Video: Racing a Production-based Car with John Heinricy
There's probably no better way to get your feet wet in racing than by driving in a production-based car.

While these cars have strict technical limitations, there are some key things you can do to gain the "unfair advantage".

And there's no better person to help give you that advantage than John Heinricy, who's career combines engineering excellence with racing talent. He served as Director of the GM Performance Division and assistant chief engineer for the Corvette, while also driving a number of GM products in SCCA competition, eventually claiming 12 SCCA National Championships. Heinricy was also a lap record-holder at the Nurburgring.

IndyCar's Winter of Discontent: Where Does the Series Go from Here?
Since Tony George destroyed CART, and with it IndyCar Racing, the sport suffers from a lack of leadership to turn it around, going from one misstep to the next
Because we're cockeyed optimists (or at least cockeyed), we have to assume there's a plan percolating somewhere inside the office at 4551 West 16th Street, the Indianapolis address that houses the main offices of IndyCar. Among the highly paid and exceptionally well-dressed executives that work there is Mark Miles, chief executive officer of Hulman & Company, which not only oversees Clabber Girl baking powder and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway but also the IndyCar Series.

(Pause for a kick-ass piece of trivia: What exactly is a "clabber girl"? Well, prior to the invention of baking powder, cooks used a variety of items to leaven baked goods, including sour milk. Milk was "clabbered," or soured for several days, so it could be used for leavening. Presumably, then, a clabber girl is a girl who sours fresh milk. Insert your own Rachel Maddow or Ann Coulter joke here.)

Mark Miles looks a little like a younger version of automotive executive Bob Lutz, so he immediately engenders within observers an impression of both competence and mild unease. He has become the face of IndyCar in the aftermath of CEO Randy Bernard being sent packing in 2012. But where Bernard was an unabashed, if initially uninformed, cheerleader for IndyCar, Miles seems more like an uncomfortable custodian there to stem the bleeding. Presumably he has not done a bad job - IndyCar remains the "Number-One Open-Wheel Series In America," just as Clabber Girl is the "Leading Baking Powder in the United States." But exactly where IndyCar goes from here is anyone's guess.

IndyCar decides not to replace cancelled Brasilia race
IndyCar, the governing body of the Verizon IndyCar Series, announced via a statement that it would not fill the void on the 2015 schedule because of the cancellation  of the race in Brasilia, Brazil.

It read: INDYCAR has explored several possibilities in an attempt to find a replacement event following the cancellation of the March 8 race in Brasília. Due to the lack of time for suitable planning and the limited number of options, the series has concluded it is not feasible to organize a replacement race on that weekend. INDYCAR will determine other opportunities for its teams and drivers at that time following a review of the current testing schedule.

Kvyat loses wing, Lotus impresses with nose
Maldonado in the Lotus E23
(GMM)  Red Bull and Lotus caused a stir on Monday as the first test of the 2015 pre-season continued at Jerez.

Daniil Kvyat had a bad start to life as a race driver for the energy drink company's senior team by running off the Spanish circuit and damaging the front wing.

"That was the only one we have here," said team boss Christian Horner.

So Red Bull simply removed the wing from its damaged nose supports and sent the Russian driver back out on track for slow installation laps.

Gene to Nissan
Marc Gene
Marc Gene
The first driver of Nissan's Le Mans challenger, the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO, has been revealed as Marc Gene. The Spanish ace has an exemplary record in LM P1 racing with eight LM P1 Le Mans 24 Hours races under his belt. Gene's experience is much in demand and he has been test driver at Scuderia Ferrari since 2005.

How important do you think it is for a new team to have an experienced driver like yourself?

"Nissan NISMO is a great team already. From the very beginning I have experienced a very good atmosphere in the team. The mechanics and engineers are all very professional and most have Le Mans experience. From my side, my experience in works teams will definitely help Nissan as I have already faced the challenge we are all now facing. Our goal is to reach the podium and ultimately win Le Mans. However we are all aware that at Le Mans there are no shortcuts and we will only achieve our goals with time and hard work, especially now that it is probably the most competitive Le Mans ever with four different manufacturers."

Lotus E23 breaks cover at Jerez test (Update) UPDATE
Lotus E23
Lotus has publicly unveiled its Mercedes-powered E23 Hybrid on the second day of the opening pre-season test at Jerez.

Lotus released computer images of its new car last month but the E23 Hybrid was not fired up for the first time until Saturday.

That meant that the car did not arrive in Spain in time for the first day of testing, with it eventually reaching the track early on Sunday evening.

Lotus informed the media that its car may not run until Tuesday but Venezuelan driver Pastor Maldonado took the car out for an installation lap just over an hour into Monday's running.

02/01/15 Lotus F1 Team's 2015 challenger, the E23 Hybrid, arrived in Jerez today after firing-up for the first time at the team's Enstone base on Saturday January 31. IP Deutschland, RTL's commercial partner, "has reduced the prizes for TV commercials during F1 broadcasts due to declining ratings." Sebastian Vettel fastest for Ferrari on first day of testing at Jerez (Update 2)
UPDATE #2
Sebastian Vettel was impressed with the number of laps Mercedes were able to do

Below are quotes from Ferrari' Sebastian Vettel and Mercedes' Toto Wolff after today's test.

#5 Sebastian Vettel, Scuderia Ferrari

"I think lap times are not that important in the end - it's the amount of laps [that counts],"Surely it's better to be closer to the front rather than a long way behind, but I think in terms of laps there's still a lot of improvement we can do. The reference is still Mercedes, they did 150-200 laps today, so they've proven they start off with a very reliable car - hopefully not as quick as last year.

"I think that's what everyone is hoping for, but you have to give fair credit to them - they're doing a very good job. It will be a surprise if they're not as strong as they were last year.

No 'old' engine strategy for Mercedes in 2015
(GMM)  Mercedes has hit back at rumors it might begin the 2015 season with 'old' engines for strategic reasons.

It has been suggested the title-defending team, expected to still be wielding a significant advantage this year, might race in Melbourne with the 2014-spec unit and therefore keep all 32 development 'tokens' up its sleeve for the championship fight.

But as the W06 was officially unveiled at Jerez on Sunday as the opening winter test began, the German team's engine boss Andy Cowell insisted: "I can assure you that we have the 2015 engine in the car right from the first test.

Swan Motorsports signs Mallinen for 2015 USF2000 season
Ft. Worth, TX - Swan Motorsports is pleased to announce that Max Mallinen will be driving for its Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda team in 2015. Mallinen is a 16-year-old professional race car driver who competed in the 2014 F1600 Championship Series that marked his first full season in race cars.

"I worked with Max last year, in his first full season of car racing, driving the F1600 car," said Mirl Swan, President of Swan Motorsports. "At the start of last season, I kept having to remind myself that Max was only 15-years-old, and only learned to drive a car with a manual transmission just a couple months before he was racing! He's quick, intelligent and very motivated.  He came very close to winning the SCCA Runoffs in only his ninth ever race start.  And watching him change the lead back and forth a few times with Verizon Indycar driver Josef Newgarden at last year's FF Festival made me realize that very little intimidates him. He made great strides as a racing driver in 2014.  I'm sure that he'll carry that momentum from last year, and continue his development against some great drivers and teams in the 2015 USF2000 Series."

"Rick wanted to retire that number for maybe one year or a certain period of time - you never know what NASCAR allows," said Gordon, who will retire from full-time racing after the 2015 season.

IndyCar Didn't Even Know Brazil Was Canceling Its Season Opener
Brazilian reports suggest that the government agency that owns the track itself and was funding the event pulled out at the last minute, leaving IndyCar's March 8 opener without a home.

Brazilian TV station and broadcaster for the event Band TV claims that Terracap (translated as "Development Agency of the Federal District") unilaterally cancelled the contract for the race.

Poor IndyCar didn't even know it was happening, having published a number of recent reports boasting how successful the race was going to be.  Talk about getting egg on your face by not even knowing what's going on with your races behind the scenes. This government axe cost them a race in a country that loves motor racing that seemed like a natural fit for a race outside the United States.

McDonald: IndyCar on borrowed time (Update) UPDATE Q: I don't know how credible any of this is but I just read an article by Norris McDonald, Wheels Editor, from the Toronto Star website. His article dated 1/25 is titled "IndyCar on Borrowed Time; TSN, SportsNet Ignore Daytona" cites an email from a 'friend' that claims the following: "I recently read that at least one major IndyCar sponsor isn't with the series this year and two are on their last year and won't renew because of the short season. If that isn't a wake-up call, then what the hell is Miles waiting for?" I'm assuming the one sponsor that was talked about was the National Guard? But have you heard anything about other major sponsors pulling the plug? I will now refer to IndyCar in any future emails I compose as the 'NFL' (for Not F-ing Listening!)
Rob Peterson, Rochester, NY

Robin Miller, Racer.com: Not sure which sponsors Norris was referring to but his story echoed what a lot of us have been writing and saying the past several months. I won’t go into detail (yet) but one IndyCar owner told me he sent Miles an email a couple months ago because one of his primary sponsors was going to bail after 2015 unless the season got lengthened by at least two-three months. (BTW, he claims he’s still waiting on a response from Miles). Another owner showed me a letter from a longtime sponsor that declined to be involved this season because a six-month season wasn’t workable. It appears that the only people who think a short season is a good idea is Miles and, of course, the Boston Consulting Group. But the short season isn’t why The National Guard pulled the plug.

Miles wary about possible return to Brazil
IndyCar officials still had not received official confirmation from the Brasilia Federal District that its scheduled March 8 series opener there was canceled, but CEO Mark Miles told USA TODAY Sports on Friday the series is ''very concerned'' about the government dynamic in the South American country.

Miles said anecdotal evidence of political maneuvering all but confirms the doom of the race in Brazil, a country in economic upheaval, for the calendar year.

Such is the quandary for IndyCar as it attempts to broaden its appeal while balancing itself economically in the United States in the shadow of NASCAR and internationally in the shadow of powerhouse Formula One.

Video: Tesla P85D Insane Mode Launch Reactions Compilation
Tesla Motors Inc. installed a special feature in its dual-motor Model S P85D that is blowing people's minds. No, not an ejector seat (yet), but a button that throws a driver into "insane mode."

What's insane mode? It's when the car accelerates from 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds. Yep, you read that right. The car's acceleration is on par with some of the world's fastest sports cars from the likes of Ferrari and Lamborghini.

DragTimes, a YouTube channel that tests the acceleration of fast cars, created a compilation video of passengers' reactions to the feature. The channel set up a dash cam in a Model S and lured some unsuspecting people in for a ride. Their reactions bring to mind what you might see when someone takes off on a roller coaster.

Juncos Racing Paces Indy Lights Oval Test
Spencer Pigot
The first official Indy Lights Presented by Cooper Tires oval test concluded yesterday to rave reviews on the 1.485-mile Homestead-Miami Speedway circuit. Eleven drivers combined for a total of 1200 incident-free laps aboard the new Mazda-powered Dallara IL-15 as teams worked on initial setups in preparation for three oval races on the 2015 schedule. Despite three oval racing novices, the field was covered by just nine-tenths of a second.

"It was a good oval test day; all were pretty well behaved," noted Tony Cotman, Indy Lights Race Director and Dallara IL-15 project manager. "I'm sure there are a few surprises on the timesheet but that's what we like. It's interesting to watch teams approaching things from different perspectives. The speeds were quick especially considering how much downforce teams were running. Running in traffic and race craft is a totally different challenge so there's a whole lot more to learn. Hopefully they are tuned up for the next oval test at Chicagoland [May 14]."

IndyCar: Brasilia Race Cancelled (4th Update)
UPDATE
With $100 million needed in improvements, It's hard to imagine the economics of the Brasilia event would have made sense.  Why was a track in such bad shape chosen in the first place?

This article from ABC News outlines some of the reasons the IndyCar race in Brasilia was cancelled. One interesting nugget is that the local government admits there was a clause guaranteeing INDYCAR $27 million for breach of contract. However, the position of the municipality is that clause pertained to INDYCAR and Band TV.

Who knows exactly. It does seem, however, that this might get messy from a legal standpoint. Here's the article

The IndyCar Series opener scheduled for March in Brazil was canceled after public prosecutors warned it would cost the local government too much and waste public funds, organizers said on Friday.

The government said prosecutors recommended the cancellation because the race was "not in the best interest of society," and there was a "clear inversion in the priorities for public spending With $100 million needed in improvements, it's hard to imagine the economics of the Brasilia event.

We will move forward and continue to do our very best to succeed in our goal of winning this championship, which is one of the most difficult championships in all of motor racing. The #10 Wayne Taylor Racing Corvette

DAYTONA BEACH - IMSA, the sanctioning body for the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship and the 2015 Rolex 24 At Daytona, has announced that Wayne Taylor Racing's Jordan Taylor did exceed the maximum four hours allowed for a driver in each six-hour period of last weekend's Rolex 24, despite the fact that he made a late-race stop in hopes to keep that from occurring.

It was already an unfortunate end to the race for Wayne Taylor Racing's No. 10 Konica Minolta Corvette DP, when Jordan Taylor had to dive into the pits for a last-minute driver change to his brother, Ricky, with 11 minutes to go.
