How KERS will change Formula One in 2011 This year grand prix racing will feature the return of a controversial new technology, which in theory makes the cars more environmentally friendly. Many will no doubt report that KERS was banned in 2010 but this was not actually the case. FOTA Teams simply agreed not to use the systems, but they were still legal under the technical regulations.
Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems or KERS for short are devices used for converting some of the waste energy from the braking process into more useful types of energy which can then be used to give the cars a power boost. More ...

Star Mazda Alumni Win Rolex 24 With two dozen alumni of the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear among the competitors in the 49th annual Rolex 24 at Daytona, it's little wonder that when the smoke of battle cleared, the victors added another layer of luster to the gleaming reputation of Star Mazda as one of the premier driver training series in the world today – and a 'gateway' series to many forms of motorsports.
1999 Star Mazda champion Joey Hand and Graham Rahal, a graduate of the Star Mazda class of 2005, co-drove (along with Scott Pruett and Memo Rojas) the race winning the #01 Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates. In winning the 1999 championship Hand got a test with Team PTG in their ALMS sports car, which turned into a full-time ride with the factory team and sent him down the path of building a career at the top levels of endurance racing. The Audi R15 “plus plus” that will be fielded at the 12-hour race at Sebring – the season opener of the Intercontinental Le Mans Cup (ILMC) – completed a long run as well. CV Sports files lawsuit against IMS and IndyCar UPDATE In a story AR1.com reported back on January 28th, a Florida-based sports marketing firm that claims it is owed millions of dollars in commissions for landing Izod as the Indy Racing League’s title sponsor is suing the series.
Boca Raton-based CV Sports Marketing Inc. filed suit Thursday in Marion Superior Court, claiming breach of contract, unjust enrichment and defamation, as well as other charges.
The firm alleges that it is entitled to 10 percent of the revenue generated from the sponsorship agreement—fees that could be as high as $10 million based on CV Sports Marketing's estimate that the Izod deal is worth up to $100 million.

Rahal matches father's win 30 years later
 |
| The winning team | Graham Rahal’s association with Chip Ganassi Racing already is paying dividends.
Rahal, who will drive the No. 38 Service Central Chip Ganassi Racing entry in the IZOD IndyCar Series this season, co-drove the No. 01 TELMEX/Target Chip Ganassi Racing with Felix Sabates car to victory in the Rolex 24 At Daytona. It came 30 years after his father, Bobby, joined Brian Redman and Bob Garretson in Victory Lane.
"Most drivers who compete in this event, and there have been thousands, will never get the opportunity to win this race," Rahal said. "And to have the chance to win it, and to have that chance at 22 with a great team, this is pretty sweet. And to be my first race with Ganassi and really looking forward to the IndyCar schedule kicking off in only a month or two, there's no better way to win.”
The 1981 sports car endurance race was Bobby Rahal's breakthrough victory in a career marked by his 1986 Indianapolis 500 title and CART championships in 1986, '87 and '92. He had 24 open-wheel racing victories and 88 podium finishes. More ...

Senna next in line for Renault race drive (GMM) Bruno Senna insists he is first in line to take the wheel if Renault's regular race drivers run aground in 2011.
In the Valencia pitlane on Monday morning, the Lotus-sponsored team unveiled the R31 and also a plethora of drivers, including 'third' drivers Senna and Romain Grosjean and reserves Fairuz Fauzy, Ho-Pin Tung and Jan Charouz.
But it was Senna, whose late and legendary uncle Ayrton also drove in black and gold colors for the original Lotus team in the 80s, who claimed the high ground.
"If any of the other drivers happen to be poisoned or break a leg or something like that, then they may not know who's to blame but they know who is going to replace him," joked the 27-year-old, according to Reuters. More ...

Lotus dispute about 'money' - Lopez When in doubt, follow the money, a phrase you hear often here in AR1.com. The Lotus naming dispute is simply about money, Renault team owner Gerard Lopez said on Monday.
He was speaking at Valencia, where the newly Lotus-sponsored Renault revealed its 2011 car, mere hours after the entirely separate Team Lotus launched another car that will also carry the evocative brand name this season.
Group Lotus terminated Fernandes' naming license for 2011 and has teamed up with Renault, with a dispute to now be played out in the High Court as neither side is backing down.
Lopez, head of the Renault owner Genii Capital, accused Fernandes of sticking to his guns for no reason other than money. More ...

Honda Announces Consolidated 2010 Financial Results Despite the unfavorable currency effects due to the appreciation of the Japanese yen and a decrease in automobile sales in Japan, consolidated operating income for the fiscal third quarter (October 1, 2010 through December 31, 2010) was 125.6 billion yen primarily due to the recovery of automobile sales in North America and the expansion of motorcycle business in Asia. Consolidated operating profit for the fiscal nine months (April 1, 2010 through December 31, 2010) considerably increased compared to the same period last year, primarily due to increased profit in automobile business in Japan, North America and Asia as well as motorcycle business in Asia, offsetting the unfavorable currency effects due to the Japanese yen appreciation.

NASCAR now a buyer’s market for sponsors demanding more for their money Take a look under NASCAR’s hood and some sobering sponsorship trends emerge.
Major backers such as UPS and Aflac both have primary sponsor deals on cars expiring after the upcoming season (and that’s just at Roush Fenway Racing), TV audiences and speedway attendance continue to lag and younger fans are leaving in droves.
Even some of the recent gains in the garage leave question marks behind. As happy as everyone professed to be last fall when Hendrick Motorsports announced a three-year deal with the AARP Foundation to sponsor Jeff Gordon’s car beginning this season, it unintentionally reiterated the graying NASCAR fan base. The number of young men watching NASCAR – a key audience for the major sports leagues – has plunged in recent years, a problem discussed publicly in recent months by plenty of industry executives. Pairing the 39-year-old Gordon with a drive to end hunger for people 50 and 60 and older is admirable, but reinforces the growing reputation that NASCAR’s brief run as a hip sport ended long ago. Mercedes reveals photo of 2011 F1 car UPDATE A better photo is now shown below.
01/30/11
(GMM) Two days ahead of the rest of the world, Mercedes has revealed the first Photoshop rendering of their formula one car for 2011.
Mercedes released a photo showing the W02 with a very high and wide nose, a shinier silver livery and a reversion to a more conventional airbox.
The car will only be officially launched on Tuesday morning before it is tested for the first time as pre-season testing kicks off at Valencia.
"It has a shiny new silver paint, which really illuminates the beautiful shapes," said the German marque's motor sport vice-president Norbert Haug.
He said the goal is to race with the front-runners this season, and team boss Ross Brawn revealed that designers have been aggressive with the W02. More ...

Lorenzo will race with No. 1 A triumphant 2010 MotoGP racing season witnessed Yamaha Factory Racing Team rider Jorge Lorenzo charge to World Championship victory with an incredible nine race wins and a record breaking 383 championship points earned. The status of reigning MotoGP World Champion gives the young Mallorcan rider the unique opportunity to change his racing number to No 1 as he defends his title this season. Lorenzo today confirmed his intention to run the coveted No 1 on his Yamaha Factory Racing M1 race bike, revealing a clever design incorporating his JL initials. This will be the first time a Yamaha MotoGP rider has worn the No 1 since Wayne Rainey defended his World Championship title in 1993 for the third consecutive time.
"Today I can reveal my No 1," said Jorge Lorenzo. "I am very proud because you have to work very hard to have the option to wear it. I have been lucky with my design because the No 1 works really well with my JL initials, maybe with different letters it would have been difficult to make it look right, I hope my fans will like it! I won't forget my No 99 this season, it will be there somewhere on my leathers because No 99 is in my heart. It was a difficult choice to change my number but I have earned the right for this unique opportunity.

Grosjean hired by Lotus as back-up driver French pilot Romain Grosjean was on Sunday given a second opportunity to make a name for himself in Formula One when Lotus Renault signed him as their reserve driver for next season.
The 24-year-old, who failed to register a point in his seven previous Grand Prix when he teamed-up with Spain's two-time world champion Fernando Alonso at Renault in 2009, said he was delighted to be given another chance.
"2011 will be my comeback year with a third driver spot at Lotus Renault and a whole season in GP2 and GP2 Asia with the Dams team," said Grosjean.
"To be third pilot... allows me to gain a huge amount of experience, to be in the paddock, to see people, and to understand what I was lacking in my first Formula One experience.
"Now my idea is to be a race driver in 2012," he told automoto.fr.
Grosjean will understudy for race drivers, Polish star Robert Kubica, who finished eighth overall last year, and Vitaly Petrov of Russia, who had a promising first season finishing 13th.

Team co-owner Gary Baker said the team has not officially folded. He said it will re-open its doors if and when a sponsor is found. Baker co-owns the team with music mogul Mike Curb. It was known as Brewco Motorsports when they bought it and moved it from Kentucky to Nashville. Racin' Today

IndyCar CEO sees Grand Prix as a chance to showcase Baltimore The Baltimore Grand Prix is coming Labor Day weekend, just four months after Indy Car racing celebrates 100 years of history, tradition and passion at the Memorial Day classic Indianapolis 500. The two events are not as far apart as they may seem at first glance. The open wheel sport is trying to rebuild and reinvigorate itself and Baltimore could be a key to that renewal.
Randy Bernard, who turns 44 Monday, is the Izod IndyCar Series CEO and the person in charge of its immediate future. He has been on the job for 11 months. This week he was in Baltimore to help the Baltimore Grand Prix promoters create a little buzz about the event.
Bernard came to the sport from Professional Bull Riders, Inc., where as CEO he took $20,000 in seed money and built the sport to worldwide popularity. Now, he is trying to re-establish IndyCar racing, a sport that took a beating for the last 16 years due to a fracture that broke the sport into two competing entities, Championship Auto Racing Teams and the Indy Racing League. The two organizations came back together in 2008, after long, rancorous debate and bankruptcy. Last February Bernard became CEO. The first thing he did was get rid of anything associated with CART and the IRL. More ...
