Sign Mario Andretti petition to receive Presidential Medal of Freedom
Mario Andretti
The license plate on Jim Knipe's car reads "69 INDY."

Last year, he said, Mario Andretti autographed the plate for him.

"I'm a pretty heavy-duty Mario Andretti fan," Knipe, a 58-year-old Bethlehem resident, said this week.

Considering that it has been more than 20 years since Andretti drove his final IndyCar series race, the fact that Knipe still has such a passionate interest in the 1967 Daytona 500 winner, 1969 Indianapolis 500 winner, 1978 Formula One world champion and four-time Indy-car national champion is beyond commendable.

But this week, Knipe has taken that passion to another level.

Engine boss thinks Mercedes' rivals can catch up
(GMM)  Dominant 2014 champion Mercedes thinks its rivals can catch up.

Germany's authoritative Auto Motor und Sport on Thursday estimated the marque's advantage last year at as much as 60 horse power.

Many believe that is too great a gap to bridge in just one winter, but Renault has worked hard on its structure and engine, Ferrari set the test pace at Jerez and newcomer Honda is famous for having dominated F1 in the 80s.

Mercedes engine boss Andy Cowell agrees: "The rules of physics and chemistry are the same for us all.

Ganassi engineer Kate Gundlach speaks to Boy Scouts
In week two of 24-Hour News 8's Indy Trailblazers series, we take a look at one of the only female engineers in IndyCar.

Women working behind the scenes of IndyCar are few are far between that's what makes Ganassi engineer Kate Gundlach so special. She's one of only a few female engineers on the circuit and the only one helping call the shots on the timing stand for Charlie Kimball's No. 83 car.

"Kate's the one that I ask about drive styles, the comparisons she sees in the data," said Kimball. "She's the one that looks at where I'm losing time, where I'm making time."

F1: Americans like a good parade
Even while Formula One's television audience drops overall, it managed to grow in the U.S. by 10.1% to 12.6 million viewers last year, according to the sport's recently released annual media report (meaning Americans like to watch a parade - the Mercedes 1-2 runaway parade).

The report also showed that the number of viewers in the U.S. who watched between four and nine races last year increased by 128% while those who watched 10 or more doubled. It adds that NBC Sports Network, which carries the series, "recorded year-on-year increases for every single round shown. On average each race shown on NBCSN attracted 85% more viewers this season when compared to 2013."

The Canadian Grand Prix, which aired on the main NBC station, drew 3.5 million unique viewers, using the industry-standard measurement of anyone who watched at least 15 non-consecutive minutes of the sport.

Rahal fastest Honda on Day 2 at NOLA
Rahal fastest of the Honda runners
Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing completed a two day test with Graham Rahal today at the 2.67-mile NOLA Motorsports Park road course. Rahal completed 96 laps today for a two day total of 187 laps at the course.

"We had a great day overall today," said Rahal. "We learned a lot of stuff and worked on a lot of things that we've been needing to work on so it was a productive day that sends us off on a good note. When we come back here in three weeks time we will have a very different car than what we had today since we will be running with the new aero kit but to end up as the fastest Honda felt nice. Most of all though we got a lot of work done."

For their next test, the team is scheduled to return to NOLA on March 14 before taking part in the series-wide open test at Barber Motorsports Park March 16-17.

The 'Mickyard' to close
The first ever IRL race was at Disney World Speedway in 1996.  It was the beginning of the destruction of IndyCar racing.
This Orlando Sentinel article says the Richard Petty Driving Experience at Walt Disney World Speedway, site of the first ever Indy Racing League race January 27, 1996 will close in June.

The reasons given for the closure were vague. Bill Scott executive vice president of Petty Holdings, LLC said that there were transportation issues at Walt Disney World which prompted the decision to close the Speedway. The Richard Petty Driving Experience will apparently look for another home in the Orlando area.

From the drivers' viewpoint, lap times on the flowing and flat 2.67-mile road course are quick and they expect considerably faster speeds when the Verizon IndyCar Series returns with new aerodynamic bodywork kits for the inaugural Indy Grand Prix of Louisiana on April 10-12.

Chicagoland Promotion Offers Full Refund If Dale Jr. Wins Daytona 500
Chicagoland Speedway this afternoon will announce a promotion where any fan who purchases an A-I section ticket to Chicagoland's Sept. 20 Sprint Cup race before the Daytona 500 on Feb. 22 will receive a full refund if Dale Earnhardt Jr. wins the 500. The promotion, which features price points between $85-180, starts today and ends at 1:00pm ET on the day of the Daytona 500.

Chicagoland VP/Sales & Marketing Communications Scott Howard said that track execs decided to institute the promotion about six weeks ago, and did so for three reasons: To localize and capitalize on the buzz around the Daytona 500; to jump-start ticket sales early since many fans often purchase tickets much closer to Chicagoland's race date; and to try to encourage fans to up-spend since they might feel it is worth the gamble given the potential reward.

Audi driver Treluyer opens sports chalet
Ingolstadt – Audi factory driver Benoit Treluyer has opened a sports chalet in the French ski resort Les Deux Alpes south-east of Grenoble where he doesn't only keep himself physically fit for the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) – guests are welcome too.

"Everything's got to go – this is how the 2012 World Endurance Champion describes his stipulation for the conversion of the chalet. The Audi driver bought the house last year and had it gutted completely. Together with his wife Melanie he subsequently drove the plans for a combined residential and sports facility forward.

"I had the idea because I was looking for such a facility for a long time myself," says the Frenchman. "The environment was to be functional as well as exuding warmth. It was to be comfortable, but without luxury."

IndyCar Series drivers eager to race inaugural Grand Prix of Louisiana

The inaugural IndyCar Series event is April 10-12 - tickets are available now - and six participating teams got a head start by test-driving their cars around the Avondale track on a sun-splashed Tuesday afternoon.

The debut race comes about a month before the 99th Indianapolis 500 (May 24), and three-time champion Helio Castroneves said the fast track in New Orleans brings benefits and challenges.

"It's certainly going to be a fast pace ... I'm very glad to be here," said Castroneves, on Team Penske with Juan Pablo Montoya, Will Power and Simon Pagenaud. "There's no elevation, which creates the challenge of a point of reference.

Donington Park won't host 2015 MotoGP (Update) UPDATE The future of Britain's motorcycle grand prix has been "thrown into doubt after officials at Donington Park walked away from a deal to keep the event safe until it is moved to a planned new track in Wales," according to Kevin Eason of the LONDON TIMES.

An announcement on Tuesday "also casts into doubt the viability of the Circuit of Wales, which was due to open next year" but which has been at the center of controversy "since it was first mooted." The Circuit of Wales "snatched the contract" for the Moto GP British Grand Prix from Silverstone, which was attracting more than 75,000 fans each summer to the Northamptonshire circuit. However, there appears to have been "little progress in construction of the new circuit on a greenfield site near Ebbw Vale, amid planning wrangles and complaints from environmentalists."

Rahal calls NOLA track 'fast and physical'
Graham Rahal joined the majority of the 2015 Verizon IndyCar Series field today at a test at NOLA Motorsports Park, the track that will host the inaugural Grand Prix of Louisiana April 10-12.  Like most other drivers, it was Rahal's first time on the course in an Indy car although the 26-year-old visited the track in May 2014 during a media tour to promote the Indianapolis 500. Many changes have been made since then.

"It's great to be here, it's a cool track to drive on," said Rahal who completed 91 laps on the 2.67-mile road course. "It's fast and its physical. We had a great day out here testing. We have to find some more speed but we're pretty close. At a place like this that is so high speed, a little tweak here or there can make a big difference as we found today. We're sneaking up on it and, as a group, we're all in the ballpark. Maybe some people hit their new tire run better than others but everybody we clocked time wise is all within a couple of tenths (of a second).

The pair has been one of NASCAR's most famous -- and longest standing -- driver-crew chief combinations for the past 13 years. So what if Knaus had been paired with a different driver? Say, Johnson's teammate -- Jeff Gordon.

(Feb. 10, 2015) - JR Motorsports announced today the addition of Anderson's Pure Maple Syrup to its 2015 partner lineup in the NASCAR XFINITY Series.  Made and marketed by the same Wisconsin family since 1928, Anderson's Pure Maple Syrup will be featured as primary sponsor of Regan Smith's No. 7 Chevrolet in races at Charlotte Motor Speedway (May 23) and New Hampshire Motor Speedway (July 18).

"Anderson's Pure Maple Syrup is, like JR Motorsports, a family company," said JRM co-owner and general manager Kelley Earnhardt Miller. "We share a lot of the same values and that makes for an ideal partnership in the XFINITY Series.  We are proud to carry Anderson's colors in 2015 as Regan and the No. 7 team compete for the series title."

Watch the full 'Furious 7' trailer
Universal Studios has released a full-length theatrical trailer for "Furious 7," after a shorter spot was featured during the Super Bowl. The latest installment in the "Fast & Furious" franchise was originally planned for a July 2014 release, but the death of Paul Walker, one of the stars, forced a script rewrite and the use of cutting-edge CGI technologies to re-create a number of scenes with Walker's character.

The producers brought in Peter Jackson's digital-effects company, Weta Digital, along with Walker's brothers Caleb and Cody, to help re-create some of the needed scenes in the revised script. The production also took advantage of some unused footage with Walker from previous "Fast & Furious" films for a number of the needed scenes.
