IndyCar gives Tracy, Tags cold shoulder
Alex Tagliani gets no love from IndyCar
The IZOD IndyCar Series has made its decision on which drivers and teams will get the approximately $1.3 million each in subsidies for the 2012 season.

And to no one’s surprise Canadians Paul Tracy and Alex Tagliani are not on the list, although Oakville’s James Hinchcliffe did make the cut with the No. 27 team from Andretti Autosport.

The so-called Leader Circle program is meant to reward teams for both past performance and a commitment to a full season of racing in 2012. More ...

Kahne undergoes knee surgery  Motorsports driver Kasey Kahne will be ready for the Budweiser Shootout, the Daytona 500 and all of Daytona Speedweeks after undergoing successful outpatient knee surgery this morning. Kahne, driver of the #5 Chevy, had an MRI Thursday after experiencing swelling in his left knee. The MRI revealed a torn meniscus, which was treated this morning with a partial medial meniscus removal. Following the common arthroscopic procedure, he was released from an outpatient facility in Charlotte, N.C. Kahne will practice, qualify and race throughout NASCAR's season-opening Speedweeks, and Hendrick Motorsports has no plans to have a backup driver on standby in Daytona Beach, Fla. In April 2011, Kahne had a procedure on his right meniscus and earned a third-place finish the following race at Richmond, Va.

NASCAR makes fuel injection sound like it's some new marvel  Almost all race cars have been using fuel injection for decades.  Antiquated NASCAR is just now adopting it.  In the following press release NASCAR is making it sound as though it's some new marvel that its fans should go gaga over.  From the press we have seen one might even think they invented fuel injection, soft walls, HANS Device and every other improvement in racing. The fact is they are the last to adopt anything new.

Simply put, NASCAR's move to electronic fuel injection hasn't gotten the press it deserves. There have been more pressing concerns. The sanctioning body and Sprint Cup teams were so focused on rule changes designed to break up sustained two-car drafts during mid-January tests at Daytona International Speedway that the impending competitive debut of EFI went virtually unnoticed. Nevertheless, the introduction of EFI represents a profound change that goes far beyond bringing Cup racecars closer to models found in the showroom. Here are the basics: More ...

Milwaukee added to 2012 IndyCar schedule after Andretti saves it  UPDATE
Last year's race suffered from poor attendance.  Hopefully Andretti can make it a success
The race will be on Friday and Saturday the 15th and 16th, not Saturday and Sunday the 16th and 17th. Our race schedule page has been updated.

Michael Andretti has always had a love affair with the Milwaukee Mile and the former Indy car star is making sure the storied oval stays on the IZOD IndyCar schedule for 2012.

Andretti, five times a winner during his CART career at Milwaukee, will be the promoter of the June 16th race – a Saturday show – which gives INDYCAR its 16th race, its fifth oval and keeps the tradition of its oldest venue alive.

After having no race in 2010, INDYCAR returned to State Fair Park last Father’s Day but had a dismal turnout and the new promoter lost his behind so it appeared the racy oval the drivers love was gone forever.

But Michael began negotiating with the city, state and fair board three months ago and a massive press conference was planned for later this month before the announcement was posted Friday on the Milwaukee Mile website.

INDYCAR CEO Randy Bernard was hoping to make it public for the first time at Monday’s State of the Series address in Indianapolis.

Initially, Andretti wanted to hold practice, qualifying and the race all on June 16 but ABC needed an early afternoon time slot so practice and qualifying will be held on Friday, June 15th.

And the hope is that the day before Father’s Day is more appealing to fans. Speedtv.com

A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, I know that IndyCar and Milwaukee were probably limited as far as dates available but, if June 16-17, 2012 is any indication as far as dates go, here is what they will be up against from an attendance/TV number standpoint:

June 17: Father's Day
June 14-17: US Open Golf tournament at The Olympic Club in San Francisco broadcasted on NBC, most likely in primetime since it's on the west coast (this was the case in 2008 at Torrey Pines in San Diego, CA and 2010 at Pebble Beach in Monterey, CA). If Tiger Woods is in the hunt, for sure nobody will tune into IndyCar’s at Milwaukee.
June 17: Nascar at Michigan (same geographic region)
June 16: Nationwide Series at Michigan (same geographic region)

Other notables are whether the NBA Finals will be on during this time period since the lockout delayed the season. Last years finals played well into June. NHL and Stanley Cup playoffs goes into mid-June. Baseball is in full force, NFL training camps just around the corner. I know that Andretti has done a great job with the St. Pete race and Toronto seems like it is improving each year but, is this another disaster waiting to happen? Brandon Stevens

02/10/12 The Milwaukee Mile will be back on the 2012 IZOD IndyCar Series calendar, as the track website has listed a June 16-17 date. IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard has said in previous interviews he'll reveal a 16th race at Monday's State of IndyCar presentation to the media in Indianapolis.

On its website, the track posted: “Find out who will be immortalized in the Milwaukee Mile record book this year.”

Honda Indy V8 Honored by Race Engine Magazine  Race Engine Technology magazine, a respected British technical publication, has named the Honda Indy V8 engine as its "North American Race Engine of the Year" for 2011.

In its latest issue, the Honda Indy V8 engine was recognized by Race Engine Technology for its combination of reliability, performance and equality during its just-concluded six-year run as the engine supplied to every team taking part in the IZOD IndyCar Series.

Honda took on the role of single engine supplier to IndyCar racing in 2006, after scoring back- to-back Manufacturers' Championships the previous two seasons.  Throughout six years as single engine supplier, 98 different drivers completed more than one million miles (1,188,366) of practice, qualifying and racing, with only six in-race engine failures.  No in-race failures were reported during the entire 2008, 2010 and 2011 race seasons.  More ...

Circuit of the Americas provides construction update  Circuit of the Americas provided its first 2012 construction update on Thursday, with several notable accomplishments revealed for the facility that will host its first United States Grand Prix Formula 1 race on Nov. 18.

Kahler said the first of six zones of the pit building has been topped out. This first zone will house race control, which Kahler said was the most important portion to have up and running. Additionally, concrete has been poured and walls starting to come up on the track's media center (near the last turn). 2014 Tesla Model X All-Electric Gullwing SUV
2014 Tesla Model X
“We’ve got a rocketship next door, and you know as Governor Moonbeam that I like rocketships,” quipped California Governor Jerry Brown, at the introduction of the upcoming 2014 Tesla Model S, gesturing toward the big SpaceX facility next door to Tesla’s Southern California Design Center. “But I also like electric cars.”

Just as Brown has (especially in earlier days) been a political idealist and outlier, Tesla is boldly forging itself a following (and a market), and plenty of interest from the affluent green set, whether or not the mainstream is ready to jump aboard yet.

Falcon wings, faster than a 911

The new, all-electric Tesla Model X crossover, which was introduced on stage by Tesla CEO Elon Musk (also the man behind SpaceX), isn’t exactly a step toward the mass market. But it does take on premium utility vehicles with three rows of seating for up to seven, better maneuverability than a Mini Cooper, and a 0-60 mph time of just 4.4 seconds—that’s faster than a Porsche 911, Musk jeered. Michael Andretti's ORG Garage Makeover Delivers Winning Style
For legendary race car driver and team owner Michael Andretti, cars have always been the focal point of life. So it only makes sense that his garage should have the showroom style to become a focal point of his home. When it comes to racing, running a business, and providing for his family, nothing less than the best will do for Andretti. That's why he turned to ORG home organization, a division of The Stow Company recognized as a leading provider of garage and interior storage solutions, to give his garage the winning style the Andrettis love to come home to.

Lack of efficient organization was one of the driving forces behind Andretti's desire to revamp his garage. "Our garage was a mess, and our stuff was all over the place. Not only did we need to get our things in order, we wanted to do it with style. It was important to me and my wife, Jodi, that our garage could reflect the same level of style as the rest of our home," said Michael Andretti, president and CEO of Andretti Autosport, and Celebrity Apprentice cast member. Most disliked American race driver
Dislike: 42%. Busch’s temper tantrums - he’s chewed out teammates and his crew chief – led to a divorce from Penske Racing.
The results of a Forbes poll of America's Most Disliked Athletes includes one race car driver: Kurt Busch at No. 10.

NFL quarterback Michael Vick and golfer Tiger Woods tied at the top spot in the poll. About 60 percent of respondents disliked Vick, but more people expressed a strong dislike for Vick compared with Woods.

The survey was conducted by Nielsen and E-Poll Market Research. Scores were derived from the total percentage of fans whose views of athletes was "dislike, "dislike a lot" or "dislike somewhat."

The field is limited to those registering at least 10 percent awareness with the general public.

Busch's score came in at 42 percent.

Since Busch was the only race car driver to crack the poll, he unofficially picks up the title of Racing's most disliked driver. At least for the time being. The full poll at Forbes.com.

NASCAR Hall of Fame losses are slowing  Attendance at the NASCAR Hall of Fame in December was 15,428 people, down only slightly from the 16,136 people who visited in December 2010. The December attendance was good news for the hall, which had seen attendance decline in some months by more than 30% compared with the same periods a year earlier. Hall spokesperson Kimberly Meesters said the week after Christmas is a strong period for the hall. A year ago, the "UnDeck the Hall" promotion, in which visitors can take ornaments and other items off of Christmas trees, lasted three days. "This year all items were gone within hours," Meesters said. The hall lost money in December, but the loss was smaller than a year earlier. In December the hall lost $242,485. A reimbursement for maintenance costs from the city of Charlotte reduced the deficit to $171,882. A year earlier, in December 2010, the hall lost $327,000. For the first six months of the fiscal year, the hall has lost $767,725. Reimbursements from the city have closed that loss to $440,000. Charlotte Observer

NASCAR team races for Israel  Two Charlotte men are putting their passion for American-Israeli relations on the hood of a Daytona 500 stock car. The #49 "America Israel Racing" Toyota is owned by Robinson-Blakeney Racing and driven by J.J. Yeley. Friends Rich Shirey and Mark MacCaull said they came up with the idea for America Israel Racing at their daughters' horse show in late 2011. Shirey said they wanted to find a way to educate the public about the relationship between the United States and its Middle Eastern ally. They decided NASCAR seemed the best fit. "NASCAR is the only sport televised where they pray before every race," said MacCaull, who has a background in the sport. "They are aligned with racing, religion and patriotism. We do not want to profit from this. Our goal is simply to educate people." It's an unusual - and expensive - textbook. The friends funded the car for the Daytona 500 completely on their own. A basic full-car sponsorship can come in at around $10 million. "It isn't cheap," said Shirey. "But being brought up Southern Baptist, I was always taught we stand behind Israel. This is a way I felt I could give back to society. It's something I believe in." Both Shirey and MacCaull said they know that belief is controversial to some, but insisted this is not politically motivated. The team said it hopes to run the entire schedule, but would need financial assistance to go beyond the first few races.  WCNC.com

FIA urged to cancel Bahrain GP  Seven members of the UK House of Lords and a leading MP have called on the FIA to cancel this year's Bahrain Grand Prix.

In a letter to The Times, Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, Lord Ahmed of Rotherham, Lord Alton, Lord Avebury, Lord Hylton, Lord Boswell, Baroness Falkner of Margravine and Green Party leader Caroline Lucas collectively voiced their opposition to the island kingdom staging the race on April 22.

Approaching the anniversary of the February 14 'Day of Rage' in Bahrain last year, when protesters took to the streets in a bid to oust the ruling government, the eight-strong group claims violence remains rife in the Gulf state and has called on world motor sport's governing body to act. More ...

IndyCar awaits Barrichello's decision  UPDATE IndyCar could use some positive news in 2012 after the departure of its most popular driver, Danica Patrick, to NASCAR and the death of its 2011 Indy 500 winner, Dan Wheldon, in the series' final race.

It may get that boost if popular Brazilian racer Rubens Barrichello decides to leave behind his 19-year Formula One career for the American open-wheel series.

The 11-time Grand Prix winner may not be well known in the United States, but he's widely popular around the world. He has 1.4 million Twitter followers. That's nearly a million more than Patrick, who was a somewhat polarizing figure during her seven-year tenure.

Barrichello, an ironman in Formula One with 322 starts, was let go by the Williams team last month. More ...

Chrysler/Clint Eastwood Detroit Super Bowl Ad  UPDATE Well it looks like Obama supporters did indeed have a hand in creation of the ad if you read the links below.  Even Clint Eastwood was duped.  Although he claims to have had no hidden agenda, the people who wrote the words he spoke apparently did.  Even Chrysler was duped, claiming they had no political agenda despite being bailed out by the Obama Administration.  If these accusations are true, it's sad to see politics taint what could have been a powerful message for Detroit. Schumacher says Wheldon would have been safer with Canopy  UPDATE
Schumacher says Dan Wheldon would have been safer if IndyCar's had canopies, something AR1.com recommended after Wheldon was killed.  Like NASCAR (Who had to lose both Adam Petty and Dale Earnhardt before they approved the HANS Device), IndyCar will have to lose another star before it takes any action.
Mark Rebilas/USPresswire
The NHRA plans to use an independent group, possibly Purdue University, to test the aerodynamics of the canopy. NHRA Safety Safari officials will look at the enclosure this weekend at Pomona to make sure it can be easily opened to extract a driver in case of a fire.

Tony Schumacher said all those scenarios, including air pressure in the canopy, have been considered. The enclosure actually is a section of the car's body sheet that fits over the driver compartment. The canopy, which is made of Kevlar and carbon fiber, can be opened from inside or outside.

Schumacher actually approaches the starting line with the canopy open. It is closed before staging.

Schumacher also believes that this type of canopy should be considered by the IndyCar Series in response to Dan Wheldon's death in October at Las Vegas.

"Would Wheldon have been safer with it? I would bet by far, yes,'' Schumacher said. "But it's a bet.

“The fact is I feel safer under it. When I sit in this car with the canopy, I have a level of comfort that I haven't had in a long time. Every driver should have that feeling. I've lost some good friends out here and don't want to lose any more.” More ...

Jerez Day 2: Schumacher stays on top.
Michael Schumacher in last year's car was fastest, so it means nothing
Michael Schumacher led the second day of Formula 1's pre-season test at Jerez in last year's Mercedes but Mark Webber was the best of 2012 cars for Red Bull after the Australian set the early pace before Schumacher stole the limelight with a series of blistering laps.

Daniel Ricciardo was the only other man under the 1:20 mark in third with yesterday's pacesetter Kimi Raikkonen fifth after an early off to end up behind Force India reserve Jules Bianchi.

Jenson Button was seventh on the day in McLaren's MP4-27 after being leapfrogged by Felipe Massa's Ferrari as the team focused on aerodynamic and set-up rather than lap times.
