is 75 percent less bulky (Credit: DHX Electric Machines)

DeltaWing Technology Group and DHX Electric Machines, both based in Georgia in the US, are collaborating to build small, lightweight electric motors for automotive applications. The companies claim their electric motors are 75 percent smaller than equivalent-output motors for automotive applications thanks to engineering improvements in heat management.

Much of the bulk of high-torque electric motors, such as those typically used in automotive applications for electrified vehicles, is in the heat management systems engineered into the motor casings, and efforts to reduce this bulk typically result in loss of torque output in heavier usage. DHX claims its design reduces bulk by up to 75 percent without losing thermal management efficiency, thus retaining the motor's expected output in heavy usage.

GM forms team for self-driving, electric cars
Self-driving electric cars are the future, make no mistake about it
Self-driving electric cars are the future, make no mistake about it. What becomes of motorsports when driving is something people no longer do?
General Motors said on Thursday it was creating a team to speed up development of self-driving and electric cars, as it moves to expand its line-up of such vehicles.

Doug Parks, GM's vice president for global product programs, was named vice president for autonomous technology and vehicle execution, as of Feb. 1.

Parks will oversee efforts to develop new electrical and battery systems and software for the vehicles, and report to Mark Reuss, head of global product development, GM said in a statement.

Parks has held several engineering and finance roles at the automaker since 1984. Prior to becoming vice president for global product programs in August 2012, he was executive director and group vehicle line executive for electric cars.

Autonomous Cars better than humans
The Tesla Model S autonomous car drives better than humans
The Tesla Model S autonomous car drives better than humans
Letting your Tesla drive you to work is not perfect, but it’s a lot more reliable than the guy in the car in front of you who’s updating his Facebook status and veering in-and-out of his lane.

After reading all of the hype about autonomous vehicle technology to come out of CES, the Detroit Auto Show, and even from the World Economic Forum in Davos, and having spent the last three months beta testing my Tesla’s autopilot feature on the morning commute through metropolitan New York and New Jersey, the above statement is most accurate summary I can offer about what the future of autonomous vehicle technology has in store for us.

Tesla Motors Confirms It's Developing Two 'Affordable' Electric Vehicles
Tesla Motors, hot off of beginning deliveries for its new Model X SUV, has now confirmed it’s working on not one, but two ‘affordable’ electric vehicles which it hopes to sell for around $30,000. Following the current Model S and Model X, Tesla plans to introduce a Model 3 and Model Y. S3XY.

Remember when Ford killed Tesla Motor’s CEO Elon Musk’s attempt at bringing 'S.E.X.' to the market by introducing a compact electric sedan slotted between the Model S and Model X to be called the Model E? Well he found a way around that, with all-but-confirmed reports that the “Model 3" will be unveiled this March, and it may not be the only new model to come from Tesla this year.

Hamlin's knee at 50%
UPDATE Denny Hamlin was featured on this weeks NASCAR teleconference and answered some questions, a few were about his knee injury, surgery and recovery:

Denny Hamlin
Denny Hamlin
Q. Saw you last week at the media tour, and you talked about the knee was probably only about 50%. What's the prognosis, and is it getting better this week?
DENNY HAMLIN: "Yeah, it really has, even in the last week. It's been quite a bit better. The biggest thing is the range of motion has not been very good, and it's kind of behind. But we're catching up to being on schedule here, and just in the last seven days, I think it's amazing how far we've gotten in rehab to getting this thing better. I'm very confident that in two weeks it's going to be a non-issue on track, and really for me it's more like when can I start running again. That's the biggest hurdle mentally that we fight through all this is not being able to do some of these activities that we use to kind of take racing off of our mind because once the racing season starts, any given Saturday I'm kind of looking for a golf course after practice is over to relax a little bit, and right now I'm not able to do any of that."
