Courtney Force raced to the qualifying lead in Funny Car during Friday qualifying at the CARQUEST Auto Parts NHRA Nationals in Phoenix.

Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel) and Erica Enders-Stevens (Pro Stock) also were qualifying leaders at the second race of the 2015 NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing season.

Force ran a 3.996-second pass at 321.58 mph in her Traxxas Chevy Camaro during the second session of qualifying at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park to take the top spot in her category and record a track record speed. Force was the only Funny Car racer to record a run quicker than four seconds on the first day of qualifying. At the season opener in Pomona two weeks ago, Force sprinted to a 3.995-second run in the third round of qualifying to enter race day No. 1.

McLaren admits Melbourne approaching too quickly
Jenson Button in the McLaren-Honda in Barcelona
(GMM)  For F1's top teams, 2015 is a case of putting the troublesome first year of the new turbo V6 era in the past and setting sights on closing the big gap to Mercedes.

It is bad news for McLaren, the British grandee who struggled last year and relished the prospect of kicking off a new works collaboration with Honda in 2015.

That has now begun, but the fledgling McLaren-Honda project is struggling with its innovative MP4-30 car as returning Japanese engineers discover the full complexity of the sport's new 'power unit' era.

Faster rivals have Mercedes' eyes 'wide open'
Lewis Hamilton in the superior Mercedes. Mercedes are lying through their teeth and are sandbagging to hide their superiority
(GMM)  A fascinating picture is beginning to emerge from winter testing, as multiple teams threaten to step up and challenge Mercedes.

Until now, Ferrari has appeared surprisingly as the biggest threat to Mercedes' supreme dominance.

"They could be our opponents this year," 2014 runner-up Nico Rosberg admitted on Friday, as he tested in Barcelona despite some neck and back problems.

"We have our eyes wide open," he is quoted by Germany's Auto Motor und Sport.

NASCAR indefinitely suspends Kurt Busch
Kurt Busch

We should have something official shortly. However, multiple outlets are reporting that NASCAR has indefinitely suspended driver Kurt Busch, in the wake of his pending domestic violence charges, and the recent protective order issued against him from contacting or going near his ex-girlfriend Patricia Driscoll. Also, a written statement today by Kent Count (Delaware) commissioner David Jones noted it "more likely than not" Busch "committed an act of abuse."

We will pass along more information as we receive it. However, Busch has been indefinitely suspended, something NASCAR is expected to announce at 6:40 p.m. ET. Reportedly, Regan Smith will replace him in the #41 car in Sunday's Daytona 500.

After 2015, Gordon is done
Gordon is happy to just walk away
Not long after announcing last month that 2015 would be his last season as a full-time driver in the Sprint Cup Series, Jeff Gordon left open the door for the possibility of driving in select races in 2016 and perhaps beyond.

Speaking on Thursday at Daytona International Speedway, the Hendrick Motorsports driver all but completely slammed the door shut on competing in NASCAR's top series once this season concludes.

Asked about why he might consider running the Brickyard 500 in future years -- a possibility Gordon broached during the recent Charlotte Motor Speedway Media Tour -- the four-time champion struck a much different tone during a press conference Thursday morning at The World Center of Racing.

Ricciardo over Raikkonen on Barcelona day 2
Daniel Ricciardo nips Kimi Raikkonen on Day Two in Barcelona
Daniel Ricciardo handed Red Bull a welcome boost by going fastest on this week's second day of pre-season testing in Barcelona.

It was incredibly tight at the top of Friday's timesheet, however, with less than a tenth of a second covering Ricciardo, Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen and the Williams of Felipe Massa.

Ultimately the Australian's 1m 24.574s - set on Pirelli's yellow-marked soft tire - proved enough, with Raikkonen finishing 0.01s and Massa 0.098s down the road.

(GMM) Ferrari's new boss is not changing his targets for the 2015 season, despite a strong showing in winter testing for the fabled team.

Before the SF15-T emerged with consistently chart-topping pace at the Jerez and Barcelona tests, Maurizio Arrivabene - newly arrived at Maranello in the wake of the disappointment and calamity of 2014 - said he would be satisfied if Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen win once or twice.

Sandbagging Mercedes racers back on song in Barcelona
(GMM) Mercedes' race lineup is back on song in Barcelona.

As the second test of the winter began on Thursday, Lewis Hamilton did ten laps before retiring unwell with a high temperature.

He was replaced by team reserve Pascal Wehrlein, even though the young German was actually in action for Mercedes' customer team Force India.

Reportedly, that was because Hamilton's race teammate, Nico Rosberg, was suffering from an inflamed nerve in his neck.

Kurt Busch asks to re-open order; Driscoll to appear on Fox & Friends
Three days after a Kent County (Delaware) Family Court commissioner issued a protective order sought by Kurt Busch's ex-girlfriend Patricia Driscoll against the NASCAR driver, Busch's legal team filed a motion to reopen the hearing and delay the scheduled release Friday of the commissioner's conclusions on why he found that Busch had committed acts of domestic violence against Driscoll. Busch's attorneys filed the motion Thursday with new evidence that alleges that Driscoll did not tell the truth when testifying about the alleged Sept. 26 attack at Dover International Speedway.

Despite Late Crash, Danica Patrick Qualifies, Then Tempers Flare
Danica Patrick took a long, deep breath and finally exhaled after qualifying for the 57th Daytona 500 on Thursday night. But not before letting #11-Denny Hamlin have it. The two had a lengthy and animated conversation on pit road after Patrick overcame a late-race spin through the field prompted by a nudge from Hamlin in the corner to finish 10th and make the race. It was the second such incident in two days -- Hamlin and Patrick crashed in Wednesday's practice.

"I don't want to have these issues, but if we're going to have these issues, we're going to deal with them," Patrick said afterward. "We can't be putting ourselves out of the race on someone else's expense and nothing happens to him. I like to race hard, but there's no point in being out there wrecking each other. I just wanted to let him know I was disappointed, of course."

After plunging on Fox Sports 1 last year, overnight ratings rebounded for NASCAR's Sprint Unlimited on FOX. The NASCAR Sprint Unlimited earned a 3.2 overnight rating on FOX Saturday night, up 78% from last year on FS1 (1.8) but down a tick from 2013 (3.3). Despite the big increase, the 3.2 is the lowest ever for the Sprint Unlimited on the FOX broadcast network. Head-to-head, the Sprint Unlimited trailed coverage of NBA All-Star Saturday Night on TNT (4.4).

Danica, Denny And Desperation
Danica Patrick loses control in between Turns 3 and 4 Thursday night. Hamlin says only Danica loses control of her car if he gets too close to her
Only one word describes Danica Patrick during a Daytona Speedweeks that’s been borderline disastrous: stressed. Two years removed from the 500 pole, she’s gone from media darling to having to give the same less-than-darling answers to the media 20 times a day. “Yes, I’m in the final year of my contract.” “Yes, I feel confident I’ll be re-signed.” “Yes, I haven’t made the progress you guys think I should make in NASCAR, but I’ve still made some progress.”

So the tension balloon rose its flag during Daytona Media Day, then failed to pop during a ho-hum Sprint Unlimited. The following Sunday led to Patrick posting a weak qualifying time, making her vulnerable to (gasp!) missing the Daytona 500. As it turns out, had she not finished in the top 16 (or 15 — let’s not go there) in Thursday night’s Duel, she would have failed to qualify. It was a pressure cooker the likes of which Patrick admitted after this race she had never been involved in before in her career; and that’s before you even mention Denny Hamlin’s front bumper.

Barcelona Day 2: Ricciardo on top in morning

As Ricciardo was returning to the pits, Raikkonen's own soft-shod effort fell 0.010s short of beating him, Sergio Perez put the year old 2014 Force India on the super-soft tire in 3rd.

Winterfest: Andretti Autosport day 1 quote board
SHELBY BLACKSTOCK
NO. 51 STARSTRUCK MAZDA

- Tested at the 2.74-mile circuit with three sessions over the last two days
- The 23-year-old's best time came on Wednesday's afternoon session at 1:25.5781

"It was an up and down test for the No. 51 Andretti Autosport Indy Lights team. It's really cold down here at Nola (Motorsports Park), which makes it really hard to test for things when we are going to race in complete opposite conditions when we come back in April. The car was the best during the middle of the day when it was the warmest, but the second day of testing didn't make it into the 50s. In the end we learned a lot and hope it continues at Barber (Motorsports Park) next month."
