Final Daytona 500 TV rating hits new low
Not only did a lot of cars go home wrecked, the TV ratings were in the dumper as well
Not only did a lot of cars go home wrecked, the TV ratings were in the dumper as well

Fast-national viewership data shows that the Daytona 500 on Sunday drew another record-low TV audience. Fox drew 9.2 million viewers for this year’s race, which Denny Hamlin won. That is off slightly from 9.3 million for Austin Dillon’s win last year, which aired up against the Pyeongchang Games and had been the race’s lowest figure. Two years ago, Kurt Busch’s win drew 11.9 million viewers for a race that began an hour later than normal.

The fast national rating was a 5.3, which is flat from last year. The overnight figure was tracking to be up, but did not hold. This year’s sold-out race did draw a record streaming audience on Fox Sports Go (average minute audience of 53,293). Out-of-home Nielsen figures for Daytona will be available later this week. Sports Business Daily

Pirelli introduces its 2019 F1 tire range
2019 Tires
2019 Tires

As pre-season testing gets underway, Pirelli explains the latest range of tires as they make their debut in Barcelona.

Three Colors, Five Compounds

There will be only three Colors at each 2019 race: white for the hardest compound of the weekend, yellow for the medium one, and red for the softest compound. In total, there will be five compounds available for the year: they are numbered from 1 to 5, going from hardest to softest. As all five compounds are on track at the pre-season test in Barcelona, the hardest (C1) and the softest (C5) compounds won’t carry the usual stripes during the test. Compounds C2, C3 and C4 will instead carry the usual branding with stripes: colored white, yellow and red respectively. This will only happen during tests: for grand prix weekends there will be just three compounds at each race.

Car repair technician shortage is real

With cars moving to 100% electric by 2030 to 2040, far less repair technicians will be needed - electric motors are good for millions of miles with zero oil changes needed.
New-vehicle dealers have heard numerous alarms in recent years that they face a shortage of experienced service technicians as baby boomers retire and fewer would-be techs enroll in training programs. The National Automobile Dealers Association calls technician retention the "hottest topic" of the dealership performance improvement programs it sponsors.

The shortage could become even more acute. Technicians dissatisfied with their compensation or work environment are finding greener pastures in other fields, often for higher pay.

Moreover, as auto technicians acquire skills to work on advanced driver-assist systems, electric vehicles and autonomous vehicles, they become even more valuable to other industries that also face a shortage of highly trained technicians. They are potential candidates for poaching by industries such as heavy equipment, heavy-duty diesel, railroads and aerospace.
