Bowyer rips new Daytona 500 qualifying format
Bowyer, Sorenson and other wreck on Sunday

Bowyer and Sorenson tangled in the first round (group A) of qualifying for the Daytona 500 Sprint Cup Series race at Daytona International Speedway on Sunday, triggering a wreck that destroyed both cars as well as damaging Labonte, Hamlin and Yeley. Bowyer made some comments about the new qualifying format:

Q) What happened in the accident?
Bowyer: "First of all I wasn't behind the 44 (Reed Sorenson), he came flying around and came up on the apron, jumped up in front of me and then runs over the 51 (Justin Allgaier), stacks us all up and I run into him. It's idiotic to be out here doing this anyway. It makes no sense in being able to put on some cute show for whatever the hell this is, then you have a guy out there in desperation doing this crap like this. There's no reason to be out here. These guys have spent six months working on these cars, busting their asses on these cars to go out there and have some guy out of desperation do that crap, but it ain't his fault. It's not, it's NASCAR's fault for putting us out here in the middle of this crap for nothing. We used to come down here and worry about who was going to sit on the front row and the pole for the biggest race of the year and now all we do is come down here and worry about how a start-and-park like this out of desperation is going to knock us out of the Daytona 500. We've been in meetings for 45 minutes just trying to figure out what in the hell everybody is going to do just so we can make the race. There's no sense in doing this."

Earnhardt and Hamlin fail post qualifying inspection
The cars of 2014 Daytona 500 winner Dale Earnhardt, Jr. and Denny Hamlin both failed post-qualifying inspections for today's Coors Light Daytona 500 Qualifying. The #88 Nationwide Chevrolet of Earnhardt did not meet minimum height requirements, while the #11 FedEx Toyota exceeded the track bar split by 0.75 inches.

Both drivers will need to go to the back of their respective duel races in Thursday's Budweiser Duel at Daytona. Earnhardt earned the fifth grid position for Race 2, while Hamlin was on the outside of the first row for Race 1.

Toyota Daytona qualifying quote board
Denny Hamlin was the fastest Toyota driver in today's qualifying session
DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FedEx Express Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
Qualified:  3rd

Did the qualifying work out as you expected?

"That worked out exactly as I thought it would. I was trying to back up to zero time, I wanted to be the last one to cross the line so I had points on the race track that I knew I needed to be at and I tried to back up to the 24 (Jeff Gordon) and 48 (Jimmie Johnson) to where they would miss it, but with the draft it picked up the speed and I allowed them to cross the line before it went zero."

What did you think of the group qualifying for the Daytona 500?

"There's going to be a lot of unfavorable talk about it for sure. It can get dangerous when different cars are on different agendas and speeds. We're either going to have to get better and smarter or it will have to change to make it a little bit safer. Other than that, we all knew for months that this was going to be the case. You tried to do the best you could."

Newman changes engine
Ryan Newman

Richard Childress Racing has changed the engine in Ryan Newman’s #31 Caterpillar Chevrolet. By our understanding of the rules, the engine change means Newman will start Thursday's Budweiser Duel race at the rear of the field. Newman is also ineligible to win pole position for The Great American Race in today's Coors Light Daytona 500 pole qualifying.

However, Newman will still participate in today's knockout qualifying session, as his qualifying time will still count towards his grid position. Keep in mind, Daytona 500 positions 33-36 are awarded to the 4 fastest qualifiers who do not secure positions 1 and 2 in knockout qualifying or positions 3-32, by virtue of finishing top-15 in their respective duels.

Newman does have the luxury of being 'locked in' to the Daytona 500 field. Positions 37-42 are filled by top finishers in entrant points from 2014, and the #31 RCR finished second in the 2014 entrant standings.

Toyota Sprint Unlimited quote board
Matt Kenseth scores another win at Daytona
MATT KENSETH, No. 20 Dollar General Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
Finishing Position:  1st

How does it feel to kick off Daytona with a victory?

"This is a great feeling. It's always fun to win at Daytona for sure – it's fun to win anywhere. Just really proud of this whole team at JGR (Joe Gibbs Racing) – a lot of new additions this year with Carl (Edwards) and a lot of great personnel at the shop. Everybody has been working hard and all four of our cars were really fast yesterday. I had a feeling that it was going to be a good week. We have a lot of racing left to do, but all our cars have speed, which is the first thing we look for. We have to thank Toyota and TRD (Toyota Racing Development) for all the power and of course our great sponsors – Dollar General, Dewalt and all the great partners that make this all happen."

How were you able to pull away from second-place in the closing laps?

Tony Stewart cusses out NASCAR officials after getting black flagged
Tony Stewart
Tony Stewart
It only took one day into the 2015 season for NASCAR to start handing out punishments. During the first NASCAR practice of the year, race officials black flagged Tony Stewart for failing to weigh in Friday at Daytona International Speedway.

While Stewart was on the track, NASCAR ordered Stewart, Denny Hamlin and Kyle Busch to return to the garage to be weighed, a preseason mandate. Hamlin and Busch obeyed.

Stewart stayed on the track, ignoring the instruction.

Kasemets and Lall Cap off Palm Beach Weekend with Victories
Kasemets wins in the old Champ Car Swift Atlantic car. To this day even the Atlantic cars look better than the current IndyCars
It was Tonis Kasemets and Quinlan Lall coming out as winners after three separate races during the Palm Beach Grand Prix on Saturday afternoon. Kasemets took victories in both the F1600 Formula F Championship Series and Atlantic races, while Lall led every lap in the F2000 race at Palm Beach International Raceway.

F1600

Tonis Kasemets showed off his diverse racing skill set by winning the F1600 Formula F Championship Series race against the latest of aspiring talents. Kasemets, from Estonia, took the lead from pole before dropping back to third as aggressive racing took place at the front. When those cars made contact, Kasemets found himself back in the lead in the Polestar Spectrum/Honda and went on to take the victory.

“Neither win was easy,” said Kasemets. “The Formula F win was more work, and the Atlantic race was a different kind of driving. Winning both is fantastic.”

Tony Stewart says team has contingency plan for Kurt Busch
Tony Stewart
Tony Stewart
Three-time Sprint Cup champ Tony Stewart said Stewart-Haas Racing has a contingency plan if Kurt Busch’s legal issues with his ex-girlfriend Patricia Driscoll should force the driver from the No. 41 Chevrolet.

Driscoll has accused Busch of assaulting her. Busch and Driscoll have been in court and the case remains unresolved.

“We do (have a contingency plan), but we’re kind of waiting to see,” said Stewart, who co-owns the Cup Series team with Gene Haas. “I’m very hopeful we won’t have to worry about it. I feel bad that they are both in that situation right now. We have to be smart, and we have to have a plan in place.”

Stewart said he didn’t expect the legal wrangling between Driscoll and Busch from last year to stretch into the 2015 Cup season.

“No, not at all,” Stewart said. “This has definitely been a surprise.”

Carlin adds Gilbert to GP3 lineup
Mitch Gilbert will join reigning champions Carlin for the 2015 GP3 Series.  The Australian, who raced in GP3 last season, stays in the F1 support series and joins already announced driver Antonio Fuoco at Carlin.

Gilbert graduated from karting in 2010, since then competing in Formula Renault 2.0, German F3, FIA Formula 3 European Championship and a part season in GP3 Series last year.  The 20 year-old, who was born in Malaysia to Australian parents is determined to make the most of his 2015 season with Carlin.

"The last two years haven't been the best for me", said Gilbert.  "I always felt like it was right place wrong time, wrong place, right time; for some reason things just didn't line up right. Now I feel like everything is coming together to show everyone what the last two years couldn't.  I feel like this is my chance to start afresh.  There's seriously unfinished business and this is the right time for things to come together in a positive way."

Trevor Carlin added, "We're very pleased to have Mitch joining us for GP3.  He was very impressive in the GP3 tests in Abu Dhabi at the end of the last season and it's clear that for whatever reason he hasn't achieved his potential over the last couple of years.   Mitch has spent quite a lot of time in the factory over the last few weeks, preparing with the team and completing sessions on the sim and it's quite clear that he's fitting in well and is extremely determined and focused.  We're excited to see him progress in a Carlin car when pre-season testing gets underway."

The GP3 teams will be out on track March when the first test of the season gets underway in Estoril, Portugal.

Patrick concerned about Daytona qualifying
Danica Patrick admits qualifying for the Daytona 500 is no guarantee
(Editor's note: Numerous drivers have admitted they are concerned about qualifying for this year's Daytona 500, given the removal of the top-35 provisionals, and new group qualifying. You might remember last fall at Talladega, Ricky Stenhouse, Jr. failed to qualify for the Geico 500. In this Sporting News article, Stenhouse's girlfriend Danica Patrick admits she is concerned about the possibility of missing the race.)

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — Danica Patrick was thrust into the national spotlight in 2013 when she won the pole for the Daytona 500 as a Sprint Cup rookie.

Two years later, Patrick is worried about just making the race going into this year's Daytona 500.

She backed up her strong qualifying run in 2013 with an eighth-place finish in the race after running in the top five all day.

Renault 'not solely to blame' for 2014 - Lopez
2014 Renault engine
(GMM)  It is clear there is little love lost between Lotus and its former engine supplier.

The Enstone team, fourth overall in 2012 and 2013, slumped to an horror eighth in the constructors' standings last year.

Owner Gerard Lopez does not entirely blame Renault, but he is hopeful a much brighter future awaits with new customer Mercedes power.

"Our new Mercedes engine will make the difference," the Luxembourger told France's Auto Hebdo, "although Renault was not solely to blame for the disastrous 2014 season."

NASCAR no longer regulating minimum air pressure requirements
NASCAR will not regulate minimum air pressure requirements this season, giving crew chiefs more control of how little they put in their tires but also increasing the risk of a blowout. Goodyear will continue to provide teams with a minimum tire pressure recommendation.

Previously, NASCAR mandated the right front tire pressure and, in some cases, left-front tires. Now, it is up to teams to determine how low they inflate their tires. Robin Pemberton, senior vice president of competition, said NASCAR is allowing teams to police themselves in this area. "With Goodyear constantly working on their communications with the teams on tire durability, it's putting it in the team's hands for different strategies,'' he told NASCAR Talk Friday at Daytona International Speedway. "How low they think they can go.''

Renault are hoping their chances of closing the gap to Mercedes will be boosted by new consultant Mario Illien.

Illien as Ilmor Engineering first entered F1 back in 1989 before going on to form a partnership with Mercedes-Benz.

That partnership teamed up with McLaren, winning grands prix and World titles.

Illien's engine company is now back in Formula 1 helping Renault in their bid to claw back Mercedes' engine advantage.

"Mario is an opportunity to benchmark what we are doing," Renault F1's managing director Cyril Abiteboul told Autosport.

Verstappen rated very highly by engineer
Max Verstappen

Max Verstappen's Race Engineer, Xevi Pujolar, has described the Dutch youngster as the best he has ever worked with in Formula 1, as preparations ramp up for his debut campaign at Toro Rosso.

Verstappen got his first taste of the team's new STR10 during last week's Jerez test, following a series of free practice outings at the end of last season, and private test outings over the winter.

From their time together so far, Pujolar - who has previously worked with the likes of Mark Webber, Juan Pablo Montoya and Eddie Irvine - says 17-year-old Verstappen sits at the top of the list.
