Sebring Thursday night : Marc Gene goes fastest
 |
| Marc Gene | Marc Gene went back to the top of the timing screen Thursday night with the quickest time in Thursday’s night practice for the 58th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida. The Spanish star turned a lap of 1:45.494 (126.263 mph) in the Peugeot 908 HDi FAP that he will share with fellow reigning Le Mans 24 Hours winner Alexander Wurz and Anthony Davidson in the opening round of the 2010 American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patr¢n.
Gene, a test driver for Ferrari’s F1 team, was 0.317 seconds better than Pedro Lamy in the sister Peugeot diesel. He set a time of 1:45.811 (125.885 mph) in the prototype he is driving with Sebastien Bourdais and Nic Minassian, who were fastest in the morning and afternoon practice, respectively. More ...

Rossi tops Qatar testing The final round of MotoGP testing ahead of the 2010 season commenced today under floodlights at the Losail International Circuit near Doha, the capital city of Qatar. The MotoGP teams were back in action at the venue which will host Round One of the World Championship in a little over three weeks’ time.
As the sun set over the desert circuit, and the temperatures became more bearable the riders ventured out on track shortly after the pit-lane opened at 6pm to begin their first evening’s work.
Valentino Rossi was again fastest. American Nicky Hayden was again over a second per lap slower than his Ducati teammate Casey Stoner and probably should just hang up his helmet because he simply is too heavy to compete with the lightweight riders like Rossi and Stoner.
Official lap times
1. Valentino Rossi 1:55.402 2. Casey Stoner 1:55.717 3. Ben Spies 1:55.954 4. Colin Edwards 1:56.540 5. Randy De Puniet 1:56.588 6. Andrea Dovizioso 1:56.811 7. Jorge Lorenzo 1:56.838 8. Nicky Hayden 1:56.855 9. Mika Kallio 1:56.923 10. Dani Pedrosa 1:57.047 11. Loris Capirossi 1:57.099 12. Marco Melandri 1:57.605 13. Hector Barbera 1:57.822 14. Hiro Aoyama 1:57.888 15. Monza signs new F1 contract The Italian Grand Prix will remain at Monza until 2016, it has been confirmed. With Formula 1 commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone having already said that capital city Rome will host a race in coming years, the legendary parkland track on the outskirts of Milan will remain as home to the country's national Grand Prix.
With the F1 World Championship having begun in 1950, Italy is one of the few nations to have hosted a Grand Prix in every season, with Monza having been the home on all occasions apart from when Imola staged the event in 1980.
The previous Monza contract was set to expire in 2012 although Ecclestone - head of Formula One Management (FOM) - has now extended the agreement by an extra four years.

Thirsty Ferraris confirmed Pre-season rumors that Ferrari's engine is the thirstiest on the grid have been unofficially confirmed with the team reported to have started the Bahrain GP 10kgs heavier than rivals Red Bull.
Although a fault with Red Bull's Renault engine ultimately meant Seb Vettel was unable to win the race, the revelation that Ferrari were significantly heavier at the start of the grand prix prompted renewed belief that Fernando Alonso would have overtaken Vettel even if a loss of power hadn't compromised the German's pace.
According to BBC pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz, Williams technical chief Sam Michael has confirmed that Renault, who supply Red Bull with their engines, have the most fuel-efficient unit on the grid, 'followed by Mercedes and Cosworth, with Ferrari the thirstiest'. More ...

Marlin done racing Sterling Marlin, retired after 30 years as a driver in NASCAR's Cup Series, is involved in the sport in a new role: team owner. Well, sort of. Marlin is listed as co-owner of a new team, BD Racing, which plans to compete in the Sunoco National Tour this season, but Marlin said his role is mostly as an "advisor.'' BD Racing is named for Bryan Dant, an acquaintance of Marlin's from Nashville's Fairgrounds Speedway. The team is fielded out of Performance Motorsports shop in Richmond, Mich. Brian Oritz, a 21-year-old kart champion from Puerto Rico, will drive for the team. The first of the 10-race schedule starts March 27 at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida. As for his own driving plans, Marlin - who had run a limited Cup schedule the last few years - has a Late Model car that he may race some at the Fairgrounds. A promoter hopes to run a final few races on the old track that's scheduled to close this summer. Marlin said he may also take an occasional trip to Montgomery. As for Sterling's Sprint Cup career: "It's over," Marlin said. "I won't be racing any more." Marlin said he hasn't attended any races this year, not even to Daytona as a spectator. "I don't think I'd enjoy just standing around watching," he said. "I might go down to Talladega when they run there & I haven't decided for sure." The budding racing career of his daughter Sutherlin has been put on hold while she undergoes treatment for an eye problem. Son Steadman has no ride prospect on the immediate horizon. Racin' Today

Minassian tops Sebring Practice 2 times For the second straight session, Team Peugeot Total’s No. 08 Peugeot 908 HDi FAP was the quickest car in practice for the 58th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida. Nic Minassian turned in the fastest lap around 3.7-mile, 17-turn Sebring International Raceway at 1:45.371. Minassian is driving with Pedro Lamy and Sebastien Bourdias, who was quickest in the morning practice for the opening round of the American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patr¢n.
The 908 HDi is a new car – or at least a new tub. The crew replaced the monocoque overnight after discovering a small crack in the flooring during a routine maintenance inspection.
Minassian was 0.808 seconds clear of fellow Peugeot pilot Alexander Wurz, who turned a lap of 1:46.539. Wurz and teammate Marc Gene won the 24 Hours of Le Mans last year and are teaming with Anthony Davidson at Sebring. More ...

The Luck of the Irish Follows Conor Daly to P1 in Final Practice
 |
| Conor Daly | Conor Daly took the luck of the Irish with him this St. Patrick's Day to finish P1 in the final practice session of the day. After two official test days yesterday and one official practice this morning, it seems the young Irish-blooded driver found his stride in his lucky #22 Juncos Racing car during the final session this afternoon. With a time of 1:57.600, Daly also clocked in the only lap time under 1:58.000 in the official practice sessions yesterday.
"I'm very happy with the day," said Daly. "We worked hard all day today and yesterday, changed lots of things, looked for more speed and it's really paid off. I really want to thank the crew and everyone on the team because they worked really hard to get us to where we are now. Now, I'm looking forward to qualifying tomorrow."
Tatiana Calderon has continued to improve during her time with Juncos Racing, finding time and using new tactics during every on-track session. Early on in this afternoon's session, Calderon spun in turn 10, landing her #25 car in the dirt and ending her session early. Before today's incident, Calderon's best finishing position of the week was 11th in the first official test session on Tuesday, showing promise that she could finish in the top-ten in her rookie race this week.
"I'm really happy with the team," said Calderon. "I'm improving a lot. I already did a better time in my first session this week than I did back at the series test in January. After the test, our driver coach Peter Dempsey sent me a debrief sheet to review, and I had time in between then and this race to really think about everything. The team has also helped me become much more mentally strong since the test in January which is really helpful. I'm really looking forward to qualifying tomorrow and the race on Friday."
Hayden Duerson entered into his rookie season in the Star Mazda Championship presented by Goodyear just last week as a third driver for Juncos Racing. After years of driving go-karts, the 18-year-old is now taking his experience to a whole new level of competition by beginning to compete in formula cars. Duerson has used his limited amount of track time this week to get used to the car and prepare for qualifying tomorrow and the race on Friday.
"I'm really happy with my progress," said Duerson. "I am getting a lot of support from the crew, our driver coach and the entire Juncos Racing team which has been great. My goal this weekend is to keep improving my lap times in each session as I continue to adapt to the car, so I'm going to keep working towards that goal as we go into qualifying and the race."
"I'm so happy with the drivers, crew and whole team," said Team Owner Ricardo Juncos. "We've just been working hard in the shop since the series test in January in preparation for the first event, and after today, we are starting to see the results. I knew it was going to be a little more challenging for Hayden (Duerson) and Tatiana (Calderon) because it is their first time in a Pro Formula Mazda, but they are improving every time we are on track which is exactly what we are looking for. I really believe in their potential, so we just need time to get them up to speed. We are so happy with Conor (Daly). He was working so hard over the past two days to figure out everything he needed to and finally in the last lap of the last session, we did it. Now, we have an idea of what we can really do this weekend."

Briatore present for birth of son Falco (GMM) Flavio Briatore's first son has been born and named Falco Nathan, according to the Italian sports daily La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The 59-year-old Italian, who recently ruled out returning to formula one despite overturning his lifetime ban for the Singapore race-fixing scandal, was reportedly present for the birth at 8am in Nice.
Falco weighs a healthy 4.1kg, and Briatore's 30-year-old wife Elisabetta Gregoraci, a wonder-bra model, is reportedly also well.
It is Briatore's second child, the first being a 5-year-old girl called Leni whose mother is the supermodel Heidi Klum. In 2009 Leni was adopted by Klum's husband Seal, the British musician.
FIA president Jean Todt said in Bahrain last weekend that F1 has not heard the last of the so-called crashgate saga.
"We cannot forget a car was purposely crashed at the Singapore GP in 2008, and it cannot be without consequences," said the Frenchman.
Briatore also recently stepped down as chairman of Queens Park Rangers.

A lap of Sebring with Adrian Fernandez
 |
| Aston Martin LMP1 | Reigning American Le Mans Series LMP2 champion, Adrian Fernández narrates a lap of the Sebring International Raceway in the Lowes sponsored Aston Martin LMP1 car.
“From the start-finish straight you head towards the first left-hand corner, which is extremely tricky as it is so bumpy. You gradually slide the car to the right on the way out but the exit is blind, so you don’t see it until the last minute. The best thing is to take as tight a line as possible, as then you avoid the worst of the bumps.
"From fifth gear we change down to second for turn two, keeping clear of the curbs, and then we take as straight a line as possible, going up through the gears, into Hairpin. More ...

Q&A with Brabham
 |
| David Brabham | David Brabham, 44, an Australian by way of England, had a stellar year in 2009, winning his first American Le Mans Series title (including a victory on the streets of St. Petersburg) and the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The son of three-time Formula One champ Jack Brabham talked to us recently about sibling rivalry, family cars, long commutes, a 20-year wait for a trophy, and why he needs a new favorite St. Petersburg restaurant.
Q: What were your impressions of how the Sebring test went? David Brabham: For us it's gone very well. We ran a different car last year, the (Le Mans Prototype) 1 car, so we've now moved over to essentially what we had the year before. So it's good in a sense because we know the car although we hadn't run it for a year. So things have changed a little bit. But we ran over 200 laps and we didn't have any problems which is always good leading up to Sebring. … Sebring is the toughest race we go to. It's the longest and it's the toughest, and it's our very first race. If you haven't got you act together it can kill your whole season right there. More ...

Carl Long incident underscores NASCAR's bias Carl Long is 42 and trying to put his racing career back together. Given the shortage of employment opportunities in NASCAR today, that’s not an easy task. By his own admission, Long has had an unexceptional career as a driver in NASCAR, one that includes a combined 45 career starts in Cup, Nationwide and Truck series races. His best finish came more than a decade ago, when he placed 17th in a truck race at Texas Motor Speedway.
But in spite of the lack of success, Long did have a career. He was gainfully employed. When he wasn’t behind the wheel, he often found work with teams that needed an extra set of hands.
That all changed 10 months ago when NASCAR suspended him. After the engine in Long’s car broke during practice at Charlotte Motor Speedway, it was confiscated by NASCAR officials and later determined to be 0.17 cubic inches above the 358.00-cubic inch limit. More ...

Vijay Mallya Q&A The first race of the 2010 season in Bahrain was a good one for Force India, as Adrian Sutil qualified in the top 10 and Tonio Liuzzi finished ninth. The Italian was thus in the points, beaten only by the cars from the 'big four' teams. Adrian's race was spoiled by a first corner tangle with Robert Kubica, a result of the smokescreen produced by Mark Webber. After that he put in a charging recovery drive, and set second fastest lap.
We asked Dr Vijay Mallya for his thoughts on the first race of the year.
Overall Bahrain was a good first weekend, with a car in the top 10 in both qualifying and the race. How do you view it?I'm obviously very pleased, despite what happened to Adrian at the start. For this team, given our history and background, to score points in the first race is quite a remarkable effort. But I think even more so two things have made a very significant impression on me. First is our race pace. I think that's a huge statement for a relatively small team like us. The second is there's been so much spoken about Tonio. He's not just proved himself, but I think he drove beautifully. He preserved his tires well, he was quick, and he brought the car home in the points. So all credit goes to Tonio. More ...

Mercedes denies cheating Mercedes has denied that it gained an unfair advantage by increasing the power of its engine under the development freeze last year.
Red Bull's chief designer Adrian Newey recently said he thought Mercedes had improved the performance of its V8 while its opponents observed the FIA imposed freeze during the 2009 season. Red Bull, currently using Renault engines, looked into getting a Mercedes supply this year but was blocked by McLaren and Brawn. Newey reckons the advantage is worth "several tenths" of a second per lap. More ...

Parthiva Sureshwaren signs up for Formula Two
 |
| Parthiva Sureshwaren | Parthiva Sureshwaren is the latest driver to secure his place on the Formula Two grid – becoming the second Indian driver in the 2010 line-up.
Sureshwaren began his single seater career in 2001 when he competed in the British F3 National Class. He went on to contest selected races in the Barber Dodge Pro Series in the USA before taking an enforced sabbatical from the sport due to a lack of budget.
Born in Chennai, the Indian racer made his return to competitive motorsport in 2007 when he contested a part season in Formula Renault V6 Asia - scoring two podiums in his first eight races. His performances earned him a call up to race for A1 Team India in Eastern Creek, Australia, and a position as their permanent reserve driver. He raced again for the team in 2008 when he stood in for the injured Narain Karthikeyan in Durban, South Africa. Parthiva also has previous experience of the F2 car, having joined the official winter test in Valencia on the opening day. More ...

Latest F1 news in brief
- No 'will' to reform F1 says FIA figures
- Sauber to drop 'BMW' name this season
- Massa 'not an enemy' after Bahrain pass - Alonso
- Mercedes denies it didn't want to supply Red Bull
- Vettel to practice with Bahrain engine in Melbourne
- Rosberg expects one Mercedes on Melbourne podium
No 'will' to reform F1 says FIA figures (GMM) Formula one lacks the "will" to make sweeping changes to address the problem of the sport's flagging spectacle, according to two prominent figures of the governing body FIA.
When expectations about the 2010 season were sky high, the Bahrain season opener last weekend was highly criticized after a mainly processional race.
But Peter Wright, a veteran engineer and long-time FIA technical consultant, predicted that the problem is not yet severe enough to motivate substantial reform.
"It's like climate change, it's got to be bad before it can get better," he is quoted as saying in an AP report.
"It's got to get bad enough for people to actually have the real will to do things that they wouldn't normally do," added Wright, whose experience dates back to roles with BRM and Lotus.
Another technical consultant Tony Purnell, who left the FIA earlier this year, is more critical of a formula that is not designed to stage good racing.
"The root cause is that the cars are not good racing cars, the formula is badly designed," said the former Jaguar boss, who was central to Max Mosley's failed attempt to cap budgets.
"The will to please the public really isn't there," he added.
"The sad thing is that there are solutions but no one is really brave enough or forceful enough or probably convinced enough that they will do anything about it.
"When they look at the politics of change they all just groan and say 'well, I don't want to fight that battle'," said Purnell.
Carlos Gracia, the Spanish motor racing federation chief and FIA vice president for sport, insists F1 should wait three more races before assessing the success or failure of the 2010 rules.
"It's clear that Fernando's overtaking of Massa (in Bahrain) was spectacular and he was planning an attack (on Vettel) in the closing laps," he told the Diario AS newspaper.
"Pedro also gave us a show with Kobayashi. You can not assess regulations with a single race." More ...

Eighteen Years Later, the Truth Comes Out Race car drivers will do just about anything to win the Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring.
Just ask Andy Wallace.
As he prepares to drive Genoa Racing's bright red LMPC car, No. 36, with Tom Sutherland and J.R. Hildebrand in Saturday's 58th edition of the marquee event for both the American Le Mans Series and Sebring International Raceway, Wallace remembered the circumstances surrounding one of his two overall victories in the most popular endurance sports car race in North America.
 |
| 1992 Gurney Eagle Toyota IMSA car | "I won it overall in 1992 and 1993 driving with Juan Manuel Fangio II for Dan Gurney's All American Racers Eagle Toyota team," recalled Wallace, who has two class victories in this event too and holds the record for the most overall podium finishes in this race with 10. "But for that first overall win in 1992, I was driving with two broken ribs. I toughed it out because I knew if I told Dan Gurney, I'd lose the ride.
"I broke the ribs on the last day of a nine-day test for Toyota at Eastern Creek in Australia a couple of weeks before Sebring," Wallace said. "I remember it well; it was the 29th of February because it was a leap year, and I think Sebring was on March 20 that year, three weeks later. More ...

NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race Adds Exciting New Wrinkle The 26th running of the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race will once again feature a 10-lap shootout as its final segment and will add a new wrinkle that should make the competition even more exciting for the fans. The NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, set for Saturday, May 22 at Charlotte Motor Speedway (SPEED, 7pm), will consist of four segments, concluding with a 10-lap sprint and a $1 million pay-out to the race winner. There's an added twist this year before the green flag drops for the final segment: once the field takes a lap behind the pace car, all cars must enter pit road for a four-tire stop. The order in which the cars exit off pit road is how they will line up for the final 10 laps, placing an even greater premium on the efficiency of the pit crews. More ...

Fin to be implemented with spoiler The 3½ inch fin that NASCAR implemented for the left side of the rear deck lid and window for the Daytona 500 will be used at all tracks once the spoiler is introduced, expected to be at Martinsville on March 28, to help keep cars on the ground. It was determined during wind tunnel tests after #12-Brad Keselowski's car went airborne in the closing laps at Atlanta Motor Speedway two weeks ago that the fin would decrease the probability of liftoff. They were introduced at the Daytona 500 with the intent of being used only at restrictor plate tracks. "It is an asset we can use everywhere," series director John Darby said. Kurt Romberg, the chief of aerodynamics at Hendrick Motorsports, said the fin helps break up the air and prevent a low pressure area from developing across the top of the car that creates liftoff. Why is there no IndyCar reality show? We cannot see why there is such a void of Indy Car personalities in the general media. No follow shows, no reality shows, no inside guide shows! Maybe we're the crazy one here, but for a series that lacks mainstream media coverage, and for a series that suffers from unknown drivers (except Danica, Dario for obvious reasons, and Helio from "Dancing With The Stars"), you would think that the IRL would do ANYTHING to link fans to their drivers/teams. The series HAS interesting characters and good racing (as evidenced this past weekend in Brazil).
As an example of the power of reality television, look at "The Ultimate Fighter" series on SPIKE TV. Through the reality show, fans have become linked to the stars of the UFC and even go so far as to purchase the pay-per-view broadcasts to see how each of the UFC characters do in their bouts. People know the characters in the UFC because of the reality show! Another good example of promotion through the media is the spike in race broadcast ratings and overall coverage when there is drama revolving around the characters in the series. Who can forget the Paul Tracy Vs. Tagliani & Bourdais fights of 2006! An Indy Car reality show can produce the same drama.
It would seem obvious then that Indy Car, which suffers from a lack of exposure of their drivers, should do whatever they can to create a link between their unknown drivers & team owners and the fans. A reality television show which highlights the lives, backgrounds and feelings of the interesting drivers and team owners, creates connections with fans and gives a compelling reason for fans to tune into the Indy Car broadcasts!
If you agree and want to request this type of programming, the Indy Car marketing department can be reached at this email, downforce@indycar.com

Peugeot again fastest at Sebring

| Peugeot | Marc Gene and Peugeot fired the first salvo for the 58th Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida with the fastest lap in official testing at Sebring International Raceway for the opening round of the 2010 American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patr¢n. Wimmer hits 200 starts Scott Wimmer, one of NASCAR’s fastest rising stars will have his 200th start this weekend at the Scotts Turf Builder 300 at the Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tennessee. Wimmer, who began his racing career in 2000, will be racing for the JR Motorsports Team. He will be racing in the No. 7 Chevy Impala that Danica Patrick began the 2010 NASCAR Nationwide Series with. That car – currently 35th in owner points – will enter every race this season with Patrick returning to the car in June at New Hampshire.
“It is hard to believe that this will be my 200th race and that I will be doing it in the No. 7 Impala,” said Wimmer. “Back when I started my racing career, I was just thankful to get my first Nationwide Series in Memphis. As a driver you’ve got to have confidence that you can succeed at this level, but to that point all the stars have to be aligned, too. Everything’s really got to fall into place for you to have a career in this sport. I’ve been very fortunate to be here. It’s been a lot of fun and the six wins along the way were amazing.”
In driving the No. 7 Chevy Impala the eyes of the racing world will be on Wimmer this weekend. Originally JR Motorsports was only going to enter the No. 7 Chevy Impala in thirteen races but then decided to expand that. P1 Groupe, Wimmer’s management company confirmed Wimmer will drive the car this weekend at Bristol and then two weeks later in Nashville. For Wimmer, this upcoming series at Bristol will be a homecoming of sorts as he will again be racing under the JRM banner.
“I haven’t raced in the Nationwide Series yet this season, so it’s great to be back with a familiar team,” said Wimmer. “I raced with JR Motorsports in a select number of races last year, but this will be my first time working with Tony [Eury] Jr. He’s had a lot of success, so I’m really looking forward to working with him. The JRM equipment is some of the best you can find. As a driver it’s great to know you have that kind of infrastructure and support. I’m looking forward to the next two races with these guys.”
The Scotts Turf Builder 300 the green flag at 2:30 Saturday, March 20th. The race is the first in the NASCAR Nationwide Series after a two week break. Wimmer has raced at Bristol before and has some vivid memories of the raceway.
“Bristol is thrilling and frustrating,” said Wimmer. “Anytime you can race on a half-mile track with 30 degrees of banking and run laps in the 15 second range, you’re going to have fun. But when you put 42 other drivers out there with you, that’s when things get frustrating and complicated. Track position and self control become critical to your success.”
Scott Wimmer originally hails from Wausau, Wisconsin. He carved his mark on the short tracks in the Midwest throughout the 1990’s and became recognized as the dominant force in racing throughout the Midwest. Wimmer captured the eye of top NASCAR owners after he entered the American Speed Association (ASA) and claimed victories in the first two races he competed in. Wimmer tallied up two top five and eight top 10 finishes in his rookie year of the Busch Series that put him 11th in the championship standings. In the 2007 season, Wimmer (along with teammate Jeff Burton) won the NASCAR Busch Series season owner points championship for Richard Childress Racing. The duo finished 3rd in the NASCAR Nationwide Series standings in 2008, while Wimmer posted his 6th career NASCAR win. In 2009, Wimmer ran races for Curtis Key Sr. and Key Motorsports as well as Dale Earnhardt Jr., and JR Motorsports. He resides in North Carolina with his wife, Jody and son, Hayden.

IndyCar Racing under CART before the split UPDATE A reader writes:
 |
| Villeneuve makes a pass on the Penske power-duo | Dear AR1,
Not to mention, this was the first CART race JV won on his way to the following Indy 500 win, CART championship the same year and move to F1 with the F1 championship in 97 (three years after his win at RA)……...
CART was at a global level of performance. Mansell to CART, JV to F1….etc. Drivers, global engine and chassis manufacturers, sponsors (signage, tents!), TV, radio even.
You are killing me. Absolutely criminal.
See image. JV turn 5 after a long stalk and pass in turn 4 of the Penske team mates of Fittipaldi and Unser Jr. Curt Olsen
03/17/10 How far has IndyCar Racing fallen since the split in 1996? Here is a rundown from the CART IndyCar Road America race in 1994. Note the names. Note the size of the field. Note the array of engines and chassis. Note all the big sponsors. And weep.....It is a complete travesty. More ...

Schumacher not rejoining GPDA
 |
| Michael Schumacher | (GMM) Michael Schumacher is hesitating to rejoin the F1 drivers' union GPDA upon his return to formula one this year.
According to Germany's Bild Zeitung, the seven time world champion is now one of the only drivers in the paddock without membership of the safety-oriented Grand Prix Drivers' Association.
Schumacher, 41, is earning a reported EUR21 million in 2010, so the 2000 euros membership fee plus 500 euros per point cannot be the reason.
Some German reports speculated that the Mercedes driver does not get along with the current GPDA chairman Pedro de la Rosa, who upon returning to the F1 grid this year is considering whether to continue in the role. More ...

Kovalainen proposes blue flag ban
 |
| Heikki Kovalainen | (GMM) Heikki Kovalainen's proposal to help spice up the racing in formula one is to scrap blue flags, according to Lotus team boss Tony Fernandes.
In an interview with Bloomberg, the Malaysian entrepreneur said Kovalainen, the new team's Finnish driver, proposes that "lapped cars should not be blue flagged, which may allow time for trailing cars to catch up to the leaders".
Currently in F1, blue flags are waved when a lapped car needs to allow higher-placed cars to pass.
The issue of boring races has been high on the agenda in the wake of the 2010 season opener in Bahrain, the first GP since 1993 without refueling pitstops. More ...

Cup cars hitting 213 mph in draft Drivers reported they topped speeds of more than 210 mph in the draft Tuesday and confirmed that the spoiler increased drag and validated the reason for conducting the one-day test at Talladega Superspeedway.
Hendrick Motorsports driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. said he topped 213 mph when driving with a restrictor plate that had holes of 1 1/32-inches in diameter during the session attended by 25 Cup drivers.
“You can’t tell a difference from 195 to 215 I don’t think,” Earnhardt Jr. said. “I couldn’t tell a difference. We went 213 once, but it felt like 200.”
Drivers returned to the mid-190s when using plates that had holes of 62/64ths of an inch in diameter – still 3/64ths bigger than what they used when the Sprint Cup cars had wings on them at Talladega last October and 1/64th-inch less than what they used at Daytona in February. More ...

Button: McLaren will be stronger down under Jenson Button is confident that the McLaren team will be challenging closer to the front of the field after a varied start to the season in Bahrain at the weekend. After qualifying eighth in the Middle East, the World Champion finished seventh whereas title predecessor and team-mate Lewis Hamilton made the podium.
After a relatively quiet race in which he was beaten both Ferrari and Mercedes cars as well as Sebastian Vettel and Hamilton, Button admitted his disappointment as he became the fourth consecutive title holder not to win the first race of his title-defending campaign.
"I didn't think, going into qualifying, that Lewis would be fourth on the grid and I would be eighth," Jenson admitted to the British press. "I thought it would be very close - but Lewis did a better job and he was quicker.
"I wasn't pleased with the car that I had in qualifying and there are areas in which I really need to improve so that it suits my style of driving, but my confidence has not been dented."
Jenson is also confident that McLaren's MP4-25 will handle better next time out. "In Melbourne there are slow corners but it's not these really, really slow, second-gear twisty sections," he continued. "I think the car will work better there - it's much quicker than it suggested in qualifying." GPUpdate.net

Horner pushing for two stops
 |
| Christian Horner | Red Bull Racing Team Principal Christian Horner continues to hope for a compulsory two pit-stop rule this season after most cars elected to change tires only once in the Bahrain Grand Prix. The Englishman believes that the general show would be improved in the event of more pit lane activity in races.
With the majority of drivers having elected to stop just once at Sakhir in order to switch to Bridgestone's other type of tire compound - a must under technical regulations since 2007 - Horner is worried that races could become duller due to the current rules, which ban in-race refueling and therefore encourage a lesser amount of stops.
"What I fear is that we will end up with many 1-stop races," Christian explained to the official F1 website. "I was pushing very hard for two stops because, with how the cars are and how the fuel regulations are, we will see a lot of races like this." GPUpdate.net

Lopez lashes out at F1 José María L¢pez has hit out at the US F1 team after it deprived him of a Formula 1 debut this year. The Argentinean had been set to move to the World Championship although, with the Charlotte-based squad having pulled out, no drive in any shape or form is the result.
With it having become obvious shortly before the start of the campaign that US F1 would not make the grid, Felipe McGough - Manger of L¢pez - eventually managed to break his driver's contract and had hoped to secure a test and reserve role at Hispania, although this eventually proved fruitless.
"I find it hard to say that we did it wrong," L¢pez is quoted as saying in the Argentinean media. "I think we put too much trust in what the people were telling us.
"As soon as I arrived in Charlotte in February, I realized that everything they (US F1) were saying was not true. What happened to us was unthinkable. In 60 years of Formula 1, it had never happened, a team which is signed up not making it. They hid things from us." GPUpdate.net

GM Reimagines Head-Up Display Technology
Imagine a fog-shrouded morning when you cannot see the end of your driveway let alone the road you’re about to drive. Wouldn’t it be great if the sides of the road could magically appear on your windshield?
It’s not magic, and it’s not far away either.
General Motors R&D and several universities are working on a system that would use data gathered from an array of vehicle sensors and cameras and project images generated by compact ultra violet lasers directly onto the entire surface of the windshield.
“We’re looking to create enhanced vision systems,” says Thomas Seder, group lab manager-GM R&D. His team is working with Carnegie Mellon University and The University of Southern California, as well as other institutions, to create a full windshield head-up system leveraging night vision, navigation and camera-based sensor technologies to improve driver visibility and object detection ability. Speeds top 200 mph in NASCAR spoiler test Tuesday's NASCAR test session ended with the cars' new rear spoiler having less of an edge than it began with and a smaller restrictor plate, but speeds still exceeded 200 mph at Talladega Superspeedway.
Speeds were actually higher for some cars before the sanctioning body told teams to cut down the spoilers, which will replace the current rear wing in the Sprint Cup Series. NASCAR also issued smaller restrictor plates to limit horsepower at the 2.66-mile track, the series' biggest.
The changes helped increase drag and slow the cars after Toyotas driven by Denny Hamlin (202.170 mph), teammate Joey Logano (201.863) and Brian Vickers (200.163) topped the speed charts. Ten others hit 199 mph. More ...

Honda to recall 410,000 Odysseys, Elements over braking issues Honda Motor Co. will recall more than 410,000 Odyssey minivans and Element small trucks because of braking system problems that could make it tougher to stop the vehicle if not repaired. The recall includes 344,000 Odysseys and 68,000 Elements from the 2007 and 2008 model years.
Honda said in a statement that over time, brake pedals can feel "soft" and must be pressed closer to the floor to stop the vehicles. Left unrepaired, the problem could cause loss of braking power and possibly a crash, Honda spokesman Chris Martin said.
"It's definitely not operating the way it should, and it's safety systems, so it brings it to the recall status," he said. More ...

Ferrari begins work on Melbourne
The official Ferrari website wanted to dedicate a special cover to the Scuderia’s one-two win in Bahrain. Next to the Red par excellence, the F10, there are a 458 Italia in white and the green 599 HY-KERS, the lab car presented last week at the Geneva car show: together they form the colors of a perfect Italian flag, celebrating our country’s excellence in technology.
The last members of the team came back from Bahrain last night and now the men and women are concentrated on the preparations for this season’s second Grand Prix, which will be held on Sunday, 28 March in Melbourne, Australia.
This morning the post-race debriefing with the participation of Chairman Luca di Montezemolo was held, with an analysis of the race weekend. It was a very long meeting, where the main technical issues, which came up in Bahrain, were examined. More ...

Ecclestone admits F1 'cannot change' 2010 rules (GMM) Bernie Ecclestone says formula one must for now live with its current set of rules.
After the processional Bahrain grand prix, there has been widespread criticism of the current rulebook and calls for immediate changes.
The F1 chief executive has himself proposed that external engineers in future pen the regulations, and is also pushing his bizarre proposal for circuit 'short cuts'.
And he told the Telegraph: "Some might wonder why the teams have options on tires at all.
"Maybe if we only gave them a soft compound they would have to stop twice but I am not sure that they will vote unanimously for the mandatory two-stop race which Red Bull proposed," said the 79-year-old. More ...
