Hello from St Petersburg, Florida. The weather is only 60 degrees here today but the sun is shining and Tampa Bay will serve as a beautiful backdrop for the first IndyCar race of the 2018 season. The brunch this morning was sponsored by the St Petersburg Chamber of Commerce and the Vinoy Renaissance Hotel. The mayor of St. Petersburg, Rick Kriseman, praised the way the businesses in the downtown area have embraced the race over the past 14 events.
An icon of modern open wheel racing, Paul Tracy will join the Trans Am Series presented by Pirelli at Road Atlanta for the Georgia Speedfest, March 29-31, fielding the No. 87 3-Dimensional Services Group Chevrolet Camaro in the TA2 class.
Tracy, the 2003 Champ Car champion, will field the No. 87 in place of team owner Doug Peterson, who opted to enter a showcase driver in his absence at Atlanta. The addition of Tracy will give the 3-Dimensional team a potent one-two punch alongside former IndyCar competitor Rafa Matos, a full-time member and championship competitor in the TA2 class.

Firestone brand’s title sponsorship of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg. The announcement was made as the 2018 Verizon IndyCar® Series season gets underway in St. Petersburg, Florida, and gives the Firestone brand naming rights through 2020.
The 2018 Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg marks the Firestone brand’s fifth year as title sponsor, having begun its entitlement in 2014. The race has served as the season opener of the Series for the past seven years, providing Firestone with a great venue to engage race fans and consumers, while showcasing its best-in-class tire technology.
Sebastian Vettel stole the show the penultimate day of Formula 1 pre-season testing in Barcelona, blitzing the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya track record as Ferrari turned up the wick.
Vettel completed a number of fast hypersoft tire runs towards the end of the morning session, recording a fastest lap time of 1:17.182 to comfortably record the best time of pre-season testing so far and finish over one second clear of the field.
Russell on top during final day of Le Castellet test
George Russell set the quickest lap in the final day of FIA Formula 2 pre-season testing at Le Castellet, France, clocking in a time of 1:42.396 while DAMS’ Alexander Albon topped the timesheets during the afternoon session.
As teams sought to make the most of the remaining time available on the last day of testing, Arjun Maini was first on the scene at the start of the day. The Trident driver was followed onto the circuit by both ART drivers and teammate Santino Ferrucci, as the rest of the field filtered onto the track for an early flurry of activity.

Sebastian Vettel obliterated the unofficial lap record at Barcelona on Thursday morning of Formula 1 pre-season testing.
The Ferrari driver used hypersoft tires for the first time just before lunch break on a qualifying simulation to log the first sub-1m18s lap of the pre-season, a 1m17.953s.
Vettel followed that initial fastest effort up with a 1m17.644s, a 1m17.279s and finally a 1m17.182s to end the morning 1.176 seconds up on 2nd quick man Kevin Magnussen in the Haas at 1m18.360s on supersofts.
Fisker Inc., the electric car manufacturer and Tesla rival, has big plans in the works. The Drive spoke with CEO Henrik Fisker about his plans for solid-state batteries and his upcoming electric and autonomous vehicles.
Fisker, the controversial innovator who designed the BMW Z Series and the Aston Martin DB9, is creating his own line of patented solid-state batteries.
Solid-state batteries are comprised of solid electrodes and electrolytes. According to Fisker, solid-state batteries are non-flammable, fast charging, affordable to use, and work in extremely cold temperatures down to -35 degrees Fahrenheit. They can also store more energy than the hazardous lithium batteries, which can overheat and explode.
Michael Shank Racing’s Jack Harvey believes IndyCar’s new universal areokit will succeed in bolstering the spectacle during the 2018 season.
“The new car looks fantastic,” Harvey said. “Clearly we’ve lost a lot of carbon from last year which means a reduction in downforce. This is the biggest change you can feel as a driver – you still have the speed and the car is still performing at one of the highest levels in racing, but now the car feels lighter and you are moving around more.

NASCAR Penalizes Kevin Harvick For Rear-Window Issues After Vegas Win
NASCAR issued penalties on Wednesday to Kevin Harvick's Stewart-Haas Racing Team for rules infractions following the team's victory in Sunday's Pennzoil 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
NASCAR docked Harvick 20 championship points while his team was also penalized 20 points after NASCAR found problems with the rear windshield on Harvick's Las Vegas-winning race car when it was examined at NASCAR's Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C. on Tuesday.
Harvick's crew chief Rodney Childers was fined $50,000 and car chief Robert Smith was suspended for the next two races. Harvick's win will stand.

McLaren's Zak Brown Calls For FIA To Sort Out 2021 Rules
McLaren has urged FIA to "step up its game" to get a deal on Formula 1's future rules beyond '20 "sorted over the next few months," according to Jonathan Noble of MOTORSPORT.
With "clear differences of opinions" between teams and Liberty Media about its vision for grand prix racing from '21, there have been predictions of some "fireworks" in talks that are scheduled to take place in the near future.
That is why McLaren Exec Dir Zak Brown "thinks the time has come" for FIA to do more to "help push things along, and avert the possibility of Ferrari or Mercedes chasing a future away from F1."

SMI Trademarks "Roval" Ahead Of Fall Cup Race In Charlotte
Ahead of September’s Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series race on Charlotte Motor Speedway’s new “roval” course, SMI has trademarked the term “Roval,” the company confirmed today to THE DAILY.
Roval is a combination of the word “road,” implying a road course, and “oval.” CMS is switching the fall race from its traditional oval track to a course that combines part of the oval with CMS’ infield road course. The Bank of America 500 will likely be the most high-profile NASCAR race ever run on such a course.
Norris keeps on shining on Day 2 of Le Castellet test
Lando Norris ended the second day of FIA Formula 2 pre-season testing with the quickest time, as his 1:42.226 lap proved to be unbeatable during the post-break running while DAMS driver Alexander Albon headed the leaderboard in the afternoon.
In the morning, Trident’s Arjun Maini was the first to take to the circuit, followed in hot pursuit by Sette Camara. Seeking to get plenty of dry running early in the breezy, sunny conditions, the majority of the field were out of the blocks within the first ten minutes, trading fastest times as the track conditions improved with the flurry of activity.
NASCAR Drivers Help Sponsorless DiBenedetto For Phoenix Race
NASCAR drivers Denny Hamlin and Kevin Harvick, along with HOFer Darrell Waltrip, have each pledged $5,000 to help get fellow driver Matt DiBenedetto "on the grid" for Sunday's Monster Energy Cup Series event at ISM Raceway after he revealed he lacked sponsorship, according to Tim Southers of AUTOSPORT.com.
DiBenedetto took to Twitter in a short video to "reveal he had lost sponsorship and was unlikely to make the race."
Verizon IndyCar Series Season Opens Live on ABC at St. Petersburg

With the excitement of new-look race cars, new driver/team combinations and one of racing’s most beautiful settings, ABC will open the 2018 Verizon IndyCar Series season with a live telecast of the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg (Fla.) on Sunday, March 11, at 12:30 p.m. ET. The telecast also will stream live on the ESPN App and the WatchABC App.
The 110-lap race will be contested on a 14-turn, 1.8-mile temporary racing circuit that includes St. Petersburg city streets as well as part of an adjacent airport. The blue waters of Tampa Bay and the St. Petersburg skyline provide a picturesque backdrop.
Daniel Ricciardo broke the 10-year track record at Circuit de Catalunya for Red Bull to top the times on the second day of the second Formula 1 pre-season test while McLaren missed almost seven hours of track time.
The Red Bull driver beat Lewis Hamilton’s provisional fast time with a 1m 18.047s set on Pirelli’s new hypersoft tires to beat Felipe Massa’s previous lap record of 1m 18.339s from 2008 set with Ferrari.
Hamilton, who initially broke the record first before seeing his lap disallowed for cutting the Turn 14 chicane, was second spot on the timesheet with his best lap of 1m 18.400s set on ultrasofts having completed 90 laps for Mercedes before handing over to Valtteri Bottas for the afternoon session.

Meanwhile, Daniel Ricciardo set a new unofficial lap record of the Barcelona Formula 1 circuit.
Ricciardo's 1m18.047s, just after around lunch break on day two of the second test, was almost three tenths faster than Felipe Massa's record set in 2008.
Danica To Drive The No. 13 Godaddy Chevy For ECR In The Indy 500

Four-time NASCAR Cup Series champion and FOX NASCAR analyst Jeff Gordon joined some elite company Tuesday afternoon when he was announced as a nominee to the 2019 NASCAR Hall of Fame class in the first year in which he was eligible. Gordon is among 20 nominees recognized for making significant advancements to NASCAR.
Gordon retired from full-time NASCAR competition at the conclusion of the 2015 season with 93 Cup Series victories, ranking him third on NASCAR’s all-time wins list. He joined the FOX NASCAR on-air team in 2016 to call MONSTER ENERGY NASCAR CUP SERIES races alongside play-by-play announcer Mike Joy and analyst and Hall of Famer Darrell Waltrip.
Castroneves and Montoya to be inducted into Long Beach Motorsports Walk of Fame
Two Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach winners—Helio Castroneves and Juan Pablo Montoya— will be inducted on Thursday, April 12, at 11:00 am into the Long Beach Motorsports Walk of Fame, a City of Long Beach and Grand Prix Association of Long Beach joint project.
The public is invited to attend the 13th annual Walk of Fame induction ceremony, which will be held on South Pine Avenue in front of the Convention Center as part of the festivities surrounding the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach. Admission to the ceremony is free.
