Shawn Langdon
Shawn Langdon claimed the No. 1 qualifying position in Top Fuel Saturday afternoon in record-setting fashion at the Circle K NHRA Winternationals. The final round of qualifying was cancelled due to rain.

V8 Supercars Saturday SuperTest
Nissan has fired the first shots of the 2015 V8 Supercars Championship season, with Todd Kelly posting the day's fastest time at the sydney.com SuperTest at Sydney Motorsport Park.

It was the first time on track the 25 cars in 2015, and teams used the track-time to find solid, consistent pace across the day's sessions, before a quick-fire 10-minute period late in the final session where times tumbled.

Kelly piloted his Nissan Motorsport Altima to a 1:29.5352, eight-thousandths of a second faster than second placed man, the Holden Racing Team's James Courtney.

Petition to bring back the apron at Indy
[Editor's Note: Adding back the apron takes away the skill required to win at Indy.  It increases speeds artificially and will not improve the show for IndyCars at all.  It will help IndyCar's arch-enemy, NASCAR, immensely as their wallowing taxicabs struggle to put on a good show at Indy.  So if you want to help NASCAR, go ahead and sign this petition.  The passing during the Indy 500 has been great.  No need to ruin a good thing.]

Talk is cheap, and although the IMS has talked of bringing back the apron. I will believe it when I see it, and until then I say we depend on fan's like ourselves to drive the message home, how important it is to us fan's! I would like to think the IMS would bring this to fruition without being reminded. But just in case this was free to do, and the squeaky wheel does get the grease!

This is not up for debate! You either would like to see the apron brought back. Or you don't like the idea. And therefore will not be signing this petition! Thanks to all of you that take the time to care, and make a difference! And I respect those of you who chose not to sign. Paul Palmieri

Marc Marquez: "Riding in the 1'58s at Sepang was a special moment"
As it was the past two years, this is the view the other riders will have of Marc Marquez in 2015
Marc Marquez has begun the 2015 preseason in excellent form, preparing to defend his MotoGP title for the second consecutive year. After three days of intense work, the Repsol Honda rider concluded the final day with the fastest lap ever set at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia. The Spaniard once again demonstrated that he and the Honda RC213V will be hard to beat this season.

How was the first race simulation of the year?
"The truth is that it went very well. I chose to go out when the temperatures were higher, at 2:30pm, because that's when the conditions are most similar to a Grand Prix. It is difficult to compare with other riders, because everyone chooses a different time to go out, but it went very well. We were able to collect a lot of data for the engineers from Honda and tried different engine mapping that helped me to understand many things. Doing a race simulation by yourself is a little more boring than a race; it's tough, but you are still not riding at the limit. We will try to further improve the new bike, because we believe that there is still room for improvement, but we are very happy with the base that we have and I think that there is the potential to have another good year."

Sandbagging Lewis Hamilton not impressed by Ferrari
Hamilton knows he will easily win the 2015 F1 title with his vastly superior Mercedes.  F1 is 99% car and 1% driver.
Lewis Hamilton says Ferrari's pace during the first test at Jerez was down to a "more attacking" run plan than Mercedes.

Ferrari raised eyebrows by completing consistent mileage while also setting the fastest times of the week with Sebastian Vettel top on the first two days and Kimi Raikkonen quickest on day four. However, Hamilton says he didn’t pay attention to Ferrari’s progress during the test but expects the lap times were due to a different approach to the opening week.

"I've not really been looking to be honest, I've just been focusing on doing my own thing," Hamilton said. "I'm sure they're on different fuel loads to others, and they look like they're doing shorter, more attacking runs which we are not."

Mark Martin no longer working with Roush Fenway
Old man Mark Martin
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series veteran Mark Martin, who was hired last July as a driver development coach for Roush Fenway Racing, is no longer with the organization. Asked Friday on Twitter if he would be working with RFR's crop of young drivers in the upcoming season, Martin responded, simply, "No."

Martin, who drove for Roush Fenway from 1988-2006 -- the vast majority of his Sprint Cup career -- said at the time of his hiring as a driver development coach that he was happy to be reuniting with the organization where he earned 35 of his 40 career Sprint Cup wins.

It was announced in mid-January that Martin, 56, has joined forces with late model dirt-racing legend Scott Bloomquist to field two entries in the Lucas Oil Late Model Championship in 2015. Bloomquist and up-and-coming driver Jared Landers will drive the two team cars, respectively, with both carrying sponsorship from Batesville, Ark.-based Mark Martin Automotive Group. FoxSports

Indy president promising higher speeds, attendance this May
There are no cars running at Indy this time of year - the track sits in the frozen tundra of central Indiana. Try to stick a shovel in the ground and it will break off

Despite the snow on the ground and the nip in the air, race fans and Indianapolis Motor Speedway officials are already thinking about the Indianapolis 500 this spring.

And why not? More than a few racing experts are saying that, with new modifications to the car, the Speedway's 19-year-old qualifying record could be eclipsed.

On Tuesday, IMS officials rolled out plans for May, which include starting - for the first time in several years - the month-long activities on the first weekend of May, rolling out the new-look aero kits for the race cars, and moving practice back one hour May 11 to give working fans a chance to soak in more of the action.

Marquez breaks 1m58s bracket at Sepang

On 17 December 2014, the team made a request to the Strategy Group to consider allowing it to use a 2014 race car, modified to meet certain 2015 regulations, for part of the 2015 season. Following analysis, the team highlighted that this would need some form of dispensation on only a small number of clauses in the Regulations.

Attorney: Kurt Busch has domestic violence problem
Busch's attorney accused Driscoll (L) of trying to ruin Busch because he dumped her
Kurt Busch and his attorneys engaged in a smear campaign to cover up the driver's alleged abuse of his ex-girlfriend, according to court documents filed in Kent County Family Court on Thursday.

In a rebuttal of closing arguments filed Wednesday in which Busch's attorneys accused Patricia Driscoll of perjury, Carolyn McNeice, Driscoll's attorney, wrote that her client did not perjure herself. McNeice said that Busch's legal team sought to smear Driscoll's reputation to distract from the very real allegations that the driver grabbed her by the throat and slammed her head three times against the wall during a race weekend in Dover.

"I suggest instead that Respondent [Busch] does not have a public relations problem; he has a domestic violence problem," McNeice wrote. "He committed an act of abuse and the Court should find in Mrs. Driscoll's favor."

Teaming up with Formula 1 pilot Nico Hulkenberg (Germany), they will contend both races in a third 919 Hybrid.

NHRA Oildown Policy Changes

Stern wins first race of MD Varsity Karting Championship
The start
(Jessup, Maryland -- February 3rd, 2015) Jemicy School's Brendan Stern held off Jackie Ding of Sandy Spring Friends School to take the checkered flag in the inaugural points-paying event of the Maryland Varsity Karting League.

With a blistering 18.36-second lap on the Autobahn Speedway Le Mans Course, Stern edged out River Hill's Zack Spicer for pole position prior to the race. Ding, who has competed in Skip Barber formula cars, would start third.

When the green fell, Stern jumped out to the lead, while Ding got past Spicer into the tight turn 1 left-hander. From there, the Sandy Spring driver began to apply relentless pressure on Stern. When asked if he was ever nervous about surrendering the lead to Ding, Stern told AutoRacing1 columnist Brian Carroccio, "a little bit; he had a lot more speed than me on the outside."

Graham Rahal Completes First Test Day of 2015 at Sebring (Update) UPDATE A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, I see Graham Rahal running an orange Mi-Jack car during testing this week. Since Mike Lanigan (I assume) would prefer to spend someone else's money, this appears to be a car without a primary paying sponsor. A scenario I'm afraid we will see quite a bit this year and maybe the norm before it's over within 5 yrs.  R.J. Thompson

Dear RJ, We have said for years that as long as IndyCar races remain on NBCSN, resulting in miniscule TV ratings, sponsors would head for the doors and new ones would be hard to find. IndyCar likes collecting that big check from NBCSN to help pay for their Leader Circle welfare program that props teams up financial, but the whole system is broken and won't improve until the Hulman George family sell the series.  The only thing they care about is their Indy 500.  Everything else is just an evil necessity. Line Looks to Defend Winternationals Title with Powerful Launch into 2015
Jason Line

Mooresville, N.C., The 2015 season of NHRA's Mello Yello Drag Racing Series has arrived, and at this weekend's 55th annual Circle K NHRA Winternationals, Summit Racing Pro Stock driver Jason Line hopes to begin a year-long quest to even the score. Last season, he came just one win light shy of finishing the deal for his third championship title, a trophy he longed to bring home for Team Summit and the Ken Black-owned KB Racing organization. Historic Auto Club Raceway at Pomona is the ideal setting to begin the journey - the 35-time Pro Stock winner scored the victory at Winternationals last year.

Last year's Winternationals win came at the expense of V. Gaines in the final round as Line got the nod with a 6.526 to his opponent's 6.533. Three more wins would follow in 2014 for a total of four event trophies earned in a remarkable nine final rounds. Line held the points lead through the better half of the Countdown to the Championship, and at the decision was only made in the last round of the very last race. Line and his opponent, Erica Enders-Stevens, both reacted too quickly at the tree and logged respective foul starts, but Enders-Stevens was the lesser offender and took the trophy.

Stewart still says no plans to run sprint cars in future
Tony Stewart
Nearly six months after his role in an accident that claimed the life of 20-year-old sprint car driver Kevin Ward Jr., Tony Stewart says he has no plans to drive a sprint car and may never get behind the wheel of a sprint car again. Appearing Tuesday night on SiriusXM NASCAR Radio's "Tony Stewart Live," the three-time NASCAR Sprint Cup Series champion spoke out on a host of timely topics with the official start of the 2015 Sprint Cup Series season less than three weeks away.

Making Stewart's admission of his plans not to go sprint car racing anytime soon was his recent purchase of the All-Star Circuit of Champions, a traveling sprint car series that is a staple of grassroots, open-wheel racing. "I'm not going to be in a sprint car for a while, if ever again," Stewart, who suffered a broken leg in a sprint car in August 2013, said on SiriusXM. "This is a way to give back to the sport. I'm passionate about it. I'm really excited." FoxSports
