There were a number of high profile crashers – including reigning Champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team), Pol Espargaro (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) and Andrea Iannone (Team Suzuki Ecstar) – and a Red Flag late in the session following a number of falls in succession at Turn 2.

Video: IndyCar St Pete GP Q&A with Marco Andretti
AR1 talks to Andretti Autosport driver Marco Andretti about IndyCar brake issues and his new outlook on driving. Andretti has managed just two victories in 183 IndyCar starts. His last win was in 2011, and as IndyCar prepares for its Sunday season-opener through the streets of St. Petersburg, Andretti is in the best mental place of his career.

''I approached last year and said this has to be my best year. Well, that was the wrong approach,'' he said. ''If you go in thinking you have to do this, you are going to drive with a chip on your shoulder, you are going to drive angry and you are going to drive frustrated and you are not going to drive fast.''

Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen concluded Formula 1's pre-season testing schedule with the quickest time, amid delays for Red Bull and McLaren, at a warm and sunny Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on Friday.

Raikkonen romped clear of the pack with a 1:18.634 on the Super Soft compound tire during the morning session, one of the fastest ever laps of the current circuit layout.

Raikkonen's time was sufficient to finish eight tenths clear of Red Bull's Max Verstappen, though both drivers encountered issues during the afternoon session.

This weekend the Verizon IndyCar Series will run their season opener in St. Petersburg, Florida.  With the temperatures in the high 70s, the weekend should be perfect to get the series started on round one of the 17 races scheduled for this season.

With all the driver changes for this season, it will be interesting to watch how the team chemistry effects the chance for a win for some of these drivers.  Takuma Sato is now driving for Andretti Autosport after driving for Foyt Racing for four seasons.  Having only one win, Sato looks to change that statistic with three experienced drivers as teammates.

V2V Safety Technology Now Standard on Cadillac CTS Sedans
Vehicle-to-vehicle communications
Vehicle-to-vehicle communications
Cadillac introduces Vehicle-to-Vehicle (V2V) communications this month in the CTS performance sedan, beginning with 2017 interim model year cars in production now. V2V-equipped vehicles share information that can be used to alert drivers to upcoming potential hazards, laying the groundwork for a connected, safer future.

Cadillac's V2V solution uses Dedicated Short-Range Communications (DSRC) and GPS and can handle 1,000 messages per second from vehicles up to nearly 1,000 feet away. For example, when a car approaches an urban intersection, the technology scans the vicinity for other vehicles and tracks their positions, directions and speeds, warning the driver of potential hazards that might otherwise be invisible.

Vettel begins to flex Ferrari muscle in Barcelona

The Ferrari has been fast on harder tires

Despite Kimi Raikkonen wadding up the Ferrari yesterday in Barcelona testing, it appears the Ferrari mechanics have done a good job to fix it.

Sebastian Vettel turned multiple 1m19.3s laps to leap to the top of the times Thursday morning in Barcelona. That's a pretty fast on the soft compound Pirellis.

Yesterday, Valtteri Bottas was fastest in the Mercedes with the same 1m19.3 lap times but on super-softs and ultra-softs.

We will have full morning results when the teams break for lunch.
