Audi, which has been caught up in parent Volkswagen Group's emissions-cheating scandal, has fired four engineers from its diesel division.

Audi's former chief of engine development, Ulrich Weiss, and the automaker's former head of emissions in the U.S., are among the engineers fired, Handelsblatt reported on Monday.

An Audi spokesman confirmed to Automotive News Europe the dismissal of four engineers including Weiss but declined to comment on the names of the other engineers. "The reason in all cases is gross breach of duty," the spokesman said.

Michael Andretti wants to be the best Honda team
Andretti Autosport is banking on a couple of its offseason engineering changes and motivation throughout its four-car driver lineup to reassert itself within the Verizon IndyCar Series after a challenging 2016 season.

Outside of the month of May in Indianapolis, where Alexander Rossi won the 100th Indianapolis 500, Andretti Autosport struggled as a team last season, primarily on the road and street courses.

By the season finale at Sonoma Raceway though, the team had made some setup gains and was firmly in contention with all four cars.

The bump at Texas was so severe it caused IndyCars to bottom out frequently
Following a 2016 season in which both of the Texas NASCAR races were heavily delayed by rain, and the IndyCar race had to be postponed from June to August due to a drainage issue, track president Eddie Gossage has ordered a resurfacing process, expected to be completed within the next 10 days.

The reconfiguration will involve a revised track drainage system, the banking of Turns 1 and 2 reduced by four degrees, and the width of the racing surface increased from 60 to 80 feet.

NASCAR Season Begins With Small Crowd On Hand For The Clash

15,000 was a very generous estimate
LAT for Toyota

NASCAR's Advance Auto Parts Clash season-opening exhibition yesterday "rolled out before the smallest crowd for a big-league Daytona race in recent memory, an estimated 15,000."

The event began at about 11:30am ET and was won by Joey Logano after being postponed from Saturday due to rain.

Observers can "blame the rain-mandated rescheduling" or the fact that Dale Earnhardt Jr. was in the "TV booth instead of his racecar."

But it "wasn't a busy day at the ticket window, and that's always troubling for Speedway officials." Daytona Beach NEWS-JOURNAL

Self-driving car race finishes with a crash
Roborace cars before one crashed
Roborace cars before one crashed

Fans attending Formula E's Buenos Aires ePrix got a nice treat: the first 'race' between self-driving cars on a professional track, courtesy of a test from Roborace. Only... it didn't quite go according to plan. Roborace's two test vehicles (known as DevBots) battled it out on the circuit at a reasonably quick 115MPH, but one of the cars crashed after it took a turn too aggressively. The racing league was quick to tout the safety advantages of crashing autonomous cars ("no drivers were harmed"), but it's clear that the tech is still rough around the edges.

Does Jimmie Johnson's Daytona DNF spell trouble for Hendrick drivers

If the Hendrick cars are so bad how is it that they were fastest in qualifying? Or did the NASCAR T&S computers put them on the front row?

Twice during Sunday's rain-delayed Advance Auto Parts Clash at Daytona International Speedway, Jimmie Johnson spun without provocation off Turn 4. The first time, on Lap 17, he took out the Ford of Kurt Busch. The second time, Johnson nosed into the inside wall near the entrance to pit road crashed out of the 75-lap exhibition race. Forget that Johnson failed to finish the Clash for the sixth straight year. More important is the observation that the balance of the Hendrick Motorsports cars has been problematic at restrictor-plate tracks.

Daytona Clash Jimmie Johnson Accident Quotes
Jimmie Johnson
Jimmie Johnson
JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 LOWE’S CHEVROLET SS -  Sidelined in a single car crash on lap 48:

THIS IS LIKE SHADES OF LAST YEAR DURING SPEEDWEEKS WITH YOUR TEAMMATES HAVING SIMILAR ISSUES, IS THIS MORE OF A HENDRICK AERO ISSUE OR THE TRACK BEING SLICK?

“I don’t know. I guess last year there were a couple of issues there. It’s so bizarre because the car hasn’t been loose anywhere else. The first time I got loose I got into the NO. 41 (Kurt Busch) and crashed him and I feel terrible for that. And then that time, I didn’t think it was going to turn around. I was about half-throttle running along. I’m not sure if the car behind me got close and helped my cause, but it had been very loose off of Turn 4 from the moment I crashed Kurt, on. Maybe the track is changing. We certainly plan to race at night. And it’s weird because I’ve made a living out of a loose race car and to have it bite me this afternoon, and unfortunately take the No. 41 out, I’m disappointed in myself and our situation for that.”

It's a given that a smart NASCAR crew chief will push the limits of the rules - and find loopholes in existing legislation wherever they're available. Between seasons, however, NASCAR has gone a long way to close a loophole in the inspection process.

This year, if a car fails at any stage of pre-qualifying or pre-race inspection, the team must take the car back to the garage, return to specifications and start the entire process over again.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. is on the last year of his contract with Hendrick Motorsports. He plans to race for a couple of months, see how he feels, before he decides whether to sign up for more. After his time off, retirement no longer feels like a distant notion. "I've done everything I ever thought I would do," he says. "I've done more than I thought I was capable of doing. I look at my trophies and can't believe they're mine." But his mind is still not quite settled. As much as his time off made him a better human being, it couldn't replace the feeling he gets inside a race car -- that happiness at making so many other people happy. "I've had a hard time trying to find something that's comparable," he says. More at ESPN The Magazine

Christmas comes but once a year. The same is true of the unique qualifying format for the Daytona 500. The basics are straightforward. Only two cars in Sunday's time trails are locked into their starting positions for the Daytona 500-the pole winner and the car that qualifies on the outside of the front row.

Advance Auto Parts Clash Postponed Due To Rain
The Advance Auto Parts Clash at Daytona has been officially postponed due to rain, and has been rescheduled for Sunday at 11:35am just prior to Daytona 500 qualifying.

Rain had been in the forecast for Friday at Daytona, but most of the afternoon on-track activities went off as scheduled, including the opening Daytona 500 practice, but while the season-opening ARCA race was under a red flag for a multi-car crash, the skies opened up and forced officials to call the race complete with five laps still to go.

Rain continued to fall as pre-race festivities began, and shortly after 9:30pm NASCAR officials made the call to postpone the event.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM YOUR 10 STARTS IN THE NO. 88 CHEVROLET LAST SEASON?
"Honestly, it was kind of just gaining a lot of confidence back.  I spent a lot of years driving different equipment and you always feel like you can get the job done as a race car driver, but sometimes you kind of get down on yourself.  Definitely felt like last year I proved to myself and everybody else that I deserve a shot to be here.  At the same time, I learned a lot from all my teammates at Hendrick Motorsports and getting to lean on all those guys was so much fun.  It still is fun.  I’m glad to continue to be a part of the team.  To get to lean on a seven-time champion in Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon, Chase Elliott, Dale (Earnhardt), Jr., Kasey Kahne, there are so many smart people.  It’s been a lot of fun.  It’s been a learning experience and just trying to make the most of every opportunity that I get."

Chevy Bolt EV drivers reporting 300+ miles range
Chevy Bolt
Chevy Bolt

Even we were surprised when we heard the news that the Chevy Bolt EV would get 238 miles on a charge according to the EPA on a 60kWh battery. The “SubCompact Crossover”, as Chevy likes to call it, gets about 30 more miles of EPA range than Tesla’s huge, 7 seat Model S on the same battery capacity but without the low drag coefficient that the Tesla enjoys.

But some new Bolt EV drivers are finding they can really stretch out that mileage, especially in California where the weather is in the 60s or higher year round.

Los Angeles resident Glenn Williams was able to squeeze out 300 miles with some leftover charge in the battery doing what could be considered normal driving in and around Los Angeles including 100 miles of freeway driving.

Kurt Busch being sued by former agent
Kurt Busch
Kurt Busch
Sports Management Network alleges NASCAR driver Kurt Busch owes more than $1 million in contractual obligations after he abruptly ended his contract.

A lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court this month claims Busch, a former NASCAR champion, agreed in or around July 2012 to the compensate 10% of all revenue paid from personal services agreements to the network under a representation agreement beginning in January 2013.

The move took place after "it became apparent that the money Defendants would receive in 2012 from KB's professional driving activities would be a fraction of what they previously receive," reads the lawsuit.

This is how socialism works - if you work hard to get ahead the government takes from you (taxes) and gives to the lazy arses

All cars running under IMSA’s new DPi platform have been slowed in the latest round of Balance of Performance adjustments following last month’s season-opening Rolex 24 at Daytona.

The Cadillac DPi-V.R, which dominated the race, along with both the Mazda RT24-P and Nissan Onroak DPi, are facing power cuts ahead of next week’s IMSA-sanctioned test at Sebring International Raceway.

The V8-powered Cadillac has been given a hefty 1.5mm reduction in air restrictor, while both the Mazda and Nissans have lost turbo boost across all power ranges.

Sergio Marchionne will look like a loser again in 2017 - he has an engine man in charge of the entire car design. Imagine that!
(GMM) Sergio Marchionne has admitted he "looked silly" after his brash target of wins and the title did not materialize in 2016.

"For 2016, all bets are off," the Ferrari president had said.

It was a stark contrast to Ferrari's uncharacteristically quiet winter this time around, with rumors suggesting the great Maranello team is either worried about a flawed design or preparing a true 2017 championship challenge.

As for his 2016 proclamations that ultimately resulted in not a single race win, Marchionne said: "If an employee tells me that our car is four seconds faster than the last one, I have no choice but to believe him.
