Dangers of noise in NASCAR
Doctors hope dangers of race noise in NASCAR won't fall on deaf ears: Richard Petty loved nothing better than the piercing sound of a race engine. For 35 years the screaming sound helped propel him to a NASCAR record 200 victories and seven championships. But with each of his 307,836 career laps his ears were suffering irreversible damage. A man who used to race without goggles and gloves; a man who survived horrific, tumbling crashes; and, a man who, at 78, remains remarkably fit has one inescapable scar: He is deaf.

NASCAR's Highest-Paid Drivers
NASCAR has undergone big changes over the past decade with how the sport crowns a champion, sells its merchandise and broadcasts its races on TV. The latest overhaul is a "charter" system that transforms 36 Sprint Cup teams into franchises, with similarities to other sports leagues liked shared revenue.

The new system means adjustments to how drivers are paid. Drivers traditionally received a salary, as well as a percentage of the race purse winnings. But purse winnings will no longer be publicly released weekly with charter teams now guaranteed a certain amount of money annually distributed from a fund.

Will drivers earn extra from the new NASCAR Charter System?

Danica Patrick: "I hope it’s not just a big argue-fest because I’ve experienced in IndyCar"
NASCAR and team owners redrew the business model of their relationship. Now drivers are in the process of adjusting theirs.

As part of a so-called charter system in which 36 teams that met and can maintain participation requirements were granted access to each Sprint Cup race of a season, purse distribution was basically eliminated in favor of a weighted system and new money streams. Drivers, independent contractors whose deals contain incentives based on earnings which technically no longer exist, now must renegotiate the way they are compensated with their teams.

NASCAR told the driver council that the teams have all the financial information so they can ask questions and go over financials now.

Figures disagree over Wehrlein potential
Wehrlein comes from driving front-engine cars. How will he do in rear engine open wheel cars? Time will tell.
Over-hyped by the Germans, Wehrlein comes from driving front-engine closed cockpit cars. How will he do in rear engine open wheel cars? Time will tell.
(GMM) Two well-known motor racing figures disagree about the credentials of F1's newest rookie.

Former team owner turned broadcaster Eddie Jordan thinks Mercedes is nurturing a true "jewel" in the form of Pascal Wehrlein.

He told Sport Bild that it is not even a problem that Mercedes is 'paying' for Wehrlein's Manor debut this year.

"Even Michael Schumacher was a pay driver," Jordan told Sport Bild. "Mercedes and Sauber paid me a lot of money to let him drive my car, and without that support we might never have seen him in formula one."

But Jordan says Wehrlein, 21, fully deserves his F1 debut, as he is "the future of Mercedes in formula one".
