SportsData Strikes NASCAR Deal, Becomes First To Shop Out Sanctioning Body's Stats
NASCAR revealed an agreement it has struck with SportsData that will allow the stat-tracking company to shop the sanctioning body's race statistics out to third-party sites. NASCAR previously had kept the stats in house and only made them available to fans on its official website, meaning this will be the first time a content provider has gone to market with the sanctioning body's data. SportsData Founder & President Rob Phythian this morning would not reveal the structure of the deal beyond calling it "very traditional."

Deals of this nature typically entail a content provider paying the sanctioning body for the rights to its statistics. This sort of information most prominently includes who is leading the race and by how much in real time. Phythian, whose company began meeting with NASCAR about a possible deal last fall, said of why he thinks the sanctioning body chose to begin allowing its statistics to appear on third-party outlets, "Their strategy had been very internally focused, really building out their digital properties. … (But) Twitter broke down a lot of barriers. With that form of communication, there's been an acceptance of the way digital media was consumed content-wise, and it's just not in a walled garden." Adam Stern/SportsBusiness Daily

@MarcoAndretti: "Had to bow out of the Miami @FIAformulaE race due to a schedule conflict. Bummer."

Scuderia Ferrari test driver Jean-Eric Vergne is expected to be in one of the Andretti cars in Miami. Thus far, no word on who Vergne's teammate might be in what has been a revolving door of drivers thus far for the Andretti Formula E team.

City may seek voter approval of financial incentives for potential racetrack near Denver
An Aurora racetrack has been unthinkable for years thanks to a rule that prohibits the city from offering financial incentives to a racetrack developer. That could finally change.

The ordinance, which dates back to 1999, does the city no favors, says Councilwoman Sally Mounier. That's why she is proposing a referendum for the 2016 election that would ask Aurora voters to repeal the rule.

Mounier said she's not motivated to put the issue on the ballot because she's been approached by a developer about a potential raceway in the city.

Marussia F1 Made "Duress Payments" To Recover Seized Assets
This article by Christian Sylt of Forbes.com outlines what a complete financial mess the Marussia (now Manor) F1 team is.  How they could even think about returning to F1 is beyond reason.

Astonishing details have come to light about the scale of turmoil at the Marussia Formula One team which led to it hitting the wall last year owing $97.5 million.

Marussia is currently fighting for a place on the 2015 F1 grid after going into administration, the British equivalent of Chapter 11 bankruptcy, in October. It missed the last three races of the season and in December its administrators, FRP Advisory, released a detailed report lifting the lid on its financial position. Buried amongst its pages is the revelation that not only had unpaid creditors claimed assets from the team's operating company, Manor Grand Prix Racing (MGPR), but they demanded payments in return for handing them over.

Dani Pedrosa: "We are very satisfied"
Pedrosa testing at Sepang
After the first test in Malaysia, the Repsol Honda Team rider makes a very positive analysis of the three working days that marked the return from the winter break. Second by only one tenth of a second to his teammate at the test, Dani Pedrosa returned to action in top form. His lap times confirmed the good feeling he has about the work done by Honda and the changes to his crew.

How do you rate the first test in Sepang?
"It went very well. The last day we made complete race simulation, despite the heat there. Overall we were lucky, because the sky was a little more cloudy than usual and that meant the track was in good condition to ride. We must also say that on Friday morning the track was very good and the lap times came down by a lot. I made a small mistake on my best lap. Still, we are very pleased with how the first test of the year went."

Technology expected to improve NASCAR inspections this season
NASCAR inspection station
Up until last September, the only way for NASCAR officials to tell how quickly the inspection process was moving was to walk to each inspection station and see for themselves. No more. As in so many areas of life these days, there's an app for that. At the start of the Chase for the Sprint Cup, NASCAR unveiled a technology that lets officials see whether inspection is running on schedule thanks to a real-time app created by Microsoft. Using a tablet device in the NASCAR hauler office, Sprint Cup Series director Richard Buck can monitor each inspection station, see which cars have been tagged for infractions and track the individual progress for each car.

For example: With a couple of taps on the screen, Buck can learn that 48% of the cars have completed inspection and there have been five infractions (a fender or a side skirt that isn't quite within the tolerances, for example). If he wants to get more information, he can click on the number to see which cars have run afoul of the rules and why.

NASCAR fans will get first look at Daytona changes during Speedweeks
View from the inside of the track
DAYTONA BEACH - It's a common marketing tool used for any type of renovation project. The "Before and After" photo is basic stuff.

Far from common, however, is an opportunity to see the "Before and After" simultaneously as it folds and unfolds.

At Daytona International Speedway, no one has to produce giant, glitzy, colorful renderings of what's ahead for race fans in 2016 and beyond. Over the next couple of weeks, they'll be able to see it - at least enough of it to draw an undeniable image - in all of its steel-enforced, towering, sprawling expanse.

Ironically, all of that steel and concrete is stretched and poured in the name of comfort.

Derrick Walker defends promotion of Brian Barnhart
Walker defends appointment of Barnhart
When IndyCar President of Competition and Operations Derrick Walker decided to name Brian Barnhart as Race Director he knew the announcement would draw criticism. He was shocked, however, at just how loud that outcry would become.

"I'm not surprised by the reaction; maybe I'm surprised by the volume," Walker told FOXSports.com. "I anticipated and said so internally here at IndyCar there will be some pushback by some of the fans. ... We've had some fans that want to criticize us but everybody has the right to speak their mind -- us included."

"If you go back to last year Brian was a part of our Race Control," Walker said. "He acted as a steward and assisted Beaux Barfield in running the race events. He was part of the support team. There are a dozen people in Race Control and they all do different jobs but they are all part of the whole process making the calls.
