DTM: New race formats with two Championship rounds per weekend
In the 2015 season, DTM will provide the spectators a new race format with two races of equal value per weekend, thus becoming even more attractive for both the crowds on site and the TV audience. All the race meetings will feature a Championship round on Saturday and a second on Sunday, with full Championship points being awarded for both races. On both days, the drivers will have to contest a 20-minute qualifying session that will be crucial for the grid positions for the following race.

Nonetheless, there are differences between the Saturday and the Sunday races: the duration and the number of pit stops. On Saturday, the race will be over after 40 minutes plus a full lap, with tire changes not being obligatory. This means that a driver may cover the full race distance on one set of tires – but doing so will represent a special challenge. Meanwhile, the race duration on Sunday amounts to 60 minutes plus a full lap and a stop for a tire change is mandatory for every driver.

Button says teammate used to do it in his pants
Button says Villeneuve used to urinate in his driving suit
Ahh, it's always the same, isn't it? You're a highly-respected Grand Prix driver, a former world champion, and after more than a decade and a half you're still on the grid and fighting it out with the world's best.

The, on the eve of your 16th season in motorsport's premier series, you give an in-depth, wide-ranging interview to a highly-respected magazine covering the state of play in your sport, the car industry, teammate rivalries, and who will win the world championship.

Then, right at the end, you get asked a question that the journalist's daughter begged her dad to pose.

The driver, of course, is Jenson Button - and the question was "what do you do when you need the toilet during a race?"

Giedo van der Garde
Giedo van der Garde
From Giedo van der Garde's Facebook page:

With respect to the interest of motorsport, and F1 in particular, I have decided to give up my legal rights to race this weekend at the Melbourne Grand Prix.

As I am a passionate race driver this decision has been very difficult for me.

However I also wish to respect the interest of the FIA, Sauber Motorsport, as well as Nasr and Ericsson.

My management will continue talks with Sauber early next week to find a mutually acceptable solution for the current situation that has now arisen.

I am confident such solution will be found and I will inform the media once done.·

Ailing backmarkers could leave Button dead last
(GMM) Amid a diminishing Melbourne grid, Jenson Button is worried he could be left dead-last at the start of the new McLaren-Honda era.

That is partly because the reunion of the famous and successful names has been a disastrous affair so far.

But struggling McLaren-Honda may then find nowhere to hide in Australia, given the troubles of the usual backmarkers at the rear of the grid.

Finland, Home of the $103,000 Speeding Ticket
Reima Kuisla, a Finnish businessman, was recently caught going 65 miles per hour in a 50 zone in his home country—an offense that would typically come with a fine of a couple hundred dollars, at most, in the U.S. But after Finnish police pulled Kuisla over , they pinged a federal taxpayer database to determine his income, consulted their handbook, and arrived at the amount that he was required to pay: euro 54,000.

The fine was so extreme because in Finland, some traffic fines, as well as fines for shoplifting and violating securities-exchange laws, are assessed based on earnings—and Kuisla's declared income was €6.5 million per year. Exorbitant fines like this are infrequent, but not unheard of: In 2002, a Nokia executive was fined the equivalent of $103,000 for going 45 in a 30 zone on his motorcycle, and the NHL player Teemu Selanne incurred a $39,000 fine two years earlier.

Arrest warrant issued for #44 team owner
NASCAR team owner John Cohen, whose small Team Xtreme made news last month when it had to miss the Sprint Cup race at Atlanta after its race car went missing in an apparent robbery, said Thursday he never got the paperwork that has resulted in a warrant issued for his arrest in New Jersey. The warrant was issued as part of a 2012 civil lawsuit that Cohen has agreed to settle by paying $55,000 to investors who gave him money in 2010 for a proposed New York City nightclub that never opened. One of the investors also gave Cohen $3,000 to help buy tires for a race in 2010, according to the complaint.

Cohen said in a phone interview Thursday with ESPN.com that he never made a settlement and hasn't lived at the address listed in the lawsuit for months. Cohen also said Thursday that when he first heard of the warrant listing the name John, he thought it could be for his father, who lived at that address and died several years ago. John was his father's legal name, while Cohen's legal name is Jonathan. Paperwork provided by Elliott Malone, an attorney for the investors, shows that at a deposition in May 2014, the listed address for Cohen was the one on the warrant and Cohen never changed his address with the court.

RAB Racing withdraws from Phoenix race (Update)
UPDATE The #29 RAB Racing team and driver Reed Sorenson have withdrawn from the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Phoenix this weekend. The team will return to action next week at Auto Club Speedway. Reed Sorenson and his wife Laura announced that they are expecting their first child later in the year.

03/13/15 RAB Racing has withdrawn the #29 Toyota Camry from this weekend's CampingWorld.com 500 Sprint Cup race at Phoenix International Raceway. Team majority owner Robby Benton told NASCAR Talk in an email Thursday that his team's rough start to the 2015 season prompted the decision to step back and regroup. As a result, Team RAB will skip Phoenix but plans on returning to the circuit for next week's race at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, Calif. "After having missed the first three events (failed to qualify in each), there's no need to chase points," Benton said. "We don't have sponsorship for every event, we just wanted to attempt the first three to see how points worked out. After missing Las Vegas, it made sense to skip Phoenix and take the added time to better prepare for California (Auto Club) Speedway. That's a home race for TRD (Toyota Racing Development) and very important for us." Benton added that the team will scale back and run a limited schedule pending additional sponsorship. NBC Sports

GM recalls 64,000 Volts over carbon monoxide risk
General Motors is recalling about 64,000 Chevrolet Volts from the 2011-13 model years for a software update to limit how long the car can be left idling, a move to prevent carbon monoxide buildup when a driver forgets to shut off the vehicle.

GM said in a statement to Automotive News that it is aware of two injuries related to the issue, both from carbon monoxide exposure. The problem can occur if a driver inadvertently leaves the plug-in hybrid running while it's in electric mode, which eventually will drain the battery and cause the gasoline engine to turn on.

"If the gas engine runs for a long period of time within an enclosed space, such as a garage, carbon monoxide could build up," GM said.

The Volt emits a warning chime to alert a driver who has exited the car that the vehicle hasn't been turned off. The software fix will limit the time that an idle Volt can be left in the "on" position.

Yawn...Mercedes run 1-2 in opening Australian GP practice
Nico Rosberg
Nico Rosberg
Continuing their boring 1-2 parade of 2014, Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg edged teammate Lewis Hamilton to top the first free practice session of the new Formula 1 season by just 0.029 sec. because the car is 99.99% of the equation in F1 so both drivers should run almost identical lap times.

Rosberg's best lap of 1m29.557s fell less than two tenths shy of the fastest lap of the entire weekend at last year's Albert Park race, indicating the progress the teams and Pirelli have made over the winter.

Hamilton turned his fast lap of 1m29.586s to end up 2nd after not trying very hard early.

Patricia Driscoll Addresses Kurt Busch And NASCAR

Ashley Van Metre, Busch's new girlfriend. Did he dump Driscoll for her and did Driscoll retaliate by claiming domestic violence? Maybe we'll never know for certain
On Wednesday Kurt Busch was officially reinstated by NASCAR and this weekend he will make his return to the race track in Phoenix. The road for Busch to return was made easier when it was announced that no criminal charges would be filed after the claims of domestic abuse that were made by his ex-girlfriend Patricia Driscoll. As Busch prepares to make his return to the track, Driscoll remains constant in her claims that her allegations are fact. After the news broke of Busch’s reinstatement Driscoll released a statement of her own in which she addressed both NASCAR and Busch.

Even though Kurt remains on indefinite probation under this decision, I’m deeply concerned about the message NASCAR is sending by letting him compete for the championship after he was found by a judge to have committed an act of domestic violence. But I am gratified, at least, that NASCAR’s decision comes with the mandatory condition that he follow through on the treatment he so clearly needs. My work with the Armed Forces Foundation on veteran treatment courts has made me a strong believer in the rehabilitation process. But it has also taught me that rehabilitation takes time and can only come after you’ve taken full responsibility for your actions. Though this continues to be a difficult time for me, I remain committed to standing up for my integrity and seeking full justice.

IndyCar should take note of Chili Bowl TV Rating (Update) UPDATE IndyCar would be wise to start their season in January and complete it by Labor Day.  AR1.com recommended that 10 years before the Boston Consulting Group told IndyCar to do that. The reasons are obvious - big TV ratings early in the year - nothing else for race fans to watch.  The Chili Bowl ratings (see below) on an obscure cable channel prove just that. The IndyCar season opener should be in South Florida the weekend before the Super Bowl in the Miami or Fort Lauderdale area.  The season finale should be a 400-miler on the Indy Speedway oval under the lights on Labor Day weekend.  It would be spectacular.  One of these days it will sink into the brain trust at 16th and Georgetown.

By contrast, NBCSN got an average of 378,000 viewers for their 12 IndyCar races in '14.

Rentrak rating reports confirmed the record-breaking numbers in both households and average audience. Conservative peak numbers showed over a million people watching the largest indoor midget race in the world!
