Fire brings an early end to Lotus' day Pastor Maldonado ended the second day of this week’s Bahrain test with 31 laps completed after a fire in the rear of the E22 ended the day’s running for Lotus F1 Team. Pastor set a lap time of 1min 41.613secs as the team continued to conduct evaluations of new parts.
Pastor Maldonado, E22-02: “It was a tough day for us with the fire. We need to keep working and for sure it’s not an ideal situation for the team, or for me but we need to keep focus, work together and I hope for the future we can be better. Today was my last day of pre-season testing so it will be very interesting when we get to Australia.”
Alan Permane, Trackside Operations Director: “Today we had a localized fire in the car which ended our running early and caused a reasonable amount of damage to the E22. We’re inspecting the chassis and installation very carefully to deduce the cause of the fire and rectify any issues we find. Clearly this is not how we wanted to spend our day, but our focus is getting the most from the remaining days of the test.”
Romain Grosjean will drive the Lotus E22 for the final two test days at Bahrain International Circuit.

Rahal responds to Panther lawsuit Unhappy with the summary denial of its bid protest before the federal Government Accountability Office (GAO) and unwilling to accept that the government chose to save taxpayers almost $5 million dollars per year by selecting Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing’s (RLL) competitive bid, Panther Racing has sued Indycar, the National Guard’s agency, RLL, and others.
Panther is seeking damages from the National Guard awarding RLL a sponsorship contract for the Indycar racing series. The facts and issues Panther raises in the lawsuit are many of the same it raised before the GAO, which issued a 9-page decision noting that RLL was rated higher than Panther in three out of four categories. The GAO also noted that there was no evidence supporting many of Panther’s allegations, and that the National Guard’s decision probably was driven by the basic fact that Panther’s base per year price was approximately $5 million more than RLL’s base price.

Red Bull denies Vettel 'hissy fit' (GMM) Red Bull on Friday mocked suggestions Sebastian Vettel threw a "hissy fit" amid the world champions' early-season crisis in 2014.
As the new title-defending RB10 car and engine supplier Renault continue to struggle in pre-season testing, Red Bull's Dr. Helmut Marko this week warned world champion Vettel that "getting angry" was no solution.
But in a website posting by the 'Red Bull Spy' on Friday, the team said a "major news broadcaster" had gone a step too far by claiming German Vettel in fact threw "a hissy fit" recently before "refusing to drive the car because it wasn't very good".
Red Bull called the report "lurid speculation".
"I suppose it could be true. Maybe four world championships really have turned him into a screaming prim donna," the 'Spy' said sarcastically.

Full Recovery for Schumacher Unlikely, Some Say Nearly two months after Michael Schumacher suffered serious head injuries in a skiing accident and was placed in a drug-induced coma, some neurologists say the seven-time Formula One champion seems unlikely to make a full recovery.
The 45-year-old Schumacher fell while skiing in France and hit the right side of his head on a rock, cracking his helmet. Doctors operated to remove blood clots from his brain but some were left because they were too deeply embedded.
Schumacher's condition stabilized after he was placed in the coma. Late last month, doctors began the process of withdrawing sedatives to try to wake him up.

Perez on top on Day 2 in Bahrain F1 teams completed a second day of testing in Bahrain as Sergio Perez remained at the top of the timesheets in the Force India VJM07.
Red Bull had a better day in terms of speed with Daniel Riccardo finishing third quick. However, the top team, Mercedes, had problems and Lewis Hamilton finished only 7th fastest some 3.5 sec behind Force India, Ferrari, and Red Bull.
Fuel loads are unknown, but it is the first time Red Bull has shown itself to be up among the fastest Mercedes- and Ferrari-powered cars. It was another sluggish start to the day for the world champions, but by the checkered flag Ricciardo had completed 66 laps and appeared to be running reliably in the final couple of hours. Sebastian Vettel will take over for the remaining two days of the test, which should help to either confirm or deny the apparent progress made on Friday.

The Doctor demonstrated his pace once again on Friday as he prepares for a 15th premier class campaign, setting a quickest time on his 13th lap, in spite of some struggles with the 2014 tires being experienced by the Yamaha factory team.

The company said in a blog Wednesday that it has narrowed the list of sites for the plant to locations in Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas and that "final site selection activities are underway."

Dale Earnhardt Jr. winning the Daytona 500 is considered a good thing for NASCAR. Its most popular driver the last 11 years winning its most prestigious event certainly should generate interest in the sport. "The really great thing is how authentic he's been throughout the week here as he's doing (the media tour)," France said in a phone interview Wednesday.
"That's great. We'll have to see (on the impact)." Earnhardt won the Daytona 500 for the second time, with the first coming in 2004 before the world of Twitter and in the infancy of social media. Now, Earnhardt is tweeting photos during his winner's media tour and that has gotten an already enthusiastic Junior Nation looking forward to the rest of the season even more. The session saw Sergio Perez topping the time charts for Force India.
Today's program for most teams comprised long runs and a limited amount of setup evaluation in the morning, followed by race procedure work (including practice pit stops / starts) in the afternoon.
"We really needed a good day to start this week and today we had it. We managed to do a lot of laps, try several different compounds and mappings, and it's been a fantastic day in terms of learning about the car. Tomorrow is my last day in the car before the season starts so hopefully we can have another solid day to be in good shape for Melbourne."

Red Bull and Toro Rosso started to show some speed and reliability from their Renault Power Unit with Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat both completing 43 laps, though behind the screens there were obvious signs (and sounds) of work being carried out on the Australian's car for much of the morning.

Trans Am Series heads to Sebring opener with 52 car field When the Trans Am Series opens the 2014 Trans Am Championship at Sebring International Raceway on Sunday, March 2, history will be made. The current slate includes over 50 entries—a number unheard of in modern day Trans Am.
The last time a Trans Am race had 50 cars on grid was in 1982 at Road America, some 32 years go. In addition, this will be the fifth time in Trans Am’s history the field has reached 50 cars. Surprising, given the history and legacy of the Series.
“We’re very proud of the turnout for Sebring,” said John Clagett, President of The Trans Am Race Company. “It is a testament to how far Trans Am has come over the past few years. We owe a lot to all the hard work put in by the owners, drivers, teams and staff members who have helped us get this far. With 52 entries now confirmed for Sebring and 50 following up next weekend at Homestead, we have the potential to set an all time record for Trans Am entries at back-to-back weekends.”

Dani Pedrosa ended the second day of February’s second Sepang test at the top of the pile, with track conditions somewhat better than on Wednesday.
In the continued absence of his injured World Champion teammate Marc Marquez, who will not return to testing before the season opener at Qatar, Pedrosa shoulders the responsibility in finalizing Repsol Honda’s preparations for the 2014 season. He stepped up to the plate late on Thursday with a 2’00.039s best effort as the track cooled in the early evening.
Pedrosa had struggled with jet lag on arrival in Malaysia but the best time of the week so far put him ahead of Aleix Espargaro who impressed again with his sheer pace to end the day 0.281s off the top – having led for much of the afternoon.
Like many of the riders Espargaro’s focus switched to race simulation in the afternoon and those longer runs will continue on Friday before the test concludes.
The first thing that you notice about James Hinchcliffe is his wardrobe.
It's more - how do you put it - presentable. Gone is the lime green color scheme of his former sponsor GoDaddy.com. Instead, on a chilly Wednesday afternoon in the city, the Oakville, Ont., Indy Car driver is sitting upstairs at Steam Whistle Brewing wearing a subtle black golf shirt that bears an understated blue-and-white logo of his new sponsor, United Fiber & Data.
Has Hinchcliffe gone corporate? No way, he says.
While United Fiber & Data sounds like the kind of company Go Daddy would parody in its off-beat commercials (which used to star Hinchcliffe), it is actually a broadband networking company owned by members of the 1990s alternative band, Live.
Ride-Buyer Villeneuve’s Indy 500 return proves what? For four years, Jacques Villeneuve was one of the world’s best open-wheel drivers.
From 1994 through 1997, the talented and sometimes tempestuous Canadian dazzled on both a North American and international stage.
He was a star in CART for two years, and in 1995 was the young upstart threatening the iconic names of Andretti, Unser, Fittipaldi and Rahal.
A year later he was off to Frank Williams’ Formula One team, in 1996. He almost won his first Grand Prix in Melbourne, and he took the title chase down to the last race in Suzuka. He won the championship a year later after surviving a lunge from Michael Schumacher at Dry Sac corner in Jerez, Spain.

Level 5 Confirms Withdrawal from Tudor Series Despite having come out on top in last month’s Rolex 24 at Daytona, Level 5 Motorsports has withdrawn from the TUDOR United SportsCar Championship with immediate effect.
The four-time American Le Mans Series class champions, which fielded a pair of Ferrari 458 Italia GT3 cars in the new-for-2014 GTD category, scored its first class victory at Daytona with drivers Bill Sweedler, Townsend Bell, Jeff Segal, Alessandro Pier Guidi and team owner Scott Tucker.
While having initially planned to continue through the 11-round TUDOR Championship with at least one Ferrari for Sweedler and Bell, team manager David Stone made the decision to pull the plug on the program Monday.
Enerson Keeps his Cool, Wins Race and Cooper Tires USF2000 Winterfest Title
The weather conditions turned decidedly cooler today at Barber Motorsports Park, perfectly mirroring the demeanor of young Florida racer RC Enerson. The 16-year-old from New Port Richey made a perfect start from pole position and controlled the final round of the six-race Cooper Tires Winterfest for the Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda to secure both the race win and the mini-series spoils for Team E Racing.
Englishman Michael Epps, who started second, needed to win the race and gain the bonus points for fastest race lap and leading the most laps in order to wrest away the title from Enerson. Epps wasn't quite able to match his double race-winning form from yesterday - and came up just 0.003 shy of claiming the fastest lap point, which also went the way of Enerson - but still came away with yet another podium finish and second place in the final points tally. His efforts also ensured a comfortable Team Championship victory for Belardi Auto Racing.
Hargrove Wins, Pigot Clinches the Cooper Tires Winterfest for Pro Mazda
From left, Pigot (2nd), Hargrove (1st) and Grist (3rd)
Scott Hargrove and his Cape Motorsports with Wayne Taylor Racing team continued their impressive Pro Mazda learning curve by scoring a fine victory this afternoon at Barber Motorsports Park in only their fourth start. Hargrove, 19, from Vancouver, B.C., Canada, slipped past pole-sitter Spencer Pigot into Turn One and led the remainder of the 20-lap race, albeit not by much as Pigot remained within a few car lengths to secure the Cooper Tires Winterfest for the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires crown and team championship honors for Juncos Racing.
The 16-car field was tightly packed as the cars accelerated across the line for the rolling start, and while Pigot had earned the right to set the pace by virtue of securing pole position yesterday, he was unable to maintain that advantage through Turn One. Hargrove, who won last year's Cooper Tires USF2000 Championship Powered by Mazda, timed his start to perfection and remained side-by-side with Pigot through Turn One which gave him the preferred inside line - and the lead - entering Turn Two.
Latest F1 news in brief - Wednesday (Update - Gossage vs. Ecclestone)UPDATE F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has hit back at the Texas Motor Speedway boss who criticized the scheduling of this year’s United States Grand Prix.
Eddie Gossage, president and general manager at the speedway, had hit out at the scheduling of this year's Grand Prix which takes place on the same weekend that his track hosts all three NASCAR series including the Sprint Cup's AAA Texas 500. Gossage was also critical of Circuit of the America bosses for their failure to stand up to Ecclestone in terms of the scheduling of the race.
However, never one to shy away from a row, Ecclestone wasted no time in responding to Gossage's comments.

Having made his final chassis choice for the season, Dani and his team will spend the remainder of the test working on engine mappings and general set up work.
