Erebus Motorsport V8 Team Severs Ties With Mercedes-Benz, AMG
Erebus Motorsport's V8 Supercars team has "reportedly ended its ties with Mercedes-Benz and AMG, bringing their two-year customer deal to an end," according to FOX SPORTS. The Betty Klimenko-owned squad has "endured two difficult seasons building a racing program around the AMG-tuned version of the German marque's E-Class sedan with no direct support from Mercedes-Benz."

After "successfully lobbying Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific for their consent to race the E63 in V8 Supercars," the Queensland-based squad secured a technical support deal with AMG, Mercedes-Benz's performance arm, through its customer sports racing program HWA.

Although Erebus had been in negotiations to renew that deal at the end of '14, the new season will see the team racing its E63 V8 Supercars "without any technical assistance from HWA." Erebus Motorsport CEO Ryan Maddison said, "There is no contract in place and the understanding is there is no real reason or need to have a contract because of the services we no longer take directly from AMG or HWA." Maddison confirmed the team was "unlikely to switch to another manufacturer before the arrival of sweeping rule changes for the 2017 V8 Supercars season" FOX SPORTS

Formula E Expects Sellout Crowd In Miami
Formula E cars
Formula E cars
Formula E organizers "are expecting a sellout crowd of more than 50,000 spectators for Saturday’s race in South Florida, as the all-electric racing series makes its U.S. debut on the streets of downtown Miami," according to HJ Mai of SPORTSBUSINESS JOURNAL. While the layout of the race circuit along Miami’s Biscayne Bay "makes it difficult to build full grandstands," Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag said "there will be a large area for general admission."

Agag: "The numbers are 15,000 to 20,000 fans on the grandstands; I think we are going to sell those out. Another 20,000 to 30,000 fans can be around the [general admission] area."

Should the predictions hold true, it would enable Formula E "to celebrate its third sellout crowd in five events for its debut, 2014-15 season."

Jacques Villenueve
Jacques Villenueve

Jacques Villeneuve will compete with Shell Racing in the Brazilian Stock race at Goiania on the weekend of 21-22 March. Villeneuve will drive alongside his old Formula 1 teammate Ricardo Zonta in a two car team.

The 1997 Formula 1 World Champion will be on the grid for the opening race of the stock car season on 22 March in Goiania. The Canadian will make his second appearance in the Brazilian category, once again with the Shell Racing team with teammate Ricardo Zonta in the number 10 car.

Villeneuve and Zonta have been teammates in F1 (at British American Racing). This, however, will be the first time the two will share the same car. For the Canadian, Stock Car is not new: he tested in 2011, with a participation in the Million Race, the debut of Racing Shell in the series.

New Ford GT to carry $400k-price tag
New Ford GT
The last time Ford made a GT, it built more than 4,000 of them and sold each one for around $150,000. Judging by the premiums at which they later traded, they were evidently worth a lot more than that. But this time, the new Ford GT will be far more expensive and far more scarce.

Official performance, production and pricing figures have yet to be released, but upon the new American supercar's European debut in Geneva, Ford performance chief Dave Pericak indicated it would be priced competitively with the Lamborghini Aventador – which carries a base sticker price approaching $400,000, Car and Driver reported. Combine that with production expected to number in the hundreds, not the thousands, and you're not likely to be seeing any of these Blue Oval halo cars in your neighborhood anytime soon.

Chrysler Now Replacing Ignition Switches on 702,000 Cars
Eight months after submitting a recall for ignition switches that could cut the engines on 696,000 vehicles, Chrysler has concluded that it will replace the switches instead of trying to repair them, according to filings with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The 2008–2010 Dodge Grand Caravan, Journey, and Chrysler Town & Country have ignition switches that may have poor detents and allow the key to be stuck between the accessory and run positions while the engine is running. If the key slips into the accessory position, the car will shut off and disable all power assists and the airbags, similar to the problem on millions of General Motors vehicles. Chrysler said it had been trying to redesign the detent ring and program new software but found that it would “take significantly longer” than simply replacing the switches outright. The company also said it had switched suppliers from Continental to Marquardt and expanded the total population to 702,578 cars.

Goodyear Has A Concept Tire That Generates Electricity
We deal with concept cars all the time, so, really, the idea of a 'concept tire' shouldn't be too strange. It sounds a bit weird at first, but when you think about it, it makes sense for the same reasons concept cars do: flashy showcases for cutting-edge technology. And this one, the Goodyear BHO3, does have a good trick: generating electricity.1

Of course, like a concept car, it's not really clear how much of this technology is real and how much is just dream-cream. Goodyear says the tires will (well, will "offer the possibility") transform heat into electricity via this vague explanation:

Ecclestone calls for low cost customer car
Bernie Ecclestone
Bernie Ecclestone has expressed his frustration at being unable to push through his plan to offer teams a low cost customer chassis package.

Ecclestone has been pushing his idea, which has sometimes been described as GP1, for some time. However, he says that the teams won't accept it.

Williams Rolex Australian Grand Prix Preview
2015 Williams F1
The traditional season-opener at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne is a fitting place to start the 2015 season. The part street circuit layout provides an interesting challenge for the drivers, with the late start time and setting sun making visibility tricky as the race unfolds. The laid back and knowledgeable Aussie fans always create an electric atmosphere, making this a popular destination for Formula One after a busy winter. Williams has won in Australia once, back in 1996, and after a very promising 2014 campaign the team will be looking to make a strong start to the season and signal its intent once again.

Exploding Goodyear tires end Johnson's day early
DO YOU KNOW THE CAUSE OF THE RIGHT FRONT GOODYEAR TIRE BLOWING?

“Yeah, the first one, they said the bead blew on my Goodyear tire. We don’t have any brake temp here, so I don’t know what could have caused that. That’s kind of a freak deal. The second Goodyear tire just went soft. So there could have been some damage that caused it or some rub or something like that, and it went soft going into Turn 3 and I hit the wall, unfortunately. I’m disappointed. We certainly had an awesome race car. I wish we could have won this KOBALT race in this KOBALT car, but we’ll come back next week.”

Q and A with Jimmie Johnson
Jimmie Johnson
Jimmie Johnson
JIMMIE JOHNSON, NO. 48 KOBALT TOOLS CHEVROLET SS, met with members of the media at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and discussed his plans for the West Coast swing, building a Habitat for Humanity home for a family in need, his success at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and many other topics.  Full Transcript:

TALK ABOUT EVERYTHING YOU HAVE HAD GOING ON THIS WEEKEND WITH YOUR SPONSOR KOBALT TOOLS AND WHAT YOUR THOUGHTS ARE ON TODAY’S RACE:
“I’m very honored to represent Lowe’s and KOBALT week in and week out.  After 14 years of representing the brand they continue to amaze me and do great things.  They love this sport. They love Team Lowe’s Racing.  They find it very important for them to be here in this space and connect with our fan base, very thankful for that.  They also do so much in the charitable world.  I’ve had multiple builds with them with the Habitat for Humanity including the one here this weekend.  I just had a chance to meet the family and their five daughters.  They are so happy.  I had a hard time looking them in the eyes because they would start to tear up.  Of course it catches my emotions as well.  They continue to support communities abroad through a variety of different charities. I’m thankful for our foundation and our involvement with them in the public education world that we work in then also with Habitat.  A lot of fun, I’ve been busy.  I had a trip in LA (Los Angeles) for some kind of non-traditional media before we got here.  Since we have been here at the track just spreading the word about KOBALT and their involvement, the Habitat build and spent sometime in the race car.  The car has been super-fast.   Hopefully, we can take our sponsors trophy home back where it belongs.”

Bernie knows that 2015 will be another boring 1-2 Mercedes parade.....as fans head for the exits and TV ratings drop further

"Yes. I would put everything I own on it," the British billionaire told the German newspaper Welt.

He is referring to the occupant of a works silver Mercedes.

Ecclestone says the turbo V6 'power unit' rules he so despises means that the German giant's dominance of 2014 cannot be overcome so quickly.

That is even despite the so-called engine 'freeze' having been thawed over the winter.

Ecclestone said: "I would have preferred if only Mercedes would have had to keep the engines frozen.

Earlier, amid Marussia and Caterham's decline and the similar financial issues of even bigger teams, it was reported that the F1 supremo was working on a 'plan B'.

It would involve a kind of 'division two' on the grid, reportedly with smaller teams no longer building their own cars, but leasing a two-year-old Red Bull chassis powered by Mecachrome V8 engines at a cost of just EUR 15 million per year.

Jeff Gordon met with members of the media at Las Vegas Motor Speedway and discussed may topics including the further installation of SAFER barriers. The transcript in part:

Q) WHAT DO YOU THINK THESE TRACKS SHOULD BE DOING WHILE THEY ARE LOOKING AT PLACES TO PUT MORE SOFT WALLS?
Gordon: "I think it's important to note that the tracks and NASCAR, I know they are doing a lot to put as much effort into answering the question what can we do right away? You see it here. You saw it last week. But there is only so much that can be done in a short period of time. That is what I want to see. I have a meeting with NASCAR next week. I wasn't able to do it this week, but I have a meeting with them next week. I'm looking forward to getting together with them to hear a little bit more detail in that progress. I don't want to allude to too much because I have just enough details to get myself in trouble by bringing them up because I don't have the full scope of it. I would prefer to have the full scope of it. I think that the most important thing is just to continue to see progress."

Another NASCAR driver hits unprotected wall
Erik Jones first hit the outside wall, then later the inside wall that had no Safer Barrier
Erik Jones hit the outside wall head-on just after the Safer Barrier ended
Getty Images for NASCAR
For the third week in a row, a NASCAR race car went headfirst into a concrete wall unprotected by a SAFER barrier, though this time the driver was uninjured. On a Lap 173 restart during Saturday's Boyd Gaming 300 NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Ryan Blaney got loose on the bottom lane, his Team Penske Ford drifting up into the Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota of Erik Jones. After the contact, Jones lost control of his car, which first swung left and then turned back to the right, where it went hard headfirst into a concrete wall. Jones was able to get under the car on his own and appeared uninjured.

Last week, Jeff Gordon crashed headfirst into a concrete infield wall at Atlanta Motor Speedway after being hit by Jamie McMurray and turned down the track. During the same incident, Denny Hamlin hit a section of the outside wall that had no SAFER barrier. In the season-opening XFINITIY race at Daytona International Speedway last month, JGR driver Kyle Busch suffered a compound fracture of the lower-right leg and a mid-foot fracture of his left foot when his car hit an unprotected infield wall. Numerous tracks have begun programs to improve safety, either by adding more SAFER barriers, tire walls and other enhancements. Gordon has a meeting with NASCAR next week to discuss safety. “I was surprised at the start because I saw the Lamborghini jump but at the same time, I saw the red light and I had one tenth of a second to think and I stopped but didn't want to stall,” said Beretta. “But then the red light went away and the race went green, so it was a confusing moment. I pushed and had a good start.”

As dominant as Austin Dillon was in Saturday's Boyd Gaming 300 NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, he had to give his utmost effort in the closing laps to hold off charging Ryan Blaney for the victory.

Dillon led 183 of the 200 laps at the 1.5-mile speedway, but Blaney had a tire advantage at the end of the race, thanks to a late pit stop after his car snapped loose and knocked Erik Jones into the outside wall at the exit from Turn 4.

After restarting fifth with 21 laps left, Blaney charged to the front, making up a deficit of more than 1.5 seconds and forcing Dillon to block him repeatedly during the last three laps. Blaney ran out of room in the final corner, his No. 22 Ford turning sideways and tagging the outside wall as Dillon crossed the finish line with an advantage of 0.664 seconds.

Danica wrecks Pole-sitter Jeff Gordon in Las Vegas
Danica spun and Gordon had nowhere to go
Danica Patrick spun and Gordon had nowhere to go. He will start last in his backup car
Jeff Gordon crashed during the final practice before Sunday's race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, where his pole-winning car was damaged enough that Hendrick Motorsports pulled out a backup Chevrolet.

Gordon had won the pole, but will have to drop to the rear of the field at the start of the race because he changed cars.

The accident happened in the final minutes of Saturday practice when Danica Patrick spun in front of him and Gordon was unable to avoid her car. Gordon's car suffered heavy damage to the nose and right rear.

Hendrick Motorsports did not have time to get the backup car on the track. The backup was previously used last year at Chicago, Charlotte and Texas.
