INDYCAR receives gold ADDY Award
The 2010 IZOD IndyCar Series "Leave Your Mark" multimedia consumer campaign received the gold ADDY Award - the highest national honor -- from the American Advertising Federation.

The campaign communicated the speed, innovation and excitement of the IZOD IndyCar Series on a national level and in race markets. It was an invitation for fans to leave their mark on the sport as it leaves its mark on them. The aggressive angle of the cars along with the paint-peel effect and burnout tracks gives the notion of the car moving so quickly its own paint scheme can't keep up.

Old GM comes to end of road
The end is near for the remnants of the 102-year-old General Motors Corp. A federal bankruptcy judge is expected to give final approval today to the liquidation plan of the "Old GM," known officially as Motors Liquidation Co. It will mean some compensation for bondholders who lost billions in the bankruptcy and clear the way for a massive environmental reclamation program at polluted GM sites.

"It's time to bury the past and it put it away, said David Cole, chairman emeritus of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor and son of a former GM president.

"As long as an old GM is around, it's going to cause a memory of a past era. The symbolism is really quite important. We need to move on with the future."

Earlier, Ecclestone had hinted at a date during the August break, but that seems to have now been ruled out, perhaps due to the likely extreme desert heat.

Small change to NASCAR post-race inspection rules
In 2011, NASCAR will have two random teams selected for post-race inspection, John Darby, Cup series director explained. Last year, NASCAR took the first car out as a random for post-race inspection. That's why you saw cars go to the garage early and go back out at different times in the race to not be the first car out. Darby said that NASCAR is changing how that random will be selected. "There will still be a random inspection from the cars outside the top 35 (in car owner points), but we're going to make it more random,'' Darby said. "We're going to do it very similar to the way we do the (random) for the big group of the cars at the end of the race, drawing a number kind of situation so nobody really knows who that random will be.'' What will happen is that the crew chief of the first car out of the race will be asked by NASCAR to select two numbers. One will represent a car not in the top 35 in car owner points to be selected for post-race inspection. Another number will represent a car in the top 35 in car owner points for post-race inspection.  Virginian Pilot

Hamlin's knee still recovering
Denny Hamlin expects his left knee to be "aching for a while" since he never wants to slow down. "It still hasn't quit aching," Hamlin said Wednesday. "My problem is I never let myself heal all the way and, of course, I continue to push the limits as far as I can." Hamlin had surgery 11 months ago to repair the torn ACL in his knee, which he injured playing basketball before the 2010 season. Yet, it's still bothering him. That was evident during media day at Texas Motor Speedway, where he won both NASCAR Sprint Cup races last year. Hamlin rubbed the knee at times after moving between interviews in the large ballroom and getting up and down several times. "I was back playing a little bit of pickup basketball probably six, seven months after the surgery, when you really shouldn't even step on the court until a year after," Hamlin said. "I do everything I can to be competitive and try to rush the recovery process, and so I'm sure it's going to be aching for a while, at least until I give it a good few months rest." Cyrte Investments acquires stake in Williams
Dutch investment company Cyrte has claimed a five percent stake of Williams Grand Prix Holdings PLC, with the squad co-owned by Sir Frank Williams and Patrick Head making history after becoming the first motorsport outfit to list shares on the Frankfurt Stock Exchange on Wednesday.

The team suffered an early fall with the value of its shares during the opening day of trading, and despite improvements in the afternoon, the figure was just under four percent lower than its original rate. Cyrte CEO Frank Botman believes the partnership with Williams will benefit both parties in the future however, and he is looking forward to working within the world of Formula 1.

"This investment sees Cyrte and Williams create a strategic partnership in which we will assist the team to further develop its potential in all commercial aspects of its business," he commented. "It will also afford Cyrte a platform from which to participate in the growth of Formula 1."

Conquest, Mann pleased with progress at Texas IndyCar test

Conquest Racing and Pippa Mann were all smiles after completing a productive and satisfying test at Texas Motor Speedway on Tuesday.

The test, which was originally planned for Monday, was postponed to Tuesday on account of cold temperatures and high winds in the area. With the weather more cooperative the following day, Mann was finally able to turn her first laps aboard an Indy car.

The driver from Britain quickly found her comfort level in the Conquest Racing machine and thanks to her speedy adaptation to the Dallara-Honda, wasted no time getting up to speed, consistently running competitive lap times.

All while soaking in the experience, Mann was also quick to complete her IndyCar Series rookie test, which allowed the team to move on to the remainder of the day’s testing plan. Although a minor mechanical issue interrupted part of the day, the crew was able to promptly fix the problem and return to the track.

“I had a very good test day,” shared Mann. “It's the first time I have driven an Indy car, as well as my first run at Texas Motor Speedway, so before we got started I really didn't know what to expect. It didn’t take much time for me to get comfortable in the car and up to speed. We ran some competitive lap times, both on new and used tires. We lost some track time during the middle of the day with the fuel pump issue, but I can’t thank the guys enough for working so hard to get us back out there, which paid off because we made even more progress after that.

Random grid for Firestone Twin 275s announced
Sparks fly in Texas
The  Firestone Twin 275s at Texas Motor Speedway will be identical in almost every way when the IZOD IndyCar Series race twice in the same day this summer, with one significant exception. Both will pay half the points and half the bonus prizes for the event, but the field for the second race will be set by a blind draw, INDYCAR officials announced today the rules for the June 11 race.

INDYCAR CEO Randy Bernard and Texas Motor Speedway President Eddie Gossage announced last August that almost 20 years after Rick Mears won both races at Atlanta Motor Speedway that the IZOD IndyCar Series would revisit the twin race format.

The Firestone Twin 275s (formerly the Firestone 550k) on June 11 will consist of two full-field races on the 1.5-mile, high-banked oval. Traditional oval qualifying will be held to set the grid for the first race, and the starting positions for the second race will be determined by a blind draw conducted immediately following the conclusion of Race 1. Teams will have one hour of preparation time between the first and second race.

Donington gets green light

The FIM, motorcycle sport's world governing body, has given final confirmation that Donington will host the second round of the 2011 World Superbike Championship, its first major event since 2009, on March 25-27.

The circuit's problems stemmed from the audacious bid of previous lease owner Simon Gillett to stage the F1 British Grand Prix at Donington. Having signed a long-term contract for the race, he also planned a £100million redevelopment of the track and its facilities.

Felipe Nasr continued his sterling efforts at the sharp end of the Cooper Tires British Formula 3 International Series field in the second day of official testing at the Rockingham circuit. Having set top time yesterday - 1m 10.953s - the 18-year-old Brazilian today shaved a further three-tenths from his best to end the two days on 1m 10.586s, which is a second and a half inside last year’s Rockingham pole time.

Today was a generally quicker day at the Northamptonshire speedway, with six of Nasr’s rivals joining him in setting laps under the 1m 11s mark. His closest competitor today was another of his Carlin team-mates, Danish championship newcomer Kevin Magnussen, who was 0.146s adrift. The others in the super-quick club were fellow Carlin runners Carlos Huertas, Rupert Svendsen-Cook and Jazeman Jaafar, plus Hitech men Pietro Fantin, who went fifth fastest to split the Carlin formation, and Riki Christodoulou.

Stewart driving a cab Wednesday in Vegas
Tony Stewart
"Taxicab Confessions" is back. Not on HBO, but on the Las Vegas Strip, at least for a couple of hours on Wednesday. Tony Stewart will be a taxicab driver for a day. Stewart's ride will be familiar to NASCAR fans and slightly outlandish to those calling Las Vegas home. His taxi will actually be a bona fide #14 Mobil 1/Office Depot Chevy stock car made street legal thanks to some headlights and taillights. With a passenger seat installed as well as a lighted "Taxi" sign on the roof, Stewart will be in business. No horn will be needed. The 358 cubic-inch V-8 that rests under the hood and is controlled by Stewart's right foot will suffice. He'll begin at Lucky Cab where the real pros will show Stewart the ropes before making pick-ups at the MGM Grand. Expect to see Las Vegas icons David Copperfield and Elvis riding shotgun with Stewart, along with some familiar faces, such as Miss Sprint Cup. TrueSpeed Communications

Phoenix NASCAR TV Rating UPDATE Sunday's Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway earned a 5.9 TV rating, making it the most watched race in the track's 23 years as a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series venue. The following is a breakdown of PIR television ratings from Sunday, February 27.

The 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series SUBWAY Fresh Fit 500 earned a 5.9 fast national rating on FOX, up +5% over the 5.6 final rating for the 2010 California event, the 2nd race on FOX in 2010. An average of 6.9 million households (+6%) and 10.4 million viewers (+13%) tuned in to the Phoenix event on FOX. As an additional comparison, the 2011 Subway Fresh Fit 500 5.9 fast national rating is up +59 percent over the 3.7 final rating for the 2010 Phoenix event, the 7th race of the 2010 season, also on FOX.

02/28/11 Overnight ratings for the second Sprint Cup race of the season were up 6 percent, from 5.0 in 2010 to 5.3 in 2011, according to the Street & Smith’s SportsBusiness Daily.

The ratings for Fox’s telecast of the Subway Fresh Fit 500 at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday marked the second straight week that ratings have increased. The final ratings for the Daytona 500 were up 13 percent.

The overnight ratings from the race Sunday matched the 2009 ratings from Auto Club Speedway. The ratings specifically for Phoenix are not comparable because that race last year was on a Saturday night in April and drew a 3.7 rating.

Rocky start for Williams after floatation launch
(GMM)  Williams on Wednesday had a troubled start to its life as a publicly listed company. At the morning launch of the British team's 28 per cent shareholding on the Frankfurt stock exchange, shares sold for 25 euros. But the stock had declined to just over 24 euros shortly afterwards, the Bloomberg financial news service reported.

"It's always brave to come to the market but being brave is what we do," team chairman Adam Parr commented.

He said the value decline in early trading was not "overly" concerning.

An unnamed Frankfurt-based trader told Reuters: "This is what I expected and I think that it will not get any easier for Williams."
