Daytona's Chitwood Says 500 Attendance Was Up "Significantly"

Chitwood happy with 500 attendance
Daytona Int'l Speedway saw an attendance uptick for yesterday's Daytona 500 over last year, with the 300 and 400 level of seats in the new frontstretch grandstand effectively selling out, according to track President Joie Chitwood III. The track is in the middle of its $400M Daytona Rising renovation, with completion scheduled for next year. Chitwood, who during the early portion of yesterday’s race walked the concourses encompassing the 40,000 new frontstretch seats that are already installed, said the race “was not sold out, but we were up significantly over last year.”

Chitwood: “That’s a big deal for us – especially moving into next year, when everything is going to be done. I was pleased with the backstretch, which is usually not the best location to be at a race. But I actually thought the crowd was respectable back there. And if you look at the frontstretch, I think we sold almost every seat.” He added the track stopped selling infield fan-zone passes on Saturday after reaching capacity, notable because demand for them usually reaches its height on Sundays. ISC stopped releasing attendance figures in '12 for all of its properties. Adam Stern, Staff Writer SportsBusinessDaily.com

Smith to drive #41 in Atlanta
Regan Smith
Stewart-Haas Racing will run the No. 41 Chevrolet at Atlanta Motor Speedway this weekend with Regan Smith behind the wheel for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500, the organization announced Monday.

Smith will begin driving the No. 41 car during an open test session at Atlanta on Thursday, according to a team release.

An interim driver for the Kobalt 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on March 8, and races beyond that, has not been determined, according to the team.

Kurt Busch, the full-time driver entering the season, was suspended by NASCAR for an indefinite amount of time on Friday after the conclusions reached by Kent County (Delaware) Commissioner David Jones stated that a "preponderance of the evidence" indicated that Busch "committed an act of domestic violence" against former girlfriend Patricia Driscoll last September at Dover International Speedway. The findings were released four days after a Delaware family court granted Driscoll's request for an Order of Protection from Abuse, stemming from their alleged altercation in Busch's motor coach. Both of Busch's appeals were denied on Saturday.

Rossi on form
Rossi on form
After two weeks of analyzing data, Movistar Yamaha MotoGP’s Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo have returned to the Sepang International Circuit for the start of the second official three-day pre-season test. Despite the difficult track and weather conditions the teammates were able to finish today’s session in first and fifth respectively.

Rossi was up for the challenge of repeating his strong ride of two weeks ago. He needed little time to get back into the swing of things and was quick to take over the top spot from his teammate at the start of the eight-hour long session. As the temperature started rising the pace of the field picked up, but the Doctor was quick to respond and cruised back to the top the leader board with an impressive 2’00.414s lap, which kept him sitting on top for the rest of the session.

Dale Earnhardt Jr.: 'I made a real bad decision' in Daytona 500

As usual Dale Jr. had the best equipment but could not get the job done

Dale Earnhardt Jr. had the car to beat in the Daytona 500, but he made a rare mistake that cost him a shot at the win.

Earnhardt, who led 32 laps, was running third on a restart with 18 laps to go but chose the wrong line and got stuck in the middle, dropping all the way to 15th. He made a late charge on the green-white-checkered restart to finish third, but left Daytona International Speedway disappointed.

"I made a real bad decision on that restart with 18 to go," he said. "I made a poor choice and got shuffled back and you can't do that. It's real disappointing because the team gave me the best car."

Earnhardt hoped to get a late push from runner-up Kevin Harvick or Hendrick teammate Jimmie Johnson to mount a charge at winner Joey Logano, but it was too little and too late.

NASCAR cites 'competitor safety' in throwing the final caution
NASCAR officials say they felt the backstretch crash Sunday on the final lap of the Daytona 500 had enough hard hits with the wall that they had to throw the caution as leader and eventual winner Joey Logano entered Turn 3. It resulted in a somewhat anticlimactic finish with the race ending on a judgment call under yellow-flag conditions without a scramble to the finish line. But it was a finish that NASCAR said was necessary for safety reasons.

Our line didn't form up and it's typically whatever line gets organized the most usually goes forward on these green-white checkers and we just – inside line didn't get going. We came up a little short again."

Why did you have radio issues again?

"We just didn't have – I had communication, but it was just staticy and there was something we've been fighting for really a couple years."

Barcelona Day 4: Sandbagging Mercedes to dominate 2015 season
Rosberg fired a warning shot across the bow of every other F1 team in the paddock.  The Mercedes is 2-seconds per lap faster than everyone else.
Romain Grosjean turned the fastest lap Sunday at Barcelona with a time of 1m24.067s on Pirelli Super-Soft tires.  However, Nico Rosberg was just 3/10ths slower on the rock hard Pirelli medium tires.  Pirelli says the super-softs are 2 seconds per lap faster, so that puts Rosberg's real time at 1m22.3s.

No one is even close to Mercedes.  It is already game, set, and match for the 2015 season.  It will be a Mercedes 1-2 parade again. The only thing missing will be the floats.

NASCAR has no excuse to scrimp on safety
It is inexcusable. Incomprehensible. Idiotic.

But it remains true that dozens of NASCAR tracks have the technology to make their facilities safer for their stars – the drivers – and yet have not done so.

The latest example came Saturday, when Kyle Busch slammed into an infield wall in the Alert Today Florida 300 at Daytona International Speedway. That interior wall was not protected by a SAFER barrier, commonly called a “soft wall,” which lessens the impact of crashes.

Busch climbed out of the car, alert but in obvious pain from a compound fracture of his right lower leg and a mid-foot fracture of his left foot. He went to the hospital on a stretcher. His pregnant wife was in tears. He is out of Sunday’s Daytona 500.

Steve O'Donnell and Joie Chitwood III admit Daytona blew it
Joie chitwood III
Joie Chitwood III

From a NASCAR Press Conference held at Daytona International Speedway Saturday evening after Kyle Busch was injured in a wreck where his car impacted the inside wall entering turn 1. The wall currently has no SAFER Barriers. The transcript of that press conference: Kerry Tharp: "Good evening. We have with us NASCAR executive vice president and chief racing development officer Steve O'Donnell, and also Joie Chitwood, who is president of Daytona International Speedway. At this time let's hear from Joie."

JOIE CHITWOOD III: Obviously the first thing is that our thoughts and prayers go to Kyle. Last thing we want to see is a competitor injured here at the Daytona International Speedway. Our thoughts and prayers go to him. The Daytona International Speedway did not live up to its responsibility today. We should have had a SAFER barrier there today, we did not. We're going to fix that. We're going to fix that right now. We've got the team out tonight. We're going to install tire packs along that 850-foot linear square feet of wall, so we're ready to go racing tomorrow. Following that, the Daytona International Speedway is going to install SAFER barrier on every inch at this property. This is not going to happen again. We're going to live up to our responsibility. We're going to fix this and it starts right now.

Glen Wood at Daytona for 69th Consecutive Year
Glenn & Leonard Wood
Daytona wouldn’t be Daytona for Wood Brothers Racing if team patriarch Glen Wood wasn’t sitting in front of the hauler holding court with the who’s who of NASCAR racing.

Wood, 89, is attending his 69th consecutive race on Florida’s Atlantic coast. Starting in 1947 as a spectator to watch Curtis Turner drive, through driving to victory himself in the last three races run on the sand, to being the owner of a dominant team in the ‘60s and ‘70s, to being a proud father watching his sons follow in his footsteps, Wood hasn’t missed a February in Daytona since shortly after World War II.

“The first trip down here in 1947, we came not knowing anything about the place,” Wood recalled. “It was just something off the wall to do. We heard about this big race by the ocean and we’d never heard of that. So we drove down here.”

Kyle Busch injured in XFINITY Series race at Daytona, will NOT race in Daytona 500 (2nd Update) UPDATE #2
Kyle Busch could be out for the season because ISC saved money by not installing a Safer Barrier on a wall that could be impacted head-on at high-speed.  He is lucky to be alive.
According to NASCAR, Busch was being treated for a right lower-leg compound fracture and a left mid-foot fracture, and would not compete in the season's biggest event.  Joe Gibbs Racing reported that Busch underwent surgery on his right leg on Saturday night.

JGR also announced in a release that veteran Matt Crafton will serve as the interim driver for Busch's No. 18 Toyota during for the Daytona 500. An interim driver has not been released for the following March 1 race at Atlanta Motor Speedway or any future races.

02/21/15 Kyle Busch will miss Sunday's Daytona 500 following a hard crash in the closing laps of Saturday's Alert Today Florida 300 at Daytona International Speedway. NASCAR To Address SAFER Barrier Issue
Following the NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Daytona on Saturday, NASCAR Executive Vice President Steve O'Donnell said the accident that caused injuries to driver Kyle Busch "should not have happened."

"That's on us," said O'Donnell. "We're going to fix it. We're going to fix it immediately."

Busch was involved in a multi-car crash with seven laps to go in Saturday's 120-lap race, causing his car to go out of control and strike an area if the infield wall not protected by a SAFER barrier.

Busch was able emerge from the car but was immediately transported to a local hospital with a leg injury and will miss Sunday's Daytona 500.

"The Daytona International Speedway did not live up to its responsibility today. We should have had a SAFER barrier there today, we did not.," said Daytona Speedway president Joie Chitwood. "We're going to fix that. We're going to fix that right now.

Kurt Busch's appeal to be heard Saturday (Update) UPDATE We are getting word out of Daytona that Kurt Busch has lost his appeal to be reinstated by NASCAR. We will pass along more information as we receive it.

Kurt Busch
Kurt Busch's attorney said he plans to "immediately" appeal NASCAR's suspension of his client. NASCAR indefinitely suspended Busch on Friday after a Kent County (Del.) Family Court Commissioner concluded that "it is more likely than not'' that Busch committed an act of domestic abuse against his ex-girlfriend, Patricia Driscoll, in September.

NASCAR said that Busch could appeal the suspension and that it would "expedite" the process. A ruling on the appeal likely will come before Sunday's Daytona 500. Busch's appeal will be heard on Saturday by a three-member panel. He cannot have a lawyer argue the cause on his behalf, but can have other representatives with him during the hearing. Additionally, Busch can appeal the panel's decision to Bryan Moss, Final Appeals Officer. NBC Sports

6-car wreck in Xfinity Series qualifying
On TV Kyle Busch was very critical of the idiotic NASCAR qualifying races. "Now you have cars that were fast enough to transfer through that are wrecked."
A six-car wreck brought out a red flag during the NASCAR XFINITY Series Coors Light Pole Qualifying on Saturday at Daytona International Speedway

Drivers involved included Daniel Suarez, Landon Cassill, Harrison Rhodes, Blake Koch, Carlos Contreras and Tanner Berryhill.

The pileup came about at the end of the second group participating in the first round of group qualifying before the season-opening Alert Today Florida 300, 3:30 p.m. ET on FOX Sports 1.

Suarez appears to be heading to his backup car.

Quotes from Saturday at Barcelona
Pastor Maldonado, fastest on super softs
Lotus: Pastor Maldonado
: “We achieved a lot today and it was great to complete so many laps and end the day as the fastest car. Certainly, I feel much more confident in the E23 and we’re learning a lot about it with all the laps we’re completing. I’m able to push when needed and everything about the whole package feels a lot more together than last year, especially if you remember where we were in terms of performance and reliability during the pre-season in 2014. We still have a lot of work to do, but we’re making very good progress so we’re all very positive about the work being done.”

Open Letter from Brian France to NASCAR fans
NASCAR Chairman and CEO Brian France
Coming off a season in which we saw Kevin Harvick claim the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series crown after a thrilling debut for the new Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup format, Chase Elliott burst on to the scene with a championship of his own and Matt Crafton repeat as champion in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, it's easy to see why many say 2014 was one of the all-time best for NASCAR.

However, I think the best is still to come.

As we embark on 2015, we are excited to start a new 10-year agreement with our great partners at FOX Sports and to welcome NBC Sports back to NASCAR. With FOX and NBC we have two world-class media companies committed to bringing NASCAR excitement to our great fans in bigger and better ways.

We could not be more thrilled to welcome Comcast's XFINITY brand as an entitlement partner for the next 10 seasons and look forward to this new era of partnership with an innovative leader in the entertainment space.

End of the line as Caterham plans assets auction (Update) UPDATE Here is the link to the auction, which is now live.

02/05/15 (GMM)  Caterham is finally reaching the end of the line, as administrators decide to auction the backmarker's assets.

Just as hope rises for F1's other ailing team, Manor, it emerged on Thursday that auctioneers have been appointed to begin selling Caterham's assets next month, including the crucial 2014 cars and race-day equipment.

Acting team boss Finbarr O'Connell suggested two weeks ago that once an auction is arranged, it means Caterham's hopes of surviving the winter are over.

Horner says Manor 'deserves' F1 return
Christian Horner
(GMM) Christian Horner on Saturday insisted he would welcome the former Marussia team back to F1.

Earlier, despite vocally championing the rights of struggling teams, Force India in fact blocked the reborn 'Manor' team's quest to bounce back in 2015 by using its car of last season.

But Williams made clear it supports Manor's plight, and now Red Bull chief Horner said the backmarkers "deserve" their place in formula one as they exit administration.

Barcelona Day3: Verstappen fastest on super-softs
Max Verstappen
Before rain hit the circuit, Max Verstappen turned the fastest lap of 1m24.739s on the morning of day 3 of F1 testing in Barcelona, but he set the time on super-soft Pirellis while 2nd fastest man, Lewis Hamilton, set his time on Pirelli tires that were two grades harder - the mediums.

This underscores just how fast the sandbagging Mercedes team really is, consistently running on tires harder than everyone else, and when they are on the same hardness tire, they are over a second per lap faster than everyone else.

Sandbagging so they never turn the outright fastest testing lap of the day, and running race simulations on Pirelli winter hard tires out a pace no one can even come close to, 2015 will certainly be another 1-2 Mercedes parade every race.

First Ferrari target is a podium - Vettel
Sebastian Vettel
(GMM)  Sebastian Vettel says he has arrived at Ferrari with the passion the most fabled name in formula one deserves.

"Many things have changed" at the Maranello team, the former Red Bull driver and German told the Italian broadcaster Rai.  "Even a driver," he smiled.

Indeed, it was rare to see the former quadruple world champion smile at all last year, as his ex-boss Christian Horner revealed the 27-year-old even contemplated quitting the sport amid the sport's switch to V6 power.
