Former Red Bull, Jaguar Designer Rob Taylor To Lead Haas F1's Design
Rob Taylor
Former Red Bull and Jaguar Chief Designer Rob Taylor is to head up the design of Haas's new Formula 1 car, according to Rencken & Noble of AUTOSPORT. Although the construction of its 2016 F1 challenger is "being overseen by Italian racing car maker Dallara, Haas has appointed Taylor as its chief designer to oversee the project." Taylor was at Jaguar Racing and "led the design of Red Bull's first F1 car before making a move to McLaren."

Amid a "major tie-up with Ferrari, plus its status as a new American team, there has been growing interest" in the color scheme that Haas will use in '16. Team Owner Gene Haas has suggested its cars "could be yellow." Haas said, "After a while all these silver or gray cars become kind of the same. ... I like yellow; personally, I think a solid yellow would be nice" AUTOSPORT

Mercedes changes exhaust on latest F1 engine
Following a year of running with a very compact log style exhaust in 2014, Mercedes have now chosen to ditch the concept and go for a more conventional equal length exhaust manifold as seen on the 2014 Renault engine.

An obviously different noise coming from the Mercedes powered cars this week in Jerez was followed by a further confirmation from Mercedes' Head of Engines at Brixworth, Andy Cowell that the new Mercedes 2015 power unit, named PU106B, features an 'entirely new exhaust concept'.

FOX Sports 1 Remembers Transformative 1979 Daytona 500 With Two Specials Airing
The fight that changed the history of NASCAR
"And there's a fight … between Cale Yarborough and Donnie Allison!  The tempers overflowing; they're angry; they know they have lost, and what a bitter defeat."

That bitter defeat in the Daytona 500, as called live by the legendary Ken Squier on CBS, Feb. 18, 1979, turned out to be a very lucky day for NASCAR.  The ensuing fistfight between Cale Yarborough, Donnie Allison and Bobby Allison following Yarborough and Donnie Allison's last-lap crash transfixed a national audience held captive in living rooms during a major blizzard on the East Coast.  The race, marking the first time a NASCAR event was broadcast live flag-to-flag, scored what was then a record television audience and plastered NASCAR across front pages nationwide the following morning. NASCAR, long a regional sport, had been transformed to a national sport virtually overnight.

Daly fast, but will he have to buy his IndyCar ride?
With the ride-buying cancer destroying the sport, Conor Daly wonders if speed or a big checkbook means more in IndyCar.
For the first time in over two years, Conor Daly was back in an IndyCar on a road course yesterday in Sebring, Florida. He joined James Hinchcliffe in the Schmidt Peterson Honda powered Dallara's for their opening test of the season. "I was here today to support Hinch's test program and to provide Schmidt Peterson with whatever feedback I could to help position them for success this season," commented Daly, just before he stepped into the number 7 car wearing his trademark green shoes.

After spending the last four years in Europe competing in GP3 and GP2, Daly is now focused on the Verizon IndyCar Series. "I absolutely loved being back in an IndyCar but I was livid in the cockpit when I accidentally hit the pit speed limiter on my fast lap," said a frustrated Daly. "Hinch laughed at me, but I was still annoyed."

Daly puts best foot forward in audition
Conor Daly - was he fast or slow as a snail?  Not caring about its fans, IndyCar keeps offseason test times a secret.
Conor Daly wore his "lucky" shoes and a fresh firesuit, and patted the nose of the stark white No. 7 Dallara chassis bearing his name on either side of the cockpit "for luck."

But luck is really the confluence of preparation and opportunity as Daly auditioned for a 2015 ride with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports at Sebring International Raceway alongside regular driver James Hinchcliffe.

"I've never prepared more for a day in my life," said Daly, who made his Verizon IndyCar Series debut in the 2013 Indianapolis 500 Mile Race with A.J. Foyt Racing. "It is the dream and the goal to be competing full time in IndyCar. This is a great first start with this opportunity to test."

Jerez Day 4: Raikkonen ends test on top for Ferrari
Kimi Raikkonen

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen ended the first Formula 1 test of 2015 on top for Ferrari, setting the fastest time of the week at Jerez on Wednesday afternoon. In fact Ferrari led the times all four days, except one when Felipe Nasr snuck in a fast time on soft tires while Ferrari were on mediums.

The 2007 world champion spent most of the day at the top of the times, running on the medium and hard-compound tires during the morning, before switching to some soft-tire running late in the afternoon.

Raikkonen thinks Ferrari is in much better shape this year.

IndyCar again fails to provide test times
[Editor's Note: Unlike F1 that provides test times for all its offseason testing to keep fans engaged until the season starts, IndyCar continues to fail to understand the importance of what its fans want.  So we apologize that we are unable to provide test times from Sebring, just quotes, which most fans could care less about.  The name of this sport is speed, not talk, and which drivers are the best.  Drivers can talk all they want, if they are slow as snails, that talk means nothing!]

Marco Andretti, was he slow or was he fast?
Eight drivers turn laps at Sebring private test: Eight Verizon IndyCar Series driver/car combinations turned laps on the Sebring International Raceway short course Feb. 3 in the first multi-team test of 2015.

The sessions included Luca Filippi, who was named last week by CFH Racing to drive the No. 20 Fuzzy's Award Winning Vodka car on road/street courses this season. Team co-owner/driver Ed Carpenter will compete on the ovals. Also, Conor Daly, who made his Verizon IndyCar Series debut in the 2013 Indianapolis 500 with A.J. Foyt Racing and has been competing in the GP2 Series the past few seasons, was testing the No. 7 Honda for Schmidt Peterson Motorsports alongside regular driver James Hinchcliffe.

Gordon talks more about TV plans
Rick Hendrick and Jeff Gordon
Four-time NASCAR premier series champion Jeff Gordon was a guest Tuesday on "FOX & Friends," and he discussed more details of his new job as a FOX race analyst. "I am going to do three races this year for FOX and FOX Sports, XFINITY races," Gordon said. "I'm excited to get in the booth and see what it's like. Who knows what might come out of it?"

Those three races comprise nearly a quarter of the 14 NASCAR XFINITY Series races that FOX and FOX Sports 1 will televise in 2015. When asked whether he would consider going into the booth full time after handing the reins of the #24 Chevy SS to Chase Elliott, Gordon reiterated that he'd be ready but knows he has a lot to learn this year.

"I love to travel and I love racing," Gordon said. "I'm always going to be a part of Hendrick Motorsports. It's not going to be like focused on driving a race car, but I don't take it for granted. It is going to be tough to do, and we'll see. We'll find out this year."

Sabates closes Bentley dealership
For those who drive a Bentley, or hope to soon, High Point, NC is your likely destination, not Charlotte. NASCAR team owner Felix Sabates opened the first and only Bentley dealership in Charlotte in late 2013, but, as of last Friday, it's closed.

In a letter dated Jan. 20, Sabates told customers, "My partners and I have decided after losing dollars above seven figures, it is in our best financial interest to discontinue the sale of Bentley automobiles in Charlotte. Bentley Motors makes great automobiles, but unfortunately a single high-end brand new car dealership cannot survive in this market, and we were limited by contract with our landlord with what brand of pre-owned cars we could sell." Sabates opened a Mercedes-Benz dealership in Pineville in 2006.

Closing statements filed in Busch hearing
Driscoll and Busch
Attorneys filed their closing arguments Tuesday in the no-contact order hearing involving NASCAR's Kurt Busch.

The written summations mark the closing stages of an atypical hearing that heard testimony from Busch's ex-girlfriend, Patricia Driscoll, who alleged the driver smashed her head against the wall three times during a September race weekend in Dover, and from Busch, who claimed Driscoll was a trained assassin who could take him down at any moment.

Busch's legal camp have long denied Driscoll's allegations and instead claimed she was a jilted ex-lover who was determined to ruin the driver's career. On the stand Busch contended that he never slammed her head, never grabbed her by the throat or pushed her head against the wall. Instead, he says he cupped her face and told her to leave.
