Indiana Motorsports Association runs out of gas
After a nine-year run, the Indiana Motorsports Association is out of gas.

The IMA folded late last year after Executive Director Tom Weisenbach found a new job.

Weisenbach conceded that membership had stagnated.

“Financially, it just wasn’t viable. In the end, I had some other opportunities and the board decided to shut down,” said Weisenbach, adding that he can’t say where he’s headed until his new motorsports employer completes an acquisition late this month. “We’re all disappointed, but in the end, it’s the right move for everyone.”

Indy Media Day notes
AutoRacing1 reporter Tim Wohlford hard at work during INDYCAR Media Day
Marco Andretti caught himself "sounding like a team owner." Well, this is his 10th Indy season coming up, and I poked some fun at him noting that he's almost the old man of Andretti Autosport. He says that Ryan Hunter-Reay still has him covered though. But most of us remember this guy back in the day when he still didn't need to shave much.

IndyCar head honcho Mark Miles could've easily filled up another hour with things he wanted to say. He took time to explain to IndyCar fans that IndyCar is not shortening the season, just shifting it to a February (weekend after Superbowl) thru Labor Day. The trouble is, of course, that the early races are a work in progress. Ultimately, he wants 20 races total, and they're at 17 now. IndyCar is looking for a solid event for Labor Day weekend, preferably something near a major urban area (which kinda rules out Road America), and presumably someplace where they can build "Date Equity." He also figures that 2 "International" dates will be needed to fill out the early schedule, if for no other reason that climate considerations. At that point, adding new North American venues will usually involve another venue losing its date.

Chevy Aero Unveiled -- it's, uh.....
Chevy Aero kit makes the ugly Dallara look better
Ya know how beautiful the classic Indy / CART / CCWS cars were back in the day? You know, the '72 McLaren, the Lotus 38, the DP01, the new Indy Lights car? Well, this isn't any one of those cars. The new Chevy road / short oval package was unveiled today at Indy, and it's, uh... well, there will be discussion. Let's just say that it definitely fits the bill for Indy's goal of increasing creativity.

The Chevy guys talk about "Form and Function". Well, this is FUNCTION with a bit paint for form. You have bits sticking up -- "Front Uppers" (which does sound like a Linda Vaughn "Miss Hurst" thing, doesn't it?) and "Inboard fences" and "Flicks" and such. The carbon bits are sticking up all over the place on this thing. Oh, and the rear "Kardashian" bumpers are larger too, in case you were wondering -- it's an aero thing.

Chevrolet New IndyCar 'Aero Kit' revealed (Update) UPDATE
Here is the first official photo of the Chevy Aero Package for Road and Street circuits unveiled today during IndyCar's media day.

01/27/15 Chevrolet has submitted their design for IndyCar's new 'Aero Kits' the series is introducing this year, Fox Sports reports. IndyCar officials received both Honda's and Chevrolet's plans for the kits on January 18, and will now review their designs before approving them for use in this year's race events.

Once the kits are approved, they will be sent out piece by piece to the different IndyCar teams. There are different kits for the road/street courses and ovals, and they will also come with different component options which they will be able to add or remove to tailor car's set-up based on the track. They won't be used in the series' opener at Brasilia in Brazil on March 8, however the cars will have the kits on for the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg starting on March 27.

In its findings, revealed by Germany's Auto Motor und Sport, McKinsey has proposed new cost-cutting measures that could help teams like Force India, Sauber and Lotus - with budgets in the range of $120-$200 million - to survive and thrive.

God shines down on NASCAR
A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, So Jeff Gordon won the pole for the Daytona 500, or did he win in it January when he announced his retirement? Hell, I'll bet the t-shirts were already in Daytona so the Goobers can pounce by Tuesday. Can miss a buck or a feel good story. RJ Thompson

Dear RJ, Are you insinuating that NASCAR's grids are computer generated? Are you saying that rookie Loy Allen Jr's Daytona 500 pole in 1994, then never leading a lap, was determined by the pre-programmed NASCAR timing & scoring computers? Are you saying that when Dodge returned to NASCAR in 2001 their 1-2 start in the Daytona 500, then dropping to the back in the race, was fixed as a thank you for returning to the sport? Are you saying that Danica Patrick's pole in 2013 was a hoax to generate a week of free PR for NASCAR (ditto for Jeff Gordon this year)? Are you saying the 'chosen one' (Austin Dillon's) pole last year was generated by the NASCAR timing and scoring computers? Are you saying everything happens in NASCAR for a reason? NASCAR would never do that. God blesses NASCAR to help them get good PR and increase attendance and ratings. They pray before each race and that does not go unnoticed in his eyes. AR1 Staff

IMS still debating return of apron to help IndyCar's #1 enemy
Question: Any update from Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the plans to add the apron in the corners anytime this year or next? (Steve, Eden Prairie, Minn.)

Answer: It certainly won't be in place for the 2015 season, but track president Doug Boles said it continues to be an internal discussion point "if not weekly then certainly monthly." Boles said he doesn't think the return of the apron can make IndyCar racing better at IMS, but there are some who believe it will help the NASCAR race. However, if installed, Boles said "it calls into question how to use it in the (Indianapolis 500)."

NASCAR statement on Kurt Busch (2nd Update)
UPDATE Busch spoke at length about the legal proceedings last Thursday at the annual NASCAR Media Day at Daytona International Speedway, expressing at the time some mild frustration that the case entered its third month. Allegations of domestic assault brought by Busch's ex-girlfriend, Driscoll, first surfaced over 90 days ago.

"The days in court, and now that we're going close to Day 100 as far as all of the proceedings go, normal situations that happen around these type of situations take 30 minutes, so sometimes preferential treatment can go the wrong way," Busch said last week. "… So we all have to be patient, we all have to understand that there's a process that we have to respect."

"... And with the team and their support -- they've been fantastic, (team co-owner) Gene Haas especially -- it's amazing to have the comfort level that I have, as well as to have told them the truth and understanding of everything."

Bowyer said of the new format, which is different than its predecessor in that qualifying used to be done one car at a time, "It's idiotic to be out here doing this anyway. Pro Mazda: Latif joins World Speed Motorsports
(February 16th, 2015 Sonoma, CA) World Speed Motorsports announced today that Alessandro Latif will be joining their squad for the 2015 season. Latif is a young, but very experienced racer who has had success in karts, formula cars, sedans, and prototypes.

"We are excited to have Alessandro join us for the Pro Mazda Championship presented by Cooper Tires in 2015," stated WSM Team Owner Telo Stewart. "We have had a solid amount of testing and feel good about where we are going into the season. He still needs to learn the tracks and the series is very competitive, but we know we will do well this year with him in the #14 car World Speed Pro FM."

Alessandro has won at numerous club and international kart competitions over the world. When he was younger a conscious decision was made to focus on schooling, which meant that Alessandro often missed championship rounds. NASCAR caught in a qualifying quandary
In its constant battle to find the right recipe of entertainment and competition, NASCAR may be left with a bad taste when it comes to the debut of group qualifying for the Daytona 500.

Group qualifying – which features two or three rounds of cars running on the track at the same time – debuted last season, but at the time NASCAR elected to retain the traditional single-car qualifying runs for its most prestigious race.

As part of several competition changes for 2015, and based on feedback from its use at the July Daytona race and both races at Talladega, Ala., last season, NASCAR added the group format to Speedweeks.

NASCAR: no plans to fines drivers for comments about qualifying
An interview with Steve O'Donnell, NASCAR's chief racing development officer and executive vice president, some Q&A's about Sunday's qualifying for the Daytona 500:

STEVE O'DONNELL: I wanted to make a few comments on the qualifying session today. I think as everybody knows, this format was put together by NASCAR with feedback from the industry, but ultimately to be as exciting as possible. We used it last year in Daytona for the summer race. We made some adjustments from there. Going into Talladega, obviously learned throughout that. Then came into Daytona with some minor adjustments for the Daytona 500, as well. So if you look at group qualifying as a whole, we felt it worked really well, but certainly there's some challenges on superspeedways. One of the reasons we moved away from single-car qualifying, I think you've heard from the drivers as well, a lot of things go into it as well, aero packages, different setups, not based on a race setup. You also heard Jeff Gordon talk about putting it back in the drivers' hands more. That's something we like. We don't want to see wrecks of any kind. Not lost on us how much work goes into these cars by the teams, the efforts for our biggest race of the year. I close by saying I believe we've got a really good track record of making adjustments where we need to, so we'll certainly evaluate what took place today, we'll continue to get feedback from the industry, from the drivers as we did to get to where we were today. With that, I'm happy to take any questions anybody may have.
