The holes IndyCar put in the floor of the car just look silly
At the Barber Motorsports Park museum Sunday evening Honda unveiled their 2015 IndyCar aero package to the media and other invited guests. Honda drivers Graham Rahal, Jack Hawksworth, Takuma Sato, Carlos Huertas and Gabby Chavez were on-hand for the event.

Did you know there are little wickerbills for every rung on the new front wings!

And the hole in IndyCar's head, I mean the hole that they put in the floor of the car at the edge of the side pod looks silly. The back piece of the over the wheel is larger than last years.

Has NBC Sports Network found its niche with motorsports?
NBCSN, formerly NBC Sports Network, formerly Versus and most formerly, the Outdoor Life Network, has been for years trying to find its role in sports television. Before Comcast decided to rebrand the channel as a competitor to ESPN, it was a blend of hunting and outdoor sports shows.

Then in 2005, Comcast began bidding on major sports properties, winning the NHL from ESPN, but losing out on MLB and the NFL. But as the channel has changed names and moved under NBC Sports Group’s umbrella, the network has still tried to find its niche.

F1's embarrassment in Oz could be IndyCar's gain
The show IndyCar puts on is second to none. Sure makes F1 look silly.
The show IndyCar puts on is second to none. Sure makes F1 look silly.
This might seem like a strange way to start an article about Formula One, but the big winner following Sunday's season-opening "race" in Australia, which was won by world champion Lewis Hamilton, has got to be the Verizon IndyCar Series.

Why?

Because unless the opening IndyCar race in St. Petersburg in two weeks' time turns out to be a total disaster, I guarantee you there will be more cars, more racing, more passing and more excitement in Florida than we ever saw on Sunday in Melbourne.

Kurt Busch
Kurt Busch
Kurt Busch, returning to the seat of the No. 41 Chevrolet Sunday at Phoenix International Raceway for the first time since his indefinite suspension by NASCAR, sat down with FOX NASCAR SUNDAY host Chris Myers Sunday to share his thoughts on his suspension, whether he has anger-management issues and other topics.  Below is a transcript of the interview that aired on FOX:

Myers:  There are still people out there who might say, 'Well, he must have done something.'

Busch:  "Well, my reply to that would be yes, domestic violence is a serious issue.  The next step is the worst problem with that is when you're falsely accused of it.  It hurts the real victims.  That's what I have to say to that."

Stricken F1 team Marussia to pay creditors just 1.3p on the pound
Marussia, the Formula 1 team, which emerged from administration last month with backing from Ovo Energy boss Stephen Fitzpatrick, has revealed that it will pay creditors only 1.3p on the pound.

The team hit the wall in October with total debts of £63.6m including £31.4m owed to more than 200 unsecured creditors. Computer company Dell is owed £390,000, while tire manufacturer Pirelli is due £1m. The outstanding bill to British engineering firm McLaren comes to £7.1m.

But Marussia’s biggest single creditor is Ferrari, which supplied the team’s V6 engines and is owed £15.2m.

Wolff calls out Horner (Update)
Toto Wolff
Toto Wolff

UPDATE "If you come into Formula 1, try to beat each other and perform at the highest level and then you need equalization after the first race, that's not how we've done things in the past," Wolff said.

"I think just get your f***ing head down, work hard and try to sort it out.

"Half a minute is not the world, it's not like we have lapped the whole field. Equally, Williams was very good today and Valtteri [Bottas] wasn't even in the race.

"It is just the first race of 20 in the season, so let's see what happens in Malaysia."

Mercedes has turned F1 into a borefest
Mercedes pushed for the current F1 engine formula and they developed theirs years before the others. It has ruined F1.
Mercedes pushed for the current 'silly' F1 engine formula and they developed theirs years before the others. It has ruined F1.
After the last lap, there were just 13 spectators awake.

Daniel Ricciardo was among the drivers fearing for Formula 1's future after labeling as "boring" Mercedes' one-two procession at Albert Park.

Winner Lewis Hamilton and his runner-up teammate Nico Rosberg lapped all but three drivers in a Sunday drive that turned a race into a glorified Mercedes parade.

"I feel a bit for the fans," said Ricciardo, who finished sixth.

"It was a boring race. It was frustrating.

"You don't normally get too bored, but yeah I was pretty lonely out there."

Ecclestone Powerless To Prevent Teams From Overspending
Bernie can't stop teams from running each other in the ground
Bernie can't stop teams from running each other into the ground
As discussions around the F1 paddock revolve around finances -- "who can afford to compete, host races or pay their drivers" -- F1 CEO Bernie Ecclestone claims to be "powerless to intervene," according to Christian Sylt for the London INDEPENDENT.

Average annual team budgets have accelerated to a record $221.2M, sending two outfits -- Caterham and Marussia -- "into the wall last year and there are several others at risk of following them." Ecclestone: "What can we do about the teams? Their companies are in the shit because they spend more than they have got. They can spend less money. It's nothing to do with us. We can't control people's spending. It's the same in every sport. In what I call the good old days, all it took was having a chat with the people that had the money, like Colin [Chapman, Lotus founder]. Now they come along with lawyers and can never agree on anything.

Formula 1 Teams Combining Forces
Ron Dennis says sponsors cannot afford 'title' sponsorship
Ron Dennis says sponsors cannot afford 'title' sponsorship
F1 "has been viewed as an anachronism, running on excess and fossil fuels," according to Kate Walker of the FINANCIAL TIMES.

Much of this is "down to title sponsorship." However, things "may now be changing." McLaren CEO Ron Dennis "made waves" this year when he said, "Title sponsorship doesn't exist any more as a concept." Dennis: "If you look at what title sponsorship would normally be, it would be somewhere between 40-50 percent of your budget. Where the budgets are for a competitive team, no company will come in and give you that kind of money." But it is "not only about the car." The fabric of F1's global audience is "largely middle class and entrance to the paddock brings access to global business leaders, politicians and decision makers."

Formula E In Talks With Montreal Officials About City Hosting Stop on ePrix Circuit
Formula E coming to Montreal?
Formula E coming to Montreal?
Formula E organizers confirmed talks with Montreal city officials about potentially hosting a race in the Canadian city. Formula E CEO Alejandro Agag, who met with Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre in Miami on Saturday, described the discussions as “extremely positive." However, he added there are still many details that need to be resolved before making a final decision, in particular budget. “We are at an early stage of the discussion but it’s definitely a very positive discussion,” Agag said. “But it’s extremely early to enter into [discussions about] how much it’s going to cost and who will pay for what.” The electric racing series, which made its North American debut in Miami on Saturday, has a tailor-made approach to every city in terms of financing the event. Hosting an ePrix in Quebec’s largest city seems to follow Formula E’s plan of having a third North American race on the schedule -- together with Miami and Long Beach.

Hamilton admits to toying with the opposition in Melbourne
With his superior Mercedes, Lewis Hamilton was able to toy with the opposition
Australian GP winner Lewis Hamilton admits he still had plenty of pace in the tank in Melbourne but didn't really need to move up a gear to hold off Nico Rosberg.

The Mercedes driver made a brilliant getaway when the lights went out and he had a lead of about four seconds over his Mercedes teammate at one stage, but Rosberg kept chipping away and the gap stayed between one second and about 2.5s for most of the race.

Hamilton, though, says he had things under control and didn't see any reason to go all out.

Vettel pokes fun at Rosberg
Vettel pokes fun at Rosberg in front of media
Sebastian Vettel poked fun at Nico Rosberg's suggestion he wants to see the field close up after Mercedes' dominant one-two at the Australian Grand Prix.

Australia confirmed Mercedes has carried over a huge advantage from 2014, with Vettel 34 seconds adrift of Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in third. In the post-race press conference Rosberg was asked for his opinion on the huge gap enjoyed by Mercedes.

"I hope we can have a good fight," he replied. "That would be awesome. I think the next couple of races we're going to be leading the way for sure, and we're going to try and keep it that way, but we know it would be good if they can come a bit closer, as long as they don't come too close…"

IndyCar deal with USA Today lifts ethics eyebrows
Did IndyCar buy the media?
The IndyCar Series and USA Today Sports Media Group have agreed to merge marketing, advertising and news coverage in a deal observers alternately describe as groundbreaking or ethically worrisome.

The deal is being lauded by IndyCar and USA Today officials as a way to get the open-wheel series more coverage and provide the newspaper's journalists with enhanced access.

"This is the first time we have had this close a relationship with any [media organization]," said C.J. O'Donnell, chief marketing officer for IndyCar and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

But the deal also could compromise USA Today's news integrity and hamper other media outlets that aren't afforded the same access, critics said.

Thrills and spectacle in the Miami ePrix
From left, Speed, Prost and Abt
From left, Speed, Prost and Abt

MIAMI, USA - It was a day that got off to a nerve-wracking start and ended with plenty of excitement. The first Formula E race to be held in the USA saw Nico Prost triumph at the end of a duel that had the 20,000-strong crowd spellbound right up to the very end. The streets of Miami were packed, with tickets everywhere sold out, while millions of fans around the world watched on TV, computer or smartphone.

Prost is the fifth different winner in this maiden Formula E season: his name can be added to the list of Lucas Di Grassi (Beijing,) Sam Bird (Putrajaya,) Sebastien Buemi (Punta del Este) and Antonio Felix da Costa (Buenos Aires.) Making the Frenchman's day even more special was the podium ceremony: handing him his trophy was a "rival" in the form of Virgin Group founder, Sir Richard Branson, while up there to take the team award was the victor's father Alain.

Insisting he does not like to be called 'Junior', the 20-year-old was the only Toro Rosso rookie to reach Q3 in Melbourne -- despite the hype surrounding his 17-year-old teammate Max Verstappen.

"But it is important for everyone to know that the pressure inside the garage is exactly the same for both of us. We both want the same results."

No light at the end of the tunnel for Red Bull engine woes, says Adrian Newey
The lemon Renault engine has let Red Bull down all preseason. You can see Vettel smiling that he is rid of that boat anchor
Adrian Newey, the pre-eminent Formula One designer of his generation, has indicated it may be years before Red Bull can again challenge for the championship, because there is "no light at the end of the tunnel" with their beleaguered engine supplier, Renault.

Newey, the mastermind of Red Bull's four years of dominance, was also deeply critical of the FIA, motorsport’s governing body, which he accused of "giving up" and producing a set of regulations which stifle creativity.

Red Bull have already encountered problems with Renault at the first race in Melbourne. Both drivers have been complaining about how it delivers its power, and Daniel Ricciardo is onto his second of four engines for the year after a failure on Friday.

Valtteri Bottas
During yesterday’s qualifying session for the Australian Grand Prix, Valtteri Bottas developed a back injury which the team felt necessary to be examined by the FIA Medical Delegate at the circuit.

Following this, he was transferred to Albert Hospital in Melbourne for further precautionary scans which revealed that Valtteri had sustained some soft tissue damage in his lower back.

I would have liked to have picked up a bit more speed; our fastest lap was on old tires so I was kind of hoping to see what we could do on new tires but we just never really got to wring its neck.

Larry Dixon Walks Away From Spectacular Crash
NHRA Top Fuel driver Larry Dixon escaped serious injury after a spectacular crash during Saturday's opening qualifying session for Sunday's NHRA Amalie Motor Oil Gatornationals at Auto-Plus Raceway in Gainesville, Fla.

Dixon had just reached the finish line on his qualifying pass when his dragster became airborne and broke in half, sending the cockpit crashing down to the track and hard into the outside wall.

Dixon was immediately attended to by members of the NHRA Safety Safari and was able to exit the car under his won power. Dixon was later checked and released from the care center.

At the time of the crash, Dixon was fourth among 20 entrants trying to make the field for Sunday's event. The front end of Dixon's broken dragster took out the finish-line cones and the time from his run as thrown out. Doug Kalitta, who was in the other lane, crossed the center line during his run and was also DQ'd.

"Aldo Costa designed a great car last year," said team chairman Niki Lauda in Melbourne, "and this one is even better."

Indeed, Mercedes' gap over the field was an astonishing 1.4 seconds in Melbourne qualifying, with the closest chaser being the similarly Mercedes-powered customer Williams.

FIA tells Manor to explain qualifying absence
(GMM)  Manor has been summoned by the FIA to explain its failure to even attempt to qualify for the 2015 season opener.

Team chief Graeme Lowdon said the former Marussia team, having only exited administration weeks ago, elected to travel to Australia rather than wait for Malaysia where it might have been more prepared to run.

Red Bull straddled with inferior Renault engine
(GMM)  Two former Australian F1 drivers sided with their compatriot Daniel Ricciardo after qualifying in Melbourne.

"I still have many friends at Red Bull," said fellow Australian and former team driver Mark Webber, who is in Melbourne this week to commentate.

"So I'm sorry to see they're going through a bad time," he told the Austrian broadcaster ORF.
