McLaren quiet on Alonso's 'medical situation'
(GMM)  McLaren has counted itself out of the continuing speculation about Fernando Alonso's medical condition.

Rumors have been rife ever since Sebastian Vettel said he witnessed the "strange" manner in which the Spaniard lost control of his McLaren last Sunday.

But amid continuing speculation about the nature of the crash, Ferrari's Vettel on Friday conceded that Alonso may simply have lost control in a gust of wind, as argued by McLaren.

"It was really windy that day," Vettel told reporters at the Barcelona test.

NASCAR changes rule regarding reporting criminal charges
On Wednesday, NASCAR issued a series of technical bulletins to teams, with most of the additions to the rule book focused on aspects of the cars such as the minimum weight of front and rear hubs, approved brake ducts and other miscellaneous items. However, the first item on the bulletin was listed as "Section 2.11 Required Notice."

Under the Membership section of the rule book, this new addition states, "Any NASCAR Member charged with any violation of the law (misdemeanor and/or felony) shall notify NASCAR ... prior to the next scheduled Event or within 72 hours of being so charged, whichever is earlier."

NASCAR car thieves caught on video
NASCAR driver Travis Kvapil's #44 ride was jacked from a hotel parking lot -- and TMZ Sports obtained surveillance video of the heist.

The car and the trailer that transports it were both stolen out of the Drury Inn parking lot outside Atlanta -- and in the video you can see a Jeep SUV pull into the lot. One person dressed in black gets out of the Jeep, walks across the lot toward the transport trailer ... and the Jeep pulls away.

Toyota: NASCAR Atlanta qualifying quote board
Denny Hamlin
DENNY HAMLIN, No. 11 FedEx Ground Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing
Starting Position:  4th

How was the car in qualifying?

"It wasn't bad. Our car shows pretty decent speed, which is good. Interested to work on it in race trim and kind of see where we're at. I thought the test went pretty well for us, but we definitely showed more speed today than what we did on Thursday. Excited about our run – top-five starting spot is a pretty good place here in Atlanta. It will give us a good pit stall and we can go from there."

Is this considered a strong track for Joe Gibbs Racing?

"It's one of my better race tracks for sure. Just seemed like the last four or five years here we've kind of figured something out, but we haven't racked up many wins. It's all about closing the deal here in Atlanta and that's hard to do especially after 500 miles."

Sandbagging Mercedes begins to put the hammer down (Update) UPDATE Added driver quotes below.

02/27/15
Rosberg turns the heat up on Friday.  2015 will be the 2nd consecutive year of a Mercedes 1-2 at every event. Yawn.....

Everyone in the paddock knows that the Mercedes team is about 2 seconds per lap faster than the competition, but until today, they have been running harder tires and carrying more fuel to conceal their advantage.

On Friday they began to show just how fast they can be. Nico Rosberg set the fastest lap of Barcelona Formula 1 testing so far running on soft tires for the first time. Rosberg turned a lap at 1m22.792s and that was not even on super soft tires.

That lap was 0.7s quicker than the previous best, set by another Mercedes powered car – the Williams' of Felipe Massa on the same tire on Thursday, and 1.2s clear of Valtteri Bottas in the Williams who was his nearest challenger today.

David Ragan talks about filling in for Kyle Busch
David Ragan
DAVID RAGAN, No. 18 M&M's Crispy Toyota Camry, Joe Gibbs Racing

What has the transition been like to working with Joe Gibbs Racing?

"Thank you guys, good to see everybody. Today was great and really uneventful. Just learning the Joe Gibbs Racing bunch and their process, how they conduct business on a practice day and a race day. We were fortunate to have a few hours today where we could hot lap our M&M's Crispy Camry and just really enjoy getting to the race track. It's been a busy week and working through a lot of details. Thoughts are with Kyle (Busch) this evening and his wife Sam as they're back home and certainly I'll probably give Kyle a call this evening and touch base with him. Certainly, his team and his program and I'm fortunate to have the great opportunity to fill in for a little while. It was good. Atlanta Motor Speedway is one of my favorite tracks to come to for a lot of reasons, but the race track is in great shape. We have a lot of speed and the tires fall off throughout the run, so a lot of characteristics that make it fun to drive. A lot of fun to hit the track today. The weather worked out just perfect and was glad to make a few laps for sure."

Formula E to have 10 teams next season
Formula E will have 20 entrants per event next season
London|26 Feb 15

As in its debut season, there will be 20 Formula E cars on the grid for all of the races of the 2015/2016 FIA Formula E Championship.

Earlier this week, it was announced that eight manufacturers had been accepted to produce powertrains for season two of the world’s first all-electric racing series. This led to confusion in some quarters, who mistook the manufacturers for entrants.

The eight manufacturers, who will be able to produce components such as motors, invertors and gearboxes, are ABT Sportsline, Andretti, Mahindra, Motomatica, NEXTEV TCR, Renault Sport, Venturi Automobiles and Virgin Racing Engineering. These manufacturers have to be prepared to supply more than one team with new components they produce.

Home race for Elliott and Napa
Chase Elliott
DRIVER: Chase Elliott / No. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS Chevrolet
RACE: Hisense 250 (163 laps / 251.02 miles)
TRACK: Atlanta Motor Speedway
DATE: Saturday, Feb. 28, 2015

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (Feb. 25, 2015) – Chase Elliott's debut at Atlanta Motor Speedway last year was a historic one. Less than six months ago, Elliott drove his NAPA AUTO PARTS Chevrolet to his first career NASCAR XFINITY Series pole at the 1.54-mile facility, becoming the youngest pole winner in the track's history. Returning this weekend as the reigning series champion, Elliott is focused on defending the title and winning in front of his hometown crowd.

Elliott, a native of nearby Dawsonville, Ga., will have his work cut out for him, as Atlanta's new race date of Saturday, Feb. 28, will blanket the area in much cooler temperatures than what the No. 9 NAPA AUTO PARTS team experienced last year. But if past efforts are any indication, Elliott is up for the challenge. The JR Motorsports driver scored two wins (Chicagoland Speedway and Texas Motor Speedway) and six top-five finishes at 1.5-mile tracks last season.

Busch crash prompts renewed safety efforts at The Glen
There have been some horrific crashes at Watkins Glen, like this Michael McDowell one last year
Joey Logano won a close Daytona 500 on Sunday, but his first win in NASCAR's premier event was somewhat overshadowed by renewed talks for increased track safety in the sport.

Logano's win at Daytona International Speedway came one day after Sprint Cup driver Kyle Busch was injured in a multicar crash during the NASCAR XFINITY Series race at the same track.

Busch - one of NASCAR's biggest stars - suffered a compound fracture of his lower right leg and a fracture to his left foot after he hit an inner concrete wall head-on with his No. 54 Toyota Camry. While much of the 2.5-mile Daytona track is lined with Steel and Foam Energy Reduction (SAFER) barriers, that section of concrete wall was unprotected by any kind of energy-absorbing barrier.

Alonso 'wanted to test' in Barcelona - Dennis
After crashing last weekend, Alonso wanted to test this weekend in Barcelona. The doctors said no
(GMM)  He was in hospital for four days, and is absent at the final winter test in Barcelona, but Fernando Alonso is "categorically not injured".

That was the insistence on Thursday of McLaren supremo Ron Dennis, who at the Circuit de Catalunya addressed the ranks of international media following the controversy and conspiracy theories in the wake of Alonso's crash last Sunday.

It was the length of the Spaniard's hospitalization, and the fact he is still being barred from driving, that has put McLaren-Honda under the spotlight after the team dismissed a "normal" accident and insisted its star 33-year-old driver was not at all hurt.

IMSA Confirms Updates to Regulations
