Sachsenring To Alter Its Turn 11 Ahead Of MotoGP Championship
The Sachsenring racetrack will alter its infamous turn 11 ahead of the MotoGP World Championship race at the German venue on July 13. Turn 11, the first right hand corner after several left hand turns, has been a tricky section of track for riders in the past, so a new corner layout will be introduced to improve safety. For the 2014 German Grand Prix, turn 11 will be altered by mobile curbs made of steel, relocating the racing line and reducing corner speed. MotoGP

India Not Giving Up Hope For Return Of F1 After Being Dropped
India's motor sports federation "is optimistic the tax problems that have jeopardized the country's Formula One race will be resolved and the home Grand Prix will be back in 2016," according to Sudipto Ganguly of REUTERS. F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone said that the Buddh Int'l Circuit near New Delhi "will not be hosting a race next year after being dropped from the 2014 championship." Problems over taxation, with F1 classified as entertainment rather than a sport in India, "as well as the considerable bureaucracy governing the import of equipment have been seen as obstacles."

The Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) "is waiting for a final clearance from the sports ministry for recognition as a national sports federation and hopes that will pave the way for the race's return." FMSCI Chair Akbar Ebrahim said, "It's unfortunate but once the government gives the recognition I am very hopeful that Mr. Ecclestone's concerns will be satisfied." Reuters

More problems for IndyCar's Panther Racing
John Barnes
Many were surprised when two-time IndyCar Series champion Panther Racing was not included in the sanctioning body's program that financially supports full-time teams.

The reason for the Leaders Circle omission is just as surprising: Panther turned down the opportunity to receive the estimated $1 million.

"We couldn't commit to being at all the races, and there are pretty big penalties in (the contract) if you fail to do so," team co-owner John Barnes told The Indianapolis Star.

Pirelli concerned by rear lock-ups on 2014 F1 tires
Pirelli is concerned by lock-ups on the rear tires which are “going right the way through the belt pack”.

The tire manufacturer was in the spotlight during 2013 for a number of tire failures, but has taken a more conservative approach to this season in order to avoid a repeat. However, during an exclusive interview withCrash.net, Hembery said problems with the new brake-by-wire system has led to occasions when the tires are suffering significant damage.

“Something new that we've been observing is on the brake-by-wire for example, we've seen a few more lock-ups and flat spots compared to the past on the rear,” Hembery said. “That's something that we're looking at closely to try and understand what is going on, because they're not just flat spots they're actually very dramatic going right the way through the whole belt pack. So it's not just a superficial thing that you would just release and carry on, it's something that would stop you.

Park and Ride options at Bristol
Decisions for race fans and guests of Bristol Motor Speedway on where to park and how to get in and out are a bit easier to make with park and ride shuttle options in the region. Two options, one in Tennessee and one in Virginia, give fans various choices to let someone else do the driving to the NASCAR events at Bristol Motor Speedway March 15 and 16. Current locations are: Sullivan Central High School at Tennessee Exit 66 -- 113 Shipley Ferry Road in Blountville, Tenn., -- and Sugar Hollow Park in the Exit 7 area of Bristol, Va. At least one more location at Exit 7 is expected to be added soon.

"This is an expansion of the program we have had for two or three years now," said Jerry Caldwell, executive vice president and general manager of Bristol Motor Speedway. "One of the main questions new fans ask is 'where do I park,' and one of the main issues we have heard from locals is traffic. By offering various locations in the area, guests can let someone else deal with parking and traffic. They just ride." See complete route information at Bristol Motor Speedway's website

LB Press Telegram: F1 should stay out of Long Beach
Does anyone get as teary-eyed as we do over the glorious Formula One days in Long Beach? We covered the race regularly back when it was an international affair. As much as possible, we covered it from the exclusive Moet Club in the Convention Center, smoking cigars with then-supermodel Christie Brinkley, kicking it with our best friend Paul Newman, wading through drifts of spilled cocaine in the bathroom and watching the race on the big screen while the Ferraris and Alfa Romeos roared around outside. While it was cool having track-side passes, they didn’t have anyone out there pouring us flutes of Moet champagne or offering us platters of artichoke hearts and pâté.

Our life as race-reporter Internationale came to a jarring end in 1984 when the boorish CART cars replaced the cars from Europe, South America, Australia and elsewhere. From that point, we traded in our magnum of Moet for a can of Bud and our fancy imported cheese for a giant turkey leg. We tossed our beret for a Marlboro gimme cap, our ascot for a Rat Fink tank top.

Mercedes expands to seven cars in DTM
Mercedes DTM drivers.  Note the ones who had F1 aspirations until the open wheel cancer hit them.  They could not buy their ride up to F1 so they race stock cars where they get paid to drive, which is as it should be in professional motorsports.
The Mercedes-Benz driver line-up for the 2014 DTM season is complete: Apart from former DTM champions Gary Paffett and Paul Di Resta, ex-formula 1 driver Vitaly Petrov will line up in this season’s DTM for the brand with the three-pointed star, along with last year’s Mercedes-Benz DTM drivers – Daniel Juncadella, Christian Vietoris, Pascal Wehrlein and Robert Wickens.

All seven DTM Mercedes AMG C-Coupé drivers prepared for the start of the season on May 4th in Hockenheim by working out in the Austrian town of Seefeld. The team made final preparations for the upcoming tests and the season opener at Hockenheim at the fitness camp in Seefeld.

Young guns come of age
Four drivers, who have successfully moved up into the DTM in recent years as Mercedes juniors are again in this season’s line-up for Mercedes-Benz. Christian Vietoris will begin his fourth DTM season on May 4th in Hockenheim. Vietoris finished in fourth place in the standings last year on 77 points and was best-placed Mercedes-Benz driver. “I reached my personal goal of a position in the top five last year, for sure” said Vietoris. “And I finished on the podium four times, but unfortunately, never quite made the topmost rung. I would really like to change that this year. My team and I intend to go flat out to achieve our objective.”

The front of the Porsche is downright ugly.  Those headlights will be pushing a lot of air.  What were they thinking?
Porsche returns to the great motor sport stage. Porsche finally took the wraps off the color scheme of its first top-flight sports car racer in 16 years when it officially announced what is being billed as its biggest ever factory motorsport program at Tuesday's Geneva motor show.

The sports car marque is sending a cutting edge technology platform, the new 919 Hybrid, to race in the top LMP1 category of the World Endurance Championship (WEC), which includes the renowned 24 Hours of Le Mans.

On the race track and at the Geneva International Motor Show, the LMP1 prototype will be accompanied by the new Porsche 911 RSR, another world premiere in Geneva.

Audi unveils DTM RS5
Audi has unveiled the new generation of the DTM Championship winning car at the Geneva Motor Show. The 2014-specification Audi RS 5 DTM with its aerodynamics package having been redesigned in practically all areas looks clearly more aggressive and features visual details bearing an even closer resemblance to the sporty production models of the RS line than its predecessor.

The task that confronted Audi Sport after the 2013 season was a real challenge: how do you make a DTM championship winning car even better? Since the strict regulations in the touring car series allow little room for maneuver, the engineers concentrated extensively on detail work. The latest result was unveiled to the public for the first time at the Geneva Motor Show. Noticeable at first glance: the new Audi RS 5 DTM appears significantly more aggressive. The reason for this is the near complete re-development of the aerodynamics.

“In addition to the suspension, our main priority was to improve the aero,” says Stefan Aicher, Head of Vehicle Design at Audi Sport. The RS 5 now has the honeycomb grill from the production car at the front and new air ducts feeding the engine and brakes. As a result, the race car now shares an almost identical look to the sporting RS production models.

Formula E - Daniel Abt Q&A
Daniel Abt
Following the confirmation of Formula E’s first driver line-up, there has been a lot of attention on Daniel Abt. The German, who will drive for Audi Sport ABT, is excited about the new format and says he will relish the challenge of navigating through the city streets. We had a chat with Daniel to get his thoughts on the year ahead.

Daniel, firstly welcome to Formula E. You were recently announced as one of the drivers for the Audi Sport ABT team alongside Lucas di Grassi. What has been the reaction to that and what attracted you to the series?
Thank you! The reaction has been really positive. Of course there are some skeptical people but almost everyone I know is looking forward to watching this brand new series. I have kept a close eye on the series from the beginning because it is totally different to any other championship at the moment. The potential of Formula E is huge and I am still a young driver so I’m more than happy to be a part of it.

Montezemolo: New F1 cars very complicated
Luca di Montezemolo
"It will be interesting to see how many cars will finish the first race in Australia," commented Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo at the event to launch the California T, the new Prancing Horse V8, which is already proving to be the star attraction at the Geneva Motor Show.

Speaking to the journalists in Switzerland, Montezemolo went on to say, "The design of these new Formula 1 cars is very complicated, with a lot of aspects still to be defined. Some parts of it we have already developed, whereas others still need working on to give their best. The run up to this season is a bit like a puzzle, with the parts slowing fitting together." With less than two weeks to go to the start of the Formula 1 World Championship, many teams have experienced difficulties during pre-season testing and look like heading to Melbourne less than completely ready. However, the President was only concerned with his own team.

Open Wheel Cancer: American Conor Daly has no money to buy an IndyCar ride
Conor Daly is the latest in a long line of talented American Open-Wheel drivers that will eventually be forced to race under the France Family umbrella where drivers get paid to drive - i.e. professional motorsports, not amateur like IndyCar where drivers have to buy their ride.
Aspiring American IndyCar Series driver Conor Daly's name is one race fans and the motorsports media have in recent seasons recognized as one to watch on the sport's list of potential future stars. But the life of a young driver attempting to make it to the top is not always a glamorous stream of fast cars, models and corporate jets -- or even driving in professional races. Autoweek spoke with the 22-year-old Indiana native about his plans for 2014 and beyond.

Autoweek: You've won the Skip Barber national championship, the Star Mazda championship. You've won a couple races in the GP3 Series and scored points in a GP2 Series race. You won the Indy Lights race in Long Beach in 2011, and raced for A.J. Foyt in last year's Indianapolis 500. A lot of young drivers would love to have that resume. Where do you stand for the upcoming season?

Despite the lower numbers, Sunday's race was easily the top sporting event of the weekend on broadcast.

Auto GP adopts F1-style qualifying sessions
Motorsports have always been a proving ground in terms of innovation and progress, and Auto GP is definitely a benchmark in that. Last year, the upgrade kit for the cars has been particularly innovative. With a low price it allowed the cars to get close to the times set by cars from championships requiring much higher budgets. And the innovation will continue on the sporting side for 2014 with a new format for qualifying.

The previous 30-minute session will be replaced by two knockout segments, that will respectively last 20 and 10 minutes. At the end of the Q1 session, the top-10 drivers will advance to the Q2, where they will battle for the pole setting the first five rows of the grid for Race 1. No changes will come for Race 2 with the grid featuring the top-8 finishers of Race 1 in reversed positions.

IndyCar News and Notes, 3/4/2014
Kurt Busch to drive for Andretti Autosport in the 98th running of The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.
Before anyone jumps down my throat, let me say I have no problem with any individual competing in any automobile race. Regardless of race, nationality, religion, gender, political affiliation, whatever; if said individual can qualify for the race, then said individual should be able to compete. Period.

Also, NASCAR star Kurt Busch and 1995 Indianapolis 500 winner and 1997 Formula 1 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve are name drivers, who will help draw viewers, and generate media coverage for the 98th running of The Greatest Spectacle in Racing. While you can count me amongst the vocal legion that would prefer to see up-and-coming American open-wheelers like Conor Daly and Sage Karam instead, rather than Busch and/or Villeneuve, I am not one who scoffs at the idea of either competing. Also, as mentioned before, both will help generate coverage and attention for the race.

My only concern is that IndyCar and IMS will focus too much of their promotional and marketing efforts on men like Busch and Villeneuve to the detriment of their established drivers. Drivers like Busch and Villeneuve should be part of the promotional efforts, but not the focus of them. How IMS and IndyCar utilize the presence of the big name drivers to draw greater attention to the overall product will be very telling. Because at the end of the day, having Busch and Villeneuve running Memorial Day weekend will add to the Indy 500. Just keep in mind, they won’t be running the next week at Detroit.

Andretti confirms Kurt Busch to run Indy 500
Michael Andretti and Kurt Busch last year when Busch tested at Indy in Ryan Hunter-Reay's car.
It has been over a decade since it was last completed, but this May NASCAR Champion Kurt Busch will endeavor to become only the fourth driver in history to contest the "Double" - competing in IndyCar's historic Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR's 600-mile race in the same day. Busch will make his first career Indianapolis 500 qualifying attempt behind the wheel of an Andretti Autosport Indy car. His entry will complete a stable of five (5) for Michael Andretti's championship winning IndyCar team. It is not the first pairing of Busch and Andretti Autosport, however, as in 2013 Busch completed a test day at Indianapolis Motor Speedway with the team and in the process passed the mandated Rookie Orientation program effectively setting the possibility of the "Double" into motion.

Kentucky state police say Speedway hasn't paid for security (Update) UPDATE
Kentucky Speedway
The Kentucky Speedway on Friday paid a long overdue bill of nearly $300,000 to Kentucky State Police for providing security on the track’s grounds during four major race weeks in 2012 and 2013.

Speedway Motorsports, which owns the track in Gallatin County, sent a check for $299,125.86 by express mail from its corporate headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina, said State Police Commissioner Rodney Brewer.

The payment was received one day after The Courier-Journal reported that the state police had been pressing the track since last August for the payment.

“We’re glad the issue is resolved. We’re glad to have the money and will certainly put it to good use,” Brewer said Saturday.

Long Beach watch what you wish for (2nd Update) UPDATE #2 Long Beach is the second largest gay community after San Francisco in California. This is not going to sit well with City Council we suspect. And besides, Note the comment on Bernie's thoughts on democracy. That's because he runs everything like a dictator. Hitler controversy and anti-Semitism - In a Times interview published on 4 July 2009, Ecclestone said "terrible to say this I suppose, but apart from the fact that Hitler got taken away and persuaded to do things that I have no idea whether he wanted to do or not, he was, in the way that he could command a lot of people, able to get things done." According to Ecclestone: "If you have a look at a democracy it hasn’t done a lot of good for many countries, including this one". He also said that his friend of 40 years Max Mosley, the son of British fascist leader Oswald Mosley, "would do a super job" as British Prime Minister and added "I don’t think his background would be a problem."

03/03/14 A reader writes, Dear AR1.com, I read with interest Brian Carroccio’s article, Long Beach watch what you wish for.  The article is pretty much spot on.  As glamorous as F1 would be at Long Beach, the economics just do not work unless the local government backs the race. I would be surprised if Long Beach votes to spend any money to support the race, but I guess we shall soon see.  Joseph Prieto

Ecclestone talks to Vladimir Putin
Getty Images
03/03/14 Bernie Ecclestone has said that not only does he "completely agree" with Vladimir Putin’s anti-gay propaganda laws, but that he believes "90 per cent of the world" do too.

In an ill-advised move, the Formula One boss lent his support for Russia’s controversial legislation, which prohibits the publicity of what it calls "homosexual behavior" in the country.

"He [Putin] hasn't said he doesn't agree [with homosexuality] just that he doesn't want these things publicized to an audience under the age of 18," Ecclestone told CNN in an exclusive interview.
