Nationwide, SMI Extend Through '17 (Update)
UPDATE CORRECTION: Auto Club Insurance has been a continuous title sponsor at Auto Club Speedway since 1997, a total of 18 years, making that the longest relationship between a track and an insurance company.  Originally a sponsor of the K&N Series when the track opened in 1997, they have most recently been the sponsor for the NASCAR Sprint Cup event there since 2003.

03/06/15
Continuing the longest-running relationship in NASCAR between a track operator and an insurance company, Nationwide on Friday night will announce that it has extended its sponsorship deal with SMI by three years through '17.

The company will make the announcement at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, site of this weekend's NASCAR national-series races. Nationwide, which made its entrance into motorsports in '99 when it originally signed with SMI, will remain as the exclusive insurance company at two tracks -- Charlotte Motor Speedway and Bristol Motor Speedway -- where it will receive assets including hospitality and digital signage. The Columbus-based company also will receive hospitality at SMI's six other tracks that host NASCAR races.

Aus GP denies boycott threat
(GMM) Australian grand prix organisers insist next weekend's 2015 season opener in Melbourne will not be boycotted.

German reports had suggested teams had safety concerns about racing in light of the mysterious circumstances of Fernando Alonso's recent testing crash. But Australian Grand Prix Corporation chief Andrew Westacott played down the claims.

"We're talking to the teams, formula one and the FIA multiple times every day and a boycott certainly hasn't been raised or discussed," he told AAP news agency.

"All the teams are coming to Melbourne; they're excited about the start of the new season, the freight is on its way, formula one personnel are on site at Albert Park setting up the broadcast and from our perspective it's 100 per cent all systems go," Westacott added. "We hold no fears about anything apart from containing the enthusiasm of the Australian public across the four days."

Andretti: Indycar racing competition 'off the charts'
Mario Andretti
Mario Andretti
One of America's greatest race car drivers was experiencing the icy road conditions in eastern Arkansas on Thursday afternoon, and he wasn't enjoying it.

"It's bad. Really bad, bad," Mario Andretti said during a telephone interview while driving from Memphis toward Little Rock on Interstate 40. "One lane is still covered [with ice], and there are lots of big potholes. The trucks are trying to avoid the holes and they keep coming over. ... It's just bad."

After flying into Memphis on Thursday morning, Andretti was driving to Little Rock to attend today's grand opening of the Firestone Complete Auto Care at 7426 Cantrell Rd. He is scheduled to be at the event from 9 a.m. until noon, and there will be an autograph session. There also will be a racing simulator and drawings for prizes.

Andretti, who turned 75 on Saturday, is the only racer to win the Daytona 500 (1967), the Indianapolis 500 (1969) and a Formula One world championship (1978). He also won four Indycar championships, and even though he retired in 1994 he stays close to -- and remains quite opinionated about -- the sport, and not just because of his son, Michael, who is a car owner, and his grandson, Marco, who is a driver.

The last of the new bodywork kits arrived Sunday, with teams increasing staffing to handle arrivals on the required delivery date.

Ganassi Racing will field four cars this season, which means the initial Chevrolet kit shipment amounted to about 500 pieces - with manuals on how they fit and can be utilized.

Ideally, teams would have taken delivery two months ago, but this was the schedule agreed upon, and it's tight. For most teams, transporters must be rolling toward the first test next Thursday, with the debut session March 14 at NOLA Motorsports Park near New Orleans.

Nurburgring track prepared to take it on the chin for the 'gipper'
UPDATE
F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone said that the fate of a German F1 Grand Prix for '15 "is due to be decided in the coming days," according to DW. When asked in an interview with German news agency dpa on a deadline for the decision, Ecclestone stated "certainly by this weekend."

Ecclestone: "[I'm] not sure it's going to happen." If the race is canceled, it "would be the first time that Germany has not hosted a race in the Formula One season since 1960." Despite having two possible venues, the German Grand Prix's "inabilty to attract fans and therefore revenue in recent years, has forced it's position in the race calendar to come into question." DW

02/25/15 Nurburgring official said that the racetrack "would be OK with taking a financial hit for hosting this year's German F1 Grand Prix," according to the SID. While the future of this year's German race "remains unclear,"

Capricorn Nurburgring Managing Dir Carsten Schumacher said, "We've said the interest of the fans and the region in the race is so high that we would be OK taking an acceptable operating loss."

However, he also knows that "it becomes more and more difficult to market the race due to the uncertainty surrounding it."

Schumacher: "That's also the reason why we've said we don't want to take on the organizing risk. There's no question that you earn money as the organizer of an F1 race. However, the problem is the hosting fee and you have to talk about that." SID

Ferrari talks began in 2008 - Vettel
Vettel going to Ferrari was rumored here on AR1.com way before any other racing publication knew about it...i.e. years ago.  We can also tell you that the reason Ricciardo was beating Vettel last year was because Red Bull knew Vettel was leaving and he was not getting the latest 'trick' stuff to prevent him from taking Red Bull secrets to Ferrari

(GMM)  Sebastian Vettel on Thursday admitted his first hint of a future Ferrari deal came many years ago.

In 2012, the German was in the glowing midst of his title-winning run at Red Bull, but the "dream" of one day wearing red was already strong.

"In the winter between 2012 and 2013 I went in secret to Maranello to talk with (Luca di) Montezemolo," Vettel told Italy's La Gazzetta dello Sport.

But he said the first informal "approaches" by Stefano Domenicali had come as long ago as 2008 - when he raced for Toro Rosso - and again in 2010.

"By the middle of last year, (Stefano) Domenicali was gone but the contact continued with Marco Mattiacci and I spoke again with Montezemolo," he added.

"The deal went ahead and I asked the opinion of Sabine Kehm, Michael (Schumacher)'s manager.  Unfortunately I could not talk to Michael," said Vettel.

But he had spoken with his great friend and mentor in the past about one day joining Ferrari.

NASCAR adds extra time for inspections
NASCAR officials have tweaked the opening day schedules for upcoming Spring Cup Series races at Las Vegas, Phoenix and Auto Club Speedway after delays in pre-qualifying inspection a week ago resulted in 13 teams failing to make it onto the track in time for qualifying. Friday's opening practice for Sprint Cup teams, originally scheduled to last 1 hour, 25 minutes, has been shortened by 10 minutes at all three tracks.

Qualifying for the three events will now take place five minutes later than previously scheduled. Those changes provide an additional 15 minutes of time for teams to prepare their cars for inspection and for officials to complete the inspection process. The revised schedules, which also note that qualifying inspection now begins five minutes after the completion of Friday's practice, are for the three West Coast races. No adjustments have been made for races beyond the Auto Club event. Teams have 50 minutes after practice to present their cars for inspection, at which time all work on the entries must cease. NASCAR Tracks report big profits, even with attendance down
Ticket sales are down but profits are up for the racetracks that have NASCAR events. The tracks cleared more than $100 million in 2014. It sounds as if, even though they are spending money tearing down seats at many places and putting up seats at a couple of others, they have money they can spend on other projects.

There are two main track operators with NASCAR national races: International Speedway Corp., which has a majority of its stock owned by the NASCAR-owning France family, has 21 Cup events (including the Sprint Unlimited and Daytona 500 qualifying races); and Speedway Motorsports Inc., which has a majority of its stock owned by Bruton Smith, has 13 Cup events (including the All-Star Race). Dover Motorsports Inc., also a publicly traded company, has two. Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Pocono Raceway are owned privately and aren't required to release their earnings.

"I love going to Vegas and I can’t think of a better track for Cheez-It to be on my Ford," said Biffle.  "Vegas has been a good track for us in the past and I feel confident we can get a solid run this weekend.  Cheez-It crackers are one of my favorite snacks and the car looks really good.  Hopefully we can get an even better finish for them than Chris did in Daytona."

MD Varsity Karting

Sterns wins final race, River Hill championship
Ben Punsalan of River Hill before the start of the A-Main. Punsalan and teammate Zack Spicer would combine to win the first MD Varsity Karting League championship for River Hill.
Starting on the outside of the front row, Jemicy School's Brendan Stern was able to out brake polesitter Jackie Ding in the first turn. From there, Stern would hold off Ding to win his third race of the 2015 Maryland Varsity Karting League last Tuesday evening on the Monaco Circuit at Autobahn Speedway.

However, the strong performance from Stern and Ding would not be enough. With Zack Spicer and Ben Punsalan finishing third and fourth, the River Hill Hawks captured the championship. Sandy Spring was second, with Jemicy third.

Crucial to the River Hill win was Punsalan's victory over Ding in Week 3. On a week, in which his teammate Spicer was out, Punsalan managed to keep Sandy Spring and Jemicy from scoring maximum points.

The Baltimore Lab School led by the Williams brothers Leonidas and Laurent finished fourth, with Wye River fifth.

IndyCar won't have an A.J. or Mario again
Mario Andretti and AJ Foyt
Question: Hard to believe Mario Andretti turned 75 last week and A.J. Foyt turned 80 in January. Both are arguably the two greatest drivers of all time but the way racing is today do you think we'll ever see their types again or the likes of their greatness? (Dave, Cincinnati)

Answer: There might be drivers who approach their records, but I can't imagine a scenario where another IndyCar driver transcends the sport as Mario and A.J. did. Of course, those two raced in a different, simpler era, sort of like boxers did. There weren't all the other sports and distractions to divide the attention, and that was an era when the automobile was so important to young people. But their combination of success, charisma and star power made them icons the likes of which the sport will never see again. As for the part about records, did you realize that Scott Dixon already has 35 race wins, and he's not yet 35 years old? At his current rate he'll catch Mario (52 wins) for second place before he's 41. Mario raced until he was 54. Foyt holds the record with 67 wins. Curt Cavin/Indy Star

New shopping experience at NASCAR tracks explained
Fanatics Authentic president Ross Tannenbaum said he wasn't surprised by the visceral and immediate reaction by scores of NASCAR fans when his company, Fanatics, announced a 10-year deal to become the official souvenir retailer of the series. The deal means merchandise haulers fans have come to love will be phased out in favor of a superstore tent.

NASCAR fans often are slow to adjust to change and misgivings about one company taking over sales left many on social media complaining about the loss of the traditional individual driver haulers and concerned about the possibility of elevated prices.

But ultimately, Tannenbaum said, "I think the fans are really going to love it."

Mercedes 1-2 F1 parade turning off fans - Horner
Christian Horner with his new squeeze, Jeri Halliwell
Christian Horner with his new squeeze, singer Jeri Halliwell

Red Bull boss Christian Horner is concerned Mercedes' power unit advantage over the rest of the field is putting fans off Formula One while only adding to the sport's financial problems.

After dominating the first year under new engine regulations in 2014, Mercedes is showing no sign of loosening its grip on the front of the grid this year despite more opportunities for its rivals to catch up over the winter. Red Bull's supplier Renault is hoping just to halve the gap to Mercedes this year, which would be a significant achievement under the regulations but still result in Red Bull struggling to match the world champions.

Danica Patrick approaching NASCAR's abyss
Danica Patrick
Danica Patrick
Despite having never won a stock car race, Danica Patrick remains one of the most popular drivers in the Sprint Cup series. Her 2013 pole start at the Daytona 500 garnered headlines around the country. Yet with sponsorship in limbo and performance stagnant, she is quickly approaching NASCAR's abyss and in danger of seeing her NASCAR dreams go up in smoke. She still has time to prove she belongs but the clock is ticking. Unless something changes soon, Danica Patrick's relevance as a race car driver will be gone for good.

Danica's entry into NASCAR came with plenty of fanfare. She ran a limited schedule at the Xfinity series level, splitting time between IndyCar and NASCAR in 2010 and 2011. Despite the split attention, Patrick showed promise and improvement. That 2011 season saw Danica score a top five and three top ten races in 12 races. Her average finish improved from 28th to 17th in a single season. The success encouraged her to roll the dice and make the switch over to NASCAR full time in 2012. Her Daytona pole raised expectations and gave fans a reason to hope that the best was yet to come.
